C E L E B R A T I O N ! We honored the school’s first 50 years with special events throughout the year and cut

the ribbon on our brand-new academic and athletics center. There is so much to look back on, and we are

excited to share more about the opening of The Mark Salkind Center and our 50th Anniversary Celebration

within these pages.

In 1966, the school started with seven faculty members, 22 students and a goal to ignite a passion for learning

that would last a lifetime. Through many growth spurts and changes over the last five decades, Urban has

retained that early commitment to sustaining students’ curiosity and building relationships while recognizing

their individuality. In November 2016, we were delighted to celebrate all that Urban has been and will become

as we welcomed 1,000 attendees to campus to honor Urban’s history over the course of our Anniversary

Weekend Celebration. At the same time, we were excited to begin our next chapter with the long-awaited

opening featuring a stunning tournament-sized gym, seven classrooms and gathering spaces that create new

opportunities for collaboration and connection in myriad ways.

So many Urban families, both past and present, rallied together to make The Salkind Center a reality, and we

could not be more grateful for your commitment to our students, our school and our community. The next phase

of our building campaign will raise funds to complete our campus by converting the current St. Agnes Gym into

a 300+ seat Performing Arts Center, fulfilling our Vision 2017 strategic plan goal.

The 2016-17 year was truly historic for Urban, and we hope you enjoy reading about our many landmark events in

this Annual Report. Our thanks go out to the extraordinary volunteers who give so much of their time and talent

to Urban. In addition to all of our Trustees, we would like to thank Parent/Guardian Association Co-Presidents

Renee Richards and Lexi Olian, Capital Campaign Chair Eve Niquette, Alumni Council President Kate Jessup (’95)

and Auction Chair Kim DiNapoli. Special thanks also are extended to our Annual Fund Co-Chairs Stephanie

Galinson and Tom Levine, whose leadership helped the campaign surpass $1.3 million for the first time in

our history.

We are profoundly grateful to all of our donors who supported Urban during 2016-17. As we celebrated our

school’s 50th Anniversary throughout the year, it was especially rewarding to look back at all who laid the

foundation of our extraordinary community. We look forward to Urban’s next 50 years, and hope to see you

at an Urban event soon.

O V E R T H E P A S T Y E A R , I F R E Q U E N T LY A N D F O N D LY T H O U G H T about Urban’s influence on our

son and on our family. A core value at Urban is to encourage self-reflection and self-reliance in its students; by my

observation, Urban is dedicated to making this core value a reality. Urban has helped equip our son not only with

the necessary skills for the academic and creative challenges he will face in college, but also with the personal

skills necessary to navigate the social terrain of college life in a distant city. The dedication of Urban teachers,

administrators and staff and their support of our students through the metamorphosis from wide-eyed and

energetic Freshman, to capable and inspiring Seniors, to fresh-faced yet exceptionally well-prepared college first

years is impressive. We, as parents, also benefit from that dedication and support.

I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with many enthusiastic, committed and fun parent and guardian

volunteers who have generously given of their time and talent. Special thanks go out to my fellow Executive

Committee members whose engagement and insight were inspiring and appreciated: Co-President Lexi Olian,

Treasurer Jaemie Ballesteros Altman and Secretary Lisa Auer. Looking ahead, the PGA has a strong leadership team

in place ensuring continued outstanding service to (and fun for!) the Urban community.

Two things the PGA undertook during my tenure of which I’m most proud are the launching of the UrbanReads

event and the revising of the PGA bylaws to reflect National Association of Independent Schools best practices.

UrbanReads, an event co-sponsored with Urban’s Alumni Relations program, invites current and alumni parents

and alums to read topical books by authors who have a connection with Urban and then attend an event featuring

the selected book and author. The inaugural event in fall 2015 featured Urban alum Frances Dinkelspiel (’77). In

2016-17, we featured alum parents Mary Wiss (James Powell ’14) and Arlie Hochschild (David ’89). Neither the launch

of UrbanReads nor the revision of the bylaws would have been possible to undertake and complete without the

support, time and dedication of PGA volunteers and Urban staff and administration.

