Being in the fashion industry and

currently in the throes of

organising my own wedding,

there is much talk about my

dress for the big day. It is the first question

people ask me, always with a concerned

look on their face ‘so what will you wear?

You don’t have much time, are you

stressing out?’ Truth be told, I saw, paid

and bought my dress in around seven

minutes, two days after I was proposed

to. This ease came down to nothing but

sheer luck – they do say, after all, that you always find what

you’re searching for when you’re least expecting it. I came into the office to

do some research on internet shopping. I am embarrassed to say that in

this day and age, I do not shop online. It makes me nervous. I like to try

things on, feel fabrics and admittedly, check my outfit from every angle

before committing. But there I was on net-a-porter.com typing in the word

‘wedding’ and up it popped – my dress.

I emailed a picture to my mother and sister in Australia and within

moments got their stamp of approval, so I whipped out my credit card

and bought the dress. No trying on sessions, no tears, no mall trawls just

me and my PC.

It felt strangely liberating at the time, but when the dress arrived

a few days later panic had started to set in. The big white box was sat

across from my desk, waiting patiently for me to take it home and try

on. But as it sat there looking all pretty, one thought kept niggling…

What had I done? I don’t even buy T-shirts online let alone my wedding

dress – what possessed me?! In a dismal attempt to try it on at home (have

you ever done up a corset sans assistance?) I put in an emergency call to my

friend and designer Rami Al Ali. The lovely Rami is making my (other)

dress for the church ceremony, so with white box in hand, I hotfooted it to

his atelier faster than you can say Vivienne Westwood.

With some much-needed extra hands to clip, fasten, zip and fit the dress,

finally there I was – standing in tiered taffeta, which fitted (just) to absolute

perfection. What a strange feeling indeed. As I posed this way and that in

front of the mirror, I was transported back to when I bought the dress. It

had been listed under the heading of ‘fashion forward bride’ and at that

moment, stood in front of the mirror, that’s exactly how I felt.

I had heard so many horror stories about brides not being able to choose

their gown through having too many or not enough options, or having to

travel abroad to find the dream dress, but for me, buying my wedding dress

has been the least stressful part of the entire wedding process so far. The

moral of this story, and my few words of advice, is do what feels right when

it comes to your wedding – whatever the task. We all spend so long

worrying, stressing and fretting about what we should or shouldn’t wear

that we lose half the fun in the process. Focus less on the ‘what ifs’ and more

on the here and now.

On that note, it’s back to my PC for me… I still have my veil to

buy after all.

Carolina Herrera’s S/S11 show saw the emergence

and an array of embroidered, monochrome and

ivory arm-covered creations were displayed; from

directional single bell-sleeves, to off-the-shoulder

organza and cute banded capped shoulders.

your wedding day is truly memorable.

Experts will be able to offer you a bespoke

measurement, give you helpful hints on what

to opt for (the plethora of styles and variations

often requires a guiding hand to narrow down

the options) and even soothe fraught nerves.

Why not make a party out of the whole

experience? Brides-to-be can book a private

two-hour bridal fitting in the sumptuous

Agent Provocateur boutique and bring up to

You could even make the fitting the first stop

● Comfort is key when you choose your bra – the most supportive part of your underwear. Make sure you get properly measured before purchasing as most women wear the wrong size. ● Make sure you try your underwear and dress on well in advance; it’s no use having a beautiful dress if your lingerie is peeking out at the top, or seams and bulges are on show.● If you need to hold in the bumps, then ensure you select the right slimming undergarments. Spandex and lycra keep the body stiffer and in place. ● Make sure you pick hosiery that fits well so it doesn’t show through your dress. ● Lace, bows and ribbons can be stunning but make sure they fit with your dress. It’s not a good look to have your underwear interfering with your outerwear – sometimes simple and seamless works best.● Buy lingerie that fits with your personality; be it risqué, flirty, sensual or angelic.

WRITTEN BY SOPHIE JONES-COOPER

As romantic a time as it is, the idea of planning a wedding can be a little overwhelming, with two little words, table plan, often enough to send even the most organised of brides into a terrified tail-spin. Lost in a sea of chiffon and tulle, even the smallest of touches can serve up the

biggest of challenges and there is only so much ‘advice’ you can take from ‘helpful’ in-laws before Bridezilla appears. The key to a successful pre-wedding build-up is cool, calm organisation. Whether you are newly engaged or a bride-to-be on a mission of military precision planning, The Bride Show 2011 has all you need to help you get hitched without a hitch.

