your every pre-wedding beauty need,

package, which includes everything

from a lifestyle consultation, anti-

ageing facial and body polish to colon

cleansing and cellulite therapy.

Dr Naina, Olay

ambassador, spoke to

EB to offer her advice on

pre-wedding grooming

● No matter how busy you

are, always make sure you

don’t miss out on your

sleep – eight hours a night

is recommended.

● Include plenty of fresh fruit

and vegetables in

your diet and drink lots

of water. Vitamin

supplements are a good

way to top up on nutrients,

but are not a substitute for

healthy eating.

● Exercising will not only

keep you fit, but is a great

stress buster to manage

any pre-wedding anxiety.

● Follow a daily skin and

beauty regime in the run-up

to the wedding with Olay’s

Natural White Healthy

Fairness Range to obtain a

radiant glow on your

big day.

Rachel Ball and Mariano SilvestriWedding date: August 13 2009

Married at: St Paul’s church, then the Heathercliffe Country House Hotel, Cheshire, England

22 e m i r a t e s b r i d e A p r i l 2 0 1 0

● Only three things last after the wedding day – memories, rings and pictures. Make sure the rings and the photographer are the best you can afford.● Don’t be afraid to ask friends and family to help – my mum was the greatest wedding planner, and a friend who couldn’t attend the wedding took care of all our stationery as a gift. It was the best present we got.● Don’t sweat the small stuff, it sorts itself out in the end. If I can do it with guests coming from every continent and families who don’t speak the same language, you can too!

RACHEL’S WEDDING TIPS:

achel Ball, 24, met Argentine-born Mariano

Silvestri, 29, when they both began work at one of

Dubai’s five-star hotels on the same day. It was the

first time Rachel had lived outside her native UK,

and also the first time for Mariano outside his home

country – as a result, the language barrier caused a few problems at

first, but after a month’s crash course in English for Mariano, the

couple began dating. If you could really call it dating – as struggling

hotel workers they used to meet on the rooftops of their buildings

and watch the growing Dubai construction. After one year and a trip

to the UK later to meet Rachel’s parents, Mariano proposed with

an ornate, turn of the century platinum and diamond ring Rachel

inherited from her grandmother at the age of 13. The hen party

was organised by Rachel’s bridesmaid Luciana, who was originally

a friend of Mariano’s from Argentina, which had a Venice theme

where the girls took to the waterways of the Madinat Jumeirah in

Abras, while wearing ornate masks.

We thought about marrying in Mexico as a half-

way point between the UK and Argentina, but

in the end marrying in my village was the best

option – we were blessed with great weather

and plenty of family and friends, and now we’re

planning to do it all again in Argentina.

● Venue: St Paul’s, Helsby, the village church

I have been a member of since a baby.

● Reception venue: The Heathercliffe Country

House Hotel. I used to work here in my early

teens as a waitress! It’s an elegant old country

house and has been home to big names and

royalty, including John Paul Getty and the exiled

Queen of Yugoslavia.

● Theme: English country garden – with an

Argentine flair

● Guests: We had 150 people who travelled

from as close as half a mile down the road, to

as far away as Australia, Argentina, Miami and

Oman, which made it all the more special.

● Dress: I got my Maggie Sottero gown from

Aristocrats in Chester. Walking into the shop

was like entering an elegant parlour. I also had

a cathedral-length veil studded with Swarovski

crystals. I was worried that it would be awkward

and annoying, but it wasn’t and the effect was

truly fantastic.

● Bridesmaids: The lilac dresses were set

off perfectly by the Dorothy bags my auntie

made for the occasion – gorgeous. And my

sister, best Dubai friend and best home friend’s

daughter were picture-perfect!

● Cake: The cake was made by my mother’s

friend, who also made cupcakes for the evening

buffet. Throughout the evening, they received

more compliments than my dress!

● Flowers: We kept it in the family with the

flowers, with one of my great uncles providing

the amazing English country flower bridal

bouquets, buttonholes and beautiful white

birdcage centrepieces – as well as the simply

gorgeous 1911 Ford Model T wedding car.

● Food: The meal was a traditional roast

Cheshire turkey, accompanied by Argentine

wine from Mariano’s province. We tried to mix

and match the cultures as much as we could.

● Photographer: As soon as I saw Liam’s

website I knew he was the photographer for

me – I’d fly him to the other side of the world

if I had to. He was a true professional, made

everyone relaxed and just got on with the job

with minimal intrusion.

