Message from the Principal Selective High School Applications Students in Year 5 have been provided with a letter detailing information in regards to selective high school placement in 2017. Please be aware that all selective high school applications need to be completed online by Monday 16 November 2015. Late applications will not be accepted. If you require further information you are welcome to contact the school. Coffee and Play Our final Coffee and Play gathering for Kindergarten children commencing school next year will be held next week on Wednesday 21 October commencing at 5:00pm. It will include a barbecue and will be held in the area in front of the library. 2016 Class Placement In the near future we will be commencing the process of organising classes for 2016. If you will be moving from our school at the end of this year it would be appreciated if you could contact the office. Also if you have any special social considerations you would like the school to be aware of when planning classes (e.g. siblings close in age) you are welcome to submit these in writing to the Principal. The Principal and staff will not be taking requests for teachers for next year. High School Orientation Days On the morning of Thursday 3 December all state high schools will be holding their Orientation Days. Please mark this in your diary as it is an extremely worthwhile experience. State Athletics Five students competed at the State Athletics Championships at Homebush today. The senior boys relay which consisted of: Oskar M, Ewan B, Dylan L, Tom T and Fletcher G and Gor O who was competing in the 11 years boys shot put. We wish these boys good luck in their events and would like to thank Ms Sayers for training the relay team to this extremely competitive level. From the Deputy
Many excited students from Y2 to Y5 are looking forward to Recorder Band commencing in the hall, at 8.15am sharp, for 8 weeks tomorrow. Mr Brain Hayes will be their conductor during this time. It is anticipated that the Recorder Band students will perform at the Y1 and Y2 end of year Presentation Assembly early in December. These young musicians will form the 2016 Training Band.
Tomorrow AdvancedLife Photographers will take photos of the following groups of students in the order listed, commencing at 9.15am. A. Training Band, Junior Band and Senior Band. (Wearing full band uniform with black socks and black shoes
and having their instrument). As the Stage Band has some Y7 students involved they had a photograph at the Sydney Band Festival when they performed on a Sunday.
B. Stage Two Choir and then Stage Three Choir. (Wearing summer school uniform. Boys green shorts, yellow shirts, white socks and black shoes. Girls wearing their summer tunic with white socks and black shoes.)
C. Intermediate Chess group and Advanced Chess group in full summer uniform. D. Debating Team in full summer uniform
Thank you to the families who have indicated their desire to be involved in Family Portraits and who have booked in online with AdvancedLife. This new fundraiser being organised by the School Band Program is taking place on Saturday 24 October. There are afternoon places now available and if you are interested please see the flyer further on in this Curly Communications.
For those parents who drive past the school regularly, you would have seen the signs and banners recently erected outside the school. We welcome this Warringah Council initiative to help keep our students and your children safer on and around the roads.
Collecting various types of cards has been around since ‘Adam was a boy’. The cards may be about space, basketball, football and now most recently animal cards.
In an effort to support students, this week, teachers have been speaking to students about some basic rules /strategies / suggestions regarding the swapping and sharing of these cards. It was raised and discussed in our fortnightly Positive Behaviours Engaging Learners (PBEL) meeting, that as a way of supporting young students who want to trade or swap cards, we further explore the possibility for K‐2 students to have a designated passive play card area, in view of the teacher on playground duty. Parents need to be aware that while we strongly believe no student should have their personal property touched by another student without their permission, if students bring cards to school the class teacher and the school cannot accept responsibility if they are lost or stolen. In addition to this, cards should remain in bags during class time.

