AUTHENTIC TAMALE SALE AND DINNER April 21, 5:30PM Parish Hall

The “Sister Parish” ministry is a joint effort with All Saints and Ascension Parish. The mission of this ministry is to share our faith, service and fellowship through the diversity of our cultures. We are planning a “tamale dinner” and sale on April 21 from 5:30pm-7:30pm. The tamales will be made fresh by the women from All Saints Parish. You can preorder and pay for the tamales for $15.00/dozen. Or you can attend dinner that night in the parish hall. Adults will be $8.00 and kids $5.00. Proceeds will go to the All Saints Youth Group and Church maintenance. To sign up to help put on the dinner (set up, serving and clean up) or to pre-order tamales, please go to kcascension.org then Quick Links/Current Volunteer Signups and look for tamale dinner. RESPECT LIFE QUOTES “Pray that America will wake up to the tragedy of children being killed through abortion every day in this nation.”

Franklin Graham "Abortion is a uniquely intimate form of violence – but violence with bitter public consequences."

Archbishop Charles Chaput Jan 18, 2018 "I know without a doubt, that abortion is a violent act of murder and exploitation. And I know that our responsibility is to work and pray without ceasing for its end."

Denver Archbishop Samual J. Aquila - January 22, 2013 "Abortion kills twice. It kills the body of the baby and it kills the conscience of the mother. Abortion is profoundly anti-women. Three quarters of its victims are women: Half the babies and all the mothers."

~ Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta ~ “I’ve noticed that everyone who is for abortion has already been born.”

From Death to New Life

Second Sunday of Easter Extreme Christians

This Sunday's first reading is one of the descriptions of ideal apostolic life. Remember John's Gospel saying that God is love? Here we have Luke's version in Acts of that same principle. He begins with the community being one in heart and mind. They not only believed in the same Risen Lord, but their love for Him showed in their love for each other. They were not just a community or parish; they were one family. Luke shows two ways the Christian communities began to change the world. First, they told anyone who would listen about the resurrection "with great power." (Acts 4:33) You can take that as power to do miracles, healings, etc. But it can also mean the power of conviction: They were so excited about Jesus' resurrection, that they couldn't stop talking about it. Their fervor was infectious. We could use some of that fervor today. I sometimes think the only reason we don't do miracles ourselves is that we don't really believe we could. Maybe we need to remind ourselves that we aren't the ones doing the miracles--God is. Remember how many times Jesus told people it was their faith that cured them? God can do miracles any time he wants. But we can't receive them if we don't have faith. Instead of trying to believe that you can do a miracle, try believing that God can do it for you. The second way the disciples stood out was their willingness to give up anything for the Lord. Luke uses the example of selling their property to share with those in need. But some went even further, giving up their lives for the faith. That kind of witness says that the resurrection is real and I expect to take part in it. It also says that nothing can make me give up my faith. So what am I willing to give up for the Lord? It's easy to throw money in a collection for the poor. How about giving some time to feed the poor, or help build a home for someone? What can you give to help spread the faith--maybe the time to be a sponsor for a convert? The love you show to others could be their only experience of God's love.

April 9 - April 15 Monday: Is 7:10-14; 8:10; Ps 40:7-11; Heb 10:4-10; Lk 1:26-38 Tuesday: Acts 4:32-37; Ps 93:1-2, 5; Jn 3:7b-15 Wednesday: Acts 5:17-26; Ps 34:2-9; Jn 3:16-21 Thursday: Acts 5:27-33; Ps 34:2, 9, 17-20; Jn 3:31-36 Friday: Acts 5:34-42; Ps 27:1, 4, 13-14; Jn 6:1-15 Saturday: Acts 6:1-7; Ps 33:1-2, 4-5, 18-19; Jn 6:16-21 Sunday: Acts 3:13-15, 17-19; Ps 4:2, 4, 7-9; 1 Jn 2:1-5a; Lk 24:35-48

Feel free to contact any of the following in the parish office at 913-681-3348 or by email:

BASKETBALL MEN’S (AGE 21+)

For those who participate in Men’s Basketball on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 8:30pm-10:30pm in the school gym, this group is limited to adult parishioners who are 21 years of age or older. Children and minors are not allowed in the gym or school during this scheduled gym time as supervision is minimal.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS

The Knights of Columbus is the world largest Catholic Men’s Fraternal organization open to all Catholic men ages 18 and over. Interested in joining the Knights? Contact Desi O’Grady at [email protected] or 913-485-1114.

Thank you to everyone who volunteered or attended and helped keep the Knight’s of Ascension Friday Night Fish Frys “the Best Fish Fry in Town!” Over 6,000 hungry souls were served and there were over 600 folks who volunteered.

As always, all of the proceeds from the various Knight fund raising activities support local, national, and international Catholic Charities; Church of the Ascension; and four of our Seminarians. Your support and participation in these social, parish activities are very much appreciated.

The Ascension Council 10932 of the Knights of Columbus will once again be offering scholarships to young men and women who are entering their Freshman year of High School or College. Eligibility includes the children or grandchildren of active or deceased Knights of Columbus of Ascension Council 10932. High school applicants must be planning to attend an area Catholic high school. College applicants must plan to attend any accredited private, community, vocational, or public college as a full-time student. Applications can be found on the Ascension Knights website at www.ascensionkofc.com.

Are you a 3rd degree Knight? Consider becoming a 4th degree Knight and join our very own 4th degree Assembly at Ascension. On April 28 in Eudora the 4th Degree Exemplification will be held. The ceremony and banquet is only a 28-minute drive from here to Eudora. As you know, the 4th degree is the Patriotic degree and highest one a Knight can attain. Already six (6) Knights from the Ascension Council have already confirmed they will be participating in the exemplification. Contact Sir Knight Paul Surles at [email protected] for more information.

Knight’s Choir - Contact Dan Tira at [email protected] or 913-451-2341 if you are interested in joining.

For council members’ convenience, you can now pay your dues online at http://www.ascensionkofc.com.

RESPECT LIFE

No Act of Love is Lost Working together we can impress upon our fellow Americans the truth that abortion is a grave injustice that corrupts our entire society and retards progress on all the other issues that concern us from street crime to the economy. But at times the seeds of doubt invade our conscience. We may question is the time and effort worth it? Can my solitary efforts affect such a grave ill? When the evil one invades our thoughts with such drivel, we should recall these words of our Holy Father, Pope Francis: “No single act of love for God will be lost, no generous effort is meaningless, no painful endurance is wasted. All of these encircle our world like a vital force.” (Evangelli Gaudium) With the Holy Father’s good thoughts in mind, we must realize that we may never personally witness the positive results of our endeavors but we must remain steadfast in our commitment to protecting the weakest and most vulnerable among us as our acts of love will “encircle our world like a vital force”.