SAY YES TO THE DRESSLET YOUR INNER FASHIONISTA FLOURISH AND TAKE YOUR FRONT ROW SEAT AT THE BRIDAL RUNWAY SHOWS FROM TOP INTERNATIONAL AND LOCAL DESIGNERS

gowns. Having dressed celebrities including Nancy Arjam, Najwa Karam and Majida El Roumi, Tony is well-known for his elegant and crystal-studded creations. And for a little hint of what you can expect from his 2011 collection, think a palette of peach and grey and, of course, a scattering of his ubiquitous Swarovski crystals. Don’t miss his show on Wednesday, February 2, at 6pm.

ARUSHIIf you are looking to bring a little high society to your wedding affair and dress as the royals do, then look to the prestigious Middle Eastern bridal masters House of Arushi. Experts from L’Oréal Professional and M.A.C Cosmetics will also be on hand to offer you beauty and make-up tips, tricks and the latest trends, to help you tick at least one task off your to-do list.

ichard and Poppy, 32 and 28 respectively, were friends for nearly

10 years before they started dating. Having met through mutual

friends, it wasn’t until a rather boring party that they realised they

had so much in common. They chatted all night and by the end, Poppy had

agreed to a dinner date with Richard the following weekend. Nearly a year to

the day of their first date, Richard surprised Poppy with a trip to Paris and

proposed. With advice to keep the proposal low-key from Poppy’s mother,

Richard got down on one knee in the hotel bedroom with an amazing two-

tier Tiffany’s inspired ring handmade by Vikram at UMI Pearls, Dubai. For

her hen do, Poppy had dinner with some close girlfriends in the UK, while

Richard’s stag was spent in Bournemouth with the boys. As Poppy’s mother

had grown up in Italy, she had always wanted to get married there. Having

found the perfect villa in Lucca, disaster struck when four months later the

villa was unavailable. Poppy’s mother came to the rescue, flying to Italy to

find two new planners in Carolina and Fulvia, who found the couple a

new dream wedding location at the beautiful Castello di Montegufoni.

POPPY’S WEDDING TIPS: ● Don’t panic. Even two weeks before the wedding things were still coming together, but just remember everything will get done. The more relaxed you are the more you can enjoy your day. ● The help of our friends was invaluable. We designated jobs to each bridesmaid/usher so that on the day we could get ready in peace. ● Be honest. It’s quite easy to feel bullied by wedding planner/photographers/family but if you stick firmly to what you want you will be grateful on the day.

LITTLE BLACK BRIDAL BOOK

THE WEDDING

With Italy being the perfect destination, both Poppy and Richard knew the importance of having the best wedding planners, and having people able to stay on site. The location they found literally took their breath away.

Reception venue: As the chapel was too small, we got married in the largest room of the castle. A wonderfully bright, opulently decorated hall – truly stunning.

Theme: As the location was so rustic, our theme was classic with a vintage twist to reflect this. We used antique plates, table settings, furniture and rustic coloured flowers.

Guests: 120, with friends coming from mainly Dubai and England.

Dress: I wanted something unique that I could wear again. My friend spotted the perfect dress for me in S*uce, Dubai Mall – a 30’s vibe, with tiered capped sleeves, small peplum at the waist and fitted to the floor. It’s my first long dress and I felt a million dollars.

Shoes: Blush pink satin Louboutin’s with a small bow at the toes. I bought them from the Christian Louboutin boutique with my mother on a trip to the UK. I knew I had to have them!

Hat: I didn’t want anything typically bridal, I had a 50’s style cream pill box hat with a large pink and cream taffeta flower on the back and short peach veil with cream pearls.

Rings: Vikram from UMI Pearls designed mine – a full diamond band to fit around my engagement ring.

Bridesmaids: My four closest friends wore dresses from Reiss. It was a group effort with me choosing the dresses, one friend finding the shoes and another the hair-pieces. My friend Antonia also made each of them a pearl necklace from her collection. ([email protected])

Cake: A traditional one-layer millefoglie cake surrounded by fruit.

