New Demon has Cross to bearAFL

VETERAN midfielder Daniel Cross ishappy to mentor young Demons but be-lieves he still has the ability to make animpact on the AFL field first hand.

Cross joined Melbourne after 13seasons with the Western Bulldogs, withnew Demons coach Paul Roos looking tothe hard-working 30-year-old to helpmould his young squad.

After 210 games, Cross feels he still hasplenty to offer and wouldn’t change whathas worked for him for so long.

‘‘My job, like I’ve done in the past 13years, is to go about my business, trainas hard as I possibly can, do the extraswhile people are not watching and thatgives you the best opportunity to be in

the best 22 or the starting 18,’’ he said. ‘‘Itall comes out in your training and workethic and my mindset has never changedone bit.’’

This season Cross managed only 13 ga-mes and finished outside the Bulldogs’top 10 for the first time in a decade. Headmitted that being cut stung.

‘‘It was really hard for me to hear thatthe club I was drafted to (didn’t wanthim),’’ he said.

‘‘I love that club dearly and that willnever leave me, but I’m a Melbourneplayer now and fully committed to help-ing the club move up the ladder.’’

Cross said he slotted straight in attraining, where he quickly gained in-sight into how Roos wanted the Demonsto play.

‘‘We’ve certainly started with a lot of

grappling. It’s the first thing I did at theclub in our first training session,’’ hesaid. ‘‘Roosy’s really big on being hardaround the footy and hard to play again-st. His style was always big on stoppagesand that’s something with the game planwe’re going to be rolling out.’’

With the former Swans premiershipcoach on board, as well as 11 newplayers, Cross said it was a like a freshstart for everyone.

Another player starting anew is for-mer Adelaide midfielder Bernie Vince.

Admitting he initially wasn’t happy tobe forced out of the Crows, where heplayed 128 games, Vince said he hadsince embraced the change.

‘‘I’ve put all of that behind me and I’mrapt to be here and we’ve got some reallygood young guys coming through.’’
