2009 ouTlook

Heading into their third year of competition as a Division I program, the North Carolina Central University Eagles are looking to prove themselves as a true competitor at the next level. With 11 student-athletes returning, the Eagles will rely on experience to take them far this season.

Last season, the Eagles finished with a disappointing 7-28 record after having one of their best campaigns in program history in 2007. NCCU looks to rebound and prove that they are a strong Division I contender. They will look to their two seniors Avaniki Campbell and Aqiyla Gomez for leadership this season.

With the loss of five starters, the Eagles will have to depend on several young players to step up and fill the shoes of those that have departed. Along with two seniors, this year’s roster includes four juniors, six sophomores and six freshmen.

Georgette Crawford-Crooks, who is in her fourth season at the helm of the Eagles, will look to her young talent for answers. She will bring excitement and enthusiasm to this year’s squad, with talented newcomers fighting for a chance to make an impact. Crawford-Crooks will look to her upperclassmen to mentor and guide the underclassmen in order to build a solid foundation.

This season, the Eagles hope to build a stronger offensive game with depth at the outside hitter position. At the setter position, the Eagles have to rely on their youth to contribute offensively after losing two setters from last season’s team.

Along with a strong offense, NCCU hopes to improve on defense, where they look to develop a strong blocking game. With the departure of two middle hitters, the Eagles must fill the gaps with young talent. The Eagles will look to their younger student-athletes to help on defense after the departure of their starting libero.

Adjusting to the Division I pattern, the Eagles will face another challenging schedule this season. Five tournaments highlight the 2009 slate. With only five matches in the confines of McLendon-McDougald Gymnasium, the Eagles will have to adjust to being on the road for the majority of their matches. NCCU will face some tough Division I opponents this season, including ACC-member Virginia.

Going into this season, Crawford-Crooks welcomes the challenge of a difficult schedule and believes her team is ready to compete. With a solid nucleus returning to the hardwood, the Eagles have the foundation for a successful season and welcome the opportunity.

“We have a tough schedule ahead of us this season, but we are working hard and preparing for the competition,” said Crawford-Crooks. “Many of this year’s opponents were on our schedule last year, so we are familiar with their style of play. We will be able to match up with many of them and we are looking forward to the challenge.”

Outside HittersThe deepest spot on the volleyball court this season will be the outside hitter, where several young players will be vying for a spot in the starting rotation. Senior Avaniki Campbell will anchor the outside hitter position after leading the team on offense last season. A pair of juniors, Belinda Behncke-Biney and Shantel Moore, will assist Campbell on the outside, while six young hitters battle for an opportunity to make a difference.

Returning sophomores Alexis John and Maritsann Sinclair will be two of those six battling for action this season. A quartet of newcomers will also be in the mix as freshmen Nena Johnson, Aurora Baker, Elizabeth Rigg and Tocarra Jones add depth on the outside for the Eagles and allow for more possibilities at this position.

The right side of the offense will be controlled by some of the Eagles’ youngest players. Moore, a dominant force on the outside for the Eagles, will seesaw between outside and right side for the Eagles, while sophomore Kiara Brown

will assist on the right side when her duties at the setter position are not needed. Freshman Courtney Williams will more than likely take over the right side when Moore and Brown are tending to their main operations.

With nine outside hitters, the Eagles hope to offer more variety and options on the offensive side of the ball, while adding more strength at that position. With three options on the right side, the Eagles will open up a lot more possibilities, which will make them more dangerous on offense.

Middle HittersFor this upcoming season, the Eagles hope to build a solid attack from their middle hitters and would like to develop a strong blocking game. The Eagles must look to their reserves this season. With two players standing at 6-0 or taller, the Eagles will have size and strength at the middle hitter position.

Senior Aqiyla Gomez will anchor the middle hitters this season after making a solid impact off the bench for the Eagles last season. Gomez is the only player remaining from the Eagles’ 2006 CIAA Championship team. Assisting Gomez in the middle will be junior Ashley Griffin, who will compete for a spot in the starting rotation this season.