● Unique touches: Our vicar was wonderful,

learning her opening welcome in Spanish

to make Mariano’s family feel comfortable.

My father also gave part of his speech in

Spanish! We also had my old band play at

the reception – and I just had to join in for a

few numbers.

Hiva Zarghampour and Khaled Al Dasher

Wedding date: 26th and 28th November 2009

Location: Burj Al Arab, Dubai

● Plan ahead, look at other weddings on the internet and in Emirates Bride for ideas.● Work with vendors you are comfortable with even if it means paying that little extra. Being relaxed on your big day is priceless.● Dance like you have never danced before; enjoy every moment as it flies by so quickly.● If you do not have a wedding planner at least have a host.● Have a positive attitude and don’t let anything get you down, things do go wrong but you have to overlook it.

HIVA’S WEDDING TIPS:

ritish-born Hiva and Egyptian-born Khaled, both 25,

met at the American University in Dubai during their

first class in 2004, and their official courtship, lasted

two years. Ever the romantic, Khaled showered Hiva

with gifts and flowers as the friendship blossomed

into something stronger. Their fairytale first date saw Khaled

reserve the entire BiCE Sky Bar at the top of the Hilton Jumeirah

for the evening, with candles and sweeping views of The Palm

Jumeirah. On their second year anniversary, Khaled recreated the

romance of their first date, and during dinner dropped to his knee

and proposed. An extravagant engagement party followed on Fort

Island, Mina A’Salam, on November 28, 2008. Preparation started

almost immediately, and as perfectionists and hands-on organisers,

every element was precision planned. After last minute chaos pre-

wedding, the day was heavenly and exactly what the newlywed

couple wanted it to be and more.

● Venue: We chose the Marina Garden at the

Burj Al Arab because it is the most luxurious

hotel in the world and it is the greatest

monument of Dubai.

● Reception: Burj Al Arab (Al Falak Ballroom)

● Theme: We went for a ‘modern with a

twist’ theme with Persian influence, and a

Royal Purple colour scheme – because it’s our

favourite colour and ‘the’ colour of 2009.

● Guests: Blessing ceremony 75, wedding

reception 150.

● Ring size: The cut is round brilliant, 4 carat;

the diamond is from Belgium and the ring

setting from Switzerland.

● The dress: I had two dresses – the ceremony

dress was by Maggie Sottero and the wedding

dress Sa belle also by Maggie Sottero, both

from Rodeo Drive in Los Angeles.

● Shoes: White high heel shoes, which I bought

in a boutique on Rodeo Drive.

● Veil: I had a very small but to the point veil,

which I bought from the Bridal Room.

● Groom suit: Giorgio Armani Tuxedo

● Cake: It was two metres in height and made

in the Burj Al Arab’s pastry kitchen. It was vanilla

and fresh cream, which was delicious.

● Flowers: Empire Events did the flowers and

we had white and lavender avalanche roses,

purple presilas, orchid's and hydrangea’s.

Presilas are beautiful but rare and only come

around that season.

● Favours: Patchi chocolate gift boxes, heart-

shaped china ornaments customised with our

names, date and venue. Gold bags with gold

Hershey's kisses. Portable studio pictures given

to the guests on the day.

● Food: All food was served silver-service

style. For starters, we had carpaccio, shrimp

cocktail, smoked salmon and tomato and

mozzarella caprese. The main was fillet mignon

with a selection of three sauces, king prawns

and hamour in lemon butter sauce, marinated

chicken breast in a cream white mushroom

sauce, fettuccini Alfredo and stuffed favioli.

● Dessert: Crème Brule, tiramisu, chocolate

dipped strawberries, chocolate éclairs,

chocolate profiteroles, mini heart shape

desserts, exotic fruit platter and an international

cheese board.

● Honeymoon: It started in our panoramic

suite at the Burj Al Arab followed by the

Shangri-La Resort in Maldives. It was heaven

on earth and the water and sunsets were truly

phenomenal.

● Any little unique extras: We used western

vows as a part of traditional Persian ceremony,

which made the ceremony different. We

also threw doves, and the Persian table was

decorated with lots of unique items.

● Have a running tally of everything you need to do as the more you tick off, the more you add on.● Thoroughly research your photographer!● Take everything in on the day and just relax as it’s such an enjoyable time.

