Missy Soboleski6th YearGannon ‘93

Missy Soboleski was hired as head volleyballcoach at Edinboro University on February 3, 2005.Soboleski replaced Dale Flickinger, who was hired onan interim basis in late July to replace Lynn Theehs, who went to the University of Maine.

All told, Soboleski has led Edinboro to fourNCAA Division II Atlantic Region playoff berths in fiveyears, along with trips to the PSAC Playoffs fourtimes. She owns a 12266 as Edinboro's head coach. Her teams have won at least 23 matches in four ofher five seasons.

Edinboro finished the 2009 campaign with a 2313 record, finishing third in the PSAC West with a 136

record. The FightingScots made their fourthtrip to the NCAA Playoffsunder Soboleski, defeating Clarion in the AtlanticRegion quarterfinalsbefore falling to LockHaven in the semifinals.

After a slow start,Soboleski returned theFighting Scots to theranks of the elite in theAtlantic Region in herfirst season. Edinborofinished its first yearunder Soboleski’s tutelage with a 2616 ledger, and was selected for theNCAA Division II Playoffs.

The 26 wins were particularly impressive since

the Fighting Scots were struggling at 712 enteringthe final weekend in September. They would go onto win 17 of their final 19 regular season matches toqualify for the PSAC Tournament with a third placefinish in the Western Division.

With a fourgame win over Millersville in thequarterfinals, Edinboro reached the semifinals beforefalling in three games to Lock Haven. The same fateheld true in the Atlantic Regional, as the FightingScots defeated Mount Olive in three games in thequarterfinals, but then lost in three games to LeesMcRae in the semifinals.

The Fighting Scots weren’t as fortunate in the2006 campaign, as a young squad lost five of its lastsix matches to finish at 1917. Two of those lossescame in five games.

2007 saw the Fighting Scots finish with a 2811record, the most wins since the 1998 edition alsowon 28 matches. Edinboro enjoyed a successful playoff run, reaching the PSAC Tournament semifinals, then falling in the finals of the Atlantic RegionalChampionship.

A young 2008 squad devoid of any seniors posted a 269 record, finishing second in the PSAC Westand qualifying for the Atlantic Regional for the thirdtime in four years. Soboleski’s ability to mold a teamwithout any seniors and with four freshmen playingkey roles did not go unnoticed. She was selected theAVCA Atlantic Region Coach of the Year.

Soboleski is wellknown in local volleyball circles. She has previously coached at two local institutions,Mercyhurst and Gannon. She took over the Edinboroprogram after serving as the head coach atMercyhurst from 19992004.

At Mercyhurst, she inherited a volleyball program that had not had a winning season since 1993,had won only five games in four years in the GreatLakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC),and had recorded just 26 wins in five previous seasons. She proceeded to lead the Lady Lakers to threewinning seasons in six years at the helm, including a218 finish in 2002, winning the Southern Division

championship. The 2001 team went 1916, and her 2003 team was 1615. Prior to taking over at Mercyhurst, Soboleski spent four seasons as

the head coach at her alma mater, Gannon, where she was previously astandout player. Her 199598 Lady Knight editions reached the GLIACPlayoffs twice, including a 2114 record in her first season, with Gannonreaching the NCAA Division II Playoffs. Soboleski's final team was 1816and qualified for the GLIAC Playoffs. She was an assistant coach underGerry (Burbules) Vensel, a member of the Edinboro Athletic Hall ofFame, in 1994.

"It has always been our intention to keep Edinboro University volleyball in the forefront of the PSAC and the region," related Director ofAthletics Bruce Baumgartner at the time of her hiring. "We think coachSoboleski has what it takes to continue Edinboro University's winningtradition. We feel our program is in very good hands. Missy brings agreat deal of energy and experience to our program, and she is veryfamiliar with what Edinboro volleyball represents. We also like the factthat she enjoyed an excellent graduation rate at Mercyhurst.”

A native of Rootstown, Ohio, Soboleski graduated from Gannon in1993 with a bachelor's degree in Education and a minor in SportsManagement and Health & Physical Education. A fouryear letterwinnerfor the Lady Knights from 1990 to 1993, Gannon was 11622 during thatperiod. That included three straight trips to the Elite Eight to concludeher playing career.