Flowers: Amnesia roses mixed with Old Dutch roses for my bouquet and then Old Dutch roses with cream roses for the tables.

Caterers: Guiseppe, the brilliant on-site chef. He had us sold from our first tasting evening with him! We had two pasta dishes to start, followed by beef with rosemary potatoes and green beans. Dessert was our wedding cake with dessert wine.

Unique touches: As is traditional in Italian weddings, a bag containing five sugared almonds was put on each person’s table setting. Also, as our favourite smell is lavender, a little sprig of lavender from my aunt’s field was placed on each setting.

Honeymoon: We chose South Africa and spent a week travelling the Garden Route followed by a week on safari in Addo. ■

LAURA’S WEDDING TIPS

Laura Perez and Gonzalo Rodriguez met two years ago, at a friend’s wedding in India – their love story is a unique one. Laura, who hails from Mexico, was living there at the time,

whilst Gonzalo was based in his home country of Spain. A friendship blossomed at the wedding, and as luck would have it Gonzalo was due to move to Mexico a month later, having accepted a job in a hotel. Mexico is a huge country, but fate played its card again, as Gonzalo moved to Cancun where Laura was living. It was evident from the beginning that destiny believed these two belonged together. The couple moved to Dubai in the summer of 2009, and after a beautiful proposal at Qasr Al Sarab, they planned the wedding of their dreams in just four months, and 10,000 miles from home. A wedding that married two cultures, with traditions taken from both Mexico and Spain, the stunning day followed a beautiful story that has the power to make people believe in destiny.

A HOLLYWOOD FABULOUS SMILETREATMENTInvisalign braces and laser whitening RESULTSThere’s nothing that makes a lady look less than love-struck than a reluctance to break into a wide grin (think Victoria Beckham and her notoriously tight-lipped smile). If your teeth are a secret bugbear, then look to sort your smile before you say ‘I do’. This does require rather more time, and potentially pain, than some big-day beauty fixes but those ecstatic grins pasted all over the wedding album will be well worth the effort. Invisalign takes the good and ditches the bad from those train-track braces that haunted our teenage years: read straight teeth without the aesthetic nightmare of metal-mouth. Custom-made transparent

‘gumshield’ retainers are worn on a daily basis to realign teeth. As they are removable, teeth can be cleaned properly and with no metal involved gums and cheeks shouldn’t be irritated. Finish off by ensuring your smile is pearly white. Laser whitening (again ‘no pain, no gain’) in-dentist treatments are much more effective than any at-home options. Rest assured that if you do experience pain while in the dentist’s chair, it should disappear after 24 hours. COSTPrice on applicationRECOVERY TIMEOn average, treatment with Invisalign can take about a year, depending on the individual. Laser whitening is more instant, but if you have a low pain threshold you may wish to spread the treatment over several sessions, allowing a week or two between each. You’ll need

to avoid coloured foods and drinks post-whitening so finish at least a week before the wedding, unless you’re happy eating plain boiled rice washed down with water at the rehearsal dinner… CONTACTwww.nicolasandasp.com

IRON OUT THOSE CREASESTREATMENTBotoxRESULTSDeep lines are caused by repeated use of muscles in a particular manner – they form when we frown, squint or smile. Botulimum toxin is a celeb lauded preventative treatment, which helps reduce the appearance of lines by temporarily putting the muscles to sleep. Overuse, as well-documented by over-zealous beauty addicts, results in an inability to express

emotion on the face. But millions of people use Botox injections in moderation to get rid of frown lines, and it is a popular pre-wedding choice for those wanting to banish facial flaws from their photos. If wedding day nerves could be an issue and deodorants just won’t cut the mustard, Botox is also an interesting alternative treatment. Injections are inserted into the armpit to temporarily block the chemical transmitters that cause sweating, which means no embarrassing underarm mishaps to mar your big day. COSTOne area (eg. forehead) Dhs1,400 Two areas (eg. forehead and rest of face) Dhs1,800 RECOVERY TIMENeedle marks should go after half an hour and bruising should fade after two or three days. However, it takes three to five days to take effect so Dr Maurizio Viel recommends treatment a minimum of two weeks before the big day, to allow for touch-ups if required. Results should last up to three months. CONTACTwww.lcas.ae