A date for your diary ……. Warringah Mall Food Court Performance – Thursday 5th November
Recorder Band will start tomorrow at 8.15am. Please ensure your child arrives at the hall by 8am so that they can get organised and ready to start promptly at 8.15am. All children should have received their music, music folder and music bag, which they will need tomorrow. Please also remember your recorder.
Thank you to all parents who have offered to help set up and pack away music stands and chairs. It is important that all parents volunteer to help with this, so that the setting up and packing away does not run into the band rehearsal time. If everyone puts their hand up, each parent should only get rostered on once a term. Please let me know as soon as possible if you would prefer to set up at 8am or pack away at 9am.
If your child wants to join the Recorder Band and you have not filled out a form, please come to the hall tomorrow morning at 8am and see Lisa James.
New Band Music Bags We now have music bags available. All Recorder Band children have been given a bag which they have been invoiced for, along with their Recorder Band fees.
Any current band member that would like a new ‘CCNPS Band Music Bag’, can purchase one from the uniform shop at a cost of $10. It is expected that eventually every band member will own a music bag.
An ex student has a Jupiter flute for sale ($400). Contact Lisa James if you want more details.
Band Photographs The Senior Band, Junior Band and Training Band bands will have their photographs taken tomorrow, Friday 16 October. All band members need to be in full band uniform including black socks and black shoes and have their instrument with them.
Band photos will commence at 9.15am with Training Band first then Junior Band followed by Senior Band. We understand that some parents purchased photos of the bands when they performed at the University of NSW Sydney Band Festival and this is the reason for not retaking the Stage Band photo.
All children need to bring their sports uniform to change into after they have their photo taken.

Chess Club School Chess is back in full swing with Beginner Chess tutoring on Monday with Herman, on
Tuesday for the Intermediate Chess Group and on Wednesday with the Advanced Chess group.
Details of the Annual after school Chess Tournament will be included here soon.
Advanced Chess students are invited to participate in an Interschool Chess Gala Day at Killarney Heights Public School on Thursday 29 October. The cost will be $11 per child and the first nine students to pay at the school office will be included in our three school teams. Transport to and from Killarney Heights PS will be the responsibility of parents. I will endeavour to put a transport schedule together, as per other tournaments, once we have the names of the students involved.
An Invitation for Students Interested in Chess Students who have a good understanding of chess are invited to attend chess coaching at the Harbord Diggers on a Monday night, from 6‐7pm for eight consecutive weeks. The cost will be $40 per child.
Enquires can be made to the chess tutor, Lev Aptekar on his mobile 0478 521 829 or by email to [email protected]
Jeff Ballinger, Deputy Principal
Day for Daniel On Friday 30 October 2015, Curl Curl North PS will participate in the Day for Daniel – a national day of action designed to empower our students to “RECOGNISE, REACT and REPORT” if they feel something is not right. Students will participate in lessons and activities on personal safety (including cyber safety), and are invited to wear something red. The Daniel Morcombe Foundation has released a FREE SAFETY APP, suitable for a range of personal safety scenarios for all family members. This includes: medical emergencies and conditions; accidents; excursions or sleepovers and overseas travel. For more information see the flyer further in the newsletter and visit: DanielMorcombe.com.au/APP
Class News
Kindergarten Kindergarten, well done on your sensible behaviour and investigating skills at the beach last week. You are demonstrating more and more maturity every day! The walk to the beach only took 20 minutes and according to some primary teachers, this is a feat in itself! Thank you for being so cooperative and lovely, we are very proud of all of you.
Keep up your reading at home and your questions about sea creatures. Over the term you will learn interesting facts about a variety of creatures so be sure to share your knowledge with your families. Perhaps you can visit your local library to borrow books about sea creatures you are particularly interested in.
Thank you for a great start to term 4 – keep up the fantastic work!
Year 1 As part of our ‘Schoolyard Safari’ unit, Year One students have been busy exploring the small and wonderful creatures that live in our playground environment. Using our ‘Code for Caring’ and our magnifying glasses we have been scientifically inspecting our small friends. To extend our learning and understanding of lifecycles we also have some very fascinating new visitors to our classrooms. They are creamy white in colour, have a long caterpillar‐like body and eight pairs of legs. Can you guess who our visitors are? Perhaps
you need a few more clues. Thanks to the enormous tree in our Eco Garden they have a well supplied diet of mulberry leaves. After they are fully grown they spin a silk cocoon, go