Soboleski enjoyed a distinguished career as a player, serving as acocaptain in 1993. The outside hitter earned a spot on the HamotClassic AllTournament team as a senior, then capped her career byearning AllTournament accolades in the NCAA Division II AtlanticRegional. She totaled 14 kills and 16 digs in the regional final win overSlippery Rock, propelling Gannon to its third straight trip to the EliteEight.

Soboleski resides in Edinboro with her three children Madison(10) and twins Braeden and Abigale (7). While at Gannon she also servedas the SWA/Assistant Athletic Director.

Ask any coach and they’ll tell you winning never gets old. EdinboroUniversity volleyball coach Missy Soboleski would concur. The veterancoach has had six 20win seasons, including four in her five seasons as thehead coach of the Fighting Scots. A year ago she guided the Fighting Scotsto a 2313 finish and a berth in the NCAA Playoffs for the fourth time in fiveyears.

What makes continuing that pattern so difficult is that players moveon and unproven youngsters must come in and play key roles. That is thecase once again in 2010, as six players have departed, including middle hitters Olivia Williams and Brittany Slauterbeck. Williams was an AllPSACWest selection for the xx straight year, and both rank among the careerleaders in kills.

“You can never really replace what you have lost,” admittedSoboleski. “You can only hope you have strong, competitive athletesreturning and new players who have that competitive attitude and havegood chemistry together.”

Edinboro definitely has a solid cast of characters returning, including apair who rank among the best in the PSAC in what they do in setter MeganOsysko and libero Maureen Tilert. Add in former PSAC West Rookie of theYear Gina Boothe and Beyaca Martin, a former transfer from NorthAlabama in her second season as a Fighting Scot, and the Fighting Scotshave a solid base.

“Moe is a quiet leader on our team,” acknowledged Soboleski. “Sheleads by example. She has been our starting libero for three years now andbrings a lot of experience to the court for us. She will once again beresponsible for the oncourt defense and making big plays for us. Meganhas been a solid, steady player leading our offense. She has a great pokerface. Not only does our opponent not know when she’s rattled, but wedon’t either.”

Unfortunately,Soboleski will haveto wait for EllieLininger to debut In2010. The junioroutside hitter is apowerful hitter butshe will miss thebeginning of theseason while stillrecovering fromknee surgery.

With Williamsand Slauterbeckgone and Lininger’sreturn delayedSoboleski knowsthat her FightingScots will need anumber of newcomers to contribute if they areto challenge thelikes ofCalifornia(Pa.) andLock Haven for thePSAC crown. Therosters features sixreturning playersand seven newcomers.

“We have astring group of athletes coming in and

we have added some depth in the key positions,” Soboleski stressed.“Seth (Sullivan) and Nikolena (Feronti) will add some depth at the outsidehitter position. Both are intense players who are very competitive. Erika(West) and Danielle (King) will add some depth to the defensive specialist/libero position. Both come from good club programs with solid training.Martina (Davis) will add some height and depth to the opposite/middleblocker position. She is a transfer from Youngstown State.”

In addition, the Fighting Scots have added Kelcie Hellmer, who previously played twoplus seasons on the women’s basketball team. The 60middle hitter/outside hitter was a pleasant surprise in the spring.

“Training hard throughout the spring and summer should prepare usfor an intense preseason,”commented Soboleski.“We have depth that willhopefully allow us to bemore versatile.Offensively we shouldmatch up well against thetop teams in the PSAC.Keeping the ball off thecourt on our side is alwaysa concern so defensivelywe need to be as aggressive as we are offensively. No regrets when we walkoff the court is our goalfor each and everymatch.“

As Soboleski mentioned, she has assembleda challenging preconference schedule for herFighting Scots in hopes ofpreparing them for another arduous tour throughthe PSAC. It starts withthe Fairmont State Falcon Fest Tournament on Friday, September 3 andSaturday, September 4. Edinboro will play Fairmont State, Glenville State,Concord and West Liberty the first weekend.