SettersWith the loss of a setter comes the breakdown of a solid offense. The Eagles lost their two dominant setters from last season and will need to continue their offensive dominance with a solid contributor at the setter position. Battling for the starting position will be junior Cara Hill and sophomore Kiara Brown.

Having a pair of experienced setters will allow the Eagles to develop a solid offense. Both players will be able to make an impact immediately and NCCU will be able to compete at the next level with veterans leading the offense.

Defensive SpecialistsThe key to winning matches is more than just playing offense. Teams have to be able to compete defensively and a huge part of any team’s defensive game is the defensive specialist. NCCU enters this season with a number of options at this position, which will be an advantage for the Eagles going into this season.

A trio of student-athletes will have the opportunity to battle for the starting position. Anchoring the defense this season will be sophomore Raven King, who contributed significantly for the Eagles last season, while a pair of newcomers will look to make an immediate impact. Freshmen Tocarra Jones and Rakiya Sherry will battle for an opportunity to see action this season. The Eagles will be strong and quick on the defensive side of the net due to the addition of athleticism and speed.

UtilitiesA team is never complete without those select individuals that make all the difference in the world. It is those individuals that can come in when you need them and can fill in at whatever position is necessary. Those players claim the utility position. This season, the Eagles have the pleasure of having two of those individuals in sophomores Tasha-Gaye Richards and Sashalee Wallen.

Wallen did not participate last season and will be a great addition to the Eagles this season, while Tasha-Gaye returns for another opportunity to make an impact. Both players will compete for action this season and will be looked to for assistance whenever necessary. The Eagles can count on them at any time.

ConclusionWith a variety of options and numerous possibilities at every position, the Eagles are headed for an exciting year. With 11 returnees and eight newcomers, one can only imagine the type of bond that the Eagles will have. A mixture of experience and a mixture of fresh ideas, the Eagles will be a new breed with a new opportunity. It is a new year and the Eagles hope it is one of their best and is a accurate look of what lies ahead.

Georgette Crawford-Crooks came to North Carolina Central University as head volleyball coach in 2006 after spending two years as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at North Carolina State University.

In her first season as head coach, the Eagles posted an overall record of 32-13 (the most victories in school history), including a 14-0 record in CIAA play. NCCU also won the CIAA Tournament

Championship and advanced to the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Championship for the third consecutive year.

Crawford-Crooks inherited the two-time defending CIAA champions, but only returned four letterwinners and one starter from the previous season. Still, the Eagles extended their CIAA winning streak to 41 straight contests and won two tournaments in which NCCU was the lone NCAA Division II representative (the Hampton University Lady Pirate Invitational and the Winston-Salem State Lady Rams Invitational).

Under the guidance of Crawford-Crooks, six Eagles received post-season women’s volleyball honors, including junior outside hitter Shari Matthews as the CIAA Player of the Year and the NCAA Division II National Player of the Year.

For her efforts, Crawford-Crooks was voted as the 2006 CIAA Women’s Volleyball Coach of the Year.

In 2007, her second season at NCCU and the program’s first season as a Division I competitor, the Eagles posted a 21-13 overall record, against an entire Division I schedule.

On August 24, 2007, the first day of Division I athletic competition for NCCU, the honor of opening the Eagles’ Division I era went to the women’s volleyball team. The Eagles swept Norfolk State in the first match of the day, and then in the nightcap against ACC opponent N.C. State, the Eagles found themselves behind two games to none, but rallied for a 3-2 victory. Crawford-Crooks joined NCCU with a total of 11 years of coaching experience to the job, including four years as the head coach at High Point University. She was head coach when High Point moved to NCAA Division I in 1999, and helped guide the Panthers program to a successful transition to the NCAA’s highest classification. During that time, she also was the area representative for the American Volleyball Coaches Association’s weekly Division I Top 25 rankings.