MARTINE’S WEDDING TIPS:

outh African-born Martine, 30, met Jason, 32, in 2001 having

just turned 21. Chosen to represent South Africa for the opening

of the Animal Kingdom Lodge at Walt Disney World in Florida,

Martine ended up living next to Jason in staff accommodation

– she was immediately intrigued by his childhood growing up

in Boston. After dating for six months, both Martine and Jason’s contracts

ended and they returned to their respective home countries of South Africa

and America. After staying in touch over the phone, romance lept in and

Jason bought a ticket to Cape Town to see Martine. After living together

for four months, the couple moved to London in 2002 for two years, before

moving to Dubai, where Martine’s family lives. On holiday in Nepal, in

a hidden garden in Kathmandu, Jason proposed producing a stunning

custom-made ring from Damas. They chose Dubai as the destination for

their wedding – middle ground between their two homes – spending six

months arranging the wedding of a lifetime.

● Ceremony venue: St Francis of Assisi

Catholic Church in Jebel Ali

● Reception: Radisson Blu Hotel in Dubai

Media City – the ballroom was perfect as

it had black detail on the walls, which was

very modern and fit with my theme.

● Theme: White, silver and black. These

are my favourite colours and suited the

venue perfectly.

● Number of guests: We decided 60 was

a good amount – friends from Dubai and

our close family from abroad.

● Rings: We bought both our rings from

Safari Gems in the Gold and Diamond

Park. Mine had two rows of diamonds. We

are hoping to get them engraved on our

one year anniversary.

● The dress: My sister took me to The

Wedding Shop where and I tried on 11

gowns. I chose number 10, an Alfred

Angelo. A beautiful white dress with a

strapless sequined top. The skirt was wide

and long – modern yet fun.

● Shoes: Silver, sparkly strappies

bought from Aldo with a low heel, as

I knew I’d be on my feet all day.

● Veil: Handmade by Barbara who

was recommended to me by The

Wedding Shop.

● Groom suit: The suit was made by

Montexa in Satwa, Jason picked out a

Bostonian style cut that fit perfectly and

looked great on the day.

● Cake: I was recommended Frosted.

The cake was perfect with three tiers

– dark chocolate with buttercream,

white chocolate mud cake with vanilla

buttercream and fruit cake with brandy.

● Flowers: As my theme was white, silver

and black, I decided to have all white

flowers, which were provided by Oleander

– they were stunning.

● Favours: I wanted something that my

guests could use afterwards and so I

went to TheBrideSideofLife.com and had

custom-made fans designed.

● Food: The food was done by the

Radisson Blu and included a starter (Roma

tomato, Feta cheese and Kalamata olives

terrine served with wild roquette salad

and babaganouche quenelle), main dish

(Free range chicken breast with leeks and

goat cheese stuffing on herbed potatoes,

buttered asparagus and rosemary jus) and

our wedding cake was offered as dessert.

● Honeymoon: Greece, so that we could

have both a city and island break visiting,

Athens, Mykonos and Santorini.

Businesswoman and daughter of tycoon Donald Trump,

Ivanka chose for her wedding last year to Jared Kushner

a beautifully demure capped sleeve lace gown by Vera

Wang. Inspired by a wedding dress worn by actress Grace

Kelly in 1956, Ivanka chose a romantic and incredibly

intricate design, with three different tiers of hand-

was adorned with jewellery from her own collection.

dramatic would do for her London wedding,

so she enlisted the help of good friend John

Galliano to create her gown. Gwen, a huge fan of

statement style, opted for a unique pink tulle and

cream silk dress, teamed with ever-bold lipstick

organised a second wedding in Los Angeles so

she could wear it again.

When Katie Holmes married Hollywood legend Tom

then your hairstyle needs to

veer on the side of classic

but with a modern twist to

bring it firmly into the new

decade. A popular up-to-

date style being champi-

oned by celebrities such as

Diane Kruger is the front

braid look, and it couldn’t

be simpler to achieve. As

you are opting for a more romantic touch as opposed

to an overtly fashion themed look, let the rest of the hair hang loose

in tumbling waves to add an essential feminine feel.

or brides favouring

a more laidback

and earthy look

tumbling, loose waves are

a must. This style, which

suits those with longer

locks best, flaunts your

feminine and romantic side with mini-

mum fuss. For inspiration look to super-

model Gisele – a fan of the loose curl, she

uses her hair to frame her face and give a

toned down, unfussy vibe to a red carpet

dress. For an added bohemian touch, place

flower blossoms through the hair or add a

gentle wreath

as a headpiece, which will finish this look

off perfectly.

