The Dickens LMC Policies and Procedures from A-Z:

A Guide for Students and Classroom Teachers

Accelerated Reader: Library Media Specialist will provide each student with a tracking card where he or she can

mark off every book read and tested with an 85 percentage or better within his or her ZPD. After each box has

been checked in order, the student can progress to the next level of the school-wide theme and earn a reward. As

students complete each ZPD range, they are ready to STAR tested again for progress and possibly given a new

range and a new card. Students who individually progress more than one academic year in reading will be entered

into the Dickens ES Library Media Center's Reading Hall of Fame complete with a photo and special presentation

in front of parents and students.

Attention Getters:

• Mrs. Bentheim will clap a rhythm. You will listen and clap the rhythm back one time. Your voices will be off and your eyes

will be facing Mrs. Bentheim.

• Mrs. Bentheim will shake the rain stick and expect you to be ready when the “rain” stops.

• Mrs. Bentheim will say, “1,2,3 eyes on me.” Students will repeat back, “1,2,3 eyes on you.”

• Mrs. Bentheim will say, “Freeze, Turn, Listen, and Learn.” You will repeat this phrase back, making sure to follow the

directions of each word.

• Mrs. Bentheim will say, “SALAMI!” Students will say, “Stop And Look At Me Immediately.”

Asking Questions: No question is a stupid question! But if you have to ask questions about Mrs. Bentheim’s

instructions because you were not listening, you may lose points toward your class’s Discover Card for the day. If you

have a question, you must raise your hand. Make sure to respect others by not interrupting when someone else is

talking. I love to have my students participate, but raised hands give everyone the chance to speak and keep the LMC

environment professional.

Bathrooms/Drinks: Students will not be permitted to use the restroom or drinking fountain during instructional

time in the LMC. Classroom teachers are to take their students for drinks/bathroom breaks prior to scheduled

time in the LMC.

Theft in any form will not be tolerated. The Dickens Elementary School LMC reserves the right to restrict, suspend,

or revoke library privileges according the judgment of the LMC library media specialist. The following situations

serve as examples of when such action might be taken: numerous lost or damaged materials, chronic overdue

materials, theft or attempted theft of materials, and/or other extreme cases.

Birthday Book Club: We have a special Birthday Book Club in the Dickens Library Media Center. Parents may

donate $15.00 toward the purchase of a special hardcover book in honor of a student’s birthday. Participating

students will be the first to check out the donated book! It will have a personalized nameplate in the front so

everyone who reads this book will know who donated it. The student will also have his or her picture displayed

on a school bulletin board all year long and be invited to attend our year-end Birthday Book Club Bash!

Blog: The Friends of the Library Club will blog about their activities in the library, as well as interview fellow students to report on

their reading activities and interests. Students who wish to may post reviews of their books. News will also be disseminated via the

blog.

• Do not include your entire last name or any personal information. Please use your last initial. Parents, a great way to

identify yourself is by using your child’s name; for example: “Jacob’s mom.” Never give out your address or phone number

in your posts or comments.

• In other words, never share personal information about yourself that you wouldn’t want a random stranger to know.

• If you want to write your opinion on a topic, make sure you're not going to be offensive to anyone as you write it.

• Always make sure you check over your post for spelling errors, grammar errors, and your use of words.

• Don't write about other people without permission; if you can't get their permission, use first names

only. Never share someone else’s last name.

• Use appropriate language. Remember that everything you put on the web can be seen by lots of

people. Be sure that you are proud of everything you write. Do not write anything that could hurt

someone’s feelings or embarrass you later.

• Show your thinking, and encourage others to refine their thinking. Instead of writing, “Your post was so cool, dude,” try to

express yourself more clearly. If you think a post was cool, try to tell why it was so amazing. Don’t be afraid to ask

questions!

• Remember that all comments have to be approved before they are posted to the blog. If your comment or post does not

appear right away, please do not send it again. Mrs. Bentheim will review all comments and posts before posting them, so

remember to make wise choices. Let’s be amazing digital citizens.

Book Browsing: Students will browse books during each library media center visit. Students are expected to use their shelf markers

while browsing so that books and other LMC materials remain in their appropriate places for other patrons. If a student changes his

or her mind about a book, he or she is to place it on the “I changed my mind” cart.

Bubble: The LMC bubble consists of the circulation desk area. Students are not to be inside of the bubble at any time for any reason.

Extensions of the LMC bubble include Mrs. Bentheim’s office and the LMC storage room.

