Dedicated to helping students discover the knowl-edge and skills needed to take the next step in their life plans, Thiel is a place where professors are highly accessible and more involved in stu-dents’ growth and learning than at most colleges. Here you can carve out your own special place - both in and out of class. You can become a leader of one - or more - of our 24 intercollegiate sports teams or our more than 50 organizations, clubs and honor societies.

At Thiel, we are committed to technology inte-gration in the learning environment through our technology-enhanced smart classrooms and facilities, wireless computing throughout the campus and notebook computers for every student.

Students can handcraft an educational experi-ence that fits them perfectly and allows for highly customized majors and programs, close interaction with caring faculty, plenty of leadership and other special opportunities and a vibrant community atmosphere.

Students are actively engaged outside of the classroom, as well. The Paul Bush ’66 Memorial Fitness Center offers strength training, cardiovas-cular equipment, aerobics space and a social cen-ter. Our Howard Miller Student Center features a beautiful rotunda with a cafe snack bar, the cam-pus bookstore, post office, art gallery and various student services offices. Take in a game at our multi-sport complex Alumni Stadium, where our student-athletes compete on FieldTurf.

Located on a 135-acre, tree-lined campus in western Pennsylvania, Thiel College, affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, is only a 90-minute drive from Pittsburgh and Cleveland -close enough for ready access to the “big city,” yet distant enough to be safe and free from distractions.

Schedule a campus visit today by calling 800-24-THIEL or visiting www.thiel.edu. Thiel College is open for individual campus visits Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon. Appointments are encouraged and walk-ins are welcomed.

A Place to Discover . . .

Thiel College, located in Greenville, Pennsylvania, was founded by German Lutheran pioneers who came to the western part of the

state in the early decades of the 19th century. These hearty people had a common heritage of language, culture and religion. The influence of the church, particularly the newly formed “Pittsburgh Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church,” had a profound effect on the early academies which flourished briefly and led to the founding of Thiel College.

The start in 1866 of Thiel Hall, soon to become Thiel College, followed a meeting between the Rev. Dr. William A. Passavant and A. Louis Thiel. Passavant was educated at Jefferson College, a Presbyterian institution in Canonsburg, and at Gettysburg Seminary, and proved to be God’s man at the right time and right place. His zest for truth, beauty and mercy led to the establishment of numerous churches, educational institutions and hospitals in the midwest.

Coaching Staff

Veteran coach Steve Brewer enters his seventh season leading the Tomcat women’s volleyball program and third as the men’s coach. Brewer also serves as Director of the Bush Fitness Center and Compliance Coordinator for the Ath-letic Department.

On the women’s side Brewer has com-piled a Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) record of 51-37 (.579), an overall record of 95-98 (.492), and has led Thiel to consecutive conference championship matches (2009, 2010) for the first time in school history. During Brewer’s five sea-sons at the helm 18 Tomcats have earned all-conference accolades. The women’s program has also stood out in the class-room, winning the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award in 2009,2010,2011 and 2012 has had 32 student-athletes earn PAC Academic Honor Roll distinction.

Prior to arriving at Thiel, Brewer served as first assistant at Hiram College during the 2004 and 2005 seasons, helping lead the Terriers to a 51-17 overall record.

In 2005 Hiram finished 28-5 overall and won the North Coast Athletic Confer-ence (NCAC) championship with an 8-0 conference record. The team advanced to the National Collegiate Athletic As-sociation (NCAA) Division III Regional Tournament.

Besides his stint as an assistant with Hiram, Brewer brings nearly 10 years of coaching experience. He was a co-founder and director of the Renaissance-Cleveland volleyball club before leaving to start the Hiram Volleyball Club. Prior to moving to Ohio, Brewer coached with the Pittsburgh branch of Renais-sance Volleyball Club for six seasons. Brewer also spent three seasons in the high school ranks as head coach at Bethel Park High School.

Brewer earned a bachelor’s degree in social science from Robert Morris Uni-versity in 2000 where he also spent some time as a student assistant with the women’s volleyball team. He then went on to receive a masters in business administration from the University of Phoenix in 2004.

Brewer started playing volleyball as a youth in Pittsburgh where as a senior at Upper St. Clair High School he helped his team win their first conference cham-pionship.

COLLEGE PRESIDENT

Jack Leipheimer ’74 took over as Thiel College’s director of athletics on Nov. 17, 2008. He currently oversees Thiel’s 24 competitive athletics programs, all of which are associated with the NCAA at the Division III level.

A coaching veteran of 34 years – including 25 at the collegiate level - Leipheimer returned to Thiel as its head football coach in 2001 and promptly guided the program to national prominence. His 2005 team compiled an 11-1 record and drew two NCAA playoff games to Alumni Stadium in Greenville.

Over his eight seasons at the helm of the football program, Leipheimer amassed 36 wins – which ties for third most all-time in school history - including an NCAA Division III play-off win in 2005. Under his tutelage, Thiel players earned 114 all-conference selections, 17 all-region players and 10 all-America selections. Season OutlookThiel College’s seventh-year head

volleyball coach Steve Brewer looks to guide the Tomcats to their sixth straight Presidents’ Athletic Confer-ence (PAC) tournament berth this season. He will have nine returners (five seniors, one juniors and three sophomores) to help him bring along 11 new-comers to the team.

“We will be a better balanced team this com-ing season than we have been in years past,” said Brewer, who has led the women’s volleyball pro-gram to four consecutive conference tournament berths. “We have four women that have started multiple years in a row.”

Seniors Alyssa Chine, Megg Andrews, Chelsea Meister and Kelly Barzak (left) were all opening day starters last season and will be looked upon to pace the Tomcats at-tack and provide leadership. Chine was the team’s best server, leading the team and finishing tied for eight in the conference in service aces with a .32 per set average. The outside hitter from North Jackson, Ohio who was second-team All-PAC a year ago, also tallied 316 kills (2.85/set) which was good for second on the team. Andrews, who was honorable men-tion All-PAC in 2011, is an invaluable presence at the net for the Tomcats

on defense, as she finished the year with 75 total blocks- second most on the team. Meister returns as the pri-mary setter for Brewer’s team, after tallying 997 assists (8.98/set) in her first full year in that role last season.

Saving the best for last, senior mid-dle blocker Kelly Barzak returns after a junior year that saw her finish first on the team in blocks ( 1 2 1 ) , kills (335) while also f i n i s h i n g second on the team with 33 service aces. All of that

culminated in Barzak being named as a first team All-PAC selection, her third consecutive selection.

Thiel and this group of talented se-niors made it to the PAC title game in each of their first two seasons, and after an early round exit from the tournament last season, are even hungrier and more determined to earn a return trip to the finals in this their final season playing together.

Thiel will play its home opener on September 19, when they host Saint Vincent at 7 p.m.