f you have dreams of channel-

ling Audrey Hepburn, Grace

Kelly and the modern day lead-

ing lady equivalent, Penelope Cruz,

then you are a truly traditional

bride. Timeless and classic, you need

your hair to reflect this, and nothing

will illustrate the look better than a

tidy and tasteful chic chignon. Let

your dress take centre stage as you

opt for a fashionably sophisticated,

yet subtle, style. ■

nconventional

and fashion-for-

ward brides are

best suited to something

a little bit quirky and

unique for their wed-

ding day, and nothing

will show off an original

flair for fashion than

a headband. Breaking

away from a traditional

veil, take your inspiration from

Scarlett Johansson, who shows,

that with the help of a simple and

beautiful accessory, you can make

any outfit your own.

If you have short or thin hair but

are hankering over this look for your big day,

then cheat your way to long rolling curls by

adding extensions.

A full or side fringe is a great way

to keep this look very ‘today’ and

will keep features softer and more

framed than simply scraping all your

hair off your face.

Let your hairpiece complement your

dress – if you plump for an elaborately styled dress,

keep your hair and headband simple and visa versa.

hen Mihaela Dimitru

found herself just three

months away from her

big day, sans dress, 10kgs

overweight and with no idea how to how

to start her beauty and fitness regime, she

started to panic. “I used to be a size 10 but

now I’m a size 14 and because of the weight

gain, I don’t even feel like looking for a

dress…” Mihaela grumbled three months

back. But now 10kgs lighter, looking radiant

after her bridal makeover, and dressed to

stun in her customised Meher & Riddhima

couture gown, you wouldn’t believe she was

the same woman. The transformation began

when she went looking for a photographer

and stumbled across the ‘bridal makeover’

service – which includes three months of

personal training, a nutritionist, a personal

shopper and stylist, plus tips and tricks from

a beauty expert to help every bride reach

that often far off final goal of looking (and

feeling) absolutely perfect on their big day.

THE FITNESS MAKEOVERUnder the bridal makeover service, Mihaela

was appointed her very own personal

trainer three times a week. Determined

to trim down and with 10kgs to lose,

the trainer put her on a strict regime of

running, kayaking and Pilates. The run was

scheduled down on the beach to put her

body under greater extremes and encourage

greater weight loss. “It was incredibly tough

going as the weather was still pretty hot,

and not being very fit meant I kept running

out of breath. But I soon found myself

getting used to it and the kilos just melted

off.” Due to Mihaela’s ‘apple’ type physique

(heavy set shoulders and round stomach),

the personal trainer also suggested sea

kayaking. Once a week they hit the sea

for a 4-6km kayak, which helped to trim

Mihaela’s waist and flatten her stomach.

“I wanted to look sexy in my gown so I

needed to make sure my stomach was super

flat and my shoulders and arms were toned

– for those, kayaking really did the trick.”

Mihaela was also instructed to practice

Pilates every day. “I was given one private

session a week with the instructor but also

a workout DVD to take home for daily

homework. I had never done Pilates before,

but the results were amazing. Not only did

my posture improve, but I definitely toned

up and became more lithe. Most dancers

do Pilates and I completely understand why

– it’s a fantastic way to sculpt the body.”

equipped gyms all over Dubai. Shape

THE DIET MAKEOVERTo ensure Mihaela balanced her weight-

loss efforts with a healthy diet, she visited

a personal nutritionist. She was asked to

record everything she ate and drank over

the next three months, with a weekly

‘check-in’ to make sure Mihaela stuck to

the rigid programme. “She suggested I

ate six small meals a day and cook meals

from the GI Diet recipe book, which

encompassed plenty of salads, lean meat

and wholegrains. I also had to avoid sugar,

processed food, anything high in fat, dairy,

refined grains and complex carbs – and I

wasn’t allowed to drink anything bar water

and green tea! Within a week I discovered

I had boundless energy and my skin, eyes

and hair really started to glow.”After just

two months, with the weight steadily

shifting, Mihaela’s nutritionist signed

her up for the Health Factory’s Detox

Programme. “This included six calorie-

controlled meals delivered six times

six times a week to help me detox and

shed that final ‘bloat’. I lost 4kgs more

and felt fantastic. Plus, I didn’t have to

shop or cook, which was an absolute gift

during the busy weeks leading up to the

wedding, when I barely even had time

to think!” Having seen the benefits of the

well-balanced eating plan, Mihaela’s diet

has since the wedding, continued down

the healthy route. “I used to indulge in

moussaka, curries and high-fat foods,

and of course the weight just piled on.

