Church of the Ascension 3rd Sunday of Easter April 19, 2015

STEWARDSHIP

“Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, ‘Peace to you.’ But they were startled and frightened.” Luke 24:36--37

Throughout the day we have many opportunities to “see the face of Jesus” in others and provide some “peace” in their lives. Just because the person is a stranger, maybe looks different than us or is someone we don’t particularly care for doesn’t let us off the hook.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church, often abbreviated as ‘CCC’, is a summary of the Catholic faith. It originated with a recommendation made by the Extraordinary Synod of Bishops in 1985. In 1986 Pope John Paul II appointed a Commission of Cardinals and Bishops to develop a compendium of Catholic doctrine. On June 25, 1992 Pope John Paul II officially approved the definitive version of the Catechism of the Catholic Church consisting of 2,865 paragraphs conveying the essential and fundamental content of the Catholic faith and morals in a complete and summary way.

CATHOLIC FACT The Catechism The Youth Catechism of the Catholic Church, often referred to as the YOUCAT, is a summary of the Catechism of the Catholic Church in a question and answer format that is intended to be more easily readable format. Did you know that you can read the YOUCAT in a year? You can sign up to have it email to you directly by going to the following link: http://flocknote.com/catechism.

“THE VIRGIN MARY’S LAST HOME ON EARTH”

(No it was not in Jerusalem) By Bill Quatman, President of The American Society of Ephesus, Inc.

Sponsored by the Women of Ascension April 23, 7:00PM

Parish Hall (Brief Reception to Follow)

After persecutions broke out there against the Apostles, including the beheading of St. James, all of them left Jerusalem to begin their missions. St. John, the beloved disciple, made his way to Ephesus in Asia Minor (today Turkey). St. Paul spent three years in Ephesus, and wrote his letters to the “Ephesians” after nearly causing a riot in that city. Did the Apostles leave Mary behind, alone in Jerusalem? St. John tells us that after Christ entrusted Mary to his care at the foot of the Cross, “from that hour, that disciple took Her into his own home.” (John 19:27). The home was discovered in 1891 in Ephesus by Lazarist priests in a fascinating search using the “visions” of a German nun, the stigmatic Blessed Anna Catherine Emmerich, who was beatified in 2004 by Pope John Paul II. The house has been visited by three Popes, including Pope Benedict XVI, who celebrated Mass there in November 2006 and met with Mr. Quatman.

Come hear the story of the house, its amazing discovery and the million Christians and Muslims who make pilgrimages there each year. Our presenter is Bill Quatman, President of the American Society of Ephesus, founded by his grandfather in 1955 to help restore Mary’s home, St. John’s tomb, and other Christian sites in Ephesus, Turkey. You won’t forget this amazing story.

RENEWING THE FAMILY ONE LESSON AT A TIME

Do you want to find ways to pass on the faith and live it in your family? Did you know Ascension Parish has a program for anyone in Kindergarten – 6th Grade? This program is for children who attend public schools, home school and Catholic schools. Our Catholic Faith is the greatest of gifts to pass onto your children that will affect their whole lives long after they have left home.

Family Formation is a truly innovative faith formation program enabling parents to be the primary educators in the Faith. Family Formation revolves around the family. This shared learning experience spills over into the family’s everyday life.

Here is how it works - parents and kids come once a month to the parish to learn, and parents work at home on the next three weeks’ worth of lessons. It’s a program that is truly renewing the family one lesson at a time.

Go to kcascension.org under the School of Religion section to find out more.

MINISTRY OF CARE

We are looking for parishioners to serve parishioners! We have St Luke’s Hospital, the homebound and several assisted living facilities within our parish and we need some loving souls (YOU!) to bring Jesus to our Parishioners that live in assisted living. Most EMHC’s serve in one of the three areas one day a month. We do a Communion Service at least once a week in the assisted living facilities, visit individuals at least two times a week and bring daily Communion to the hospital. The requirements for being an EMHC are that you love to share Holy Communion, you love people, and you have been through (or will go through the next time it’s offered) training to be an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion at Ascension. Please prayerfully consider helping in this ministry once a month, or more often if you like. Contact Jean in the office with interest or questions at: [email protected].

DID YOU KNOW???

Ascension is a very active parish. You must reserve the room you are using in advance of your function. No one should assume they have a room anywhere in the facility unless you have submitted a space reservation form to the office and it has been approved, even if you have been meeting there in the past. Please check with Jan in the office to be sure you have the space reserved. There is also a list of who is using what room under the TV monitor in the Gathering Space.

WEEKLY PRAYER

9

Third Sunday of Easter Fault or Fate?

