LET’s do composTing! April 2014

GREEN STUDENT

INITIATIVE

ANOUNCEMENT

As Spring starts, the activity in the FGSH community garden resumes and it is

also a good time to think about composting . During previous years, the

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Graduate Student Association

(BAEGSA), had purchased two big composting containers that were placed in

the garden (photo on left). This year our hope is to get several residents

involved in the composting activities.

That is the reason why we invite all the residents who may be interested to

attend our composting workshop next Monday, April 14th at 6 PM in the FRC.

BAEGSA will keep the information provided by the residents and will not share it with third parties. This composting program is part of the BAEGSA-FRC Green Student Initiative. To get daily updates on sustainability related issues around the world, please join our facebook page: “BAEGSA – Green Student Initiative”.

As Antoni Llongarriu mentioned in last November´s Green Leaflet,

“composting is a microbial process that converts plant materials to a

more usable organic soil amendment”. There are certain types of

materials that we can collect in our kitchens for this purpose, such as

vegetable and fruits leftovers, eggshells, coffee grounds and filters,

bread… The combination of these materials, plus air, moisture, and

naturally available microorganisms result in a process that ends with

the production of a nutrient rich material called compost. Our

purpose is to go through this process by collecting these leftovers in

our apartments, and

moving them to our

community composting

bins in the garden.

As a reward for those

residents who are

willing to actively

participate in this

composting program,

BAEGSA will provide

them with a small

composting bin (like

the one on the right) for

storing the food

leftovers at home and

transporting them to the FGSH garden. Make sure to register fast for

the workshop since only the 35 first registered residents who attend

will receive the free bin!

Signing up for the composting workshop is easy: send and email to

Oscar Planas at [email protected], and provide him with your

name, email address, apartment and neighborhood, and plot number if

you are participating in the gardening program as well. You will

receive an email confirming your registration.
