The Home Front 1939-1945

May 8, 2005 is the 60th anniversary of VE Day (Victory in Europe), the end of the war in Europe. This

exhibition of colour posters, ephemera, letters, books, magazines and photographs is dedicated to those

who served their country at home and abroad.

In September 1939, Canadians prepared for another war with memories of the Great War still fresh in

their minds. It was determined that Canada’s war effort would be concentrated in financial and industrial

support, and the first priority would be to secure the nation's borders. By the spring of 1940, the progress

of the war in Europe had changed dramatically. With the German invasion of Denmark, Norway,

Belgium and Holland, and the fall of France, Canadians reassessed their own vulnerability. People feared

that there might not always be an England, and disturbing reports confirmed the presence of German U-

Boats in the St. Lawrence. For the next five years, the war effort permeated Canadian society. All actions

at home, at work, and at play were focused on victory. Indeed, the Second World War was fought on the

home front as well as in Europe and in the Pacific theatre.

Dear Faculty Advisors and Delegates, It is our great pleasure and honor to announce the sixth Annual Chaminade Model United Nations (CHAMUN) to be held from 20-22 April 2005. With another MUN under our belt, the secretariat has high hopes for CHAMUN 2005. CHAMUN 2004 saw some 300 delegates from Ontario, Quebec and the United States flood to Toronto to partake in a wide spectrum of committees and crisis simulations. This year’s conference will once again be held at the prestigious Metro Hall, an ideal venue located in the heart of the ever-vibrant downtown area. The theme for this year’s symposium is World Aggression and, as usual, we will be providing a wide variety of committees to address this topic. Once again, we will include in our list of UN bodies two mainstays: The General Assembly and The Security Council. As well, to ensure the greatest amount of global representation, we will also be simulating The African Union, International Court of Justice and Economic and Social Council. The date for final registration for CHAMUN 2005 is Monday March 28th, 2005. For conference details and registration information, feel free to refer to our website www.chamun.ca. If you have any remaining question concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected] so that I may be of assistance to you. We look forward to meeting you at CHAMUN 2005. "It's the first full reunion we've had in 140 years," said Suzanne McCormick, publicity chair of the reunion committee. Riverdale resident Mary Dobel, 102, who went to school in 1913, is one of the oldest alumni. She is planning on attending the reunion.

GENERATIONS OF STUDENTS Organizers are encouraging past teachers, students, administrators and staff members of St. Joseph's to attend. "There are four generations of families who went to St. Joseph's," McCormick said. "We're hoping for a big turn out." There will be a meet and greet in the church hall of St. Joseph's Church, 172 Leslie St. on Friday, May 6.

MASS PLANNED The next day there will be a 10 a.m. Mass, a school blessing and an open house at the school with decade rooms, memorabilia displays and souvenirs. The dinner and dance will be held on Saturday night at Estonian House, 958 Broadview Ave., just north of Mortimer Avenue. Tickets are $50 in advance or $60 at the door. For more information, visit the reunion's website at www.stjosephsreunion.ca or call 416-393-5209.