Prior to N.C. State, Crawford-Crooks was the assistant coach at North Carolina A&T State University, where she put her experiences as a head coach to use in helping the Lady Aggies with recruiting, coordinating practices, conditioning and workouts, and scouting opponents. The Lady Aggies recorded 20-plus victories both seasons she was with N.C. A&T.

A graduate of California University of Pennsylvania, Crawford-Crooks was a first-team All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference selection in 1992, 1993 and 1994, helping lead her team to a conference championship in 1992. She also earned AVCA All-Region honors as a junior and senior.

She received her bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1994, and then earned a master’s in business administration in 1996, followed by another master’s in education, math and computer science in 1999, all from California University of Pennsylvania. Crawford-Crooks was later inducted into the 2003 California University Hall

2008 season Review

Going into the 2008 season, the Eagles had high hopes and high expectations. Coming off of an incredible 2007 season, the Eagles could only hunger for more. In 2007, the Eagles had one of their best seasons in program history, recording a 21-13 record. Not only was a 21-13 record impressive, but that season marked the Eagles’ first year as a Division I program.

Unfortunately for the Eagles, the 2008 season didn’t go quite as they had planned. The Eagles finished with a disappointing 7-28 record. With just one year of experience as a Division I program, the Eagles still had room to grow and had obstacles to overcome. Transitioning to the next level is not a cake walk and it has its challenges. The Eagles faced those challenges head-on.

With young talent and each player learning their role, the Eagles used the season as an opportunity to grow, develop, mature and learn the game of volleyball on the collegiate level. For many student-athletes it was an eye-opening experience, and for others, it was a learning experience.

Despite the losses, the Eagles managed to make things happen and have gained respect from many programs around the country. They fought hard and battled back through most of their matches and many Eagles earned spots in the record books.

North Carolina Central University opened the season with their annual Hilton RTP/NCCU Volleyball Tournament. Even though they struggled to find their rhythm, they learned how to compete at a higher level, playing against some top competitors. With 27 digs in the tournament, defensive specialist Rachel Lloyd landed a spot on the All-Tournament Team.

Heading into the end of September, the Eagles stood winless and were just hoping for some answers. On September 19, the Eagles broke out of their spell and turned up the heat. A feisty, determined Eagle team battled a young Bulldog team from The Citadel, forcing five sets. With 15-13 on the scoreboard, the Eagles claimed the last set and the match, earning their first victory of the season.

The Eagles hosted their second annual volleyball tournament, the NCCU Women’s Volleyball Invitational, where they proved to be a different team than what the record showed. With only one loss and three straight victories that weekend, the Eagles claimed second place, a boost of confidence for them. For their outstanding performances Belinda Behncke-Biney, Avaniki Campbell and Rachel Lloyd were selected to the All-Tournament Team.

2008 season Review

EaGles seT aTTendanCe reCord

On election night, Nov. 4, 2008, the Eagles battled arch rival North Carolina A&T in McLendon-McDougald Gym. After a dominating defensive match, the Eagles pulled out a 3-2 victory and set a new attendance record. A record crowd of 874 witnessed this dramatic come-from-behind victory during the event labeled, “Bump, Set... VOTE.”

seniors senT ouT in sTyle

On November 17, the Eagles hosted Winston-Salem State for their last home game of the season. Seniors Kristan Fields, Nadia Hayes, Rachel Lloyd and Ashley Shade had the opportunity to play one more match in McLendon-McDougald Gymnasium. In a game that meant more to them than any, they were determined to go out on top. The Eagles did just that. They dominated the Rams in three straight sets, sending the seniors out with a victory in their last home match.

Several Eagles have left a mark in history at NCCU, earning a spot in the record books. Avaniki Campbell sits at No. 7 in kills per game in a career with 2.42.Campbell is tied with Shaina Pryor for 10th in blocks per game in a career with 0.56. Ashley Shade left her mark on the record books. She currently sits at No. 8 for assists in a season after recording 881 in 2007. Shade also sits among the top-10 in assists in a career with 536 and assists per game in a season for 9.27 in 2007.

