“I did the application for my twograndchildren in 2010. Both of themlost theirmother in2008and I’m tak-ing care of them. I applied in 2010hoping that my application would beapproved but it has never happened.

Todd said that the situation is re-grettableandtheyagreethatnoclientshould have to wait so long for theprocessing of an application.

“However, the Child Welfare is a

non-profit non-governmental organ-isation reliant on donor funding.

“Due to insufficient funding by thestate for statutory services as man-datedbylawintermsoftheChildren’sAct 28/2005 services are regretfullycompromised.

“All clients on application for kin-ship careareadvised that theyunfor-tunately can expect a two-year back-log for processing. Jozana was ad-vised of this when she applied inMarch 2010.

(a category for larger schools) of Col-lect-a-Can’s national schools compe-tition.

Schools that register for the Col-lect-a-CanNationalSchoolsCompeti-tion are encouraged to get pupils in-volved by collecting as many cans aspossible to win great prizes. Prizesareawardedtotheschoolsthatcollectthemostcanspermonthaswellasthemost cans per year.

The current project organiser atMthethomushaSchool,BonganiMal-inga is excited about this year’s com-petition.

“Wehavebeenparticipatingsince2005. It is a great way to earnmoneyand it helps us meet the needs of ourschool,” says Malinga.

Malingabelievesthatthecompeti-tion is an opportunity for all schoolsto teach their children about the im-portanceof recyclingand italsohelpsthe schools financially by the prizeson offer.

“Should Mthethomusha winagain, a staff meeting will be held todetermine what the school needs. They have already repaired theschool hall with their previous win-nings.

“Entering the Collect-a-Can com-petition can prove very rewarding asit is not without its challenges. It in-volves a lot of hard work and organi-sation.

“Our children are most definitelythe largest contributors. We ask par-ents for help at meetings with themand we try to involve the communityto collect cans for us,” Malinga ex-plains.

The school rewards pupils by giv-ing out prizes everymonth. Competi-tionsareheldfortheclassthatcollectsthemostcansandalso for individualswho bring in the most cans.

“Itisagreatmotivatorandnotonlythat, the children learn an invaluablelesson in the process. To protect the

environment and help keep it clean,”explains Malinga.

Theschool isdetermined tocollecteven more cans this year.

“We want to try and get the chil-dren more involved. They are ourlargest contributors and if they getmore excited about what we are do-ing, thatwillbegreat,”continuesMal-inga.

The school would like to encour-age other schools, especially thoseclose to them, to enter the Collect-a-Cannationalschoolscompetitionthisyear, to contribute what they can tohelp protect the environment – everyrecycled can counts.

RidiculedZuma.WorshippedMandela andrespectedMbeki

A FEW days ago the ANC in KZN hada march in eThekwini where it protested against the booing of its leader,President Jacob Zuma.

Zuma was booed first during thecommemoration of the late NelsonMandela and again at the recent Bafana Bafana and Brazil soccer game inSoweto.

The booing of a head of state, forwhatever reason, is something that, even if one finds distasteful, can do verylittle about as it is difficult to argue withthe masses. This is because even whenthe masses are wrong in their understanding of an issue, they are right asthey are the ones who vote politiciansin and out of power.

One of the most confusing thingsthat has happened within the ANC hasbeenitsinabilitytoprotectitspresidentfrom ridicule, insults and mischief, especially from the media. As an outsider, though a keen observer and commentator of the goings on in this country,

it is simply a mystery, how the membersand supporters of the ANC have allowed every Tom, Dick or Harry to hurlabuse at Zuma, willynilly, withoutmounting some kind of defence. It is almost as if they told themselves that foras long as it is not their names in themud, it was of no consequence.

I vividly remember that soon afterhis election, Zuma urged his supportersto watch what the media said abouthim and the ANC. He specifically pointed out opinion and feature writers asthe ones to especially pay attention to.To date, those who care to do so willfind that only ona few occasionshas anyone bordered to defendwhat is saidabout the ANCpresident in themedia.

I remember afew peoplepleaded with cartoonist Zapiro todesist from continuing to drawZuma’s head with a shower on top, asthis was no longer relevant since thecourts had found him not guilty. In factit was childish to continue to caricatureZuma in that way. I have yet to see a“right to reply” in any newspaper, responding to an article whose only aimwas to embarrass him. While the reaction and attempt at protecting Zumaduring that furore on the drawing of his

exposed manhood was better thannothing, it did not go far enough. He didnot come out of smelling of roses.

