The 2015 Lost N Lava Gathering Every Kid In a Park The Sawtooth Nation- al Forest is proud to help launch the Every Kid in a Park program, as part of President Obama’s commit- ment to protect our nation’s unique outdoor spaces and ensure that every American has the opportunity to visit and enjoy them. Starting today, fourth graders nationwide can visit the new “Every Kid in a Park” website to obtain a pass that provides free ac- cess to students and their families to all federally- managed lands and waters – including national forests, grasslands, wildlife refuges and waters. The pass is val- id for the 2015-2016 school year and grants free entry for fourth graders and three accompanying adults (or an entire car for drive-in parks) at more than 2,000 federally- managed sites. The Sawtooth National Forest does not charge an entrance fee. However, some developed recreation areas on the Forest charge a day use fee. The Every Kid in a Park Pass covers day use fees on the Forest. Other recreational fees, such as those at campgrounds, are Trail Ride The 5th Annual Lost N Lava Trail Ride will be held this weekend, September 11, 12 and 13 at the Barney Ranch in the West Magic area. Lead by Richard and Eric Barney, Lost N Lava Trail Bosses, riders can expect to have a fun weekend while enjoying the sights and sounds of beautiful country. The ride is $100 for the three days or $35 for single day of riding. This year’s event features the 2014 West- ern Music Associations (WMA) Female Art- ist of the Year, Kristyn Harris from McK- inney Texas, 11 Year old Thatch El- mer of Bear River, Wyo- ming, and 14 year old Brigid Reedy from Boulder Montana. All have been featured at the Nation- al Cowboy Gathering held each year in Elko, Nevada. Free daily perfor- mances will take place inside the community center from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Fri- day and Saturday. Evening concerts begin at 7 p.m. with pre-show beginning at 6:15. Fol- lowing each night’s concert, a jam session will be held at 2nd Time Around. A Lost N Lava kick-off dinner will be held around the campfire on Thursday, September 17th, start- ing at 6 p.m. with music, poetry, and potluck food for everyone to enjoy. Saturday morning the VFW Post 3001 will host a Community Breakfast between 7:30 and 9:30 a.m. in- side the community center. The first confirmed human case of West Nile Virus (WNV)insouthcentralIdahohasbeenreported. “Thefemale,inherthirties,washospitalizedandisnowrecoveringathome,”saidChristiSkuza,SouthCentralPublicHealthDistrict(SCPHD)Epidemiologist.“ThisisagreatremindertothepublicthatWestNileisstillaconcern,soeveryoneshouldtakeextraprecautions.” SymptomsofWestNileinfectionincludefever,head-aches,bodyaches,fatigue,nausea,vomiting,andsome-timesswollenlymphglandsoraskinrash.Moresevereinfectionsaremarkedbyarapidonsetofahighfever,includingheadache,bodyaches,disorientation,neckstiff-ness,andtremors.Symptomstypicallyoccur2to14daysafterthebiteofaninfectedmosquito. Themoreyou’reoutdoors,thehighertheriskofbeingbittenbyaninfectedmosquito.Precautionsinclude: UsinginsectrepellentcontaininganEPA-registeredac-tiveingredient,suchasDEET(parentsareadvisednottoapplyrepellantthatcontainsmorethan10percentDEETon their children). BerthawasthesecondchildofAntonandMaryBoesiger,emigrants from SwitzerlandwhohomesteadedinnorthernShoshone.Berthaattendedaone-roomcountryschoolhouseandgraduatedfromShoshoneHighSchoolin1936. OnJune5,1936,shemarriedWilburWhitehead,ahandsomeguitarplayerwhocamefromtheKansasDustBowl.Theyweremarried63yearsatthetimeofWilbur’spassing. Theystruggledthroughthedepressionerawithdadworkingatvariousjobstosupportthegrowingfamily.AtthestartofWWII,theypackeduptheirbelongingsandthreechildrenandheadedtoOakland,CaliforniatoworkintheKaiserShipyardsuntiltheendofthewar.TheyhadsavedmoneyandcamebacktoShoshoneandpurchasedafarmnorthwestofShoshone. Momwasahardworkerasahousewife,mother,irrigator,cowmilker,raisingchickenstobutcher,sellingeggsandraisingalargegarden,alltohelpfeedthefamily. In1960,dadhadadebilitatingfarmaccident.MomwenttoworkattheShoshoneNursingHomeuntiltheypurchasedtheWendellMotelandCoffeeShop.Atthetime,shebecameacook,waitressandhotelmaid,butcouldalwayssqueezeinagameofBridgeandGinRummy. Berthaissurvivedbyherchildren,LeotaHill,ofEagle,Ida-ho,MariannaMorris,ofMeridian,Idaho,andGaryWhite-head, of Kennewick, Washington; 7 grandchildren; and 6great-grandchildren. Shewasprecededindeathbyherparents,2brothers,MaxandGene;3sisters,Ida,Louise,andMarie;1granddaughter,Debra,and2son’s-in-law,JerryHillandJackMorris.
