SERMON SERIES
July 27-28 Practice Praying (Psalm 138, Luke 11:1-13)
August 3-4 Practice Listening (Psalm 49:1-12, Luke 12:13-21)
August 10-11 Practice Generosity (Hebrews 11:1-3, 8-16, Luke 12:35
-40)
August 17-18 Practice Growing (Hebrews 11:29--12:2,
Luke 12:49-56)
August 24-25 Practice Serving (Isaiah 58:9b-14, Luke 13:10-17)
August 31/September 1 Practice Making Room (Hebrews 13:1-8, 15-16;
Luke 14:1, 7-14)
The role of the Christian church is to cultivate and form people with distinctive habits of the heart or
practices like hospitality and generosity. Through these practices, the church cultivates people who (as
Craig Van Gelder says) “can risk being peaceful in a violent world, risk being kind in a competitive
society, risk being faithful in an age of cynicism, risk being gentle among those who admire the tough,
and risk love when it may not be returned, because we have the confidence that in Christ we have been
reborn into a new reality.” During the next month, we will focus on specific practices as a congregation:
prayer, listening, generosity, growing, serving and making room. We hope that you find joy in one or
more of these practices and that you grow in love as you are formed in Jesus’ way of life.

According to the book Missional
Church edited by Darrell Guder,
the “aim of the church is to
shape a people into an
alternative way of life”—to
cultivate people so that they
exchange their instruments from
swords into ploughs and spears into farming
instruments. In order to do this, the church must cultivate
and form people with distinctive habits of the heart or
practices like hospitality and generosity, etc.
Through these habits or practices, the church cultivates
people who “can risk being peaceful in a violent world,
risk being kind in a competitive society, risk being
faithful in an age of cynicism, risk being gentle among
those who admire the tough, risk love when it may not
be returned, because we have the confidence that in
Christ we have been reborn into a new reality.”
Counter to what the church proposed through monastic
movements of the past, the role of the church isn’t to
withdraw from the world, but to “keep the world from
distracting the church from its purpose of cultivating the
people of God.” That is why we, as the church, use
practices. Practices are important in the life of faith as
we grow spiritually.
Practices “form people in a way of life…because the
Christian gospel is at once belief that involves behavior
and a behavior that involves belief.” They form us in the
way of Jesus and that is a lifelong process. As the
Christian community lives out these many and varied
practices, it becomes a sign and instrument of God’s
reign of hope, peace, joy and love breaking into our
lives today. The purpose of the church, then, is to
witness to the power and presence of God’s reign
today through the faithful participation in Christian
practices. Grace and Peace,
Beth Warpmaeker
Senior Pastor
An important reminder when looking at church habits
and practices (and the reason our upcoming sermon
series is entitled “Practice not Perfection” is that their
indicators for success are not determined by
quantitative measures, but by “the quality of Christian
love experienced in the midst of common life and
ministry” In other words, the value of a
congregation’s practices is not evaluated by results
defined by society (status, power, influence, numbers,
perfection). Instead, the value is found in the growth
in love and in the process of involvement,
commitment, and participation in following Jesus.
The Missional Church in perspective gives further
definition to what the missional character of practices
are: “Practices must be understood not simply as
things we do to grow spiritually, but rather as
concrete ways in which our participation in God’s
mission is embodied in relation to our
neighbor….Spiritual formation or Christian
discipleship cannot be merely an in-house affair. We
must engage the curriculum of the world as we
expect to encounter God’s presence in the neighbor
or stranger. Congregations must make space for
deep engagement with the biblical narrative in direct
relationship to an engagement with the world.” This
means that we are to learn where God’s presence is
active outside the church and calling for our
engagement in mission.
During the next month, we will focus on specific
practices as a congregation: prayer, listening,
generosity, growing, serving and making room. We
hope that one or more of these practices resonates
with you and that you will find joy through
participating in God’s mission and by growing in
love as you are formed in Jesus’ way of life.