I thank everyone at Urban for their commitment to the school’s core values, their work on creating a sense of

community and belonging, and their determination to stimulate intellectual curiosity. In my experience, being

active in the PGA—whether by chairing a committee, attending UrbanConnect meetings or volunteering at a school

event—gives you an opportunity to meet other parents and share in the Urban experience, and I hope you’ll join in.

All my best,

Renee A. Richards2015-2017 Co-President, Parent/Guardian AssociationJames Hill (’17)

THE URBAN ANNUAL REPORT 2016-17 | 98 | THE URBAN ANNUAL REPORT 2016-17

Urban’s history is filled with stories of our founding values, our dedicated faculty pioneering new ways of teaching and many groundbreaking innovations in the field of education. Here, we share a few of our school’s defining moments during the last 50 years.

URBAN AT 50:THE STORY OF URBAN

What is your favorite Cal Studies memory?ALLAN RIDLEY, FORMER SCIENCE TEACHER: The San Francisco Water Supply was the focus of the class. So we actually backpacked all the way to the snow in Yosemite, and we followed the water all the way down to the city, driving around, camping and interviewing people who controlled the dam…and then we’d go to the sewer plant and see what happened to the water afterwards. So coming to Urban was like out of the lab and into the world.

How do you impart Urban to your students?CLARKE WEATHERSPOON, DEAN OF EQUITY AND INCLUSION: I’ve had conversations with Mark about this and one of the things Mark said to me which I think is really true: there’s a difference between being the boss or being at the top of the org chart and being a leader. A leader is really someone that understands problems and listens to people and should care. And so when I teach my classes, when I talk to kids, when I talk to parents, I would like them to have that orientation around why they come to school here each day.

URBAN LEGENDS: FACULTY INSIGHTS

Over your time at Urban, what has remained the same?MARK SALKIND (’70), HEAD OF SCHOOL: This is a school that doesn’t rest on its laurels. It’s self-critical. It’s always reflecting on what we’re doing, why we’re doing it, and how we might do it better. And....when you think about it, that’s what characterizes Urban: that kind of surging, restless, creative energy.

DAN MURPHY, HISTORY TEACHER: In the ConLaw class some years back, we were in Judge Thelton Henderson’s courtroom. When I got back to school, a lawyer who was in that courtroom called up. He said, ‘Those kids asked amazing questions, what’s the story on this school?’ That has been true I think for my years at Urban. There is something fresh and real, a kind of engagement.

1966Urban is founded by a group of parents on Washington and Divisadero Streets with 22 students and seven faculty members. Urban’s early principles – to sustain students’ curiosity and engagement while recognizing their individuality, to use city and outside resources for hands-on learning, and create supportive relation-ships between students and teachers – all remain as core values of the school 50 years later.

1989Board of Trustees states in its Strategic Plan that Urban will commit to no less than 25% students of color. In the coming decade, Urban focuses its efforts on creating a more diverse and inclusive student body, and expanding opportunities for students to learn about and discuss issues of race, gender and culture. The school had a total of 174 students.

2013Urban signs a 95-year land lease with the San Francisco Archdiocese and St. Agnes Parish to build a new academic and athletics facility over the parking lots on Oak Street. Also, this year Urban receives a LEED EBOM (Existing Buildings; Operations and Maintenance) Platinum rating, the first school in the nation to receive this distinguished award.

1966 2016

1972The first block scheduling plan is instituted dividing the school year into six five-week blocks, with one morning and one afternoon class each day. Over the years, Urban has introduced other pioneering programs that are now widely emulated both in San Francisco and across the country, such as our integrated community service project, outdoor trips, field education and our 1:1 laptop and integrated technology program.