Peter seems to be pretty tough with his listeners in the first reading. He says they handed Jesus over, denied him before Pilate, asked for a murderer to be released in his place, and put Jesus to death. They must have thought they were doomed. Suddenly, he tells them they were just ignorant. And that God had planned all this long ago. So is he saying Jesus’ death is their fault, or just fate? The answer of course is that it’s everyone’s fault. Our sins are the reason for Jesus’ death. We deny Jesus when we choose to be selfish instead of loving. We hand him over when we tell ourselves we are too busy to take time to pray. We ask for Barabbas to be freed instead of Jesus when we insist on doing things our own way rather than God’s way. We crucify Jesus when we follow the crowd instead of following the Lord. It is only “fate” in the sense that our sins needed to be forgiven and God plan’s for salvation was through Jesus’ death and resurrection. Does that mean our sins cause something in the past to happen? There were sinners long before Jesus’ time and God knew there would be sinners after that. God also planned to forgive anyone who repented their sins. In one sense, Jesus died for those who deserved to be punished for sin, and also for those who would deserve punishment in the future. He rose from the dead to show that God’s forgiveness raises us up from guilt to a new life. Peter wasn’t laying a guilt trip on the listeners. After all, this is good news. God planned all this to show how much he loved us. Our response should be one of joy that we are forgiven because of that love. All we have to do is tell God we are sorry, mean it, and start living our response of love. Sins may be our fault, but Love is our fate.

Respite Care Are you caring for a loved one at home? We have parishioners who want to help, and who are trained in Respite Care and would love to give you a break! This also gives the one you care for a break from you!!!

Prison Ministry We provide to all persons incarcerated in Johnson County jails and juvenile facilities. This includes: Mass or Communion Service, Catechesis or Scripture Study, and facilitate regular access to the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We participate in a letter writing mentoring program and Mentor for Success through the state prisons. Kids can participate (and adults) by making cards with pictures drawn, Bible verses, messages of hope, etc. using card stock, construction paper, magic markers or colored pencils (no crayons please), and first names only. Visit our website at www.sdpo.org. This is an Ascension Ministry in conjunction with other parishes. All are welcome and needed! Contact Jean in the office for more details. We Recycle Eyeglasses and Sunglasses Save your old eyeglasses and sunglasses to be recycled throughout the world! The donation bin is located behind the bulletin boards in the Gathering Area.

LIVING STATIONS

The Stations of the Cross are an old tradition that began in the Middle Ages when Christians longed to make a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, but found this impossible. This Lenten tradition was brought to life on Wednesday, April 1, 2015 when the 6th graders presented their version of the Stations to the Ascension community. The Stations of the Cross help us remember the suffering that Jesus took upon himself for each of us. This reenactment of Christ’s journey reminds us of the last days Jesus spent on earth as a member of the human family, and how much he loves us. This presentation during Holy Week reminds us that we have been saved by the sacrifice of Jesus, and is the perfect way for Ascension to begin the Triduum and our Easter vacation.

EXCHANGE CITY FUN

Fifth graders took their annual trip to Exchange City on February 12, 2015. The field trip is intended to provide young people with a realistic view of what it is like to be an adult with a job. Students prepare for months in advance, and even participate in an interview process to get ready for their big day in the “real world”. They learn about vital terms in economics: supply, demand, opportunity costs, needs, and wants. They also learn the basics of maintaining a checkbook and register. While at Exchange City, students work in businesses, deposit paychecks, and spend money to boost their local economy. Students must work in advance to set up a business plan with advertising and product ideas.

“I learned how to be an adult and work at a job,” fifth grader, Aidan says.

Classmate Lawson agreed, “I learned the virtue of patience when I had to wait in line at the International Bazaar.”

Some students experienced the struggles of working a job.

“I learned it can be hard when you are dealing with a customer,” Hannah says.

All students were able to gain something from the experience and the fifth-grade teachers look forward to another great trip next year.

GRILL YOUR SEMINARIANS TRIVIA NIGHT

Registration Deadline May 11 May 21, Check-in beginning at 6:15PM St. Michael the Archangel School/Gym

Leawood, KS.

Registration deadline is May 11, but sooner is much better since it can sell out. Check-in begins 6:15pm, set up your table, buy Mulligans (insurance), and socialize. The first round of trivia begins at 7:00pm, and ends at 9:30pm. We recommend registering by table using the Eventbrite.com website. Access it by clicking the picture on our kckvocations.com website. Food: Bring your favorite appetizer/dessert to share at your table and your own beverages. Bring plates, napkins, cups, etc. Cash/Checks: Bring extra with you because there are fun $1.00 games, a 50/50 raffle, and “Mulligans” are sold as insurance for answers you may not be confident you got right. They can be bought for seminarians too. It is cheaper to buy them before the game begins, though they can be bought throughout the evening. Attire: This is casual, but some tables wear matching hats or other themed outfits. Theme: You will need a name for your table, and some table decorations. There is a prize for the best decorated table.