2019 - 2020
MUSIC FOR ALL SEASONS
ABENDMUSIK invites you to join us for our 2019-2020 concert series, Music For All Seasons.
Welcome the arrival of fall with bluegrass and barbecue! Our own Steve Hale and his band will lead a toe-tapping
evening of gospel and traditional bluegrass tunes, interwoven with the fascinating story of the circuit-rider preachers who
evangelized the American frontier. The program begins at 6PM in the Sanctuary. Top off that down home feeling with a
BBQ Baked Potato dinner before the concert. Dinner tickets will be available for purchase online in September.
Experience the winter beauty of music for Advent on December 8th at 6PM. Our talented Kinsmen musicians and guest
instrumentalists combine for this annual concert tradition. The centerpiece of the evening will be the choral cantata
”Winter’s Grace” by Joseph Martin, featuring music and readings with an Advent theme. Paired with music for handbells
and other instruments, we evoke the special wonder of the season. Join us for a festive reception following the program.
Promise of Spring is still a “work in progress” due to a date conflict for our performers. Please check the Events page at
kinsmenlutheran.org for updated information.
On May 17th, 2020 get ready for summer with the VOX ensemble of the Houston Show Choir. These amazing
performers sing and dance through an array of familiar pop standards. You won’t want to miss this fun -filled evening!
The concert begins at 6PM and will be followed by an ice cream encore!
How can you help???

Call Committee Update: The call committee seeking a bilingual pastor is happy to announce our resurgence. We have kept
Deacon Einstein Gonzalez in our thoughts and prayers, as he lives out his Baptismal covenant. The
baptismal covenant is a strong reminder and guidance to Kinsmen's congregation. Our baptism
places us on a lifelong journey that is characterized by our relationship to God, our relationship to
our family, and our relationships with our faith community, community, and wider world. Living in
our baptismal covenant means living a life of growth in the faith practices of discipleship. The call
committee continues to live in the covenant of baptism as well. We are actively in conversation
with ministers who will bring to life this Spanish-speaking ministry.
I would like to share Psalm 40:1-8 with you. Our committee listened to this passage as we returned
to seeking another pastor: “I waited patiently for the Lord; he turned to me and heard my cry. He
lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm
place to stand. He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and
fear the Lord and put their trust in him. Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, who does not look
to the proud, to those who turn aside to false gods. Many, Lord my God, are the wonders you
have done, the things you planned for us. None can compare with you; were I to speak and tell of
your deeds, they would be too many to declare...Then I said, “Here I am, I have come…I desire to
do your will, my God; your law is within my heart.”
We encourage you to seek us out and let us know your thoughts, concerns and prayers at this
point in the call process.
Yours in Christ,
Stefanie McIntosh
Background: In May 2018, the Kinsmen Church Council initiated the formation of a call committee for a
Spanish-speaking pastor. In June 2018, the Council approved the members of the call committee. After
many meetings and interviews, Deacon Einstein Gonzalez was called to Kinsmen in January 2019. In
March, he had to resign due to a crisis with his family in Venezuela. Later, the Church Council asked for the
Call Committee to reconvene and begin a new search. Mike Nash continues as the chair of the Call
Committee. Other members are Pastor Beth Warpmaeker, Linda Martens, Sandra Gutierrez, Julie Mulkey,
Adan Plata, Randy Bratsven and Stefanie McIntosh. Since April, The team has met three times to review
candidates and to review the criteria we are looking for in a candidate.

asking it is time to go to camp...She proudly walked
in to her table by herself. She has been attending
Kinsmen since she was 2 years old. She has never
done that. Most of the times, she is holding on and
hugging me when I have to leave her. She walked in
by herself this morning as well. Mommy is having a
hard time adjusting, but she is doing great. Thank

