Church of the Ascension 4th Sunday of Lent March 11, 2018

CHRIST THE SERVANT - MINISTRY OF CARE

How are you living the command to “DO UNTO OTHERS”? Our goal in Ministry of Care is to live out the corporal and spiritual works of Mercy. We strive to show God’s love and give it away to others. We want people to know Jesus through our actions, being Him in our world. Love of God and love of neighbor are inseparable. We believe that every member of our Church is called to do service and we strive to have opportunities available and easy for them to make this as much a part of their life as celebrating the Eucharist. As a ministry we want to do as much as we can to make it so easy for our parishioners to serve that it is easier to do service than not and strive to make our service family friendly. We believe Christian Service is about more than care for another’s needs. It is about recognizing the image of God in others through our service. It is about allowing our service to open our eyes to God Himself, and fall more deeply in love with Him. We also strive, always, to avoid harm in the course of doing good. We make it a priority to avoid making ourselves feel good while making others feel needy or lose their dignity. The work that the Ministry of Care does can be summarized by this verse, Matthew 25:40, “Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.” We, as Catholic Christians, strive to honor and respect all human beings regardless of socioeconomic status, race, age, stage of development, language, culture, or beliefs. On a fundamental level our mission is truly to serve. By working to connect those in need, community partners, and volunteers into a dynamic network, we strive to be the hands and feet of Christ at Ascension. Mt 5:16 Your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father. Mt 25:40 Whatever you did for the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me. Go onto kcascension.org and click on “Get Involved” then “Service Opportunities” or “Get Support” and read through the many different areas we serve that we have available. Or check “Quick Links” for “Current Needs” every week. And we are always ready to listen to new ideas! Contact Jean in the office, [email protected] for more information. How can we ever thank God for a gift like that? God does not ask us to sacrifice our own precious firstborn, but He does ask that we are grateful and generous with our God-given gifts. And participating in a CRHP retreat is a great way to make a very large parish feel much smaller, whether you have just recently joined Ascension or have been a member of the parish for years. Register early (space is limited). Visit http://www.mycrhp.com/US/KS/ARCH/ascension/ to learn more and register for the retreat. Have questions? AMBASSADORS FOR CHRIST LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS

Ambassadors for Christ is a new ministry at Ascension established by the Evangelization Committee. Our mission is to accomplish an initial step of Evangelization by welcoming all parishioners and non-parishioners to our parish events. You may have seen us recently in our bright, yellow aprons at the Parish Mission. It was a wonderful kick-off for our mission, but there are many events coming up and we need your help creating a warm, welcoming environment at Ascension! Ambassadors for Christ are: OUTGOING-it is our job to meet many new people! FLEXIBLE-we greet people, stack chairs, usher, carry plates, whatever is needed. JOYFUL-our goal is to make others feel welcome through our smiles and friendliness. IN LOVE-with Our Lord, Our Faith, and Our Church. If this describes you, and you are willing to attend Ascension events which can occur at all times of the day and evening, please join us! For more information and to join contact Kim Sutton at [email protected]. “So we are ambassadors for Christ, as if God were appealing through us.” 2 Corinthians 5:20

UPCOMING EVENTS (Continued) / VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

STATIONS OF THE CROSS AND TRE ORE on GOOD FRIDAY March 30, 11:30AM Church PLEASE JOIN US FOR TRE ORE on GOOD FRIDAY. Tre Ore or “Three Hours” refers to the three hours that Christ hung on the Cross on that first Good Friday. We will begin with Stations of the Cross at 11:30am, and Tre Ore will be from Noon to 3:00pm, preceding our 3:00pm Good Friday Service. COME WHEN YOU CAN, LEAVE WHEN YOU MUST. Ascension’s Tre Ore service is a form of Devotion to Christ in honor of His three hours of Agony for us. It includes the Way of the Cross at 11:30am, Reflections on the Seven Last Words of Christ, along with appropriate hymns, music and periods for silent prayer. Feel free to bring your Bibles, and any other devotional items that you may like to enhance your prayer time. Let us gather at the foot of the cross and allow Christ’s seven last statements from the Cross speak directly to our hearts.