Now I’ve learnt to eat healthly because

I can really see and feel the benefits.

It was a long-term investment to have

a nutritionist – it changed my whole

perspective and approach to eating. Now

I don’t try to diet, I just eat healthly.”

Anthony Worrell Thompson’s GI Diet.

THE FASHION MAKEOVERMihaela was also appointed a personal

shopper to help on her quest to find the

perfect dress. She wanted something totally

unique and more akin to an Oscar’s gown

rather than the traditional bridal dress. After

much research and visiting various tailors,

boutiques, shopping malls and designers

with her shopper, she settled on Meher &

Riddhima, who made her a stunning custom-

made gown. “I had never heard of Meher &

Riddhima before and I was really pleasantly

surprised. I felt like a celebrity having my

own personal shopper to find me the ‘perfect’

designer to cater for my specific needs. She

also helped liaise with Meher to choose the

right flattering fit, material and detailing.

We met several times over the course of the

months and conceptualised the dress bit by

bit. I cannot express how amazing it is having

such royal treatment. I can see why celebrities

have their own personal stylists. They open

your eyes to a whole new world that you

didn’t know existed – like having your own

personal little black book of style.” Mihaela

also found the convenience of having someone

by your side, who you trust implicitly, to help

you through every step of putting together

your dream outfit an enormous weight off her

shoulders. “I also went shopping with Meher

to find the right shoes and accessories to go

with the dress. Personal shopping really is a

necessary luxury.”

THE BEAUTY MAKEOVERNext step in Mihaela’s transformation was to

be appointed a beauty expert who, after their

first meeting, helped create a tailor-made

regime for her along with conceptualising

her look for the big day. “She asked me if was

interested in any radical cosmetic treatments

such as botox, fillers or laser resurfacing,

as she had the key contacts to all the

recommended doctors in those areas. But,

she suggested to go natural as she thought

I had great skin and features.”

Having decided to indulge in a day of

pampering the day before the wedding, the

beauty expert went off to research where

she could get the perfect pre-wedding

manicure and pedicure, massage, facial

and hair treatment all under one roof, to

save time traipsing from spa to spa.

“Several weeks later she came back with

an appointment at Sera Beauty Lounge

where I was booked in for all the necessary

treatments. She had spent weeks going to

all the various spas and sampling out their

services and found Sera to be the best in

terms of service and treatments. It was

useful having someone there to do all the

groundwork for you. I started off with an

Elemis scrub and nourishing milk bath,

followed by an intensely relaxing massage.

I then had a deep cleansing facial to

eradicate impurities and brighten and

freshen my skin. I had an instant peachy

glow and felt like I was walking on air!”

After a mani-pedi, which left her tips and

toes buffed, prepped and perfectly painted,

it was topped off with a luxurious hot oil

treatment for her hair. “I couldn’t have been

more ready for the big day in question.”

Two months prior to the big day,

Mihaela and her beauty expert sat down

to conceptualise the ‘look’ for Mihaela’s

wedding, looking at several celebrity styles

before deciding on a natural fresh look, with

smoky eyes and nude lips. “We felt my hair

was better suited down, so we went for loose

tumbling curls framed with a fresh flower

set in a clip. This took quite a while to

finalise and I met with the make-up artist

several times to get the look just right so

I felt comfortable and confident for the big

day. I never realised how much time and

preparation went into looking this good, but

every single minute spent was well worth it.”

WHY GO: When it comes to

reclining beachside, it’s hard to

ignore The Maldives.

The pearls of the Indian

Ocean, as it’s popularly known,

are situated in South West of Sri

Lanka and are a series of ancient

reefs that grew up around the

sides of towering prehistoric

volcanoes, which have long since

sunk into the ocean, leaving

behind the coral islands.

With its cobalt blue waters,

fresh lagoons, sandy white

beaches and clichéd swaying

palm trees, The Maldives is a

tropical haven and one of the

few places around the world

where you can enjoy complete

and utter privacy.

Spend your days snorkeling,

sunbathing and simply recharging.

