DIAPER DRIVE August 17-18 Gathering Area

Bring diapers August 17-18! Please support our Church of the Ascension Diaper Drive. Drop off packages of diapers in the gathering area before all Masses. This drive benefits Catholic Charities Emergency Assistance Centers beyond Johnson/Wyandotte counties, where no aid is given from the Kansas City diaper bank.

All sizes needed. Opened packages accepted. If your child has outgrown a size, we will gladly take the leftover diapers.

•Diapers are often on sale at big box stores or amazon.com. •Invite your friends & family to drop some by next weekend.

Diapers do not qualify under any assistance program - many families must choose between buying food, paying rent, or buying diapers. Babies are often left in soiled diapers much longer than is sanitary or humane. American Heritage Girls Troop 3130 will have a service day to wrap donated diapers into bundles of 25 for fair and easy distribution by Catholic Charities to families at non-KC (Emporia, Topeka, Lawrence, Atchison, Leavenworth, mobile bus north) EACs.

Supporting our diaper drive says YES to life. Supporting our diaper drive is a work of mercy!

Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Are You Talking to Me? In today's Gospel Jesus talks about being prepared, using the parable of the servants waiting for their master's return from a wedding. Parables usually have a surprise twist and this one is no exception. Jesus pictures the master coming back at a late hour and finding the servants ready for him. The master is so pleased that he begins to wait on the servants--he serves them a meal. (I can almost hear the disciples saying, "No way!") Peter is a man who is not afraid to speak up or ask a question. That may be one of the reasons Jesus made him the head of the apostles. Perhaps Peter was thinking, "Surely we will be prepared when Jesus comes again. He must be talking about the rest of the people." When he asks Jesus whom the parable is meant for, Jesus ignores him! At least it seems that way at first. Jesus expands on the theme of readiness by describing the servant who took advantage of the master's absence--he will be punished severely. To answer Peter's question, Jesus warns that the servant who knew his duties would be punished more than one who was ignorant of those expectations. Peter and the disciples should have seen themselves as the servants who knew what was expected. That warning is one for us to hear also. We may look down on non-Christians or wonder if they will get to heaven. But the Lord doesn't expect as much from those who don't know God. Instead of judging them, we would be better off looking at ourselves. Am I serious about my faith, serious enough to show it in my actions? Has my good example ever brought a non-believer to the Church? If I can see Jesus in someone who doesn't know the Lord, the respect I show that person could draw them to believe. There are examples of this even in your own parish. If you have been in the parish for many years, you could be expected to notice a newcomer more readily. How do you welcome them? Do you get so comfortable with your friends that you don't think about reaching out to a visitor? I think Jesus would expect those of us who feel at home in our church to make an effort to bring new members into our circle. "So how much does Jesus expect of me?" The answer could be in how well you know Jesus.

RESPECT LIFE MINISTRY Standing Up On July 25, 2019, a pro-life medical coalition (*members listed below) issued a public statement condemning recent published comments by the “Group of Six” (Amer. Academy of Fam. Phys.; Amer. Academy of Peds.; Amer. College of Phys.; Amer. Coll. Of Obs and Gyns.; Amer. Osteopathic Assoc. and Amer. Psychiatric Assoc.). The Group of Six comments champion abortion; opposition to conscience protections for health care workers; and opposition to recent state laws protecting women and the unborn. The pro-life medical coalition specifically called on the Group of Six “to acknowledge the scientific fact that every human person’s life begins at fertilization and to recommit to the ancient medical ethics principle of “first do no harm’’. Michelle Cretella, MD, speaking for a member of the pro-life medical coalition said: “The Hippocratic Oath logically forbids the intentional killing of human life from conception to natural death. Death is not a state of health; killing is not caring. Abortion, assisted suicide and euthanasia are not health care.” The pro-life medical coalition encourages the Group of Six to recognize the inherent right to life of all human persons regardless of any condition they may have.

(Sources: Coalition Press Release on 7/25/19 and Public Written Statement; Statements by Group of Six on 5/28/19 et al). (*The pro-life coalition members are: Christian Med. Assoc.; Amer. Assoc. of Pro-Life Obs & Gyns; Amer. College of Peds; Cath. Med. Assoc.; Coptic Med. Assoc. of No. Amer.; Nat’l Assoc. of Cath. Nurses and the Nat’l Cath. Bioethics Center).

CALLED AND GIFTED WORKSHOP September 14, 8:30AM Cure of Ars, Leawood, KS. A Called and Gifted Workshop, Discover God’s Call for Your Life, will be held on Saturday, September 14, from 8:30am-4:00pm in the Fr. Burak room. God is calling you to a unique purpose in life, a work of love that only you can do. You have received gifts in Baptism and Confirmation through which God intends His love to reach others. Discern your spiritual gifts and begin to discern God’s call for your life. Come to the workshop and discover these gifts in you! (This workshop is limited to 110 participants). Registration and details: https://www.cureofars.com/called-gifted-workshop.

MARRIAGE MINUTE August 11 I promise to be true to you in good times and bad. We never know when the “bad times” will come, but like Jesus reminds us in this weekend’s Gospel, we can use the “good times” to get prepared!

Learn to describe and share feelings, so that when difficult situations arise, you can share the accompanying feelings in a clear and comfortable manner.

Practice forgiveness. Having a good process in place to ask and grant forgiveness not only works through the problem, but gives you deeper insight into your spouse and confidence you can face any problem.

Learn what makes your spouse feel loved, cherished, and respected. This way, when you are short on time and energy, you can focus on just those things that mean the

    most to your spouse.

You can learn all these at Every Day in Love! www.archkck.org/everyday.
