The mission of Endicott College is to instill in students an understanding of and an appreciation for professional and liberal studies. Deeply woven within this philosophy is the concept of applied learning, which has been the hallmark of Endicott. Linking classroom and off-campus work experience through required internships remains the most distinguishing feature of the College.

Endicott has a vision for the total development of the individual within a community that fosters an appreciation of diversity, international awareness, community service, and moral and ethical values. Endicott is an innovative and vibrant, student-centered institution that supports undergraduate and graduate students in their pursuit of knowledge.

Common threads run through the fabric of the Endicott experience: increased self-confidence, stronger professional skills and technological competencies, and perhaps the most valued of all, lives open to change.

Endicott is the perfect fit for me both academically and athletically. Since Endicott is DIII, I love that I am able to play very competitive volleyball, while still being able to balance my academ-ics and partake in the school’s other amazing extracurricular activities! – Callie Dolan

sierra kenkelDIII programs allow athletes to become well rounded in areas other than sports. Academic achievements are still attainable as well as jobs and internships. Keeping some type of competitive sport in one’s life can be important for more than just athletic reasons. It teaches you teamwork, strategies, problem solving - many attributes that can be used later in life. Endicott offers a great variety of sports to continue that competitive edge. The professors are extremely helpful and always willing to work with you. Endicott has such a beautiful, ocean-side campus too. – Sierra Kenkel

When I was applying to schools, a big part of my decision was being able to play a sport at the collegiate level. I decided on DIII because it gave me the chance to continue my athletic career without it completely taking over my life. Now that I am here, I see that I have definitely made the right decision because I am able to still have time for my academics, social life, as well as hav-ing some free time. – Ashley Norley

2012 will be the 13th season as head coach for Tim Byram and he is looking to bring the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) title back

to Endicott after losing in the finals the past two seasons. The Gulls have had success in the last decade, qualifying for postseason play for the last eight straight years with six seasons of 23+ wins and four conference titles. The success has only made the team and their coach hungrier.

“As always for our program, the goal is to win the CCC title. It’s been a few years of not winning one and our group is anxious to get it back,” says Byram. “With the winning tradition that has been established in recent years, the players expect a lot from themselves. We will have a lot of work to do early to develop as a cohesive unit with a large incoming class but I am very excited for the potential this year’s group has.”

The team has been in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament for three straight seasons now after losing in the semifinals of the CCC Tournament in 2009 and then the finals in 2010 and 2011. In 2011, the team was the #2 seed in the tournament. The Gulls earned a bye in the first round and then handled Salve Regina 3-0 before eventually losing to Roger Williams 3-1 in a very closely contested match. Following the Roger Williams loss, Endicott advanced to the ECAC Tournament where they were awarded the #3 seed in the tournament. In the opening round, the Gulls knocked off #6 seed Emmanuel 3-2 to set up a matchup with Plymouth State. Endicott fought hard but eventually fell 3-2.

The Gulls final record in 2011 was 16-16, 8-1 in conference play. The double digit wins marks the 14th straight year Endicott has finished with 10+ wins and Byram has accounted for the last 12. His overall record at Endicott now stands at 240-180 (.571), with an in conference record of 90-18 (.833).

For the upcoming 2012 season, Endicott is bringing back two of the top three offensive leaders from last year’s squad in senior Falyn Torelli and junior Callie Dolan, while also bringing back top defensive players Ashley Norley and Gillian Kucharski who are both seniors.

Torelli, an outside hitter named to the All-CCC Honorable Mention team, accounted for 247 kills (2.13/s) and 227 digs (1.96/s) while playing in all of the team’s 32 matches, while Dolan, a middle/outside, totaled 238 kills (2.00/s) and 66 total blocks (.55/s) in 32 matches. Sophomore middle/right side Hannah Dahlgren looks to build upon her solid freshman year campaign after registering 145 kills (1.21/s) and a team high 94 total blocks (0.78/s).

Libero Ashley Norley, who was also named an All-CCC Honorable Men-tion, recorded 561 digs (4.87/s) while only committing 54 receive errors in a season that saw her play in all 32 matches as well. Defensive special-ist Gillian Kucharski notched 260 digs of her own and looks to provide a defensive mindset when she is on the court. The duo looks to anchor a solid defensive core that includes junior Carly Beers and sophomores Emily

Gillich, Jessica Petrucci and Sierra Kenkel. The group contributed a combined 252 digs as well.

The incoming class of freshmen looks to compete for playing time right away with middles Mackenzie Guerre (Carlsbad HS, Solana Beach VBC) and Alexis Watts (Rancho Bernardo HS, San Diego VBC) pushing hard to earn their court time. Outside/right side Jacqueline Cone (Salem, N.H., Latitude 42 VBC) is a capable offensive player who will challenge at both positions as well. Anastasia Baird (Canyon Ridge HS, South Idaho VBC) brings a wealth of versatility to the program and is capable of playing outside/right side/middle and will push for her own time as well. Setter Alexandra VandeMerkt (Riverside-Brookfield HS) is an athletic set-ter from Illinois that brings a strong court sense to the program that will help her compete with junior Carly Beers for setting duties.

The 2012 schedule sees Endicott again facing a stiff out of conference schedule. Matches against national runner up Christopher Newport, Southwestern (Texas), University of Chicago, Elmhurst and UMass Boston are key matches as they finished #2, tied 17, tied 17, #19 and #20 on the final national poll. Nearly 20 of the team’s matches come against programs that were ranked either region-ally or nationally, with seven being against top 25 teams, and 10 of the top 15 in New England. The Gulls eagerly await their September 15th match against Roger Williams who has eliminated them two straight years in the finals. Endicott hopes that this tough regular season schedule will help lead the team to post season suc-cess and a fifth conference championship.

Tim Byram

The Endicott women’s volleyball team has been under the guidance of Tim Byram since the start of the millennium.

The program has developed into one of the top teams in both the conference and New England, having made the conference finals six out of the last eight seasons, winning four of them. With an overall record of 240-180 (.571) and a conference record of 90-18 (.829) in the twelve years with Byram at the helm, the team is looking to continue the level of success and return to the NCAA tournament.

One of Byram’s beliefs is to schedule top out of conference teams to challenge his team throughout the season. This year’s schedule consists of five teams that finished the season ranked in the top 25 AVCA national poll, and three others that were in the top 25 during the season. The results are easy to see by having been selected for post season play each of the last eight seasons.

“Generally, we will schedule as tough as possible and play the best competition to get ready for post season play,” Coach Byram stated.

Throughout the difficult schedule, travel and practices, academics have remained a top priority in his program. During his tenure, 15 women have been named Academic

All-Conference and there have been three that were named the Conference Senior Scholar Athlete of the Year.

“Dedication in the classroom is a must in my program. The women know that they are here for a quality education and that playing volleyball is secondary to that. We take pride in our performance both on and off the court.”

Within his philosophy, Byram likes drills and exercises that foster competition. The large majority of his practices and drills focus around game-like situations.

“We will do more drills in a six on six format then small group drill work because it has to be game like. Practicing game situations will only strengthen our chances for success when the situation arises in the middle of a match.”

With such a competitive environment in the gym that challenges the women to push each other to be the best, the individual accolades have surely been received. There have been numerous weekly and individual post season honors earned by the players but the award the team is always striving for is the CCC Championship. Each player knows that they will all be dependent on each other for the team to raise its fifth banner this season.
