Tread On Cancer Accident Takes Out Power In Fairfield Last Thursday morning, July 2nd, a single vehicle accident took out a power pole approximately 3.5 miles east of Fairfield leav- ing residents without power for about an hour. Two men in their mid- twentys, one from New Mexico and one from Flori- da, were life-flighted to Boi- se with minor head injuries. Two dogs were also in the truck, one of which died lat- er of internal injuries. Cause of accident is being listed as falling asleep at the wheel. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Saturday night, July 4th, a Hailey man died when his car struck a commercial truck trailer on Highway 26. According to Idaho State Police, Jose Rosales-Zayas was driving eastbound in the westbound lane when he hit a truck driven by Grant Co- rey, 36, of Filer who tried to swerve out of the way to avoid the impact. Mr. Rosales-Zayas was not wearing a seatbelt and died at the scene, according to Idaho state troopers. Mr. Corey, who was wearing a seatbelt, was not transported July 11 at Gooding High School This Saturday, from 7:30 to 10 a.m., there will be a 5k Fun Run/Walk at the Good- ing High School to help long time Good- ing High School Cross County coach and scout leader, Vance McHan, with his battle against cancer. Vance has been diagnosed with a rare form of cancer that is affecting his bile duct. After several surgeries, he is now undergoing agressive Chemotherapy. All proceeds from this fundraising event will go to help with the expenses of those treatments. Donations can also be made to the Vance McHan Donation Account at any Zions Bank. You can register for the run/walk at good- ingrec.com - sports online registration. $25 per adult and $10 for children 10 and under. This fundraising event will also include a Pancake Breakfast by donation. Runners and non-runners are welcome to eat. Later in the evening, come help Pay It Forward for Vance at the Gooding Pool (336 Illinois). “Swim Under the Stars!” from 9 to 10:30 p.m. $3.00 admission (pool passes will NOT be honored). Rodeo, Arts in the Park, and Yard Sales The Camas County Rodeo will kick off a busy weekend this Friday, July 10, at 6 p.m. On Saturday morning spectators are welcome to watch the slack events starting at 10 a.m. After the Saturday night rodeo, enjoy live music by RoughDraft. This is a ICA & IMPRA sanctioned event. The Shoshone Arts in the Park will be held on Saturday and Sunday (July 11 & 12). This is the 28th year for one of the best Arts & Crafts shows in the area. The event includes an Antique and Quilt show, wagon and trolley rides, a petting farm, and a music festival with great local talent from the Magic Valley. Arts in the Park is held on the Lincoln County Courthouse lawn. New this year is a lawn mower race on Saturday evening. The Riding the Rails Lawn Mower Races will be held at the Lincoln County Rodeo Arena begining at 6 p.m. (gates open at 4). Tickets are $5.00 per person and $2.00 for Children 12 and under. The Schubert Theatre in Gooding will have another yard/bake sale to help the “Raise the Roof” fundraising project. This landmark building in Gooding is well on it’s way to becoming useful again, but it needs your help. Come take a look and help preserve this historical building. Also in Gooding, the Gooding Chamber of Commerce is hosting a Flea Market on July 11th and 12th from 9 to 4 at the Good- ing Valley Country Store. Melrose“Mel”CharlesOlson,61ofAshland,Oregon,diedathisparents’homeinMountainHomeonSaturdaythe27thofJuneafterafouryearhardfoughtbattlewithprostatecancer. ThegrandsonofaSwedishimmigrant,MelwasborninGooding,IdahoonApril15,1954toCharlesandDorisOl-son.LivinginHillCityheattendedCamasCountyschools,graduatingin1972. ThatfallhestartedinatOregonStateUniversity,ma-joringinchemicalengineering.Afterhissophomoreyearhe married Roxane Gaskill of Fairfield and they both at-tended OSU. Mel received his BS in 1977 and his Masters inChemicalEngineeringayearlater. Aftergraduationin1978,MelandRoxanemovedtoCincinnati,OhiowhereMelwasemployedbyProcter&Gambleintheprocesscontroloftheirpulpandpaperdivi-sion.Inthemid1980’stheymovedtoColumbus,OhioandMelworkedforAnatec,againinvolvedinprocesscontrol.TheydecidedtoheadbackwesttobeclosertofamilyandMel took a job with PCE Pacific in the Seattle area in 1988. TheymovedtoWhidbeyIsland,WashingtonandatthetimeofhisretirementlatelastsummerMelwasDirectorof Business Development for the company. His main focus atthetimeofhisretirementwasthegasandoilindustrywhichrequiredtravelthroughoutthenorthwest,theGulfCoastandAlaska’sNorthSlope.MelandRoxanemadeonemoremoveattheendof2014toa12acrefarminAshland,Oregon...somewhatofareturntotheirruralroots. Eventhoughhestartedoutlandlocked,Mellovedboat-ing, first with his sailboat “Webejammin” and later on his powerboat“HubbyWon”.HeandanotherfriendactuallydidsomenightsailinginCanadianwatersnorthoftheSanJuanIslands.HeandRoxanetook“Webejammin”ona3-weeksailthroughtheStraitofJuandeFucaandupthewestsideofVancouverIsland.Helovedtohostpeopleontheboats,whetherforaweekoranafternoon. WhenboatingbecametoomuchforhishealththeyboughtanRVandmadeseveraltrips,especiallyupanddownthePacific Coast. His favorite park was near Yachats, Oregon wherehecouldstillviewtheoceanwithouttryingtotravelonit. Anotherofhispassionswascookingandfriends,familyandstrangersreapedtherewardsofthatpassion.Hecouldmakea3coursemealfromthecontentsofanyrefrigera-toratanytime,sayinghelikedthechallenge.WhetheritwasaChristmasdinnerpartyfor30,avegetarianmealfor