The new Brebeuf College building at Steeles and Bayview Avenues was designed by SkyDome (now Rogers Centre) architect Rod Robbie. 'We're a great school in a great building,' Brebeuf teacher says Justin Skinner, York Mirror – March 30, 2005 After two years spent in the vacated Bathurst Heights Collegiate building, staff and students at Brebeuf College are holding an official opening ceremony for their new school. The all-boys Catholic high school has more than doubled its enrolment since it was founded by the Jesuits in 1963, prompting the need for a new and much larger building. "Our old school was built for about 500 students and at one point, we were up to about 1,200," said Michael Da Costa, a Brebeuf College teacher and vice president of the Brebeuf Alumni Association. "We had more portables than we did school space." To make room for the increasing student population, the school decided to tear down the old building and build a new facility at its Steeles and Bayview avenues-area site. The school spent the previous two school years at Bathurst Heights before returning to Brebeuf this fall. "When we went to Bathurst Heights, we went from being in a little school with lots of portables to a collegiate built for 2,000 students," Da Costa said. "The main problem there was the distance. We have students coming from downtown, from Aurora, Thornhill and the Scarborough-Pickering border. It was hard for some of our students to get (to Bathurst Heights) and our enrolment dropped a bit because of that." Once they moved back into their Steeles Avenue location, however,Brebeuf's enrolment spiked once again. The new building, designed by SkyDome (now the Rogers Centre) architect Rod Robbie, gives the school a new image. "Our numbers are up because of the building," Da Costa said. "It's gone up by 100 this year and next year, we have 290 Grade 9s coming in, which is an increase of 70 or 80 over last year." The increase in enrolment will even help offset the decrease in students suffered by all secondary schools when Ontario did away with Grade 13. The new building features a double gym, a 300-seat theatre, a large atrium and library, four computer labs, a MIDI (music) lab, a television studio and a chapel. "We also have a closed-circuit television system where we can broadcast the announcements," Da Costa said. "Our old school had one gym and a library that was the size of a classroom. Most old Catholic high schools were built like elementary schools, on the cheap. The new building is bright, colourful and airy." The new building and the return to Steeles Avenue have been welcome changes for students and staff at the school. "We're happy to be back in Willowdale," Da Costa said. "We used to be a great school in a small building, but now we're a great school in a great building." An official opening ceremony and solemn blessing have been scheduled for April 10, with local politicians, clergy, staff, parents, students and alumni invited to attend. A mass is scheduled for 1 p.m. on that day. The college is at 211 Steeles Ave. E.

SUBJECT: 8-5 OSAID Appreciation Award for Father John Redmond C.S.S. On March 3, 2005 Father John Redmond Catholic Secondary School was presented with an appreciation award by OSAID (Ontario Students Against Impaired Driving) in recognition of its commitment to safety and responsibility. It is because of the dedication and commitment of the students and staff at Father John Redmond that OSAID can claim that the largest reduction in the rate of impaired driving in Ontario has occurred among the youth population. By running an OSAID group in schools teens continue to be educated about this serious issue and are provided with solutions. Congratulations to the entire community.

Health and Safety … helping to preserve people, property and resources by preventing workplace injuries and accidents

THIS ARTICLE WILL BE APPEAR IN THE DIRECTOR’S BULLETIN

THROUGHOUT THE MONTH OF APRIL

WORKPLACE FATALITIES

NATIONAL DAY OF

MOURNING

THURSDAY, APRIL 28, 2005

Each year, workplace accidents and occupational disease are responsible for a large number of workplace fatalities among Canadian workers. On average, 3 Canadians die each workday due to workplace accidents. Thousands suffer disabling injuries, may of them permanent causing enormous pain and suffering for employees and their families.

In recognition of these ongoing losses and injuries, the Canadian Labour Congress and the Federal Government have declared April 28, 2005 as “National Day of Mourning”.

To commemorate this day, workers throughout Canada are encouraged to observe a moment of silence to remember those workers who died from workplace accidents or occupationally related diseases.

All School Principals are encouraged to share this information during a staff meeting in April 2005. All teachers are encouraged to incorporate safety in their daily classroom activities

Secondary School Principals and teachers are encouraged to remind all students who are working part-time to work safely and to ask questions in the workplace if they are unsure about a job task.

Seven young workers between the ages of 14 and 24 died in Ontario workplaces during the summer of 2002.

If you have any questions, please call your TCDSB Occupational Health and Safety Department, Corrado Maltese, ext. 2665 or Louise Barker, ext. 2674

MEASURING SAFETY PERFORMANCE:

TCDSB ACCIDENT RECORD

Workplace accidents to Board employees are costly in both human and economic terms. The main objective of the occupational health and safety program is to reduce and eventually eliminate all workplace-related injuries. The ultimate goal is zero injuries.

Definitions: lost time injury is an injury where an employee was off work at least one day following the day of the accident. In a health care injury, there is no lost time, medical treatment was sought.