through metamorphosis, and in a couple of weeks emerge as adult moths! Have you guessed who they are? That’s right ‐ we are caring for silkworms in our classes and enjoying watching the lifecycle process first hand! Some silkworms have started to spin their silk cocoons already. How exciting! Thank you to Nate Newman in 1J who so happily shared all of these amazing creatures with us all!
Year 2 The Curly Year 2 kids had a wonderful time at the Gallery of NSW. They had a tour with the experts and discussed the images in each exhibition. The children were introduced to famous artists and were able to ask questions stirred by their curiosity. The children created their own artworks inspired by what they had seen. We look forward to continuing the inspirational work back at school in Creative Arts and English.
Year 3 The hall was bopping on Monday with 140 Year 3 children as they enjoyed perfecting their new dance moves. Even Mrs Baskin was grooving along to such popular tunes as “Gummybear” and “Gangnam Style”. We are looking forward to next week’s song and dance choices from the music DJ.

3T had a bumper potato harvest on Wednesday. It was better than striking gold! There was soil flying everywhere as the students enthusiastically dug for their treasure ‐ potatoes. It was mashed potato and/or chips for dinner that night!!! One student hoped her mum would cook Shepherd’s pie for dinner.

Year 4 It certainly doesn’t feel like Week 2 of Term 4 already. However, the plovers have decided to nest in the middle of the playground again (which makes playground duty so much more interactive for the teachers). It must be October.
I always quite enjoy the first week back. It’s nice to get into a working routine, and the kids are usually on their best behaviour. It’s very reminiscent of my behaviour if I want to go to the footy or some other equally “blokey” pursuit on the weekend. I’ll have a plan during the week to make sure I’ve earned enough goodwill. I usually offer to do all the jobs around the house that I pretend not to notice need doing most of the time. I’ll even clean the bathroom properly. I’m talking windex and maybe tackling the grout as well. It’s a sick game really, but all parties are happy with the outcome. We have a really clean house, and I get to get out of it.
In class we have been busy starting our novel study of Roald Dahl’s classic ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’. We are using our powers of persuasion and writing expositions. In maths we have been looking at volume and capacity as well as decimals and money. In science we have started studying the unit Material World which looks at the uses and practicalities of different articles of clothing and materials. In HSIE we are looking at the role local government plays in our local life, which I described to the kids as the people who disappoint us by cancelling PSSA after it rains a bit. In PE we have been busy enjoying learning a new game from our Sportspro coaches called smash hockey (it’s safer than it sounds). From afar it appears that it is a game of hockey, with each student armed with a stick that looks like an old prop from the show Gladiators (obviously they love this).
As you can see we have well and truly hit the ground running this Term. I must admit having all this variety at work each day is far more appealing than watching ‘Peppa Pig’, coming up with inventive ways to introduce vegetables into a toddler’s diet, or hiding my son’s Wiggles guitar.
The fun and learning never stops at Curly.
Mr Jensen, On Behalf of the Year 4 Team
Year 5 and 6 Year 5 and 6 are involved in robotics lessons this term. 6C had an amazing experience and learnt new programming techniques. We are all looking forward to buying a self‐driving car in the near future!

Volunteers will be needed to assist in running the activity stations as well as for set up and pack up. Please contact Jody Bayley via [email protected] if you can help and let her know your chosen timeslot(s). Running order for the day is as follows:
8am‐9am Set Up
9.10am – 10:10am Year 2
10.10am‐11:10am Years 3 and 4

Christmas Markets, 26 November (rain date of 3 December) In conjunction with the biennial Christmas Carols event, currently scheduled for 26 November, the P&C will be running a Christmas Market. Planning is underway and this will be a significant undertaking requiring many hands on deck to make the evening both fun and lucrative. We would like to get a collection of our lovely Curly‐spirited‐helper‐outer type parents along to a planning session on Monday 19 October at 7pm in the school hall. If you would like to be involved, please come along.
In addition to the stall‐per‐year format, we would like to open up to some local small businesses/cottage industries interested in selling their products for Christmas gifts.
Any questions, enquiries from interested businesses or offers of help, sponsorship etc should be directed to Jody Bayley via [email protected].