CALLING ALL KNIGHTS WIVES AND KNIGHTS WHO LIKE TO BAKE!! Our annual Fish Fry's have started. The desserts we serve are (and I have to say it) probably the most popular menu item because of the preparation effort that is put into them by all of you.

We are fortunate again that Johnette Martin and Raena Merlotti will serve as the coordinators for desserts.

We are asking all wives, Knights who like to bake, and especially the officers’ wives to prepare (or buy) desserts for the Fish Fry's remaining this year on Fridays: March 16 and 23.

If you are interested in doing so, please contact Johnette Martin at either [email protected] or 913-481-8663.

TALKING TO KIDS ABOUT LENT

While having Sunday dinner one of my daughters looked in panic at her chicken burrito bowl and said, “is it okay that we are eating meat for dinner? I thought we could not do that on Sundays.” Our son interjected, “No it is on Wednesdays and Fridays!” This launched a lengthy conversation on what Lent was, why we choose to give things up and what days we do it. So, I went to a source to get facts and this is what I found in a letter from the U.S. Council of Bishops from 1966 on seasons of penance:

Spiritual Extra Credit Giving up something or not eating meat is more of a starting point. Ideally, we should be doing some kind of charitable service or caring for people in need like the sick, the homeless, the poor, or the imprisoned. Why? Because Jesus said so. He said that when we get to heaven, he is not likely to ask how often we failed to abstain from meat on Fridays during Lent, (okay I am grossly paraphrasing!) but rather that we will be judged for what we did for the least of God’s people. In other words, do not get distracted in rules about food, go help someone!

By Ray Martin

Because Jesus did. Most of our Catholic traditions point back to something that Jesus said or did. The first Sunday of Lent is marked with the Gospel account of Christ going into the desert for 40 days to fast and pray. This is when he was tempted and he did this prior to starting his public ministry which was the major season in his life that led to his passion and crucifixion. Unlike Jesus, we all have sin in our life. We need to heal our relationship with God. Lent leads to the biggest celebration of the Christian calendar, Easter.

What Do We HAVE To Do?

We have a commitment as active Catholics to go to Mass each week and on special feasts. If our relationship with God has broken down we should clear that up through the Sacrament of Reconciliation, but that is really the extent of “the rules”. The hope is that we make this a special season of penance, reflecting on where we need to make changes in our life so that we can get closer to God and fully celebrate Easter with our church family. Many Catholics in the U.S. follow the old traditions of our church ancestors who gave up meat on Ash Wednesday and Fridays during Lent. You do not have to, but it is a tradition. The Bishops say that meat used to be more of a luxury than it is today where it is pretty common, so if giving up meat is not a big deal to you, then they suggest you find something else to do or give up. If people have special circumstances especially when it comes to their diet, then they should not feel obligated to participate in abstinence or fasting. They should use their best judgement. Again, the goal is to make a day like Friday a special day where we think more about Jesus and how he died for us.

Why Does The Church Pick Certain Days To Be More Charitable Or Give Something Up? Ash Wednesday was chosen because it is the “opening day” of the Lenten season. We give up meat on Fridays because Jesus died on a Friday. The Bishops caution against being high and mighty in your piety if you do follow the Church traditions to a “t”. It is not a law and it is unfortunate to judge others who do not choose to participate in the same way as you do during Lent. Ultimately, there are many wonderful ways we can give God glory by serving and volunteering, especially for the needy in our communities.