1994 Urban grows with a campus expansion that allows for 215 students and 30+ faculty.

1990Students work with faculty member Stephen Thomas to create the Intercultural Student Union, Urban’s first affinity group.

2000Urban’s 1:1 laptop program launches first for teachers, then in 2001 for students. This unique program continues to attract the attention of educators and scholars from around the world, including past visitors from China, Russia, South Korea, Canada, Australia, Singapore and more.

1973Urban faculty members take students on a bus to Baja for a six-week educational trip. The trip is so successful that it launched Urban’s unique, annual California Studies (Cal Studies) class.

2006The Board of Trustees develops and approves Urban’s Core Values made up of seven statements of belief that build upon the school’s 1981 statement of educational philosophy. The values serve as a foundation and guide as the school launches its strategic planning process, ensuring that it preserves and strengthens the distinctive aspects of its programs.

2016Urban opens The Mark Salkind Center, expanding our campus, and celebrates 50 wonderful years at the forefront of education.

Festivities moved to the Salkind Center

with an Alumni Basketball Round-Robin

Tournament with players sporting their

vintage UrbanWear. After the game,

prizes were awarded to winners and

alumni paid a special tribute to our

tireless champion of the Blues, LeRoy

Votto, to honor his retirement from

teaching and continuation as Urban’s

Faculty Alumni Ambassador.

The day’s events continued with

a ribbon-cutting and reception

to formally open the Alumni Blues

Lounge—the result of a fundraising

effort supported by 340 alums

responding to our special alumni

challenge grant that raised more than

$300,000 for the space. Yearbooks,

photographs and memorabilia from

Urban’s archives were on display

throughout the building highlighting

Urban’s groundbreaking history, while

50TH ANNIVERSARY WEEKEND NOVEMBER 5-6:ALL-ALUMNI REUNION AND COMMUNITY CELEBRATION

special faculty videos shared stories

of Urban’s core values in action.

Live music filled the air as everyone

enjoyed a performance from an

Urban alum band.

On Sunday, the campus was opened

to the entire Urban community, and

we were delighted to welcome more

than 700 alumni, past parents, former

trustees, faculty and staff along with

current Urban families for an incredible

celebration.

Mark Salkind (’70) opened the

event with remarks and a special

50th Anniversary video before a

performance by our own Urban

Singers. Supervisor London Breed

presented Mark with a proclamation

designating November 6 Urban School of San Francisco Day! Visitors then

enjoyed a performance by a jazz

sextet comprising Urban alumni,

faculty and friends, in the Salkind

Center Gym. Meanwhile, current

students led tours of the campus

and visitors got a sneak peak of the

Fall production, Spring Awakening,

or enjoyed a performance by the

Chamber Music Ensemble in the

Gumption Theater.

Later, a panel of alums shared their

career insights and discussed Urban’s

influence on their chosen paths.

Elsewhere, the campus buzzed as

community members enjoyed a

cornhole toss, face painting and

balloons on the Salkind Center roof,

student and alumni art displays on the

Page Campus and the UrbanX Labs

Open House.

We are so grateful to everyone who

joined us to honor Urban’s first 50

years. Urban’s close-knit community,

united in our core values, continue

to define the Urban experience and

we are excited to look forward to the

next chapter of our history. We hope

to welcome all of Urban’s extended

family back to campus again soon!

To kick off our 50th Anniversary Weekend Celebration of Urban’s past, present and future, we hosted a special day just for alums. The day started in the Page Campus backyard with a reception and dedication of a new bench, a gift from the Class of 1969, whose families took a chance on a different kind of school, one that continues to transform lives of its students.

THE MARK SALKIND CENTER

In October 2016, Urban opened the doors of our new academic and athletics center, featuring seven state-of-the-art classrooms, a new tournament-sized gym, and gathering spaces for the entire community. The Salkind Center has transformed our campus, and we are delighted to share pictures of the completed building with the extended Urban family!