If you’re growing slightly tired of

spending your days hammock-

swinging and cocktail-sipping

though, take a boat cruise around the

nearby islands or try your hand at

scuba diving, sailing or fishing.

WHEN TO VISIT: To soak up the best

of The Maldives’ summer rays, visit

during the dry season (December to

April).

MUST-DO: An ambitious scuba dive

in the deep lagoons, where the water is

deliciously bath temperature, is a must.

WHY GO: The City of Romance

needs no introduction. Couples,

particularly honeymooners, flock

to Paris for its impeccable cuisine,

designer shopping, art, museums,

sightseeing and romance.

For the truly eclectic Parisian

experience, head to Montmartre.

This area boasts some of the city’s

best patisseries and boulangeries,

the stunningly stark, alabaster

Sacré-Coeur Basilica, the famed

Moulin Rouge, a heritage flea

market with authentic French

mementos, and even a small

vineyard in the Rue Saint-Vincent.

The Rue de la Paix meanwhile

is dubbed the ‘richest street in

Paris’ and is where you’ll find

the world’s most up-market

jewellers including Cartier and

Van Cleef & Appels, as well as a

plethora of designer boutiques

It’s also a mere stones throw from

the city’s most elegant landmarks

– Place Vendômem, l’Opéra, the

Tuileries gardens and the Louvre.

A gastronomes’ delight, Paris

has plenty of fine-dining options,

with L’Atelier de Joel Robuchon

one of the most exquisite.

WHEN TO VISIT: The summer

crowds and long queues can be

frustrating. Time your visit a

month shy either side of the peak

season (avoid June to September)

to enjoy warmer weather.

MUST-DO: The Eiffel Tower is

one attraction on every tourist’s

itinerary. With views Paris’ most

treasured monument rising up

above the city’s skyline from

almost every vantage point

in Paris, it’s not until you’re

ascending the iron lattice tower’s

hydraulic lifts, that you realise its

true beauty.

WHY GO: Clayoquot Sound,

with its crisp mountain air and

scenic surrounds, is undoubtedly

one of the most luxurious

“outdoor” honeymoon

destinations around.

The waters of Bedwell

Sound glisten in the sunlight

and the bordering expanse of

snow-capped mountains and

centuries-old forests are a far

cry from the hectic metropolis.

The area includes parts of the

Pacific Rim National Park

Reserve and some of Strathcona

Provincial Park – both popular

spots for hiking.

If you opt to stay at Clayoquot

Wilderness Resort, you’ll be

“glamping” (ie “glamorous

camping”), and the four-star

rated retreat is proof that the

great outdoors and luxury can

indeed go hand-in-hand.

Accommodation might take

the form of tents, but these

are not just any tents – they’re

spacious and sit waterfront

on raised wooden platforms,

furnished with queen-sized

beds, cosy duvets, antique

dressers and camp stoves. There

are wood-fired hot tubs, a day

spa on-site and gourmet meals,

which of an evening are served

by candlelight and paired with

wine by an in-house sommelier.

In this remote wilderness

there are no televisions, no

internet and the chances of

mobile reception are slim. Yet

it’s not about deprivation, it’s

about simplification and the

enhancement of experience.

Who needs mod cons when

there are bears to observe, river

rapids to conquer, horses and

mountain bikes to ride and

salmon and halibut to catch?

WHEN TO VISIT: May to

August.

MUST-DO: A guided bear

watching tour aboard a Zodiac

boat should be on your to-do

list. Sonora Island, located

at the north end of British

Columbia’s Destination Sound,

is one of the best spots to spy

the Black and Grizzly bears in

WHY GO: Queenstown hasn’t

earned its moniker of “adventure

capital of the world” without

reason. This mountain town

is the epicentre for thrill

seekers of all levels and offers

a veritable playground for

intrepid newlyweds opting for

a bit of adventure, as well as the

opportunity to relax.

For water sport enthusiasts,

hop aboard the Shotover Jet for a

white-knuckle joy ride down the

aptly named Shotover River, or

opt for a cruise with Dart River

Safaris, which lets you explore

the natural beauty of the world

heritage-listed Mount Aspiring

National Park from the comfort

of the boat, which has heated

seats and plenty of blankets.

In town there are designer

boutiques, quaint cafes to warm

up with a hot chocolate and for

some deep relaxation visit the

Onsen Hot Pools, where you’ll be

greeted with breathtaking views

of the mountains from your own

private cedar-lined hot tub.