From Death to New Life

Fourth Sunday of Lent Saying, Doing, or Being? St. Paul tells us in his letter to the Ephesians that we are saved through grace: God's actions of sending his Son to die for us, and raising Jesus from the dead show the love God has for us. It comes entirely from God. We are saved by our faith in Jesus, but even that faith comes from God. So when Paul says that no one can boast about being saved, he means that we can't add up our good deeds like reward points for heaven. He also means that we can't brag about our faith because we can recite the creed or answer an altar call. So if being saved is not a matter of saying the right things, or doing good deeds, what is it? The answer comes from the gospel. Jesus tells us that he will be lifted up, or crucified, so that we can believe in him and have eternal life. Notice he doesn't give a list of facts about God that we are required to believe. When we "believe in" someone, we put our love and trust in that person. We want to be with that person as much as we can. We know that we are loved and so respond by giving love. Our response of love is not just a happy feeling. It inspires us to stop being selfish and start noticing that others need our help. Jesus describes it as living in the light: we are not ashamed to help someone, forgive someone, or comfort someone. While we do not force our faith on others, we don't hide it either. Our life is in the light, open to anyone who wants to see what God has done for us. That brings us back to the question about salvation: it is not something we do or say. It is what God does for us. Our response of faith is also his gift. So when we recognize all that God has done for us and believe in his Son Jesus, the Spirit will guide us to live that faith and share it with others.

MOTHERS OF YOUNG CHILDREN

Do you have interest in joining other young mothers in fellowship, prayer and strengthening your faith? We are here for you, mama! The Mother’s of Young Children would love to have you join us. For more information, please contact Anna Schuster at 785-541-1154 or [email protected].

BASKETBALL MEN’S (AGE 21+)

For those who participate in Men’s Basketball on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 8:30pm-10:30pm in the school gym, this group is limited to adult parishioners who are 21 years of age or older. Children and minors are not allowed in the gym or school during this scheduled gym time as supervision is minimal.

OUR COMMON HOME MINISTRY Help stop waste violations at Ascension! Please visit RecycleSpot.org for a list of locations where you can discard any type of item. Please read the signage on the dumpsters when you are using them for church purposes. Our trash and recycling company is very specific about what can and what cannot be picked up. Illegal waste items (recently dressers, toilets, mattresses and other large items) are regularly left in or near Ascension's dumpsters that our waste company does not pick up. These items fill up our dumpsters and legitimate trash does not fit. This causes the church to arrange and pay for a special pick up to remove. If you see someone leaving illegal items, please remind them that the dumpsters are for church use only.

Mark will be establishing the Guild of Saint Joseph, training the Nicaraguan men carpentry and construction skills to help them better provide for their families. Men of Nativity are collecting used or new power tools...carpentry, metal working and construction tools...or cash/check donations to support Mark and his family in their commitment to ministering to the poor in San Marcos. Any and all tools are needed. Pickup of large equipment is available by appointment. Questions can be sent to Jim Kafka at 816-215-2015 or [email protected]. RESPECT LIFE Colonialism What do you call it when Western elites attempt to foist abortion on native African cultures? At the United Nations, two women squared off over this issue: one a Danish abortion advocate, the other African scientist Uju Ekeocha (founder of Culture of Life Africa-an organization dedicated to defending African values , including the sanctity of life, the honor of motherhood and the dignity of family life). Their opinions expose the deep clash of civilizations across the globe: the culture of life versus the culture of death. The Dane admitted she was “a bit provoked” by Ekeocha’s claim that Western countries are once again engaging in colonialism. The Dane announced that African women should decide for themselves what to do with their bodies and whether to have abortions; Ekeocha’s response was quick and direct: “Culturally, most of the African communities actually believe, by tradition, by their cultural standards, that abortion is a direct attack on human life.” “So for anybody to be able to convince any woman in Africa that abortion...can be a good thing, you first of all have to tell her that what her parents and her grandparents and her ancestors taught her is actually wrong. And that Madame, is colonialism.”

Sadly western do-gooders do not listen. Their ultimate goal is the drastic reduction of children born to poor Africans. Following the U.S. government’s reinstatement of the pro-life Mexico City Policy, Ekeocha noted that other Western governments from Canada to Holland raised money not for food in Africa, or water or education but for “..so-called safe abortions.” Routinely, African cultural values are aggressively pushed aside ---which is why Uju Ekeocha calls fundraising for African abortions “cultural” and “philanthropic imperialism.”