CLEAR AND CLEAN COMPLEXIONTREATMENTFacial peelRESULTSRemember the episode where Sex and the City’s Samantha has a peel and ends up attending a cocktail party with a rouged-raw face hidden under an oversized floppy hat? Chemical peels have come a long way since those days and far gentler options are available. Based on the simple premise that blushing brides look best with blemish free skin, Biolite recommends the Spot Peel to brighten skin, tighten pores and treat spot damage. This is a medical grade peel – so

stronger than those available over the counter or from beauty therapists – and is used in combination with at-home skincare. Treatment isn’t restricted to the face – something to consider if your dream gown entails exposure and you want to flaunt a flawless décolletage. COSTDhs2,200 RECOVERY TIMEAllow at least a week for skin to recover.CONTACTwww.biolitedubai.com

FAREWELL TO FINE LINES TREATMENT Hyaluronic acid fillersRESULTSWhile the idea of injecting acid into your skin to smooth out wrinkles may sound a little drastic, this substance is actually already naturally present in the body. Hyaluronic acid is injected as a filler into the skin and by boosting collagen production and hydration it reduces the presence of wrinkles. As a biodegradable product, the body breaks it down over time: hence the relatively short-lived results. There are a number of different forms of hyaluronic acid filler with differing compositions under different product names. Each is best suited to a specific area of the face: Restylane is used for finer lines under the eyes and around the lips; Perlane is preferred for smile and expression lines around the mouth; Restylane Lip rather obviously is for lips; and Sub Q is used to boost cheeks.COSTDhs2,000 per vial of Restylane or PerlaneDhs2,500 – Dhs2,800 per vial of Restylane Lip

RECOVERY TIMEAllow two or three days for recovery, but this does depend on the location: cheeks don’t bruise at all, but lips and under-eyes can. Dr Khan at Aesthetics International says results can last up to four to six months, so this should see you through even the longest honeymoon. CONTACT www.aesthetics.ae

VEIN-FREE VISAGE TREATMENTAdvanced Fluorescence Technology LaserRESULTSIf visible veins, burst capillaries or superficial but ever-present redness lead you to load on the concealer, then think about dealing the problem a permanent blow. Intense pulsed laser light breaks down the veins by producing a rapid rise in temperature, resulting in contraction and scarring of the vein – if the vessel is permanently damaged it should never return. Often a couple of treatments are needed, though it simply depends on the size and number of veins. Rosacea usually requires a number of sessions whereas individual veins that are easily visible to the naked eye will often respond faster. Pain levels are a little like an elastic band snap, and unfortunately, topical anesthetics aren’t recommended as they constrict the blood vessels and reduce the treatment’s effectiveness: just grin and bear it.COSTTreatment starts at Dhs500 RECOVERY TIMERedness could last from as little as one hour up to a couple of days. Recovery tends to be fast but will depend on skin type and the size of the area treated.CONTACTwww.dermalaseclinic.com ■

section. Brush hair back into a ponytail and tie. Use your thumb to swirl hair around in one direction and secure with long scaffolding grips. Finish with a mist of hairspray.”

HAIR GURU FRÉDÉRIC FEKKAI “Use hot rollers to create romantic, cascading curls. First apply a cream to hydrate and protect hair from the heat. Let hair dry naturally, then divide into sections. Leave a strand of hair loose around the face. Back comb the roots of the hair to create this messy volume and secure the hair at the nape of the neck in a bun with an invisible band and some hair grips. Take the loose strand of hair at the front and curl with a hair tong. Now spritz with hairspray to hold the look in place.”

TOP STYLIST JENNA BARRON AT TED MORGAN TELLS “Run volumising mousse through dry hair so the hair will have some hold to it. Divide the hair into two equal sections from ear to ear and pin the front section up to keep it out of the way. Now create a ponytail with the remaining hair and pull it through the centre of your donut. Create a bun by pinning the ponytail hair to the donut. Then backcomb the loose top section creating as much volume as possible. Pin it over the bun as high as you can, ensuring the hair is smooth by using a comb, then spritz with a strong hold hairspray.”