Kristan Fields didn’t leave the campus without leaving her mark. She is eighth in all-time assists in a career after recording 536. Also earning a spot in the records books is Nadia Hayes, who sits among the top-10 in block assists in a season, block assists in a career, career blocks per game and total blocks in a career with 185.

Current Eagle Kiara Brown sits at No. 9 in assists per game in a career with 2.73. Leaving NCCU with a few footsteps among the records was Rachel Lloyd, who earned a top-10 spot in several categories. She stands at No. 10 in career service aces with 111. She leads in digs in a season with 593 and stands at No. 9 with 358 digs from 2008. Lloyd has claimed the first, second and sixth place spots on the digs per game in a season chart and leads the way in digs per game for a career. She is also second for digs in a career with 1,352.

Two current Eagles also sit among the record books. Belinda Behncke-Biney is eighth in career service aces per game with 0.51, while Aqiyla Gomez stands in eighth in career blocks per game with 0.68.

WHaT’s nexT?Even through turmoil and hard times, the sun finds a way to shine and hearts find a way to heal. Through the obstacles and the challenges, NCCU learned about themselves and they have moved one step closer to becoming a contender at the next level. With hard times comes a solution. When you hit the bottom, you are bound to rise up. The 2008 season prepared the Eagles for what lies ahead. What lies ahead is 2009.

Chancellor Charlie Nelms assumed his duties as chancellor of North Carolina Central University August 1, 2007.

Prior to joining the NCCU family, Nelms served as vice president for Institutional Development and Student Affairs at Indiana University, which enrolls approximately 100,000 students on eight campuses. In his role as IU’s vice president for Institutional Development and Student Affairs, Nelms was responsible for a combination of duties on the Bloomington campus and systemwide that spanned

university planning, institutional research and effectiveness, enrollment management, student affairs, academic support services, K-12 outreach initiatives, student retention, honors programs, and diversity and equity efforts. In September 2001, TIME magazine named IU’s Bloomington campus the number-one student-centered research university in the nation. Many of the programs cited by TIME were under Nelms’ oversight and direction.

A native of Crawfordsville, Arkansas, Nelms majored in agronomy and chemistry at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, graduating in 1968. He later earned a master’s degree in higher education and student affairs (1971) and a doctoral degree in higher education administration (1977) from Indiana University. Early in his career, he rose through the faculty and administrative ranks as associate dean for Student Development at Earlham College in Indiana (1973-1977), associate director of the Center for Human Development and Education Services at the UAPB (1977-1978), associate dean for Academic Affairs at Indiana University Northwest (1978-1984) and vice president for Student Services at Sinclair Community College in Ohio (1984- 1987).

In 1987, Nelms began a seven-year tenure as chancellor of Indiana University East, a commuter campus serving east-central Indiana. During his tenure there, the campus was the fastest-growing college in the State of Indiana. In 1994, Nelms was named chancellor of the University of Michigan at Flint (UMF), an urban campus that enrolls over 6,500 students and offers a full spectrum of undergraduate and master’s degree programs. Before being recruited to Indiana University in 1998, he resolved a significant campus budget deficit, reversed a four-year enrollment decline, and secured more than $75 million in private gifts to UMF.

A former American Council on Education Fellow and Ford Fellow, Nelms holds honorary degrees from Earlham College and the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. Over the course of his career, he has received numerous awards for his contributions to education and service to students, including the Benjamin Hooks Award for Meritorious Achievement from the Gary (IN) branch of the NAACP, the Distinguished Alumni Service Award from Indiana University, the Distinguished Alumni Award from the IU School of Education, the President’s Medal from the University of Michigan, and the State of Indiana’s Sagamore of the Wabash—the highest civilian award bestowed by the governor.

Nelms is married to Jeanetta Sherrod Nelms. They have one son, Rashad, a graduate of the University of Michigan Law School who serves as a policy officer with the United Nations World Food Programme.