It would seem that the problemswith the ANC president seems to comemore from internal rather than externalsources, as various factions, internally, appeared to want to upstage one another. This is most unfortunate for theparty itself as well as for most of usblack people.

Without undermining the roles thatthe two other liberation movements, the Black Consciousness Movement(BCM) and Pan Africanists Congress

(PAC) of Azania, haveplayed in theliberation ofthis country, itis the ANCwhich eventually forced thethen illegitimate white minority regimeto negotiate itspower away, sothat today, we

have a constitutional democracy. If those negotiations had not taken

place, it is almost certain that many ofus blacks would still be treated as unwanted stepchildren in a country whichis our natural backyard. Without beinglyrical about the ANC, it is most probably fair to say it is one single entity thatwe blacks, (unless you include the minibus taxi industry), can claim to own.

Now I have no idea whether whenthe KZN ANC marched in Durban theyhad that in mind, but freedomlovingSouth African would do well to takenote of it.

The attack on Zuma as party president cannot be divorced from the attack on the ANC and those of its members and supporters who stand on thesideline while the name of their leaderis being dragged through the mud andthe movement is being destroyed, aremaking a grave mistake.

Looked at it historically, it is in theinterest of mainly the black majority, that if the day comes when the ANC isdestroyed, that day be prolonged for aslong as humanly possible.

ANC members and supportersshould be awake to the fact that thosewho ridicule Zuma, as ANC presidentare, at once and the same time, ridiculing Mandela, Mbeki, Luthuli, Dube aswell as every single other ANC leader, past and present, despite their claimsthat they worship Madiba and respectMbeki.

To say this is not the same as sayingthat the ANC and its leadership shouldnot be criticised. It’s just that thereclearly is something seriously wrong ina setup where, just 20 years into democracy, people seem to reserve themost vile and destructive criticism fora movement (and its leaders) whichsacrificed much to see that they todaylive as a free people.

That’s all I am saying.

“Wetriedtodothat, butwecouldn’tmakemore than this one point. It wasa good game, with both sides playingveryorganisedandwithagoodtacticalapproach, at a high level.

“They are a good team and I wassurprised by them because this is not

the Black Aces that I know from threeor four years ago.

“Theplayershave touse a lot of en-ergy to run forward and back, and it isnot easy for them because they areemptyandtootired–theyhavealreadyplayed 36 games this season and a lotof our main players are not here, wehave a lot of injured players.

Hope forBanyana toadvance undernew coach

THEnewlyappointedBanyanaBanya-na head coach and Netherlands born,Vera Pauw, is the best thing that hashappened to South African women’ssoccer.

This isaccording toSafa’s technicaldirector and former senior women’steam manager Fran Hilton-Smith.

SmithsaysPauw’scontributionandpresence in the country will take SAwomen’s soccer to dizzy heights.

ShesaysbesidesPauw’s“colourful”and “heavy” CV, her internationalwork experience in women’s soccer isgoodnewsandisaplus for thecountry.

“Pauw is not only good news to ourwomen’s soccer but she’s the best inthis position. Besides her qualifica-tions in coaching, she’s got everythingwe needed for the women’s headcoach.

“Our women’s soccer team battledfor a very long time to get a person likethis andwe are all excited to have her. She’s a hard worker and she believesin team work. She has successfullyworked in a couple of countries.

“We wanted to bring in someonewith international experience at thehighest level who can help take theteam one step further and qualify forthe World Cup,” said Hilton-Smith.

Pauw will be tasked with buildinga formidable team ahead of the 2015Fifa Women’s World Cup in Canada.

Hilton-Smith confirmed that theformer head coach Joseph Mkhonzawill nowwork for the teamas nationalselector for all women’s teams.

Pauw has worked as technical di-rector of the Russian Football Unionandwas thecountry’s interimcoach in2011. She was Netherland’s technicaldirector and the women’s nationalteamcoachfrom2004to2010,leadingthe country to the bronzemedal in theEuropean Championships in Finlandin 2009.

