2011 Season Outlook

7www.GoPSUsports.com5 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS • 98 ALL-AMERICANS

e 2011 season will usher in a new era for PennState women’s lacrosse, as Missy Doherty takesover the reins as the ninth head coach of theNCAA’s second winningest program. Consideredone of the rising stars in collegiate women’slacrosse, Doherty, who has won five nationalchampionships as a player and coach, comes toHappy Valley following a highly successful headcoaching stint at Towson University, where shetotaled 79 victories in seven seasons.

While the main leadership presencepatrolling the sidelines will be different thisseason, many of the players on the field should befamiliar to Nittany Lion fans. e 2011 team isveteran laden, featuring as many as 10upperclassmen that could be regular starters, including seven seniors.

Overall, returning in 2011 is a squadcomprised of 18 letterwinners and eight startersthat will be captained by five valued seniors inAshley Boccio, Maggie Dunbar, Jackie Eastman,Laura Lesnick, and Jen Steadman. Augmentingthe roster will be the No. 9-ranked recruiting classin the nation, according to Inside Lacrosse.

“We are extremely lucky to inherit the groupthat we did,” said Doherty. “One of the thingsthat could put this team over the top is theleadership of our senior class. ey have boughtinto what we have been doing and teaching. eyare great leaders and they are hard workers. eyset an example for the younger players to follow, both physically and mentally. at is somethingthat is hard to coach. at is what gives meconfidence for this year. With a senior class likethat, we can take off fairly quickly.”

ATTACKWith the majority of its point productionreturning from the 2010 season, the Penn State

attack will be one of the team’s greatest areas ofstrength in 2011. Senior Jen Steadman andsophomore Molly Fernandez, the team’s top twoleading scorers a year ago with 45 and 40 points, respectively, will spearhead the unit. Workingbehind the crease, sophomore Hayley Sofarnos, who topped the team in assists with 18 in herrookie season, and senior Mary Dean have greatvision and excel at feeding their teammates infront of the net. e attack was bolstered in theoffseason with the addition of gifted newcomerMackenzie Cyr, one of the nation’s most soughtafter recruits.

Supplying offensive depth and versatility willbe senior Megan Hollerbach, junior BridgetCallahan, and freshmen Avery Curley.

“We don’t really have one type of attacker onthe field, which is nice,” said Doherty. “We havesome great 1-on-1 players and we have some greatfeeders. It’s a luxury to have that mix. We are notjust a one-note offense. at will allow us to takeadvantage of some different things.”

MIDFIELDe midfield will also serve as a scoring sourcethanks to the offensive talents of senior LauraLesnick and junior eresa Zichelli, a duo thatcombined for 47 goals in 2010. Doherty describesLesnick as a player “who can score whenever shewants to score” while Zichelli has netted 43 goalsin her first two seasons as a Nittany Lion.

Seniors Maggie Dunbar and Jackie Eastman,an experienced duo that has combined to make55 career starts, will be key to the transition game.Dunbar, a First Team All-ALC selection last year,is a high-energy competitor who is a force on bothends of the field while Eastman uses her blazingspeed to shine as one of the team’s best 1-on-1

players.Sophomore Katie Guy and junior Aly

Adams will fulfill a critical role in the midfield, serving as Penn State’s top draw specialists. JuniorElaine Welch, a tall and physically strong player, and freshman Lizzy Carney, who had a standoutpreseason, will be counted on for regularcontributions.

Freshmen Lauren Purvis, a rare two-sportathlete at Penn State, and twins Ali and EvanFoulsham will also compete for minutes.

DEFENSE/GOALKEEPERSWhile the defensive ranks are thin in terms ofnumbers, they are stout in respect to leadershipand ability. Anchoring the unit will be seniordefenders Ashley Boccio and Katy Wick alongwith junior goalkeeper Dana Cahill.

“Ashley and Katy have done a great job atleading the defense,” said Doherty. “And anotherpositive regarding our defense is that we have aterrific goalkeeper. Dana will be starting for thefirst time in her career but she has had a strongyear so far. Our midfield provides an excellentdefense as well, so they can fill in the holes ifnecessary.”

Midfielders Maggie Dunbar, Jackie Eastman, and Katie Guy are all former defenders and havethe versatility to make an impact anywhere on thefield.

Defender Brittaney Chamberlain, whoplayed in a career high 12 games in 2010, andColleen Shea will also provide the Lions withadditional strength at the defensive end.

Promising goalkeeper prospect freshmanMelissa Lloyd will serve as Cahill’s understudy andwill capably fill in if needed.

AMERICANLACROSSECONFERENCE

Historye American Lacrosse Conference, in its ninth year of existence, is a lacrosse-onlyconference that consists of the University of Florida, John Hopkins University,Northwestern University, Penn State University, e Ohio State University, the Universityof South Carolina, and Vanderbilt University. In 2001 coaches from Davidson, JohnHopkins, Northwestern, Ohio, Penn State, Ohio State and Vanderbilt met to form thisconference as a means to provide more opportunities for the student-athletes at theirrespective institutions. In 2002, the American Lacrosse Conference sponsored its firstseason, with Vanderbilt winning the league title. In 2004 the ALC received an automaticqualifying berth to the NCAA Championship for the first time. Davidson withdrew fromthe conference in 2005. In June of 2006 Florida announced it would be elevating women’slacrosse to a varsity sport for the 2010 season and in October of 2006, the Gators joinedthe ALC. In February of 2007, South Carolina also announced the addition of lacrosse tothe varsity roster, and in March of 2007, the Gamecocks were admitted to the conference. In 2006 the conference approved a tournament format and 2007 marked the first ALCpost-season tournament, with the winner earning the automatic berth to the NCAAChampionship. However, in 2008 the conference tournament featured only five teams, and the automatic qualification was suspended. With Florida sponsoring a varsity team in2010, the fourth year of the tournament, the NCAA bid has been restored and the ALCChampionship winner will again earn the league’s automatic berth.

“Diane’s tragic death left her many friends here andthroughout the country in shock and grief,” said PennState Athletic Director Tim Curley. “She was a youngperson of unlimited possibility. During her career as astudent-athlete, Diane excelled at the highest level.”

Whipple was an integral member of the 1987 and1989 National Championship teams. After hercollegiate career was over, Whipple continued toimpact the world of lacrosse by coaching. After servingas the head coach at UC San Diego, Whipple becamethe head coach at St. Mary’s College in Moraga, Calif.

“Diane brought to those coaching responsibilities thesame dedication and purpose that marked her play asan athlete,” stated Curley. “Our thoughts and prayersare forever with the members of the St. Mary’s teamwho have lost a mentor and friend. Those who knewDiane will forever treasure the memory. She was amarvelous athlete and, even more important, ateammate of uncommon grace and sensitivity.”