Ingrid Wicker-McCree, Ed.D.Director of Athletics

Second Year • George Washington, 1989

Ingrid Wicker-McCree, Ed.D., was appointed as the Director of Athletics at North Carolina Central University on April 23, 2008 after holding the interim position for five months.

She officially began her new leadership role on May 1, 2008.

Wicker-McCree, who joined the rank of only a handful of women athletic directors in the UNC system, previously served as NCCU’s associate athletics director for internal affairs. She has served in a variety of leadership positions in both conference and national level organizations, most notably as president of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Executive Board from 2004-06, becoming only the second woman to ever hold that position in the league’s history. In addition, she served as a member of the NCAA’s Division II Legislation Committee from 2003-07.

In recognition of her work, Wicker-McCree received the CIAA Leadership Award for Service as president of the Executive Board and was named the CIAA Senior Woman Administrator of the Year in the spring of 2006.

Now entering her 16th year at NCCU, Wicker-McCree has been one of the driving forces behind NCCU’s reclassification to NCAA Division I. Since 1998, she has overseen the internal operations of the Athletics Department, including all compliance and eligibility programs.

Wicker-McCree began her career at NCCU as the head coach for women’s volleyball and softball. She became the first coach in NCCU history to win conference championships in multiple sports, capturing the school’s first-ever CIAA titles in softball (1998) and volleyball (1999, 2004, 2005). A three-time CIAA Volleyball Coach of the Year (1999, 2002, 2005) and former member of the NCAA Division II National Volleyball Committee, Wicker-McCree earned 239 match victories in 12 seasons as head volleyball coach at NCCU. She was also inducted into the NCCU Athletic Hall of Fame in 2004 as head coach of the 1998 softball team.

A native of Durham and a graduate of C.E. Jordan High School, Wicker-McCree played on two North Carolina high school state volleyball championship teams, while also lettering in basketball and track and field. She continued her volleyball playing career as a student-athlete at George Washington University.

Wicker-McCree earned her undergraduate degree in criminal justice from George Washington University in 1989, and a master’s degree in recreation resources administration from North Carolina State University in December 1991. She also completed doctoral studies in higher education administration at North Carolina State University in June 2008.

She began her coaching career as a graduate assistant coach for the women’s volleyball program at N.C. State (1989-90). She then spent two seasons (1992-93) as head volleyball coach and student-athlete academic counselor at North Carolina A&T State University before returning to her hometown to begin her NCCU tenure in August 1994.

Wicker-McCree has been involved as a player and coach in the USA Volleyball Carolina Region. She also served as director of three USAV Junior Olympic Teams (ages 18, 16, 14 and under) and director of the Y.M.C.A. Middle School Girls’ Volleyball Camp (ages 10-14).

Wicker-McCree and her husband, Geno McCree, a three-sport collegiate student-athlete and 1991 graduate of Elon University, are the proud parents of Alexia (11), Quinton (8) and Sydney (5).

Founded as the National Religious Training School and Chautauqua, North Carolina Central University (NCCU) became the nation’s first state-supported historically black liberal arts college. In 1923, the National Training School became the state-supported Durham State Normal School, devoted to “the training of teachers for the Colored Public Schools of North Carolina.”

Two years later, Dr. Shepard was able to persuade the General Assembly to take a revolutionary step, making the institution a liberal arts college and naming it North Carolina College for Negroes in 1925. The School of Law was established in 1940 and the School of Library Science in 1941. By the time of Dr. Shepard’s death on October 6, 1947, the institution that had become North Carolina College at Durham was fully-accredited, highly respected and had become the alma mater of a growing list of distinguished alumni.

Today, under the leadership of Chancellor Charlie Nelms, NCCU is a comprehensive university offering more than 100 bachelor’s degrees in various disciplines, 40 master’s degree programs and three professional degrees in law. The university reaches out to all racial and ethnic groups, and has a diverse student population of more than 8,000.

