Why Should We Have Procedures in Our

Classroom?

Procedures are a part of life. They allow complex operations to run smoothly with minimal confusion, low

Classroom and Academic Expectations

Classroom Expectations:

Prompt1. Be in your seat when class starts.

– 3rd tardy = detention

2. Turn in assignments at the beginning of the period on the day they are due.

– Late work will receive 60%.

3. Respond to the teacher bell within three seconds.

– You need to “Stop, Look, & Listen”.

Prepared4. When class begins, the first thing you

should do is go to your seat and do the “warm-up”.

5. Every day you should have your binder, your planner, your composition notebook, & a pencil.

- If you do not have a pencil, borrow one from the “new pencil” bucket. Return it to the “old pencil” bucket at the end of the period.

Prepared6. You will get 4 hall passes each semester to go to the restroom or to your locker.

– Students with all 4 left at the end of the semester will earn extra credit.

7. To be ready to go at the end of the period, you must clean your work area, gather your things, and sit quietly.

POLITE

8. It is ok to talk in class when…– You have been given permission– You raise your hand & are called on– You are giving a presentation– When you are doing group work

POLITE9. It is not ok to talk when…

– The teacher or another student is talking

– During a test– During SSR– The teacher says “no talking”

10. No profanity.

POLITE11. Clean up after yourself following a lab activity so the space is ready for students in the next period.

12. Stay out of unauthorized places in the classroom, such as:

• The cabinets• The teacher’s desk area• The projector table area

PRODUCTIVE13. Stay on task during activities or you will lose a lab privilege.14. You are responsible for all work you miss when you are absent, including homework, projects, classwork, & tests.

– You can find out what you missed when you were gone by asking a friend or the teacher, checking your planner, or looking on the class website.

15. Plan to stay for study club every time you miss class.

PRODUCTIVE16. Mondays are busy days! We will…

- Fill out a weekly planner- Pass back graded work- Fill in the assignment log

You should tape all work into your science notebook. You may need to double check your grade and use the work to study for test.

PROUD17. Always do your best work! Pay attention to neatness, spelling, and grammar.

– If work is too sloppy or written in poor ink I will not grade it.

– Always answer questions in complete sentences, unless directed otherwise.

PROUD18. Always turn in your own work! Do not let other students take advantage of your hard work by copying it. When this occurs, both students will get a “0”.

19. Label every assignment with a full heading and a title.

20. Keep our classroom a place to be proud of. Take care of it by keeping it clean.

Daily Procedures

Entering the Classroom Procedure

1. Enter the room quickly and quietly.2. Turn in any work that is due into the appropriate paper

holder for your class period on the back table.3. Get your composition notebook.4. Seat in your assigned seat.5. Read the information on the board.6. Write the date, title, and learning target in your notebook.7. Do the warm-up until instructed to stop by the teacher.8. If you finish early, wait quietly for instructions.

Tardy Procedure

Enter the classroom quietly

Put the blue “student permit” slip in the basket on my desk

Pick up the daily handouts and join in the classroom activities with minimal disruption.

Absence ProcedureWhen you are absent, find out what you

missed.

You will have 2 days for every 1 day you were absent to make-up any missed work.

Work that was assigned before your absence or long-term projects will be due on the day you return to class.

Questions & Comments Procedures

When we are having class discussions, raise your hand to be called on and actively listen to whoever is speaking.

Teacher will give specific instructions when students are to call out answers without first raising their hands.

Ask only questions that are relevant to the lesson.

Be respectful of all comments and ideas, even if they differ from yours.

Working in Groups Procedures

Work in your assigned lab group. Move classroom tables as needed per the class

protocol. Sometimes, students in a cooperative group will

have a task which will be assigned by teacher or determined by group members.

Example of tasks:- recorder- presenter- materials person- clean up person- encourager- leader–keep group on task

Getting the Class’ AttentionProcedure

• The teacher will ring the bell.

• The students will respond within 3 seconds and…

1) stop what you are doing. 2) look at the teacher. 3) listen for instructions.

Walking in the Hall Procedure

When we are walking in the hall (fire drills, writing lab, outdoors)

Stay with the groupWalk single file

Go quickly and quietly to the destination

End of the Day Dismissal Procedure

1. Hand in daily work, if needed.2. Put away lab materials as instructed. Make sure work

area is neat and trash is picked up.3. Put lab notebook on the shelf.4. When the bell rings, be seated and look at the teacher

(ALL students must be seated & quiet).5. Teacher dismisses class.6. Push in chairs and proceed quietly out the door.

Classroom Rewards• Freaky Friday

– Points are earned for positive behavior following classroom procedures and expectations, such as, all students beginning class appropriately or responding to the teacher bell correctly.

– 50 points each month earn a “Freaky Friday” on the first Friday of the following month.

Students Leaving the Classroom

Get permission from the teacher without disrupting class.

You must have a hall pass to leave the room.

You may not leave the first or last 10 minutes of class.

Bathroom UseThe best time for bathroom use is during passing

period.

You should not leave class to use the bathroom unless it is truly necessary.

You may use one of your 4 hall passes/semester to go to the restroom.

You must get permission and a signature from the teacher without disrupting class.

Only person at a time will use the bathroom.

Student’s Sudden IllnessTell teacher where you are going.

Go to the nurse or restroom.

Follow up with the teacher when you are better.

Note: You should not be “suddenly ill” very often.

Classroom VisitorsYou may smile and you may say hello if it

is appropriate and it does not disrupt the class.

Continue to work in class as you normally would.

Remember to make a good impression for visitors. We want to impress them with your fabulousness.

Guest Teacher

Be polite and respectful. The teacher is a guest so be a great host!

Continue to work & behave in class as you normally would.

I expect to receive a wonderful report from any substitute teachers.

Remember, we want to impress all visitors in our classroom.

Teacher Away from the Room

Step 1: Be seated and start working on the warm-up assignment as usual.

Step 2: Sit quietly, be patient, and use the time to work on other academic assignments.

Step 3: Contact another teacher in a nearby room.