CELEBRITY STYLIST WARREN HOLMES AT NICKY CLARKE “Gently tease hair at the roots with a comb and hairspray each section. Pull hair back into a high ponytail and tie using a piece of elastic. Take a small section of hair from the ponytail and run over it with serum, then wrap this

section around the hair band several times. Secure the end of the hair with a grip underneath the ponytail and mist over with hairspray.”

PARIS CAPE TOWN

LOS ANGELES

The quintessential romantic city of culture, couture and culinary excellence deserves its reputation, with its cosy cafés, busy boulevards, Michelin-starred dining, stunning Seine and designer boutiques. Haute hotels prominently perched centreville include the Four Seasons George V, or the Hotel de Crillon, whilst fashionistas favour boutique-chic Hotel Costes or Pershing Hall.

Gastronomes head to Alain Ducasse Au Plaza Athénée, the jaw-dropping Cristal Room Baccarat or Pierre Gagnaire, but for more boutique brasserie-style dining, saunter to Bastille stalwart Chez Paul or the supremely tongue-in-cheek Derriere. Let your hair down post-wedding at the Black Calvados Hotel Costes, or VIP Club.

The Pompidou Centre and Louvre are must-sees, as are the Catacombs. Château de Versailles is the textbook perfect day trip, and Rue St Honore a shopper’s dream. Paris is magical in spring, or join the Bastille Day fanfare on July 14. www.parisinfo.com

This sun-filled city is home to boutique shopping, elegant Cape Dutch buildings, pristine beaches, the iconic Table Mountain and, for the wine-lover in you, Stellenbosch. As a sought-after city break, Cape Town is as cosmopolitan as it is cool. For scenic sightseeing, head to Lion’s Head, Devil’s Peak or the Cape of Good Hope. For bedding down, the grand Cape Grace, Mount Nelson, the African-contemporary One&Only Cape Town or honeymooner’s favourite Ellerman House hotels are all worthy luxury contenders.

The Victoria & Albert Waterfront has a plethora of people-watching bars and eateries, or book ahead at Colombe (possibly the best restaurant in town), Tokara (with amazing views of Table Mountain) or buzzy Mano’s. Robben Island, notorious for the imprisonment of Nelson Mandela, is a sobering but essential stop. Beautiful people pose at Clifton and Fourth beaches, relax at Camp’s Bay and shop at the Constantina Village or V&A Waterfront malls.

Gales hit from September to November and tourists descend from December to January, so for better pricing and weather, avoid these months. www.capetown.travel

Have your silver screen moment at The Beverly Wilshire, the rock‘n’roll Chateau Marmont, slick Mondrian or the ‘Pink Palace’ Beverly Hills Hotel, while flashing the cash on the big brands on Rodeo Drive. Starlets ignore diets at Madeo, Matsuhisa and Mr Chow restaurants, while celeb-spotters find a table on the outdoor terrace at The Ivy. Stroll down the Hollywood Walk of Fame, explore Santa Monica’s beachside shops and cafés and then head to the Getty Museum for a culture fix.

Ashton Kutchner’s Geisha House is the bar to pop to, Crimson to bop in and The Terrace at Sunset Tower Hotel is perfect for posing. The Frank Gehry-designed Walt Disney Music Hall should be on your tour-map, then hop over the road to the Museum of Contemporary Art. Pampering is top of the agenda on a honeymoon, so head to Halle Berry’s favourite Kinara Spa. For a taste of the real Hollywood dream, book the Warner Bros VIP Tour for a look behind-the-scenes on their movie sets. October is warm and relatively tourist free, but spring and autumn are wonderful weather-wise. discoverlosangeles.com

Whether you opt for a couple’s cooking course at the Istanbul Culinary Institute, brunch along the Bosphorus at House Café in Ortakoy, lounge by the pool at the Ciagran Palace, throw a dinner party at the view-tastic 360 or party it up at super club Zeina or icy-cool Angelique, you’ll be spoilt for choice.