Censorship, Confidentiality, and Intellectual Freedom: The Dickens Elementary School LMC conforms to the American Library

Association's Position Statement on the Confidentiality of Library Records. In essence, the library community recognizes that

children and youth have the same rights to privacy as adults. Intellectual freedom is the right of every individual to both seek and

receive information from all points of view without restriction. It provides for free access to all expressions of ideas through which

any and all sides of a question, cause, or movement may be explored. However, the LMC is bound

to all safety and security provisions of the Clark County School District and Nevada Revised

Statutes. We respect our patrons' ownership of and responsibility for the interactive and printed

content they choose to share. It is our belief that censoring this content is contrary to a service

that bases itself on freedom of expression within the parameters of Clark County School District

policies and Nevada Revised Statutes, along with the positions statements of the American Library

Association.

Check-outs and Renewals: The Dickens Elementary School Library Media Center has developed circulation guidelines and

procedures in order to ensure fair access to information for all student and faculty patrons.

Kindergarten* 1 book

First Grade 1 -2 books

Second Grade 2-3 books

Third Grade 3-4 books

Fourth Grade 4-5 books

Fifth Grade 5 books

• Student/Faculty ID number is required to check out library material. (Parents will need their child’s school ID (or

lunch) number.

• All previously checked out materials must be returned prior to additional check outs.

Page 3: Dickens Lmc Procedures From A Z

3

• Reference books are checked out to classroom teachers only for use on campus and are due back within two

school days. If needed longer, please contact the media specialist.

• General collection books have a one-week check out period and can be renewed for an additional one week if no

holds have been placed by another patron.

• Magazine back issues are checked out overnight. No renewals. Only one magazine may be checked out at a time.

Current issues are available for in-LMC reading only.

• If patrons need additional time with materials, the item(s) must be brought to the media center for renewal.

• Patrons will not loan materials to other patrons or individuals. Items must be checked out in the patron’s name

and on his or her account.

• Patrons may access the LMC at any time during the school day in groups of 2-3 per teacher as long as each student

brings his or her school ID card/lunch number (pass).

*We will work to get LMC materials in the hands of kindergarten students after teaching them about book care and responsibility

since they are at a pivotal point in their development as literate individuals. Kindergarten students will need written parent

permission prior to checking out materials.

Collaboration: Information use is best taught in context, library use instruction is integrated throughout the curriculum and the

media center staff welcomes and encourages collaboration with teachers. Please refer to the LMC’s Collaboration Policy within the

Teachers section of the LMC website at www.MrsBentheim.com

Computers: There are six computers for student use. A variety of activities are permitted with permission from Mrs. Bentheim.

Computer and Internet usage must be in accordance with the student’s signed Network Access Agreement (AUP) and LMC-specific

Media Release form on file. No food or liquids (including water) are to be near the computers. Because of the limited amount of

computers, students must be sure that the computers are available for usage if they intend to work online or with

a software program. With a school population of over 700 students we have to make sure that our students are

using their time wisely, so students using the computer for personal reasons or non-school related material will

not be tolerated. We will monitor all students and make sure that work is appropriate. Instructional use of the

programs will be given by the media specialist if requested. If a patron is having a problem with a computer, he or

she should contact the media specialist.

Conduct: During instruction, you are expected to listen to Mrs. Bentheim by keeping your eyes on Mrs. Bentheim, your ears open,

your mouth closed, and your hands working. While you are working, make sure you understand the directions before you begin and

remain on task. If you need to get out of your seat during work time, you will raise your hand and ask for permission.

Discussions: Students grades will be partially based upon the quality of oral and written contributions. Make all questions and

comments are relevant to the current discussion. Wait for other classmates to finish their thoughts prior to stating your own.

Dismissal: Students will be dismissed by Mrs. Bentheim as they appear to be ready. Before anyone may be dismissed,

all students must be standing at their assigned seats behind their pushed-in chairs and quietly facing Mrs. Bentheim.

When everyone is quiet, chairs are neatly pushed in, and any garbage has been picked up, Mrs. Bentheim will dismiss

students by sections or groups. Students will line up quietly single file and hug their books. (“Hug ‘em like you love

‘em.”)

Discover Card: Classes can earn one Discover Card per scheduled class visit as long as expectations are met. Classes will be evaluated

based on the following criteria: entering quietly, listening attentively, following directions, taking care of library media center

materials, respecting others, participating, returning materials, cleaning up, and lining up. Each expectation is worth one point. A

class that earns 8-9 points will earn a Discover Card.

Dress Code: If students are wearing something that is against dress code they will be sent to the office.

Emergencies and Assemblies: In all emergency situations, whether it is a drill or an actual emergency, we are to

act quietly and quickly for everyone’s safety.

• Fire: We will immediately stop what we are doing. Take your belongings and line up at the door. Once

everyone is lined up, we will exit the building in a single-file line. We will wait outside until further notice

is given. Attendance will be taken. Remain quiet at all times and in a straight line.