theneighborsorjustabrunchforheandRoxane,Melen-joyedtheentireprocessfrommenuplanning,toservingtheplates. Hisotherlove,besideshiscontinual list of projects,werehispets.ThosewithhimwhenhediedwerePo-catandthedogs,Astro,Palandhisbestbuddy,Rowan. Mel and Roxane marked

their41stanniversaryonthe15thofJune. HeissurvivedbyhiswifeRoxane,hisparents,CharlesandDottieOlson,twobrothers,Clare(Karen)OlsonandDavid(Rita)OlsonandsisterMarie(Jason)Zinke,niecesCassandraandAmandaandnephewsAndrew,MatthewandJustin.Hewasprecededindeathbyhisgrandparents,Axel and Lela Olson and Milan and Marjorie Basinger and uncles, Harlan Olson and Ron Basinger. On the west end of the county, thecrewslidtoastopandlookedinhorroratthesightofpinkandpurplepedalsmarchingupthedrainage.Onelookandthecrewhadonlyonethought:wholetthedogout?,Houndstonguewasontheloose. Horsethief ReservoirOpen for Fish Salvage

HorsethiefReservoir,eastofCascade,willopentopub-lic fish salvage from Saturday, July 18 through Tuesday, October20. The salvage, which suspends fish bag and possession limits, is the first step in rehabilitating the reservoir to remove undesirable fish species, namely brown bullheads. Regional fishery staff investigated complaints of bullheads inHorsethiefreservoirinthefallof2014.Thegillnetsur-veydocumentedalargenumberofbullheadsofatleastfourdifferent year classes. These fish were illegally introduced into the reservoir by someone about five years previously. TheDepartmentwillbegindrainingthereservoironSeptember8thaftermostoftheanglingseasonisover.Thelifting of angler limits is a way to use most of the fish that currentlyresideinthereservoir. Totakeadvantageofthesalvage,anglersmusthaveavalid Idaho fishing license. With the exception of firearms, explosives, chemicals and electricity, fish may be taken with any method, including seines and dip nets. All fish must bekilledbeforetransportfromthereservoir. Illegal introductions of fish, including brown bullheads atHorsethief,areextremelycostlytoFishandGame,lo-calcommunities,andultimatelytolicensebuyersbothintermsofdirectmonetarycostsaswellaslostrecreationalfishing opportunities. “It’sfrustratingtohavetospendanysportsmen’sdollarsinthismannerbecauseofathoughtless,criminalactbyone person,” said Dale Allen, regional fisheries manager. Whenmanagedstrictlyfortrout,HorsethiefReservoirisavaluablerecreationalandeconomicassettowest-centralIdaho.A2011EconomicsurveyconductedbyIdahoFishandGameestimatedtotalannualspendingbyanglersas-sociatedwithHorsethiefat$4,505,000andjustover26,400fishing trips. Oncethereservoirisdrainedtoitslowestlevel,FishandGamewillapplyrotenonetothestreamenteringtheres-ervoirandinthereservoiritself.Thereservoiroutletgatewillbeclosedthedayoftreatment,andtherotenonewillnaturallydissipateintheweeksfollowingtreatment.Whenapplied to water, rotenone is lethal to fish but harmless to livestock,wildlife,petsandhumans. The ice fishery will be lost for the winter of 2015-2016 due to the illegal actions of a few. The reservoir usually fills byMayandtheDepartmentwillrestockitwithRainbowTrout and Brown Trout as soon as possible.