June 8 & 9Upbring/Krause Center – It is our tradition at Kinsmen to collect a “Noisy Offering” that benefits a
Mission Partner on the second Sunday of every month. This month’s Mission partner
is Upbring Krause Children’s Center.
The girls served at Upbring Krause Children’s Center are far more than a number, a label or a statistic. They have
survived extraordinarily hard circumstances. These girls are warriors and survivors. Each girl who comes through our
residential programs brings their own dreams, talents and abilities, and it’s our joy to provide them a safe place to grow
and thrive.
Many of the girls arrive at Krause after experiencing severe abuse or neglect. These courageous young women are
between the ages of 12-17, and they begin to grow and heal through in-depth clinical therapy, personal development
activities and spiritual care in a safe setting.
Girls stay an average of six to eight months and begin to feel a restored sense of hope in their futures – thanks to the
support of Krause’s staff and therapists specializing in Trauma-Informed Care. Often during the healing process, girls
discover special interests and talents and begin to live a healthy lifestyle. Many girls are either reunited with biological
family or connected with a loving foster family after living at Krause.
Krause Children’s Center Offers:
• Individual, family and group therapy
• Ongoing psychiatrist monitoring and medication management
• On-site medical and nursing care
• Therapeutic recreation daily
• Experiential therapy
• On-campus education through Trinity Charter Schools
• Life skills groups
• Variety of regular activities (community outings, arts & crafts, gardening, yoga, dance, animal-assisted groups and
more)
• Spiritual growth (individual and group counseling, church services and bible study)
Thank you for your extraordinary generosity.

Community of Hope - Learning to Listen with the Ear of Your Heart
For those who wish to serve the community in a unique and compassionate way, Kinsmen Lutheran Church offers training
through their Community of Hope ministry.
As a designated center for Community of Hope International, Kinsmen trains lay people to serve in pastoral care at
hospitals, assisted living centers, or anywhere they feel called. Over the course of 13 weeks, the training guides
participants through the tenants of Benedictine Spirituality—which center around balance, humility, and hospitality—as
well as teaching practical lessons on how to minister to others.
The next Community of Hope training will begin Tuesday, August 27 and continues through November 19. Training is
open to the community, and the course fee is just $50. An application form is due two weeks prior to the start of class
and may be obtained by contacting Lynnae Schatz at 281.444.3127, ext. 143 or [email protected].
Patti Suler enrolled in the course in 2015 and has been serving with Community of Hope ever since.
“I took it solely for personal reasons because it offered such an amazing opportunity for spiritual growth,” Patti says. But
she has gone on to serve in numerous ways, such as spending time one-on-one with older adults and leading worship
services twice a month in a unit for people with Alzheimer’s.
“We have an aging population, and the need for connection to God and good people is so critical right now,” Patti
says. “There is no church in any denomination where there are enough staff to provide that. So that’s where Community
of Hope comes in.”
After completing their training, lay chaplains choose for themselves where they wish to serve. Kinsmen currently has 38
lay chaplains who serve in hospitals, cancer ministries, assisted living centers and more. Along with their service, the lay
chaplains gather each month to build relationships with each other, debrief, and continue learning in what’s known as the
Circle of Care.
Simple acts of being present and humbly serving others is what Community of Hope is all about. If the thought of that
makes your heart beat fast, Patti encourages you to attend the training to learn more.
“We’re trained to listen with our heart,” she says. “We don’t offer solutions, we don’t offer fixes, we don’t tell people
what to do. The greatest gift you can give someone is to listen in a nonjudgmental way—to provide presence and support
just by listening. In this world, that is an amazing gift.”

