Kuriyipe Chairman, Project Committee Do you know that over 1,500 children are diagnosed with retinoblastoma eye cancer every year in the country? Retinoblastoma is the leading cause of malignant eye cancer in children. Retinoblastoma (Rb) is a fast-growing cancer of the retina which affects chil- dren and babies under approximately five years of age. It is treatable and, in 98% of cases, curable. But for many children affected by this condition, treatment is delayed, which can often lead to loss of an eye, sometimes loss of sight and, in extreme cases, loss of life - all because of lack of awareness of this condition. Because of the rapid growth of retinoblastoma, which ac- counts for one in 10 cancers in children under one year old, speedy referral to a specialist centre for diagnosis and treatment is critical. Indian Medical Association along with Ranjini Eye Hospital, Rotary Club of Cochin Uptown and All India Ophthalmological Society organised the World Retinoblastoma Week (8th to 14th May 2011). The function was held at the new OT complex at Ranjini Eye Hospital. Dr. Sachidananda Kamath, President, IMA Cochin, inaugurated the awareness programme and in his inaugural speech, stressed on the need for early diagnosis and management for better results in childhood malignancies like Retinoblastoma. Rotary Club of Cochin Uptown and Ranjini Eye Hospital gave financial support to Ms. Anagha, a 10 year old girl who had bilateral Retinoblastoma and had her right eye enucleated at the age of 2 years. Her mother too had retinoblastoma and underwent enucleation of the right eye when she was young. Anagha’s father expressed his gratitude to Dr. N.S.D. Raju, and said that it was his early diagnosis of retinoblastoma in Anagha’s left eye, that saved the eye and prevented her from being bilaterally blind. There was a screening of a video on Retinoblastoma at the end of the programme. Rtn. Vishnu Presad, President of Rotary Club of Cochin Uptown, after handing over the Cheque to Anagha, promised that Uptown will continue this awareness programme on Retinoblastoma every year in connection with the World Retinoblastoma. wOrld schiZOPhrenia day 24th May 2011Schizophrenia is a severe form of mental illness affecting about 7 per thousand of the adult population, mostly in the age group 15-35 years. Schizophrenia may cause disability leading to restrictions on many domains of daily life such as hygiene, self-management, vocational and leisure activities, and family and social relationships. Considering the importance of this illness every year World Federation of Mental Health is observing May 24th as the World Schizophrenia Day to make the public aware about this chronic mental illness in order to detect early, treat early, rehabilitate and most importantly to remove the stigma about schizophrenia in the society.

Kindly observe this day in befitting manner at branch level. Kindly use the service of psychiatrists of your area or from nearest Medical College for the same. We should have better knowledge than the public about the mental health. It should never be other way. An update will always help us to improve our information.