“Vera comes with vast experienceandwill assist in elevating our local fe-male coaches. She will also conductworkshops with our female coacheswho have recently completed theirCAF B licence.

“Former Banyana captain Simphi-we Dludlu completed her UEFA B li-cence in Holland and she’s one of thewomen who will be earmarked to go

further in coaching structures.”Inordertoqualify fortheWorldCup

Banyanawouldhavetofinishinthetopthree at the CAF African WomenChampionships (AWC) scheduled forOctober in Namibia.

However, Banyana still need toqualify for the AWC by winning itshome and away ties against ComorosIslands.

“We have a camp on 19 Marchwhere 40 national team candidateswillarrive, includingthepreviousBan-yana team.

“Vera will have to whittle themdown to prepare for a friendly againstNambia, who are the hosts of theAWCand to prepare for our qualifiersagainst Comoros in May,” continuedHilton-Smith.

Despite thenewtechnical changes,Hilton-Smith insisted that Banyanawould keep its flair on the field of play.

“Banyana’s style won’t change. It’stheir style that has got them to wherethey are.

“They qualified for the Olympicsand the African Women Champion-ships 2012, where they made itthroughtothefinal,andthereisnopos-sibility of changing their style.

“All we want to do is work on theirtactical acumen and their physicalability,” said Hilton-Smith.

TALKINGFOOTBALL

Football is about players

IT has helped UEFA a great deal thattheir president is a former top foot-

baller, club coach and national teamcoach. This has a huge impact interms of understanding the needs ofthe game.

SouthAfricansneedtorealise thata game of football is about players.Currently,onegetsthefeelingthatad-ministrators, coaches and refereesare serving themselves instead offootball and the players.

Players are the most importantcomponentof thegame.Themajorityof us fail to understand that withoutplayers there are no jobs. Fans and

sponsors, in otherwords the fundersof football, pay their money becauseof players. So it is important that welookafter theplayers.Themajorityofus will go hungry if footballers wereto “down tools”.

A fixture list is one of themost im-portantdocumentsinfootball.Itgivesdirection to the game and allowspeople to plan their lives accordingly.

If football in2014cannotdealwithbasic things such as fixtures, thenSafa’s Vision 22 will not be realised.People who work in lower levels of

South African football are volunteer-ing their services even though theyhave other jobs, families and friends. It is important that football treat themwith respect.

Provision of good service is not afavour, it is the responsibility of foot-ball’s employees.

Everything in the game revolvesaround90minutesofamatch.Idoubtthat many people in administrativepositionsunderstand the importanceof their tasks infootballdevelopment.

Poor administration affects the

technical-tactical, physical and psy-chological development of footballadversely. Development is aboutpreparation. Howdo you prepare forthe match if you have to wait for fix-tures to appear in a newspaper on aThursday? I firmlybelieve thatmanyof our brothers and sisters need acrash course on player developmentin order to start appreciating theirroles more. They are very criticalplayers inhelpingSouthAfricadevel-op world-class footballers.

They are farmore important thaneven their political masters. Playersand clubs are football’s clients. Let usserve them with respect.

Unzima lo mthwalo.

The winners will take hometrophies and medals and have theirkit sponsored by Nashua.

More importantly, the games areall closely watched by talent scoutsfrom Maritzburg United on the look-out for players to sign up for Maritz-burg United Colts, the developmentteam for Maritzburg United.

“Soccer development in SouthAf-rica is critical to not only the future ofthe sport, but also to the bettermentof the livesof thechildren in impover-

In a recent statement to the press,South African Football Association(Safa) president Danny Jordaan ac-knowledged that the developmentstructures in South Africa need ur-gentattention ifSouthAfricawants toproduce players “capable of beatingthe best in the world”.

Du Toit views the NashuaMaritz-burg United FC School Soccer Chal-lenge as a big step in the right direc-tion in this regard.

“The truth of the matter is thatsomeof theseschools that takepart inthis tournament don’t even haveproper kits. They’ve never played oneven pitches with proper goalpostsand a linesman in an actual tourna-ment format, so it’s a huge deal forthese kids.

“Thewinnersfromlastyear’stour-nament, Mehlokazulu Secondary, weresohonouredthattheirboyswonthe tournament they erected a bigmarquee at the school and held aprize-giving ceremony in which theplayers were treated like heroes, which was amazing to see,” said Du