An Update on the Capital Campaign:
As you may recall, a little over a year ago we were actively in the middle of the Kinsmen Capital
Campaign, sharing the exciting plans we have for Kinsmen and our future in the community we
serve. As a reminder, the campaign was initiated to support our ministry in becoming, as Pastor
Beth stated, “stronger and more relevant enabling us to serve more people in a deeper way.”
The In the Community … for Good campaign was launched to enable us to:
1. Attain financial health for our ministry
2. Improve the facility to serve our ministry needs, and
3. Implement our vision for the future, which can be summarized as growing new worship
communities by increasing generational and cultural diversity, and growing our discipleship
through focused outreach and communication.
During the campaign 180 commitment cards were returned to us with 168 making financial
commitments. The combined commitments and contributions received at this point are in excess of $1.37 million. Thank you for
your generosity!! Over the past 12 months, several exciting projects and initiatives have been funded as a result of the generous
contributions from our congregation.
This includes:
· Paying off the roof loan in full
· Installation of a water heater for the dishwasher
· Cultural training for Staff
· Increasing the Parish Nurse role and Hiring a Wedding Coordinator
· Hiring a young adult outreach leader
· Offering English as a Second Language (ESL), citizenship, and Financial Peace classes to jumpstart Spanish ministry before we
have another pastor in place;
· New signage in the north parking lot for KCA
· A new Church Management System database
· Purchasing new computers in the Sanctuary
· New cameras that have been installed in the sanctuary making live streaming and videos possible
In addition, funding has been approved for several projects that have been initiated but are not yet
complete:
· Repair and upgrade of external lighting
· Upgrade sanctuary and other electrical capabilities
· Upgrading building usage capabilities and security
· Upgrades to the Bride’s Room
To date we have received contributions of $695,659, which represents 46% of the $1.5 million campaign target. Again, thank
you for your generosity! We are considering funding several additional projects and initiatives in the near future. Your ongoing
contributions are essential to ensure that we have a sufficient budget to fund these projects.
Your continued support of Kinsmen and the mission we serve is greatly appreciated. If you have any questions about the Capital
Campaign or Kinsmen’s Long Range Vision for the future, please do not hesitate to ask us or Pastor Beth.
Peace,
Peter Abt, John England Bruce Best

Have you seen the new library furniture?
This project was Made Possible by Gifts to the Kinsmen Endowment Fund
THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY!
In January 2019, the library project was launched: $3,940 provided conference tables and chairs for the
Kinsmen library. This project provides a highly needed mid-sized meeting space for Kinsmen members and the
community.
The Kinsmen Endowment Committee is looking for other special projects to fund! Please submit your proposal
request to fund ministries that are above and beyond the Kinsmen Lutheran Church annual budget. These
ministries and programs must be connected in some way to the values, vision, and purpose of Kinsmen
Lutheran Church.
Projects to be considered would fall within the $3,000 - $5,000 range. A completion of a grant application
does not guarantee that it will be fully or partially funded. Please complete and return the Kinsmen Endowment
Fund Grant Application Form by October 1st for consideration in 2020.
The Grant Application Form is available on the Endowment Fund web page:

KINSMEN SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT Kinsmen Lutheran Church has a scholarship fund to provide financial assistance to Kinsmen members who will
be attending a Lutheran College or University. This year’s scholarship recipient is Kylie Zochert, a sophomore
at Texas Lutheran University. Meet Kylie:
I major in Dramatic Media and double major in Social Entrepreneurship. My future plan is to continue my
education with a Master's degree in Arts Administration
with high hopes in becoming an executive director for a
theatre company. Texas Lutheran University has taught
me many things besides just academics. TLU focuses on
building our character just as much as our resume. It is a
place where you will find life-long friendships with your
peers and make close connections with the excellent
staff and faculty as well. TLU may be a small school but
it makes up for it in big opportunities. For example, I got
to work for a touring Broadway show this summer as
well as participate in local volunteering events. Growing
in my faith has been a large part of going to a Lutheran
school where not everyone is Lutheran. We thrive off our
diversity of faiths and celebrate our differences and gifts
given by God. I hope to use my gifts in the future to
advocate for arts education in public schools that
are often times overlooked. I'm very thankful for the
people and opportunities I have received from my
college experience and I'm excited to see where they
take me.
Many thanks and blessings,
Kylie
