A beacon ofhope for thecommunityESTABLISHED 17 years ago tocater for abused women and chil-dren, the Plessislaer victimsupport unit has, over the years, grown into a ‘one stop’ resourcecentre. NOKULUNGA NGOBESEspoke to Teressa Thusi, a parale-gal advisor at the centre.
THUSI, who has beenworkingforthecentreforthepast16years,said that not only has the centrebecome a resource centre, but ithas also become a place of safetyfor the abandoned.
Speaking to Echo, she said:“When it was established, theintention was to give legal adviceonly to abused women andchildren. But due to various chal-lenges experienced by people, weare doing almost everything.
“We offer counselling to thosewhoneedit, weprovidemediationwhere there are conflicts withinfamilies, we give legal advicewhere it is needed and we alsohave our own outreach pro-grammes where we go out toschoolsandcommunities,educat-ing people about human rights.
“We do referrals for rapevictims and victim empowermentworkshops.Currently, wearealsorunning a workshop with tradi-tional leaders where we educatethemaboutnewacts and the rightthat they have within their com-munities.
“Sometimespeople come tousbecause they just want to be
heard.Wherewe cannot help, wegive themdirectiononwhere theycan find assistance.”
Other services that areprovid-ed by the centre include assistingwomen to make maintenanceapplications, linking the aban-doned and the vulnerable withhomes and places of safety, mak-ingreferrals forthosewhorequiresocialgrantsandofferingcounsel-ling to rapevictimswhoare there-after referred to relevant depart-ments.
Co-worker Fisani Ngcobo-Khuboni, said that while thecentre is floodedwith peoplewithvarious problems daily, the chal-lenge that they have is funding.
“Currently, we get supportfrom the Centre for CommunityJustice, which also does not haveenough money to support all ourprogrammes. We rely on donorswho also help with certain pro-grammes only. There are aban-doned infants who are brought tous by the community.
“Wedonothaveavailablenap-pies and formula to feed them, while we are looking for homesthat can accommodate them.Somepeople sleephere overnightand we do not have the starter kitto help them with food andcosmetics.
“ Ifwehadmore funding, thereis somuchmore thatwe can do tobethebeaconofhopeforourcom-munity”, she concluded.

Kasrils’s rather loud silence past
WHEN I heard of the ‘vote NO’ campaign of formerMK operative and former intelligence minister RonnieKasrils, I initially thought that someone was tellinga joke. I also thought he was mad to come up witha stunt like that.
And when I heard his reasons for this mad action, that it was because of the corruption by certain ANCleaderswhohaveenrichedthemselvesattheexpenseof the poor, I was then convinced that he has lost italtogether.
It came across as if ‘Uncle Ronnie” somehowconsidered himself a selfappointed supervisor of thecurrent leadership, and as a supervisor, he was notimpressed with what they were doing, and becausehe was displeased with them, he was going to get thepeople to withhold their votes or to give it to somenew parties until he, as the elder uncle, was satisfiedthat they were behaving in an exemplary way, atwhich time he was going to tell the voting masses toonce again vote for the ANC.
That is why the whole thing strikes me as insane.Getting the masses to vote for you is not like a
tap which you can open or close at will. I doubt thateven the muchloved Madiba, with all his charisma, could have gotten away with such a stunt.
The most logical thing Kasrils should have donewas to follow all those who had been expelled by theANC: form his own organisation and then campaignfor the election. That he did not do this shows anelement of dishonesty in his claims. That in fact mightbe the reason why he has not been able to explainhis rather loud silence during the arms deal debacleand the HIV/Aids controversy.
Kasril’s hypocrisy and incredulous double standards only became clear when ANC secretarygeneralGwede Mantashe explained that Kasrils was not in
good standing with the ANC as he last renewed hismembership in 2008.
Basically, what it means, is that comrade Kasrilshas not been a member of the ANC for at least sixyears. Now here is the principle underlining his hypocrisy: If he did not renew his membership because heconsidered himself over that, having been in MK,being a minister, then why would he be taken abackif other leaders within his movement consideredthemselves to be deserving of the lavish lifestyle onaccount since they are veterans of the struggle too?He must answer that first.
Clearly Kasril, just like the leaders he seeks torubbish and condemn for their illfound ideas of entitlement, himself seems to harbour his own delusionsof grandeur.
It would seem to me that if uncle Ronnie was reallydisgusted with corruption in his former party, heshould have done one mad thing to end all this madness. With his background in military and intelligence,he should have canvassed his views amongst a selectfew in the army and MK and then stage a coup.
The task of this coup would be to suspend theconstitution and, in its stead, declare rule by decree. Then he would take over the SABC and announce thathenceforth, the country was under military rule.
Parliament would be suspended until freshelections have been conducted in two to three yearswhen the situation in the county had been stabilised. Then comrade Kasrils would announce that he wasthe commanderinchief of all armed forces and president all rolled into one. He would announce that thisdictatorship was aimed at bringing about radicalchanges with regards to the economy, the land, education, health, housing, police and the situationat our porous borders.
Commander Kasrils would inform us that henceforth, no one person owned land, as all land belongedto the state. The minerals and all the wealth of thecounty, including control of banks, would be placedfirmly in state hands.
He would announce new state shall be calledAzania and anyone who did not wish to live underthose conditions were free to leave, as long as theyleft everything that belonged to this county wellalone here.
As the new state had committed itself towardsfulfilling the needs of the revolution of the people ofthis county, all those who had stolen fom the peoplewould be put in jail, to face people’s justice at a laterstage.

