The Michigan Tech volleyball team enters its 35th season of competition on a high note in 2009 after qualifying for the NCAA Midwest Regional Tourna-ment a season ago for the first time since 2006. The Huskies finished with a 19-11 record overall and fin-ished second in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Ath-letic Conference North Division with a 12-4 record in conference play. The biggest change from last year’s squad will be new head coach Orlando Gonzalez, who joins the team after spend-ing last season as an assistant coach at GLIAC member North-wood University. He was also the head coach at Rutgers from 2005 to 2007. “I am very excited for the opportunity to take over a suc-cessful program such as Michi-gan Tech,” said Gonzalez. “We have a lot of players returning who want to turn the corner and take the program to the next level.” Despite losing All-American honorable mention selection Jen Jung, Kelsey Skoog, and Christa Jung to graduation, there is plenty of experience on the Huskies’ roster as they return 12 players from last year’s squad. All-Midwest Region Team honorable mention Veronica Armstrong will be counted on to lead the way for the Huskies in her final season wearing the black and gold. Senior Kaari Nevanen stepped up with strong play off the bench last season and will be expected to take on a larger role this season. Senior setter Alison Greene, who didn’t see much playing time last season due to injuries, red-shirt freshman Skylar Paffenroth, and freshman Madeline Haben will compete for the starting role vacated by Skoog. A large junior class, including outside hitters Me-lissa Axtell and Lyndsey Dixon along with middle hitter Amanda Vogt, saw spot duty last season and

should continue to provide strong play again this season. Dixon has proven to be a very versatile player for the Huskies. Sophomore Kristine Sexton exceeded expectations a year ago breaking into the starting lineup on the left side. Also joining the team this season are a pair of mid-

dle hitters. Freshman Lindsey Sathre joins the team from Osseo, Minn., and senior Alicia Schneider, who was a four-year member of the women’s basketball team at Tech. “We are fairly young when it comes to match experience, but it will be important for our older, more veteran players to step up in key situations. We will also need to remain healthy through out the sea-son with our lack of depth at some positions.” The Huskies will open the season at the Wildcat Open in Marquette, Mich., facing Wisconsin-Parkside, Minne-sota-Duluth, Winona State, and California-San Diego. From there, the Huskies will travel to Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., to compete in the Sharks Clas-sic. They will face Palm Beach Atlantic, Lynn, Barry, and Nova

Southeastern before opening the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference portion of their schedule. Ferris State comes to Houghton on Sept. 18 for the Huskies’ home opener as part of a two-week home stand. Tech will again take a break from conference play on Oct. 16-17 when it takes part in the second GLIAC/Great Lakes Valley Conference Crossover Chal-lenge in Lansing, Mich. “Our schedule is tough but it will exciting. We will be tested early and I am excited to see how we will respond to the challenge.”

December 2008. Kastamo grew up in Winthrop Harbor, Ill. where he played on different competitive volleyball teams from fifth grade through high school. He continued his career as a setter for the Michigan Tech men’s club volleyball team for three seasons.

Adam Kastamo

Graduate Assistant

Orlando Gonzalez became the sixth volleyball coach in Michigan Tech school history on Aug. 7th.

Gonzalez spent last season as an assistant volleyball coach at Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference member Northwood University, where he helped the Timberwolves to a GLIAC South Division Championship and NCAA Tournament berth.

From 2005-07, Gonzalez was the head coach at NCAA Division I Rutgers University in New Jersey. He mentored one All-Big East player and his teams posted the second-highest grade point average in the athletic department.

The Kalamazoo, Mich., native spent nearly 10 years as head coach and regional coordinator for USA Michigan Volleyball, an elite high school-level club. His squads consistently qualified for nationals, and Gonzalez was the only coach ever to win the East Coast Championship twice (1998 and 2003). He also had nearly 50 of his athletes earn NCAA Division I scholarships.

In addition to his coaching background, Gonzalez has experience as a camp director and instructor, clinic speaker and college admissions counselor. He is a graduate of Michigan State University with degrees in communication and advertising.
