A Hunt for Hunt Camp
Photos Doyouhaveoldphotos,newspaper or documentsfromtheWWIIyears?Hereisyourchancetoputthemtogooduse. The National Park Ser-vice isworkingonanex-citingnewproject toplanandreconstructoneofthe1940’s ball field from the Minidokacamp,knownlo-cally as Hunt Camp. TheMinidokaNationalHistoricSiteisinterestedinhearingstoriesandseeingphotosofbaseballattheCamp.Imag-esareneededtounderstandwhat the ball fields at the Camplookedlike.Somelo-calmenhavesharedstoriesabouthowtheysnuckintothecamp(!)toplayball.Lo-calresidentshavestoppedbytotelltheparktheyknowcommunitymembershaveimagesofthesiteintheirat-ticsorstoredsomeplaceelseinboxes.Thisisachancetodo a scavenger hunt and find someimagesandsharethestories. Rooster had lived in Fairfield for five years until moving away after being diagnosed with cancer. He and his significant other, Elena “Janie” Wolf, first moved to Oregon for a brief time and thenontoNewMexicowherehisfamilyislocatedbecausehedidn’t want to be a burden to his family here in Fairfield. Roosterservedhiscountyfor22monthsintheVietnamWar.He loved camping and all of his friends here in Fairfield. FrankreceivedhisBachelorofSciencedegreeinAgriculturalEconomicsfromtheUniversityofIdaho.Whileattendingtheuniversity,heservedasPresidentoftheTauKappaEpsilon(TKE)Fraternity.Frank’shobbiesincludedgolf,reading,settinghisprizedcrabpotoutattheirsummerhomeonWhidbeyIslandandwatchingcollegefootball,especially,theOregonDucks.HelovedwatchinghischildrenplaysportsandenjoyedcoachingLittleLeagueBaseballaswellasPopWarnerFootballfortheMantecaCowboys.HealsoservedasPresidentoftheMantecaHighSchoolSportsBoostersClub. Lucky guesses were slim to sometimes. Rules were rules.Ittaughtustocleanourpocketsandgetpreparedforthenextday’sclotheswearing. YesterdayIfoundapieceofpaperthathadgonethroughthewashingmachine.Itwasfadedandtorn.“Couldtodaybemyluckyday?”Ithought.“CoulditbeaJackson,aHamil-ton,aLincoln,oreventhefaceofaGeorgeWashingtononadollarbill?”Furtherunfoldingrevealednoneoftheabove.Itwasmerelysomegreencoloredpaperwithwritingonit.NowIwaspuzzled,“Whatwasonthatpaper?” WithevercarefulunfoldingofthetornpaperIfoundalist.Onthelistitsaid:removeairconditioner,cleangutters,gathercanningjarsandcheckonsealsandlids,wrappipesforwinter,cleantatersoutofcellar,changeoilinpickup,lineupstuddedtiresforrotation,getoutfallcurtains,getridofweedsbyshedandsomeothersIcouldn’tmakeout.Iguess I was puzzled because first of all I don’t have and air conditioner,Idon’thaveguttersonmyhouseandIdon’thaveatatercellar.Nowwheredidthisnotecomefrom?
