Message from the Principal Carols Concert and Christmas Market Stalls What a wonderful evening it was last Thursday!

I am sure you will all agree with me that the children performed beautifully and the whole concert was very enjoyable.

Many thanks go to our wonderful CCNPS teachers for not only preparing their grade items but for also adding special touches such as costumes and props which helped create the wonderful atmosphere.

The finale was particularly special with everyone singing along with our two star performers – Mrs Gourley and Mr Tier. Aren’t we fortunate to have these two talented musicians teaching at CCNPS!

Mrs Karen Crawford spent many hours coordinating the K‐6 Carols event and her amazing efforts are much appreciated. Mr Ballinger, in David Gabbott’s absence, was managing the role of General Assistant as well as his normal deputy role, and Mrs Gourley was ferrying equipment backwards and forwards in her car during Wednesday and Thursday.

What a fantastic team effort!

The Christmas Market stalls were a great success as well. Congratulations to Jody Bayley and our P&C, and all the parents involved for your amazing efforts in supporting our school through this excellent fund‐raising event.

Schools Spectacular I was fortunate to be in the audience at the Schools Spectacular last Friday. The whole event was truly ‘spectacular’ and I was particularly proud of our girls performing in the ‘Sound of Music’ item.

Congratulations girls for your outstanding dancing, and thank you Mrs Auton for giving the girls the opportunity to be part of such an amazing and prestigious Public Schools NSW event!

Concreting Urgent help is required for this Saturday from 8am for our stage one beautification of the southern playground. Tim Hummel has kindly offered to do the excavation (preparation work) and Brett Barnes is leading the concreting. If you can assist please contact Mrs Gretel Watson on [email protected] A.S.A.P.

Presentation Assemblies (Reminder) Presentation Assemblies for each grade will be held in December. The dates for these special assemblies are:

Year 6 Graduation Thursday 10 December 1.00pm

Students in kindergarten, year 1, year 2 and year 6 will each be presented with a certificate of acknowledgement. There will be some additional awards also for students from years 1 to year 6. It is hoped all parents will attend these assemblies. Parents of students receiving the additional awards will receive a telephone call from the school providing you with this information.

This year, over 3,600 of the most talented singers, dancers, instrumentalists and actors from 491 NSW public schools took part in the show’s final performances at the Qantas Credit Union Arena. Congratulations to Cook House for winning the term four House Points competition. The scores were very close with points tallied as follows:

Bass 229 2nd, Cook 239 1st, Flinders 201 4th and Phillip 224 3rd

All Cook House students may wear something red tomorrow

The winning house for 2015 will have the opportunity next Friday, to wear their house colours.

It was wonderful to see so many parents attend the Y1 music concert with Carlos Villanueva on Tuesday and

then the Y4 music concert today. These concerts for parents, are the culmination of two term’s, in class,

specialist music lessons. We look forward to Y3’s concert next Wednesday. Parents are invited to attend at

1.50pm.

Monday morning will be the last time for the photos, currently on display on the verandah, to be ordered. If

anyone has ordered photos online through Advanced Life Photography and is still waiting please let me know

and I will follow it up for you.

Thank you to the 44 Scripture and Ethics volunteers who have regularly assisted our school every Tuesday

morning, throughout the year and shown patience and encouragement towards our ‘Curly Kids’. This week a

combined Ecumenical Christmas Service was held for Y3‐6 and then K‐2 in the hall. Further in this newsletter is

a request for more volunteers to be trained with the Ethics Foundation. Scripture and Ethics will resume next

year.

This week it is been a pleasure to host four Y10 work experience students and two Y10 community service

students. Thank you to Sophie, Caity, Serena, Kyle, Nina and Izzy.

Yesterday the hall was ‘rocking’ with two performances by the Balgowlah Boys’ Campus Summer Tour. Fifty

students entertained our students and showcased the wonderful music program in operation at Balgowlah

Boys’ Campus. Thank you to everyone who contributed a gold coin donation to assist our band fundraising.

On the subject of bands the Training Band for 2016 (now the Recorder Band) have been all allocated their

instruments for next year. Parents are encouraged to start to make contact with instrument tutors now, as

spaces that they have available start to fill quickly.

Congratulations to the following 24 Y6 students who have been a fantastic asset to our School Band Program

for many years. Hamish L, Jackson S, Connor C, Jesse M, Briony C, Sarah E, Mia K, Emily Mc, Jessica P, Jack J,

Olivia B, Emilia C, Abigail M, Paris N, Caitlin P, Lingling Q, Connor R, Eva S, Tilly D, Jay D, Fletcher G, Sam P,

I hope you all get an opportunity to continue your ‘musical journey’ in Y7 and beyond. Thank you for the commitment you have all made to each of the Curl Curl North PS bands over the years. You are all fantastic and individually sounding great on your instruments. Thank you also to the parents of these Y6 musicians, who have supported the Band Program and all its activities, including Band Camps, concerts and performances, fundraising, coordinating bands and of course the weekly setting up and taking down before and after all rehearsals. We need parents just like you to continue the success of the program. Thank you so much! We will miss you!

