Sacrament of the Sick

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Every so often it happens. It will be a normal day. I have the day all planned out with prayer, meetings, and appointments. And my cell phone rings. It’s the hospital or nursing home: “Father, ‘so-and-so’ is dying. Please come and anoint him.” There is a request for the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. It’s actually less dramatic than in the movies, but nonetheless it is an urgent call to have — not only the priest — but Christ accompany the sick person to their final destination — or to heal them completely and help them return to normal life. This Sunday is the Feast of the Ascension of the Lord. We commemorate how, after forty days after the Resurrection, Jesus ascended to the Father. But before He departs, He gives the “Great Commission” and tells His disciples, “I will be with you always until the end of time” (Mt 28:20). Certainly there are Eucharistic overtones to this promise, but it is also a promise that Jesus [through His sacraments] accompanies us at each moment of our life — from birth till death. In the past, the Anointing of the Sick was called “Extreme Unction” or the “Last Rites.” Those terms are a bit antiquated these days, because the Church understands that those who are of old age and also those whose sickness is life-threatening are able to receive Anointing of the Sick. In the gospels, Jesus heals the sick. He often lays hands on them, anoints them, and they are healed. The Apostle James says in his epistle, “Are there any sick among you? Let them send for the priests and let them lay hands upon them.” So the Sacrament of the Sick is carried out by bishops and priests by laying hands on the sick person and anointing them with blessed oil — first on the forehead and then the palms of the hands. The special grace of the Anointing of the Sick has as its effects: (1) the uniting of the sick person to the passion of Christ, for his own good and that of the whole Church; (2) the strengthening, peace, and courage to endure in a Christian manner the sufferings of illness or old age; (3) the forgiveness of sins, if the sick person was not able to ob-tain it through the sacrament of Penance; (4) the restoration of health, if it is conducive to the salva-tion of his soul; (5) the preparation for passing over to eternal life. This sacrament should be ideally administered when one has been able to make a good con-fession and also able still to receive Holy Communion. It is not administered for just any sickness. It has to be life threatening. And it should be administered to someone — if at all possible — while they are still conscious and lucid. And so do not wait to the very last minute of a person’s life. You never know… it might be too late!

The Knights of Columbus Council 10524 will hold a car wash on Sat-

urday June 8 from 9:00 AM until 1:00 PM weather permitting. The

cost is $10.00 per vehicle with all proceeds going to purchase new

wheelchairs for those in need. This is in line with the Knights of Co-

lumbus wheelchair initiative that places thousands of wheelchairs

around the world. We intend to have the wheelchairs we purchase

earmarked for distribution in East Texas. We hope to see you and

your dirty car on Saturday morning June 8,2019.
