2008-09 Outlook

Returning Players:After its seventh consecutive winning season (14-13,4-6), Penn State will enter the 2009-10 season lookingto earn its fourth NCAA Tournament bid in the lastfive years. Senior captains Ryan Gormley andGuillaume St-Maurice will lead the Nittany Lions’talented group. The Nittany Lions will look to bringback their success with the addition of five talentedplayers to this year’s roster.

Seniors:This season, head coach Todd Doebler returns seniorsGormley and St-Maurice to lead the Nittany Lions.

“We’re looking forward to getting some leadershipfrom our seniors this year,” said Doebler.

Last year, Gormley finished 10-12 overall in singlesaction playing primarily in the No. 5 and 6 spots.Additionally, he tabbed a solid 19-13 doubles record, teaming up primarily with Eddie Bourchier. Doeblerhopes Gormley can take his game to another level thisseason.

“Ryan Gormley throughout his career has had somereally big wins for us and has proven that he can really

contribute,” said Doebler. “We are looking forward tohim being more consistent and tougher this year andfinishing his senior year by contributing in singles andcontinuing his doubles success.”

St-Maurice posted an 18-13 record in singles last year, which led the team. He also slated a 16-10 record indoubles, playing the majority with Brendan Lynch.

“Guillaume didn’t quite have the season he washoping for last year. The year before he had anincredible year in the Big Ten and overall,” saidDoebler. “I’m expecting Guillaume to finish his careerstrong. He made a lot of improvements in doubles lastyear and I think if we get him with the right partnerI think he can make big contibutions in singles anddoubles.”

Juniors:Doebler returns two players from the junior class, including Eddie Bourchier and Jamie Cox. Bourchiertied for the team lead with 18 singles wins last season.Cox finished 5-5, with a 2-1 record in dual matches.Bourchier will look to step up near the top of thesingles lineup, while Cox will continue to makeimprovements and contribute more in the singleslineup this season.

“Eddie finished the year strong last year,” said

Doebler. “I think he has a lot of potential and I thinkhe is really buying in and really excited to get the yeargoing. I think he’s learned from his past experiencesand I expect him to have a really good year.”

“There has never been a question of Jamie having thetalent to help the team,” said Doebler. “Its just amatter if he is going to work hard enough and becommitted enough to improve in his game. The talentis there, he just needs to get tougher mentally andreally show some signs of improvement this year.”

Sophomores:Leading the sophomore class for the Nittany Lions isJason Lee. The Australia native posted a 16-19 overallrecord in singles action, including a 12-13 record indual matches. Doebler hopes Lee can bring histalented game to the next level this season.

“Jason proved last year that he can really play at a highlevel in singles and doubles,” said Doebler. “I think

now he just needs to make some improvements andbecome a tougher out and really help lead the teambecause he is talented. He just needs to play a littledifferently and elevate his game some.”

Chris Hasyn returns for his second season with theNittany Lions. Hasyn had a solid freshman campaign, going 5-4 overall in singles, including a 4-2 record insingles matches.

“Chris has continued to be one of the hardest workerson the team,” said Doebler. “Every day he trainsincredibly hard and I think he’s made someimprovements over the summer. So hopefully he cancontinue to develop and play with a little moreconfidence this year.”

Rounding out the sophomore class is transfer TaylorCohen. Cohen spent last season playing for theClemson Tigers. Cohen went 5-4 overall in singles lastseason with the Tigers. Doebler says that thePhiladelphia, Pa. native will be a nice addition to theteam.

“We’re excited to have Taylor Cohen,” said Doebler.“He is a Pennsylvania guy who transferred fromClemson. He is a really hard worker and he loves tocompete. He is a welcomed addition to our program.”

Freshmen:Doebler added four freshmen to this year’s squad, arguably his best recruiting class in his four years atPenn State. Joining the Nittany Lions will beGuanhua Chen, C.J. Griffin, Warren Hardie andBryan Welnetz.

“Chen is a very talented freshman who trained downin Florida at the Everett Academy,” said Doebler. “He

is a really hard worker. Once he gets some matchexperience, he could become a very dynamic player inboth singles and doubles.”

“We are very excited to have C.J. Griffin join us aswell. C.J. is a very talented, diamond in the roughrecruit who has his best tennis ahead of him for sure.I really think he can develop into a great player overthe next four years here.”

“Bryan Welnetz was a Top 40 recruit in the country. We’re excited to have him here. He brings a lot ofpersonality to the team. He has a very big forehandand should be able to contribute right away.”

“Warren Hardie comes in as a Top 30 ranked recruitin the country. He is also a very charismatic guy whobrings energy to the team. We expect really big thingsfrom him in both singles and doubles. He seems tobe playing with a lot of confidence.”

“I think all five new guys bring a lot of energy andenthusiasm to the team. They are really going to helpus. They will make some immediate impacts and alsodown the road I think it will be a special group.”

Big Ten Forecast:After going 6-4 in consecutive seasons, the NittanyLions dropped their Big Ten record to 4-6 during in2009. Penn State earned a handful of nice Big Tenvictories including a 5-2 upset over No. 30 Wisconsin.Additionally, Penn State defeated No. 52 Iowa,Purdue and Michigan State.

“I think from our perspective last year in the Big Tenit was a disappointing year,” said Doebler. “We hadsome chances to finish better than we did and thatwas a little unfortunate. The conference is gettingbetter again this year. Ohio State made thechampionship match last year. If you look, we areconsistently getting six teams in the tournament ayear, and most of them are advancing at least past thefirst round. The conference keeps getting better andbetter with new coaches and new facilities and bettersupport every year. It’s going to be a really big year inthe Big Ten. I think for us, we’re really going to haveto improve from now to the end of the year and reallybecome a tough team that loves to compete and getout there and battle on a daily basis. There’s not goingto be an easy match this year.”

Doebler’s Expectations:“I think overall we are a really young team and hungryteam to prove that we can get things going after lastyear. We weren’t that far off last year from making thetournament, couple matches here and there or acouple doubles points here and there. I think the keyto this group is they all seem like a very close groupand a very committed and eager to learn and improve. We need to keep playing really solid doubles andcompete and fight out there for every point. As alwaysour goal is to make the NCAA Tournament and seewhat we can do.”