THE ARTS AT URBANPHASE 2 OF THE BLUEPRINT FOR THE FUTURE CAMPAIGN: PERFORMING ARTS CENTER

“One student surprised me by doing a scene and they stopped and they said, ‘Uh, do you mind if I just switch to German?’ And I said go for it, and then this incredible waterfall of emotion came tumbling out of this person, who had been expressive before that moment, but once the language shifted, everything changed”.

FRANCES EVENS, Drama Teacher

The next phase of our Blueprint for the Future campaign aims to complete our campus with a new Performing Arts Center (PAC). By converting the existing St. Agnes Gym into a 300+ seat theater, we will support the drama department in staging more ambitious productions, accommodate larger audiences for both the theater and music programs, and expand our available performance spaces beyond our intimate black box Gumption Theater.

But the PAC is more than a theater – it will be home to classes, performances in every genre, and a wide variety of meetings and school gatherings throughout the year. Some of the PAC’s planned uses beyond drama productions and musical performances include:

The arts have always been an integral part of an Urban education, enriching our curriculum and playing a starring role in our well-rounded approach to learning.

• Chamber Orchestra rehearsals

• Theater Tech

• All acting classes

• Lab Band rehearsals

• Peer Ed Theater

• One Acts

• Affinity Show

• Parent and Student grade-level meetings

• Junior and Senior Parent college meetings

• Parent/Guardian Association meetings

• Student Film Festival

• Winter Art Show presentations

• Cal Studies presentations

“We juggle. And tumble. And those are essential qualities and attributes for getting through life: jumping through hoops.”

WENDY PARKMAN, Drama & Circus Teacher

THE ANNUAL FUNDThe 2016-17 Annual Fund raised over $1.3 million thanks to the incredible

outpouring of support from our community. The Annual Fund is critical in

balancing the school’s budget and benefiting all aspects of the school:

academics, co-curricular activities and most importantly, our teachers and

students. In addition, gifts to the Annual Fund make a visible difference toward

accomplishing and completing our ambitious strategic plan goals to expand

Urban’s accessibility, equity and financial sustainability.

2016-17 ANNUAL FUND VOLUNTEERSWe would like to extend our appreciation to our extraordinary Parent Co-Chairs, Stephanie Galinson and Tom Levine, as well as our outstanding Class Captains, whose outreach and leadership ensured the success of the 2016-17 Annual Fund campaign.

EDWARD E. FORD FOUNDATION 1:1 MATCHING GRANT CHALLENGE FOR BAY AREA BLENDED CONSORTIUMIn June 2016, the E.E. Ford Foundation awarded a 1:1 matching grant of $250,000 to the Bay Area BlendEd Consortium founded by Urban School, The Athenian School, The College Preparatory School, Lick-Wilmerding High School and Marin Academy. In order to qualify for these funds, Urban and each of our partner schools committed to raise $50,000 in increased Annual Fund gifts versus 2015-16 to meet the challenge.

We would like to extend our appreciation to the donors listed here who increased their annual fund giving to help us secure the match and help Urban remain a pioneer in education through our BlendEd program.

URBAN AT 50:

AUCTION

In honor of Urban’s 50th Anniversary, we hosted our annual auction in The Mark Salkind Center Gym on Saturday, March 25, 2017.

Our generous community of parents, guardians, alumni parents and alums made our annual fundraiser for financial aid a huge success! Whether your role was to attend the live event, to bid, to volunteer or to otherwise donate, we are so grateful to our community for coming together to support this important cause during our celebratory 50th Anniversary year.

Very special thanks to our veteran Auction Chair Kim DiNapoli, the hard-working Auction Planning Committee, and all the fantastic student and parent volunteers who contributed their time and talent for this momentous community celebration.

ENDOWMENT GIVINGBuilding a strong endowment is the best way to ensure that today’s students, as well as future generations, benefit from Urban’s extraordinary teachers, outstanding programs and diverse community. The principal from Urban’s endowment is never spent, but the interest earned on the funds provides a permanent source of income for the operating budget of the school. We are grateful to the following donors who supported Urban’s endowment this school year.

