Farm Urban’s
Future Food Challenge
Farm Urban is a social enterprise started by bioscientists, Paul Myers and Jens Thomas, from the University of Liverpool. We take science fresh from the lab to link leading research with local food production in the heart of the city. We
specialise in aquaponics - growing fish and plants together - using cutting-edge
technologies, which promise to revolutionise how we produce food in urban spaces.
But we know that tech alone is not enough. Real change needs to engage hearts and minds. Our hands-on, immersive learning programmes aim to inspire people to join us in the challenge to sustainably feed our growing cities through the 21st century and beyond.

The startup team, with a little help from Farm Urban will help to deliver our aquaponics workshop to their peers, sharing what they have learnt on their journey.
Peer-led workshops
At the end of the 12 weeks, each startup team attends the final competition, an exhibition of their work and the chance to pitch their product.
Competition Day
Over 12 weeks, students will form a startup, design and build their own aquaponics system and develop and business and brand around their product.
12 Week Challenge
A one-day extravaganza at the University of Liverpool, with aquaponics, business masterclasses and scientist speed-dating.
Launch Day
Our TEDx talk delivered to Years 9 -11. Year 9 students will be invited to apply for the 12 week programme. Each school will form a team of 12.
Schools from across the city are invited to take part in our Future Food Challenge. This after-school programme aims to inspire young people to do science and enterprise differently, through a highly practical, problem-solving based approach to learning.
Year 9 students apply to form their own startups, design and build an aquaponic food system (having learnt exactly what aquaponics is!) and create a brand and business canvas around their product.
At the end of the 12 weeks the final competition takes place at our city centre agri-lab, where teams will pitch their product and compete for the grand prize.