The competition takes a huge step upward the following weekendwhen Edinboro heads west to face a pair of nationallyranked teams whilecompeting in the Central Missouri Peggy Martin Challenge. The FightingScots’ four matches include meetings with fifthranked Central Missouri, who was 345 last year, and 19thranked Pittsburg State (2911).The PSAC West is loaded with no fewer than five of the seven teams winning 20ormore matches a year ago, and six of the seven showing winningrecords. In fact, the one thing missing from Soboleski’s resume is a PSACttle. Edinboro would like nothing better than to win its first conferencecrown since 2001. However, to do so the Fighting Scots must knock off aCalifornia(Pa.) team in search of its fourth straight PSAC crown.

Here’s a look at the 2010 Fighting Scots, positionbyposition:

SettersThe Fighting Scots are well set at setter with Megan Osysko. The

5’7” junior earned honorable mention AVCA AllAtlantic Region honorsafter finishing with a teamleading 1,228 assists. That figure ranked secondin the PSAC and ranks tenth in a season at Edinboro. She added 269 digs, good for second on the team.

Osysko already ranks seventh in career assists at Edinboro with 2,004despite sharing the setter position her first two seasons. “Megan has beena solid, steady player leading our offense,” related Soboleski. “She has agreat poker face. You never know if she’s rattled or not, although she

“We have depth that willhopefully allow us to be

more versatile. Offensivelywe should match up well

against the top teams in thePSAC. Keeping the ball off

sively we need to be asaggressive as we are offensively. No regrets when we

rarely gets rattled.”

Middle HittersA year ago Olivia Williams led the Fighting Scots with 297 kills and 86

total digs, with fellow senior Brittany Slauterbeck standing second in blockswith 75 while adding 227 kills. With that duo gone Soboleski looks for several players to step up in 2010.

That’s not to say Edinboro doesn’t have some talented performers inthe middle. For starters there’s Beyaca Martin, a 5’8” senior with incredibleleaping ability. Martin transferred to Edinboro a year ago after playing twoseasons at North Alabama. She proved a huge addition, compiling 293 kills, second on the team, along with 56 total blocks, which was good for third.Adding in her two seasons at North Alabama, Martin enters her final season with 762 career kills. She could also see time at opposite.

“We looking for Beyaca to become more of a terminator for us withthe loss of Olivia (Williams) and Brittany (Slauterbeck),” admittedSoboleski. “She is hands down one of the most athletic players in thePSAC. She has great jumping ability.”

Gina Boothe was named the 2008 PSAC West Freshman of the Yearand was an AllPSAC and AVCA AllAtlantic selection. She enjoyed a solidsophomore campaign, as well. “Gina has the ability to carry a team offensively,” noted Soboleski. “ She has trained very hard over the spring andsummer. She can be one of the top offensive players in the PSAC.”

The 6’1” junior contributed 277 kills, third on the team, a year ago, andalso had 32 total blocks and 27 service aces. Like Martin, she could also seetime at opposite.

Newcomers Kelcie Hellmer and Martina Davis provide further depth, although both may have to shake off a little rust. Hellmer played twoplusseasons with the Edinboro women’s basketball team before deciding to tryher hand at volleyball, where she was a standout in high school. A 5’11”senior with two years of eligibility remaining, Hellmer is very quick and wasa pleasant surprise in the spring. Soboleski notes that she has made astrong transition from basketball to volleyball.

Davis redshirted at Youngstown State a year ago and has four yearsof eligibility remaining. She is a raw but lanky and 6’0” tall. Soboleski feelsshe could play a key role as a blocker.

Outside HittersJuniors Angela Groshner and Ellie Lininger have seen plenty of

action in their first two seasons and will play key roles in the team’s success this year. Groshner is 5’8” and does all the little things that help ateam win.

“Angela is one of the top ball control players in the PSAC,” stressedSoboleski. “She has a very high volleyball IQ. She has good instincts andreaction in the OH2 position.”

A year ago Groshner contributed 262 digs, fourth on the team, alongwith 182 kills and 25 services.