GENERAL ENDOWMENT GIFTS

Gifts to Urban’s unrestricted endowment enable the school resources where they are most needed.

URBANREADSIn honor of Urban’s 50th Anniversary, we held two UrbanReads events in 2016-17. In September, we welcomed Superior Court Judge and alum parent Mary Wiss (James Powell ’14), in conversation with Urban Librarian Sarah Levin, to discuss Urban’s all-school read Notorious RBG. In January, we welcomed alum parent, professor emerita of sociology at UC Berkeley and author Arlie Russell Hochschild (David ’89) back to Urban for a discussion with LeRoy Votto around her book Strangers in Their Own Land: Anger and Mourning on the American Right.

October Career Panel for Sophomores A group of eight alums came back to Urban to speak with the Sophomore class about their high school experience, post-high school journeys and the lessons learned along the way. This event is a precursor to April’s Career Visit Days for Sophomores.

Decade ReunionsMembers of the Class of 1986 met at Fresca in the Inner Sunset with LeRoy prior to our 50th Anniversary celebration while members of the Class of 1996 enjoyed a celebratory dinner at Rintaro. Many thanks to reunion leaders Sam Fielding (’86), Elizabeth Baker (’96) and Jason Kibbey (’96) for organizing the events for your classes!

Building Your Network Event with Peer SchoolsIn November 2016, we partnered with eight Bay Area independent schools for a networking event at the Flood Mansion. More than 80 alums attended from the participating schools and Urban parent Dan Nye (Maggie ’20) served as the keynote speaker.

Recent Grad ReunionThe Recent Grad Reunion in January 2017 brought 80 alums from 2012-2016 back to campus to reconnect with friends and faculty.

Holiday Happy HourOur fifth annual Holiday Happy Hour was held at Tofino Wines.

THE URBAN SCHOOL ALUMNI ASSOCIATION PROVIDES AN INCLUSIVE, ENGAGED COMMUNITY THAT REFLECTS URBAN’S CORE VALUES, INSPIRING LIFE-LONG CONNECTIONS BETWEEN ALUMNI, STUDENTS AND FACULTY

Our alumni community, made up of nearly 50 years of graduating classes spread across the country and the world, is a vital part of Urban’s unique culture and spirit. Last year over 500 of you came back to Urban, hosted student work place visits or attended an off-campus alumni event. Our students, faculty and staff are grateful for your continued involvement!

Special thanks to the many alums who also visited Urban, tutored students, interviewed prospective applicants, coached, interned and attended events. We are so grateful for your enthusiasm and involvement!

Alumni Speaker SeriesIn November 2016 our students and teachers welcomed poet and essayist Maggie Nelson (’90) to Urban’s Creative Nonfiction classes followed by a student-moderated lunchtime discussion. In December, producer and director Beth DeAraujo (’03), shared stories and answered student questions about her career in television and film. Colin Kimzey (’13) kicked off January’s Month of Understanding with a discussion about his work as a visual artist and Asian American campus leader at Stanford.

Special Month of Understanding EventAs part of our ongoing celebration of Urban’s 50th Anniversary, we honored the contributions and leadership of former faculty member and head of Oxbow School Stephen Thomas and alums Hung Dang (‘93), Natsumi Iimura (‘93) and Kira Zadow-Colley Greer (‘95). Their pioneering work on equity and inclusion in the early 90s helped students and faculty come together and laid the ground work for Urban’s affinity groups and Month of Understanding.

SOPHOMORE CAREER VISIT DAYSIn April 2017, our Sophomores had the opportunity to visit alums and other community

members at their workplaces in visits organized by theme. The purpose of this

program is to get our young students outside the walls of Urban, open their eyes to

possibilities, and see that there may be connections between their current interests

and passions and their future selves.

We are so grateful to the 45 alums who made this unique learning

opportunity possible!