In the evenings, slow down the

pace with a romantic ride aboard

the Skyline Gondola. Touted as

the steepest lift in the Southern

Hemisphere, the gondola

carries visitors high above the

town and, once at the top of

Bob’s Peak, there are numerous

observations decks to take in the

twinkling night-time lights of

Queenstown below.

Before heading down, enjoy a

feast of fresh, local produce and

wines from the Queenstown and

Central Otago regions at the

Skyline Restaurant.

WHEN TO VISIT: Primarily a

ski town, visit when the snow

levels are at their best (June to

August).

MUST-DO: The ski fields are

undoubtedly the town’s biggest

draw card, but for the ultimate

alpine experience, take things up

a notch with Harris Mountains

Heli-Ski Tours (www.heliski.

co.nz). The view of the Southern

Alps from the helicopter is

staggering enough, but the

outlook from the top as you’re

WHY GO: Straddling both

Argentina and Chile, Patagonia

is home to the World Heritage

National Park Torres del

Paine and some of the most

breathtaking, untouched vistas

in the world.

The Park itself is full of

stunning glaciers, lakes, fjords,

mountains, wild flowers and

colourful birdlife, and getting

back to nature is easy with

plenty of hiking trails, nature

walks and river kayaking.

As for accommodation,

EcoCamp Patagonia (www.

ecocamp.travel) gives you the

opportunity to stay in this

remote wilderness while having

as little impact on the natural

habitat as possible.

EcoCamp provides igloo-like

eco “domes” – of which there

are three types – Core, Standard

and Suite – but considering

you are on your honeymoon,

we recommend opting for the

latter. The Suite Domes are built

in the same way as the ancient

native Kaweska’s dwellings, who

were the first inhabitants of the

area. Each dome has a private

bathroom, surprisingly plush

double beds and are heated

by modern low-emission

wood stoves.

The domes are designed to

produce minimal environmental

impact, with each one having its

own composting device to process

waste, while electricity is generated

with a micro-hydro turbine and

solar panels.

EcoCamp will also help you plan

an itinerary of activities during

your stay (as gentle or adventurous

as you choose). Local guides will

lead you on treks, horseback riding,

kayaking, mountain-climbing, fly

fishing and sailing – pretty much

every outdoor activity you can

think of!

WHEN TO VISIT: Weather is often

unpredictable in Patagonia, with

strong winds and sudden storms

common. Summertime (December

through February) is the best

time to visit as temperatures are

generally warmer and trails are

more accessible.

MUST-DO: A tour of the Perito

Moreno Glacier is touted as the

most spectacular excursion in all

of Patagonia, where you’ll take in

impressive natural sites such as

Lake Argentino, as well as quaint

Patagonian farmhouses peppered

along the Mitre riverbank.

WHY GO: For those

newlyweds lured by the call

of the wild, it doesn’t get

much wilder than an African

safari. We’re all fans of David

Attenborough’s documentaries

while perched safely on our

couches, but while the cameras

show the wildlife up-close-

and-personal, it’s not until

you’re plastered up against a

perplex sheet that you realise

the true power of “the wild”.

An immense privilege,

seeing the various animals

in their natural habitat, one

can’t help but develop a deep

and profound respect for

nature.

In order to fully

integrate into the wild

African landscape (without

compromising on luxury,

of course), stay in your very

own safari tent. The Serengeti

spacious elevated safari tents,

couture designers to event planners, all

with one aim in mind: to make your big

day perfect and stress-free.

While you’re there, what better time

to check out their wonderful host of

venues; whether it’s for a romantic soiree,

engagement party, wedding reception or

even your honeymoon, Raffles Dubai has

some truly beautiful spaces. The Botanical

Garden, stretching over a hectare, is

one of Dubai’s most cherished green

pockets, ideal for an alfresco celebration.

Or perhaps the award-winning Chinese

restaurant Noble House, situated at the

pinnacle of the hotel’s distinctive pyramid

structure, which offers panoramic views of

the city’s skyline from its outdoor terrace,

is more suited to your desires. No visit to

Raffles Dubai would be complete without a

quick drop-in at the Amrita Spa; essential

pre-wedding pampering comes by way of

the ‘Her Royal Highness’ anti-ageing facial.

Using the Caviar Signature Line it sounds

good enough to eat, and the powerful anti-

oxidant properties should leave your skin

noticeably moisturised, with just the right

level of pre-wedding glow. Now who said

Step oneBegin by choosing a church and minister

but note that some ministers will only

marry members of their own denomination.