Band News Recorder Band parents, if your child has been offered a school instrument, and you wish to take up the offer, please return the contract agreement immediately to secure the instrument.

CURLY CLEAN UP IS ON AGAIN!!!!! NEXT WEEK

Classes from Years 3-6 will again be spending some time doing community service; helping to clean up the parklands around Curl Curl Lagoon and Greendale Creek.

So, Years 3-6 students need to be prepared! Send along: long tongs, gloves and maybe gumboots, next Monday.

Library News Vinnie’s Food Drive The Spirit of Christmas was well and truly alive at Curl Curl School last week. As you can see from the photo of our Christmas tree, the amount of food collected by the students in our school was astronomical. The students were so happy and excited to put their food under the tree, it was a joy to see. They should be incredibly proud of themselves for supporting such a worthy cause. The office received a call on Tuesday from Vinnie’s saying they could not believe a school had raised that amount of precious food. It was already being packed into hampers to be sent to families in need. Well done to all!!

Premier’s Reading Challenge The PRC certificates have arrived and will be going home with your child’s report. Congratulations to all students who successfully completed the Challenge for 2015.

All holiday reading will count toward next year’s Challenge. Children often ask me if they have to read a book from the library for the Challenge. The answer is no. The book does not have to be from our library, but it does have to be on the PRC booklist. So check the PRC website to find out if the book counts toward the Challenge. Write down titles and authors of all books read in the holidays and bring it to school on library day next year. Happy holiday reading!!!

Kindergarten We look forward to our very special Graduation Assembly on Monday the 7th at 9:30. All parents and special friends are invited to attend.

Kindergarten classes will be having an end of year party on the last day of school (Wednesday the 16th). Please send a plate of party food to share. If you would like to drop in any hot or cold food, you can drop it in at 12:30.

Please make sure that your Term 4 invoices are all up to date. The Kindergarten gift to parents, Christmas concert costumes and the Zoo payment are all on this.

If everyone could have a look at home for any classroom readers they may have. We would like to get them all back and sorted out by the end of the year.

As always, we were extremely proud of our students who battled the heat and stepped up as the finale act in our Carols on the Courts extravaganza. To our army of ‘sewers’ – THANK YOU! Year 3 What a wonderful week we have had in Year Three!

The Christmas concert last week was a hit and the kids loved performing their song. We have started our Christmas craft and we are thoroughly enjoying being so creative at this festive time of year.

We have been lucky enough to be treated to the Balgowlah Boys Band this week and the children were grooving away happily to the wonderful music.

A reminder that the Year 3 music concert is on next Wednesday 9 December at 1.50pm in the hall. We look forward to seeing you there and showcasing the wonderful talent in year 3.



Year 4 What an amazing Carols on the Court we had last Thursday. Fortunately, we had the southerly cooling down the netball courts which were at least ten degrees hotter when we practised our singing. As expected from our year 4s, they shone like bright stars on the day. We are very proud of all our students and Ben added to the excitement in his hot Santa suit! Let’s not forget Mr Tier and Mrs Gourley who were obvious stars and entertained the audience with their angelic voices.

In HSIE, our students enjoyed their role play on Local Government and learnt what it means to be an elected representative. They learnt about processes such as nominating, campaigning, voting and counting votes. Furthermore, our students understand the importance of volunteering in helping our society to function properly. This



unit tied in well with the voting for our school captains next year as well as with the Vinnies Food Drive which inspired our students to support our community.

In English, we continue to use different forms of poetry to express ourselves. Using idioms, metaphors, similes, personification and other forms of figurative language in writing is lots of fun. Here is Jacob literally pulling Logan’s leg!!

With the extreme heat we had last week, we decided to share our air conditioner with the year ones and what quality time that was! Students read to each other and afterwards wrote the summary of the story or designed a new cover for the book they read. Thank you 1C for visiting us!



Year 5 and 6 To describe the end of Term 4 in Stage 3 as busy would be an understatement. The year 5 and 6 students at Curly have had enormous week with many activities filling our calendars. Year 6 students have been attending orientation days at their various high schools and getting an introduction to life beyond primary school. They have also been busy with rehearsals in preparation for their graduation ceremony next week. In the classroom we have been finishing up our projects comparing the environments of Antarctica and the Australian desert. Students have carefully managed their time to complete their research and present their information in original, creative ways.

Year 5 have also had a busy week with their leadership activities preparing them for their role as prefects of our school next year. On Monday afternoon Year 5 students nominated the following twelve students to run for the position of 2016 school captain: Theo S, Nic C, Henry B, Finley Y, Tahn D, Tim J, Laura S, Maeve C, Maddy W‐R, Chloe D, Lara H and Charlee E. The twelve nominees for school captain delivered excellent speeches to their peers from years 3‐6 on Wednesday morning. They all spoke well and demonstrated why they would make brilliant school leaders. We look forward to hearing the outcome of the school captain election next Wednesday at the years 3‐5 presentation day.

A big thank you to the year 6 parents for your contributions for our stalls on Market Day. Both the dumpling and tombola stall were very busy and both sold out by 6.30pm. Our year 6 stall raised over $1,000.00. Thank you again for supporting our school.