• Shelter-in-Place: If Shelter-in-Place is called, everyone will return to their assigned seats quickly and quietly. No one is to

enter or exit during this time. If you are outside of the classroom, get to the nearest classroom as soon as possible and

Page 4: Dickens Lmc Procedures From A Z

notify the teacher that you should be in the LMC. Attendance will be taken. Students will remain at their desks until the all-

clear is given.

• Assemblies: Line up as you are excused. Walk quietly to the assembly location while staying in a

straight line. The line leader will lead the class to its assigned spot quickly and quietly.

Entering the Library Media Center: Once you enter the LMC, you are expected to act professionally. You are scholars in

the business of learning. Students will enter quietly after being invited inside by Mrs. Bentheim. Students will place

books under the correct category tag on the counter with spines to tummies and barcode labels facing up. Students

wishing to renew materials will place the item(s) in the renewal basket located on the circulation counter. When finished,

students will quietly go to their assigned seats.

Environment: The LMC is home to students and staff. All patrons will clean up after themselves. Put periodicals and magazines in

their places, place unwanted books in the appropriate receptacles, and remove any trash or other items that does not belong in the

library. Please be professional and treat this classroom as the learning environment that it is. Students will not be dismissed until

the LMC is clean.

Finishing Early: If you finish an in-class assignment before the rest of the class, you may ask to use the computer for specific tasks,

begin browsing, or read independently.

Food and Drink: Because of the potentially disastrous effects on costly books, audio-visual equipment and computers,

eating, drinking, or gum chewing is not permissible in the library media center.

Friends of the Library Club (5th

grade only): This select group of students will be at least two days per week before

school (between 8 and 9). To be considered for a library apprentice position, fifth grade students must submit a completed

application with favorable references from his or her classroom teacher and two other specialists; secure parent permission; earn an

85% minimum score on the alphabetization and decimals quiz; and successfully complete a brief interview with the library media

specialist. Please see the media specialist for the application, recommendation form, and quiz. These students will be also be eligible

to assist other students during their class library times.

Getting Mrs. Bentheim’s Attention: If you have a question or comment for everybody, raise your hand and quietly wait to be

recognized. If you need a tissue, point your index finger in the air. If you have a private comment or request, put two fingers in the

air.

Group Work: Sometimes you will work in small groups. Sometimes when you form small groups you will

know the people in your group, sometimes not. Each student will have a specific task and is expected to do

his or her best work at all times while keeping the noise volume to a reasonable level.

Guest Teachers: You are to be on your best behavior when a guest teacher is present.

Hallway Behavior: When you are waiting or moving in the hallways, you are expected to walk quietly, keep your hands to yourself,

and listen to directions.

Heading: Written assignments should have the following heading on them in the upper right-hand corner of the page:

Hours of Operation and Scheduling: The Dickens LMC is open from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily. The library program is an extension of

the classroom so information skills are taught and learned within the context of the classroom curriculum. Classes are systematically

scheduled in the library media center to provide teacher release or preparation time. Students and

classroom teachers are able, however, to come to the center throughout the day to use information

sources, to read for pleasure, and to meet and work with other students and teachers with previous

arrangements. Cooperative planning by the teacher and library media specialist integrates information

skills and materials into the classroom curriculum and results in the development of assignments that encourage open inquiry. This

standard for scheduling time in the school library media center is called hybrid scheduling.

leaving the library with newly checked out books, the student is gambling on the assumption that the book is free of damage. Such

students who do not follow library policies and procedures undermine the library system and enable others to "get away" with

damaging books. Thus students who check out damaged books and do not show damage to the library staff before leaving the

library media center will be held responsible for all costs. No exceptions!

Overdue notices will be delivered to students in sealed envelopes to protect privacy as stipulated by the American Association of

School Librarians (AASL). A weekly report of fines will also be printed and posted outside of the LMC entrance. (To protect student

privacy, only ID numbers will be listed.)

• Students with overdue books will lose borrowing privileges. Privileges will be restored when overdue books are returned or

fines have been paid. Loan periods are subject to change depending on patron's on-time turn-in record.

• Students must pay for lost books or books damaged beyond repair regardless of if the fine was initiated at Dickens

Elementary School. If the fine remains unpaid, student high school diplomas will be withheld at the high school’s discretion

until the account is settled.

• Fines may also be assessed for limited damage that results from abuse or neglect on the part of the

student. In no case should a fine exceed 25% of the full purchase of the item. For additional

information about the Lost and Damaged Materials Policy, see CCSD Regulation 5134 and NRS 393.170.

• If a student is unable to pay a fine, the responsibility rests with the student to make arrangements to pay off the debt by

working in the media center before or after school for $2.00 per hour in 15-30-minute increments—with parental

permission.