Also take into consideration that for your

marriage to be authenticated in the UAE the

Step fourThe paperwork then needs to be processed

and authenticated by the Ministry of Justice

for Dh52. This is followed by verification by

the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Dh150.

Step fiveYou can then have your marriage legalised

for your country of citizenship by taking the

certificates to your embassy who will process

the information.

Document Required● Original passports plus certified copies need

to be provided by both parties. ● If either bride or groom is divorced decrees

need to be provided.● Generally a ‘no objection’ letter is required

by your embassy – fees vary.● The church will provide a standard form,

which needs to be completed by both parties.

church and minister must be recognised

and registered by the Dubai Courts.

Then you need to decide if you want

to marry in the church or at an

alternative venue which needs to be

supported by a wedding license. Keep

in mind that you will need to have at

least two witnesses present.

Step two Once the ceremony has been conducted the

minister will issue a marriage certificate. This

will be in English so you will need to have it

translated into Arabic by a court-approved

legal translator for a specified fee of Dh40-

Dh50 per page.

Step threeBoth the English and Arabic certificates then

need to be certified by the Notary Public

Office at the Dubai Courts for a fee of Dh110.

For every bride searching for a definitive guide to arranging a wedding in the UAE,our essential Emirates Bride planner has everything you need.

A p r i l 2 0 1 0 e m i r a t e s b r i d e 79

Step oneThe couple intending to marry, together with

the bride-to-be’s father or her legal suitor and

two other male Muslim witnesses must be

present at the Islamic marriage court for the

ceremony to take place. All witnesses must

present their passports which states they are

either UAE citizens or valid UAE residence

holders. To be married under Sharia’ah law, the

groom must be Muslim, while the bride can be

of any religion. Before the wedding, a dowry

has to be confirmed and paid to the bride. If

this does not occur, a written declaration must

be provided stating that there is no dowry.

Step two Following the ceremony a UAE marriage

license will be issued for a Dh50 fee in addition

to a Dh10 fee for identification purposes.

If the marriage is conducted outside of the

UAE and you want the agreement to be

legalised here the documentation will need

to be taken to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

of the United Arab Emirates for ratification.

If the certificate is in another language other

than Arabic it will need to be translated and

ratified by the Ministry of Justice.

Step threeFinal authentication, for non-UAE citizens,

is then required by your embassy or consulate,

which involves a varying fee.

Documents required● Original passports and photocopies need to

be presented by all involved.

● Identification papers are also required by

the bride’s father or guardian, as well as the

two witnesses.● If the bride’s father is deceased, a Sharia

Declaration of his death must be provided.

In this case she must have consent from her

brother or an uncle. If there are no male

relatives to give consent, documentation of

proof is necessary. Alternatively if the bride’s

father cannot be present, he must provide a

letter of consent, along with a certified copy of

his passport to verify his signature. ● In the case that the bride is Muslim and her

father is not, a certificate of no impediment

(no objection) is required from either the

bride’s embassy or consulate.● If a bride is widowed or divorced, documents

need to be provided as proof.● Non-UAE citizens should check with their

embassies as some will require no objection

letters from their employer’s company or

clearance from the Police Directorate stating

they have no criminal records. Fees can vary. ● Any documents necessary for the legalisation

of the wedding, which were acquired outside

of the UAE such as birth certificates, need to be

translated into Arabic by a legal translator.

Step oneFollowing the engagement, you

must organise for three witnesses

with residency visas to accompany

you to the consulate Marriage

Officer. Here you will need to

provide a Notice of Intended

Marriage form plus pay a fee

of Dh190. This entitles you to a

newspaper marriage notification

whereby the couple must then wait

30 days for any objections. After this

a date for solemnization is given

provided there were no objections.

Step twoA day before the confirmed

ceremony the couple and their

witnesses need to provide original

passports to the Marriage Officer. The

following day is the final solemniztion

of marriage where everyone invited to

the wedding can attend.

Step ThreeIf the couple requires a religious

ceremony under the Muslim or Christian

faith, they should follow the guidelines

given above for correct procedures on

ceremonies and attesting certificates.

Alternatively the Church of South India

(CSI) parish in Karama offers services for

their members and can be contacted on

(04) 3372111. The Hindu Temple in Bur

Dubai is available for Hindu ceremonies,