Get lost in the maze-like Grand Bazaar hunting for quirky knick-knacks and luxurious leather, be inspired by the beauty of the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, Yerebatan Cistern and Topkapi Palace, pausing for a refreshing cup of tea in the serene Four Seasons Sultanahmet courtyard. www.istanbulcityguide.com

Tuscany’s romantic credentials are legendary, while its capital Florence is a fairy-tale destination; from superb shopping and food, to Renaissance art and crisp Chianti. The Olga Polizzi-designed Hotel Savoy is the stylish place to rest, or be equally spoilt at the Ferragamo-owned Hotel Lungarno, or the exclusive Helvetia & Bristol. The hot chocolate at Robiglio is famous but for designer dining, head to the Michelin-starred Enoteca Pinchiorri or L’Incontro.

The 14th century Ponte Vecchio bridge is a romantic hotspot, as are the Boboli gardens, Uffizi Gallery and Palazzos Medici Riccardi, Pitti and Strozzi. Via Tournabuoni is where you’ll find a host of designers for that pre-requisite shopping spree. Spring and autumn are warm, while summer’s too hot and winter unfavourably cold. www.justitaly.org/italy/florence

Ponte Vecchio is perfect for a romantic

camera-click moment

For an early 2011 honeymoon, make your way to Phnom Penh in Siem Reap for some sleepy rural charm. Siem Reap’s lure is partly down to the mystical region of Angkor next door, but its surprising selection of chic hotels, restaurants and the famous Bodia Spa make it a perfect honeymoon option.

Pick up a bargain at the markets, then bed down at the opulent Raffles Grand Hotel D’Angkor, the excellent Sofitel Royal Angkor or the boutique-like La Residence D’Angkor.

For traditional spicy fare dine at Chivit Thai, whilst art-deco interior aficionados wax lyrical about the French-inspired gourmet fusion cuisine at Le Malraux. The magnificent ruins of the Khmer empire at Angkor are a sight for sore eyes. But Bayon, Angkor Thom and Ta Prohm (enveloped by jungle) are awe-inspiring. The Prek Toal bird sanctuary and floating villages of Tonle Sap Lake are also scenic essentials. www.aboutasiatravel.com/cambodia

WILD OUTDOORS

ALASKA

ZAMBIASafari seekers should don their taupes and book a flight to Zambia anytime between April and October to explore the river plains of the mighty Zambezi River, or stand atop the thundering Victoria Falls.

Puku Ridge is where you should set up camp, amidst the national park’s wilderness to guarantee wildlife sightings, the elevated Shumba Camp (watch out for tree-climbing lions) or Ntemwa. Water-enthusiasts should check into the Lunga River Camp on the banks of the Zambezi to sup sundowners while spotting crocs, hippos and elephants.

Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park is where you’ll spend most of your time; either traversing the Victoria Falls on its famous footbridge or upstream in the game park where you can get up close and personal with antelopes, zebras, elephants and buffalos. Aside from safari, adventurous couples can crank up the fear factor by abseiling, white-water rafting, or the ultimate in thrill-seeking, bungee jumping. www.zambiatourism.com

Pack your Uggs, thermals, winter woollens and cashmere mitts and experience the Arctic Circle’s icy beauty. The seriously active can indulge in everything from hiking, husky sledging and skiing against a dramatic backdrop of soaring mountains and mile-long glaciers. Lucky ones might catch a glimpse of the magical Northern Lights whilst wrapped up warm at night on board a 100-year-old schooner.

Those looking for a little less northern exposure can opt for a more leisurely and luxurious Alaskan cruise; you’ll still get the snowy vistas and glacier-capped mountains and maybe spot grizzly bears, humpback whales, seals and frolicking dolphins.

Winter scenery is best from December to March, but for longer daylight hours and greener nature, opt for May to September. www.travelalaska.com

GALAPAGOS ISLANDS

Laying 960 km off the coast of Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands are ideal for adventurous honeymooners looking to experience nature.

