Your questions

”Open data is data that can be freely used, reused and redistributed by anyone - subject only, at most, to the requirement to attribute and share alike.”

Campaigning against liquor outlet licenses

Show on a map ◦ Licensed outlet locations

◦ Crime statistics and location

◦ School locations

◦ Population demographics (eg. income, age, etc.)

• Data shows: • low income earners are more likely to be obese

• High concentration of low income earners in central Washington DC

• Retail licence data - low quality food outlets in low income neighbourhoods

• High prevalence of smartphones amongst low income earners

Significantly higher admissions to hospital as a result of self harm

Before you go out and collect data…

… see what data is already available.

It may be more efficient use of your time;

Government data is based on actual activity (not subject to peoples memories, opinions, moods);

Can be correlated to give a richer picture.

Two key messages:

Low level of data skills in the sector

See the potential value in government data, but would rely on researchers to process and interpret it for them.