Passes: Unless a student is using the LMC with his or her teacher, the student must have a library pass (student ID card). Students

will sign in and out for all media center visits unless they are part of a scheduled class. Students must be in the media center with an

instructional purpose (including recreational reading). The media center is not a place for misbehaving students.

Pencil Sharpener: You may use the pencil sharpener with permission. Only one person at a time will be allowed to use the

sharpener. Mrs. Bentheim reserves the right to stop anyone from using the sharpener at any time.

Podcasting Station KDBZ (Kids Discover Books Zone): Podcasting will be done before school or during library browsing time. Only

students with LMC-specific permission slips on file will be able to participate. Students must write script, practice it, and then they

can be filmed and record their voices. Topics include reviews, events information, public service announcements, etc. (Students can

also create book commercials and library commercials in between their features.) Volunteer faculty members can also record mini-

podcasts.

Readers Hall of Fame: Each trimester students who progress two years or more in reading, return all materials on

time, demonstrate great behavior in the library media center, and/or help others become better readers will be sent

a letter inviting them to be part of the Readers Hall of Fame. They’ll come get their picture taken, share their most

favorite part about the library media center and one piece of reading advice on paper, and then have that

information displayed on a library or hall wall. At the end of the year, those in the Hall of Fame will come to the

library media center for a special party. Hall of Famers will also be included in the library web site.

Rotating Book Baskets: The Library Media Specialist will provide classroom teachers with rotating selections of quality AR materials

for student use in the classroom. Materials are returned during regularly scheduled library time. If classroom

teachers need specially themed materials, these can be provided with some advance notice by using the appropriate

form on the library media center web site. As long as there is teacher support for keeping track of the books each

day (count them before kids dismiss--tie it to math), and teachers are reminding students how to care for the books

as taught, this will work!

School Library Media Center Review/Selection Committee: Members of the selection and review committee

include department chairs or designated classroom teachers, one administrator (if necessary), the educational

computer strategist, and three parents. Meetings will be conducted on an as-needed basis, but not less frequent than twice per

grading period.

Social Networking and Web 2.0 Tools: In recent years, forward thinking school systems around the country have discussed

strategies to leverage a relatively new set of web tools known collectively as Web 2.0 to make curriculum more engaging to

students. These tools include blogs, wikis and social networking sites. In short, Web 2.0 turned the web into a much more dynamic,

interactive experience. We believe strongly in the educational value of a project using Web 2.0 tools intelligently. We have seen

firsthand evidence that supports the research that these tools really engage high school students around topics in curriculum. We

also recognize our responsibility to monitor student work and confine

school-sponsored use of these tools to ways that advance learning and

keep kids as safe as possible in the spirit of governing District policies.

We also encourage parents to educate themselves about technologies

that have had such a profound effect on so many aspects of our culture

and the lives of our students. A number of resources are available on

the LMC website at http://www.MrsBentheim.com. When schools and

libraries help patrons use social networking tools safely and smartly,

they also help students meet developmental assets. When patrons learn how to use blogs, wikis, and other social networking

tools within an educational context, they learn about boundaries and expectations. When they are able to use social networking

tools while learning, they have a commitment to learning. When patrons have the opportunity to communicate with peers, experts,

authors, etc. via online social networking, they develop social and cultural competence. When student patrons work with adults and

peers on developing social network sites and teaching how to use these sites, they are empowered. When patrons have a voice in

the future of the school or the library, they gain a sense of personal identity and value. When patrons see how librarians and

teachers appropriately use social networks, they are presented with role models. The administrator of the library's social networking

sites, the school library media specialist, will follow the guidelines below in moderating LMC social networking spaces. These are in

addition to the CCSD Acceptable Use Policy and LMC-specific Media Release form.

Supply Center: The supply center is stocked with colored pencils, markers, scissors and glue sticks that we will use for various

projects. These supplies are a privilege not a right. Do not throw, break, build towers out of, waste, or in any other way abuse these

supplies. Leave the supplies alone unless you are directed by Mrs. Bentheim use them for a specific activity.

Teacher Work Station: A teacher workstation with unfiltered Internet access is available per CCSD policy so that

educators may have the academic freedom to visit sites relating to instructional purposes. It is for licensed teacher

use only during normal LMC hours.

Transitions: When moving from one activity or location to another, follow directions immediately, move quickly and quietly as

directed, complete tasks quickly without sacrificing quality, and do not bother others.

Value: Get the most out of the Dickens LMC by consistently attending school, completing 100 percent of the required work during

the school year, read and write whenever you can, complete all special projects, check out AND return library media center

materials, and always discuss questions or concerns with Mrs. Bentheim.