The wildlife on the 15 islands (only four are inhabited) is astonishing with hundreds of iguanas, water teeming with slippery sea lions, pelicans at San Cristobal Harbour and ancient tortoises at the Charles Darwin Research Centre on Santa Cruz. On Isla Espanola you can witness the mating rituals of hundreds of massive albatross. Island-hopping from the comfort of a yacht is the only way to explore. But the Royal Palm Hotel is your gateway to luxury, especially if you check into the luxurious and exclusive oceanfront residence Escalesia. Visit between December and June to ensure perfect climes.www.theultimatetravelcompany.co.uk

KUDA HURAAAs soon as you land at the Maldives’ capital Malé, you will be whisked by private speedboat to Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa. Discover the charm of a Maldivian village on a private coral island amidst the tranquil turquoise sea, where palm-thatched pavilions and bungalows line the white sands. Just steps away from the ocean lies your Beach Pavillion accommodation, complete with raised floors to maximise the sea view and a spacious deck, private plunge pool and daybeds.

You can spend your days languishing by your private pool, or thrill-seekers can engage in exhilarating activities like snorkelling in the kaleidoscopic reefs or surfing the crystal waters, while a short boat ride takes you to renowned dive sites, private island retreats and dolphin playgrounds.

Freshen up under your outdoor shower in the confines of the pavilion’s exotic walled-garden, before pleasing your palate at one of the resort’s six restaurants, flaunting fare from the Asia, Italy, India and the Maldives. But if romance is high on your agenda, opt for dining in the privacy of your room with a sunrise champagne breakfast, romantic star-lit dinner or beach barbecue.

The Island Spa – the only spa in the Maldives with is own private isle – is just a minute’s sail from the resort. The instant you climb into the dhoni (Maldivian boat) to make your way, to your 60-minute massage, you’ll feel any post-wedding stresses and strains ebb away.

LANDAA GIRAAVARU After two magical nights at Kuda Huraa, it’s time to move from one luxurious scene to another – the stunning oasis of Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru. Set in the untouched Baa Atoll, the seaplane ride and the scenic sights give you a taste of the privacy and pampering that awaits.

As you settle into your traditional thatched beach bungalow on the powdered sands, take a minute to drink in the resort’s luxury. By day you can relax in the shade of your foliage-filled garden, swim away any post-wedding stresses in your private pool or recline and unwind on your day bed.

This verdant, beach-fringed coral island offers sophisticated pleasures on land and water. Splash, sail or dive in the jewel-like Indian Ocean or in the pristine lagoon, then immerse yourselves in the healing heart of The Spa and Ayurvedic Retreat. The resort

bosats four restaurants and three bars – allowing you to indulge in Lebanese or Moroccan grills, savour Italian delights or feast on the fresh catch of the day, or opt for a romantic beach picnic or sandbank dinner instead.

STEP ONEThe couple intending to marry, together with the

bride-to-be’s father or her legal suitor and two

other male Muslim witnesses must be present

at the Islamic marriage court for the ceremony

to take place. All witnesses must present their

passports which states they are either UAE citizens

or valid UAE residence holders. To be married

under Sharia’ah law, the groom must be Muslim,

while the bride can be of any religion. Before

the wedding, a dowry has to be confirmed and

paid to the bride. If this does not occur, a written

declaration must be provided stating that there is

no dowry.

STEP TWO Following the ceremony a UAE marriage

license will be issued for a Dh50 fee in

addition to a Dh10 fee for identification

purposes. If the marriage is conducted outside

of the UAE and you want the agreement to be

legalised here the documentation will need

to be taken to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

of the United Arab Emirates for ratification.

If the certificate is in another language other

than Arabic it will need to be translated and

ratified by the Ministry of Justice.

STEP THREEFinal authentication, for non-UAE citizens,

is then required by your embassy or consulate,

which involves a varying fee.

DOCUMENTS REQUIRED● Original passports and photocopies need to be

presented by all involved. ● Identification papers are also required by the

bride’s father or guardian, as well as the two

witnesses.● If the bride’s father is deceased, a Sharia

Declaration of his death must be provided. In this

case she must have consent from her brother or an

uncle. If there are no male relatives to give consent,

documentation of proof is necessary. Alternatively

if the bride’s father cannot be present, he must

provide a letter of consent, along with a certified

copy of his passport to verify his signature. ● In the case that the bride is Muslim and her

father is not, a certificate of no impediment (no

objection) is required from either the bride’s

embassy or consulate.

STEP ONEFollowing the engagement, you must

organise for three witnesses with

residency visas to accompany you to

the consulate Marriage Officer. Here

you will need to provide a Notice

of Intended Marriage form plus pay

a fee of Dh190. This entitles you to

a newspaper marriage notification

whereby the couple must then wait

30 days for any objections. After this

a date for solemnization is given

provided there were no objections.