New INItIatIveS

NCCU is on the cutting edge with its

Biomanufacturing Research Institute and Technology Enterprise known as BRITE. The institute offers new bachelor’s and master’s degrees in pharmaceutical science. These programs provide students with core scientific competencies in biology or chemistry as well as hands-on laboratory practice. In addition, there are seminar courses in drug development operations, FDA regulations, quality assurance and control, and intellectual property and patent law. NCCU’s BRITE is an important part of the statewide initiative to make North Carolina a premiere provider of skilled workers for the biotechnology industry.

The School of Law has won kudos for providing top-notch legal education. According to Vault, Inc., a publishing firm that researches and collects data on diverse professions, the law school has not received the acknowledgment it is due. Vault surveyed 512 recruiters

who identified 25 “underrated” schools, and the NCCU School of Law was ranked at number 14.

NCCU and the African American Jazz Caucus are partnering to form the NCCU/AAJC Jazz Research Institute (NAJRI) in an effort to preserve the integrity of jazz as an African American art form. One of the functions of the Institute will be to address the critical artistic and economic situation of jazz in the African American community as well as develop other initiatives such as a North Carolina Hall of Fame dedicated to highlighting the work of jazz artists from North Carolina.

In an effort to bring more study abroad options to students, NCCU has been accepted as a member of the International Student Exchange Program (ISEP), a nonprofit membership organization that provides affordable and diverse study abroad and exchange opportunities to students around the world. NCCU is only one of four historically black college or university in the ISEP network. ISEP membership makes it possible for NCCU students to study abroad at over 135 different universities in 39 countries.

NCCU is the first historically black institution in the nation to have an athletic training education program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs.

Built upon the motto of Truth and Service, NCCU is a university committed to preparing and equipping students with the knowledge and skills to compete in the global marketplace.

NCCU hIGhLIGhtS

• NCCU was the fastest growing institution in the University of North Carolina System. At 5.5 percent for fall 2006, NCCU surpassed the UNC System’s average rate of growth of 3.1 percent.

• Black Enterprise magazine named NCCU one of the Top 50 Colleges for African Americans in the nation in its September 2006 edition. NCCU was ranked No. 30.

• The Golden LEAF Foundation awarded $2.3 million to the Biomanufacturing Research Institute and Technology Enterprise.

• In 2006, NCCU’s School of Law students passed the State Bar Examination at a rate of 86 percent; the highest of any other historically black school in the country.

• NCCU received accreditation of its bachelor’s and master’s programs in business administration from the Assembly of American Colleges and Schools of Business International.

• NCCU received a $150,000 grant from the Darden Restaurants Foundation to establish a Culinary Teaching Laboratory at the university to support its Hospitality and Tourism Program.

• An endowment in the amount of $100,000 was awarded for the Christopher S. Meldrum Chemistry Scholarship Fund to establish a scholarship for chemistry majors.

• NCCU led in recruiting National Achievement Scholars. NCCU was No. 3 in the state and tied for third place among historically black colleges and universities across the nation.

North Carolina Central University is competing in its third year of reclassification as an NCAA Division I institution (Football Championship Subdivision), and the Eagles will be playing as an independent during the 2008-09 athletics campaign.

Fourteen men’s and women’s sports teams participate in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) competition at the Division I-FCS level. Men’s intercollegiate teams include football, basketball, baseball, indoor and outdoor track & field, tennis, golf and cross country. Women’s intercollegiate teams include basketball, volleyball, indoor and outdoor track & field, tennis, softball, bowling and cross country.

NCCU’s athletic programs have enjoyed regional and national recognition for years, headlined by the 1989 NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball National Championship.

NCCU’s commitment to a balanced athletic program, providing equitable resources to all of its sports teams, is abundantly apparent. In five of the last eight years in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), NCCU claimed the Loretta Taylor All-Sports Trophy, recognizing the top all-around women’s program in the conference.