Helping to educate the youth in their wardNOMPENDULO NGUBANE>>[email protected]
Realising thateducationwasnotonly a government issue, members of ward 23 gathered
and formed the Sakhisizwecommunity education programme tohelp the youth in the ward.
The programme was formed in2011anditwasofficiallyregisteredin2012.
Speaking to Echo, programmeprocess facilitator Sbusiso Khanyilesaid their vision is to lend a hand tothe youth in the areas of ward 23,especially those who can’t pursuetheir education to tertiary level.
“There are schools that have notdonewell with theirmatric results inthe past. One of the reasons theschools are not doing so well is theshortage of books.
“Ourmain concern is exactly that, andwehaveknockedonsomedoors, asking for help with books.
“We were successful with thatinitiativeasHiltonCollegeresponded
by giving books whichwe donated tosome of the schools.
“Oneof theschoolswhowedonat-ed books to was able to do better intheir matric pass rate last year,” said
Khanyile. The school whose pass rate has
gone up from 28% to 79% last year isSiyahlomula secondary school.
“We are in contact with institu-
tions like Olwazini Centre, where wetaketheyouththatwehavementoredso they can familiarise themselveswith available skills in the centre.
“Most of them can’t afford tertiary
education and it’s one of our initia-tives to send them to institutions thatcan help them with skills,” saidKhanyile.
He said that in order for theirorganisation to be visible, theyintroduce themselves to schools.
“In that way we are able to reachpupils thatwe canmentor andassist.Whatwe do is, with the tenmembersthat we have, eachmembermentorsa group of 10 pupils.
“Afterwehaveworkedwith them,we deploy them to skill institutionsandwedoafollow-uponhowtheyaredoing.
“We are proud to say thatwe havealsomanagedtostoptheclosingofthe[Ashdown] library in the ward.
“Thatwasalsopartofmakingsurethat the youth are not being deniedtheir right to learn,” he said.
Khanyile further said they havealso worked with educationorganisations such as Soul Buddies,Whizz Kids Academy, Life and Timeand Sakhubuntu organisation inSobantu.

SA PROBLEMcannot beaddressedby foreignersBLACKSouthAfricansinpositionsofpow-
er are a very interesting species. Gener-ally,we tend to think that apartheid only
affected the poor and uneducated.Thedecisionsmadebysomeofourbrothers
and sisters in higher echelons of powershow the amount of damage caused by apart-heid. Foreign nationals find it easy to get sup-port from our public and private sectors. Ourleaders will mobilise all resources if you claimto have discovered a “Ronaldo” or “Messie.”
We believe the stories of foreigners are bet-ter than those of our brothers.
Therearepeople in theprovinceofKwaZu-lu-Natal like Jef Nkosi in Newcastle, BonganiYengwain Durban,ZephMthembuinPieter-maritzburg, the lateReggie Shelembe etc.whohave labouredforyears underdifficultcondi-tions. There have been youth football pro-grammes that produced exceptional football-ers like Imbali Te Huis.
The coaches in this programme identifiedand trainedplayers that representedSouthAf-rica in various age-group competitions. SouthAfrica would not have enjoyed the skills ofMbuleloMabizela,JimmyTau,PapiZothwane,AndileCele,SiphesihleNgobese.Thelistisend-less.
These are some of the sad stories that wehaveobservedinafreeSouthAfrica.Blackpeo-plefinditdifficulttoempowerandsupporttheir
brothers and sisters.Lack of respect for local expertise is mind
boggling. It will take South Africans anotherhundred years to reap the benefits of freedomand democracy. Ordinary South Africansare expected to make sacrifices while the eliteand their foreign friends reap all the benefits. There are no quick fix methods in football. Itisnotsurprisingthatveryfewpeoplearewillingto serve the game.
Presently, there is very little being done atthe lowest levels of the game. We are failing todo the correct things like the rest of the world. We have “priests”, women with no technicalbackground and all sorts of people leading ourtechnical evolution. It seems doing the correctthings is less important than being politicallycorrect.
I also see that the U17 team is more a Gau-tengteamthananational team.Is thisacorrectmessage fromSafa’snewregime? Is it true thatthe best talent in this age-group can only befoundatKaiserChiefs,BidvestWitsandMame-lodi Sundowns?
South African problems cannot be ad-dressed by foreigners. The sooner the leadersateverylevelofthegameunderstandthistruth, the better.
Themore things change, theworse theybe-come.