STEP TWOA day before the confirmed ceremony

the couple and their witnesses need

to provide original passports to the

Marriage Officer. The following day

is the final solemniztion of marriage

where everyone invited to

the wedding can attend.

STEP THREEIf the couple requires a religious

ceremony under the Muslim or

Christian faith, they should follow

the guidelines given above for correct

procedures on ceremonies and

attesting certificates. Alternatively the

Church of South India (CSI) parish

in Karama offers services for their

members and can be contacted on

STEP ONEBegin by choosing a church and

minister but note that some ministers

will only marry members of their own

denomination. Also take into consideration

that for your marriage to be authenticated

in the UAE the church and minister

must be recognised and registered by the

Dubai Courts. Then you need to decide

if you want to marry in the church or at

an alternative venue which needs to be

supported by a wedding license. Keep in

mind that you will need to have at least two

witnesses present.

STEP TWO Once the ceremony has been conducted the

minister will issue a marriage certificate. This

will be in English so you will need to have it

translated into Arabic by a court-approved

legal translator for a specified fee of Dh40-

Dh50 per page.

STEP THREEBoth the English and Arabic certificates

then need to be certified by the Notary

Public Office at the Dubai Courts for a fee

of Dh110.

STEP FOURThe paperwork then needs to be processed

and authenticated by the Ministry of Justice

for Dh52. This is followed by verification by

the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Dh150.

for your country of citizenship by taking

the certificates to your embassy who will

process the information.

HINDU: The term ‘tying the

knot’ comes from a Hindu practice

in which the couple’s hands are

bound together as an emblematic

meeting of the two hearts and

souls.

MIDDLE EASTERN: Brides will

often have a ‘henna’ party pre-

wedding, where her female friends

and family members gather and

intricate henna patterns are

painted onto the bride’s hands to

protect her from evil spirits.

POLISH: Traditionally, after the

bride is married her veil will be

removed (by her mother) and an

apron tied around her waist to

sybmolise her transformation

between maidenhood and

married life.

ROMAN: Veils were first worn by

Roman brides as a disguise to fool

jealous evil spirits who wished the

bride harm on her wedding day.

Bridesmaids played a role too, and

would dress as elaborately as the

bride to help ward off evil.

CELTIC: Wedding rings

were originally made from

pieces of the bride and

groom’s hair, which were

weaved together as a

symbol of their unity.

CHINESE: The bride

usually wears red, which is

a symbol of good luck. On

the morning of her

wedding, the bride will be

bathed in water with

pomelo to cleanse her of

evil auras and influences.

DUTCH: The tradition of

the bridal shower

reportedly originated in

Holland, when, if the father

of the bride disapproved of

her choice of husband and

refused to pay a dowry, the

bride’s village would

‘shower’ her with gifts to

help set up a family home.

ENGLISH: The tradition

of a white wedding dress is

commonly attributed to

Queen Victoria who wore a

white lace gown for her wedding to Prince Albert in 1840. Prior to

that, silver was the choice for royal brides. Queen Victoria is also

thought to have forbidden her children to marry in the month of

May, believing it to be unlucky.

GERMAN: In Germany, brides are encouraged to carry salt and

bread to ensure good harvests, whereas the groom should carry

grain to attract wealth and fortune.

GREEK: The end of a wedding ceremony is always signified by the

offering of honey and walnuts on a silver spoon. As the walnut

breaks into four it symbolises the bride, groom and two sets of

parents. The bride should also tuck a small sugar cube into her

glove to sweeten the marital union.

RUSSIAN: It is said that whichever of the bridal couple steps foot on

the registry carpet first, will be the dominant one in the marriage and

head of the family.

SOUTH AFRICAN: To ensure that the light of love is passed to the new

couple, the parents of both the bride and groom would carry a torch lit

from their own hearth to light the fire in the home of the newlyweds.

SWEDISH: The bride is given a silver coin from her father and a gold

coin from her mother to ensure that she and her husband will never go

without money.

WELSH: Silver coins are inserted into the popped champagne corks

and presented to the newlyweds for luck. ■