Soboleski will have to wait a bit for Lininger. At 5’11” she possessesgreat hitting ability and plays above the net. However, she suffered atorn ACL late last year, missing the final nine matches, and underwentknee surgery in December. She will likely miss the opening of the seasonwhile rehabilitating the knee.

“It was a major loss last season when Ellie blew out her ACL,” commented Soboleski. “After intense rehab and training from Christmas tothe preseason we’re sure hoping she will be ready to return to the OH1position. Ellie has the ability to carry a team offensively. She plays veryhigh above the net.”

A year ago Lininger totaled 214 kills and 266 digs, the latter figurethird on the team. She was also third in service aces (29). As a freshmanshe finished second on the team in both kills (326) and digs (333).

It is hoped that a pair of freshmen, Seth Sullivan and NikolenaFeronti, can come in and provide some depth at outside hitter and makeup for the absence of Lininger. Sullivan is 5’10” and is a former standoutat Chancellor(Va.) High School, where she earned allstate accolades.Feronti is 5’9” and hails from Texas. She helped Aledo High School to theClass 4A district runnerup as a senior after reaching the state quarterfinals the previous two years. Soboleski likes her intensity.

Liberos/Defensive SpecialistsWhat Megan Osysko is the offense is what Maureen Tilert is to the

defense. An energetic 5’3” senior, Tilert is a threeyear starter who mansthe libero position. She already holds the career record for digs with 1,725and holds three of the top seven season totals. A year ago she finishedwith 617 digs, the secondhighest total in school history. She ranked fifth inthe PSAC and 24th in Division II in digs per game, also ranking fourth in thePSAC in total digs.

“Moe is a great athlete with a lot of oncourt experience,” Soboleskistated. “She is a great role model for the incoming freshmen. We will relyheavily on her ball control this season. We also look for her to be a morevocal leader on the court.”

Speaking of freshmen, she’ll be backed by three firstyear performers.Danielle King is a 5’7” freshman from Mount Notre Dame(Oh.) HighSchool. She has a great deal of club experience on her resume, as does fellow freshman Erika West. West is 5’6” and played her high school volleyball just across the Ohio border at Riverside High School where she was afourtime allconference honoree.

Like Tilert, Soboleski notes that both are intense players who will see

} PSAC OverviewOriginating in 1951 to administer and pro

mote men's athletics, the Pennsylvania StateAthletic Conference has evolved into one ofthe NCAA's most heralded intercollegiate conferences.

The first major step came in 1977, whenbased on a growing interest, the league reorganized to provide a structure for its women'sprograms. Only three years later, lacking astandard competitive division, league voted toreclassify the entire conference to NCAADivision II.

The most recent enhancement cameduring the 200809 academic year when thePSAC expanded for the first time in its rich history, adding fulltime members GannonUniversity and Mercyhurst College, and associate member Long Island UniversityC.W. Post. The membership now consists of 16 fulltimeinstitutions and the one associate.

All of the league's fulltime members arelocated within the Commonwealth ofPennsylvania, which makes the PSAC thelargest onestate conference in the NCAA. Theleague has also grown to share the distinctions as: The largest conference in Division II,the largest footballplaying conference in theNCAA, and, with 23, the conference that sponsors the most championships at the Division IIlevel.

Highly competitive on a regional andnational level, PSAC schools annually combineto send nearly onethird of its teams intoNCAA postseason play. Ultimately, the membership's success has yielded 43 NCAA teamand 238 individual title winners.

While proud of its athletic accomplishments, the league also has evolved into one ofDivision II's finest from an academic standpoint. Today, nearly onethird of the PSAC'sestimated 6,200 participants are honoredeach year as "ScholarAthletes" for maintaining a gradepoint average of 3.25 or better atotal that has nearly doubled since PSACScholarAthletes were first recognized in themid1990s.

Although all 16 current institutions aremembers of Division II, eight league schoolsalso compete at the Division I level in selectsports. PSAC schools enroll over 125,000 students and claim over 709,000 alumni, including 482,000 who reside in Pennsylvania.

The PSAC is governed by the presidentsof the 16 member institutions. It employs acommissioner, two assistant commissionersand a director of media relations at its headquarters in Lock Haven, Pa.