In 2007-08, NCCU’s first season of Division I (FCS)

competition, the women’s volleyball team kicked off the Division I era with a dramatic, come-from-behind win over N.C. State, then cruised to 21 victories, all against Division I opponents. The football team finished its first Division I season with a 6-4 record, the Eagles fourth straight winning season. The men’s and women’s cross country teams each won four of their seven events. The men’s basketball team played one of the toughest schedules in the country, while traveling more than 22,000 miles and playing in 13 different states. The squad earned a road victory over the eventual Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) champions and capped the season with a win over rival Winston-Salem State University at the MEAC Tournament. Finally, the track and field program won two events at the prestigious Penn Relays and qualified two student-athletes for the USA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Boston.

In 2006-07, NCCU’s final season in the NCAA Division II, the Eagles placed 24th in the final standings of the U.S. Sports Academy Directors’ Cup, the prestigious award presented annually to the best overall collegiate athletics programs in the country.

In 2006-07, NCCU won four CIAA team championships and participated in nine NCAA Division II Championship events.

The 1989 men’s basketball team won the NCAA Division II National Championship by defeating Southeast Missouri State 73-46 in the title game on March 25, 1989. The Eagles also captured an NCAA Division II Regional Championship in 1993.

Several former student-athletes and coaches are nationally and internationally known.

Heading the charge of the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games was Dr. LeRoy T. Walker, President of the U.S. Olympic Committee, who lifted the Eagle track & field program to international prominence during his unprecedented tenure as head coach at NCCU.

Under Walker’s reign, the Eagles produced 30 national titles, 77 All-Americans, and eight Olympic medalists. Legendary basketball practitioner, John B. McLendon, a member of the National Basketball Hall of Fame, established a remarkable record of 239-68 (.779) as an Eagle head coach from 1940 to 1952. A student of Dr. James Naismith, the inventor of the game of basketball, McLendon is credited with the development of the zone press, fast break and four corners offense.

Boston Celtics great Sam Jones,

a student-athlete under McLendon and a fellow Hall-of-Famer, became the first black player to be drafted in the first round after scoring a record 1,745 points during his stellar NCCU career.

Internationally-renowned artist, Ernie Barnes - best-known for his famous paintings seen on the 1970s sitcom “Good Times” - played football for the NCCU prior to a professional gridiron career with the Baltimore Colts, San Diego Chargers and Denver Broncos.

The LeRoy T. Walker Physical Education Complex houses a multi-purpose gymnasium, Olympic-sized swimming and diving pool, athletic training facilities, strength and fitness center, and much more.

O’Kelly-Riddick Stadium hosts NCCU football action for a capacity crowd of 10,000 dedicated Eagle fans. In mid-November, McLendon-McDougald Gym lights-up with men’s and women’s basketball excitement.

“Winning” for the Eagles is more than outscoring the opponent, it is excelling in the classroom, actively participating in community service projects and adhering to NCAA rules regarding recruitment and admission of student-athletes.

How can you help the Eagles win? Follow the NCAA rules.

The NCAA defines an institution as the University, its employees, its student-athletes, and its representatives of athletics interests, including parents, alumnus and fans. Therefore beware of the following:

NCAA BYLAW 13.1.2.1

In Division I, representatives of an institution’s athletics interests are prohibited from making in-person, on- or off-campus recruiting contacts, including written and/or telephonic communications with a prospect or the prospect’s relatives or legal guardians.

A prospect is defined as any student who has started classes for the ninth grade, whether the student participates in athletics is not relevant to the classification as a prospect and neither is gender.

Written or telephonic communications includes email, instant messaging, paging, video conferencing, faxing and text messaging.

NCAA Bylaw 16.02.3

An extra benefit is any special arrangement by an institutional employee or a representative of the institution’s athletics interests to provide a student-athlete or the student-athlete’s relative or friend a benefit not expressly authorized by NCAA legislation.

Unless you are willing to give a benefit to all 8,000 students at NCCU, don’t give it to a student-athlete or a prospect.
