LIVING MASS MORE FULLY
Liturgy of the Word
“Christ comes to us as food twice, in His Word and in the Eucharist” (Tertullian). This is what the Church has believed for centuries, since the very beginning. In the liturgy of the Word, we don’t read a book to people who are (more or less) listening, but rather, when the Sacred Scriptures are read in the Church, “the Father, who is in heaven, meets His children with great love and speaks with them.” (Dei Verbum, 21) A real dialogue is happening: God speaks through the First Reading, and the assembly responds with the Psalm; He continues to speak in the Second Reading and the Gospel, and we respond in faith with the Creed, and with the Prayers of the Faithful (or Universal Prayer), lifting up to our Father the needs and people of the world. The readings follow a 3-year cycle. On Sundays, generally, the First reading is from the Old Testament, and the Second reading is from the New Testament. One of the 150 Psalms present in the Bible is interposed between the readings. There is a connection among the Scriptures selected: the First Reading and the Gospel share a common theme (often with the Psalm too), while the Second Reading is a sequential reading, for different Sundays, of that particular Letter or Book of the New Testament. A special emphasis is put on the Gospel, as “the principal witness for the life and teaching” of Jesus (Dei Verbum, 18). Even more: “Christ, present in his own word, proclaims the Gospel” (General Instruction of the Roman Missal, 29). Confident in this belief, we stand. This is a sign of respect and honor toward Jesus (as you would do, for example, to an important judge or public person, as he enters the room), and expresses our need to be more attentive to Jesus’ very words and deeds, more receptive to His message for us today. For this reason also, before the Gospel is proclaimed, we cross our mind, lips and heart, so that what we hear may be on our mind, announced with our lips, and treasured in our hearts. The homily, then, breaks open the Scriptures. It “is meant to foster a deeper understanding of the word of God, so that it can bear fruit in the lives of” us all (Sacramentum Caritatis, 46), and inspire us to live truly as disciples of Christ, as we go forth, back to our own weekly activities.

STEWARDSHIP “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again.” John 4:13
Jesus reminds us that material things, even something as basic as water, can never satisfy us for long. When we build our lives around material possessions we always want more. RESPECT LIFE 40 DAYS FOR LIFE SPRING 2017 CAMPAIGN “Make a Statement, Ascension!” April 2, 7:00AM-7:00PM Offsite
40 Days for Life is a community-based campaign that takes a determined, peaceful approach to showing local communities the consequences of abortion in their own neighborhoods, for their own friends and families. The goal is to protest abortion through a peaceful, prayerful presence near clinics that perform abortion. The goal is that at least two people are standing witness each hour from 7:00am to 7:00pm. To sign up as an individual, family or group of friends, go to kcascension.org /Quick Links, or contact Jean in the parish office for more information [email protected].
“It must’ve been a candy apple. I can’t believe Adam and Eve would do us in for plain fruit.”
Why he quit going to sports events. A pastor gave these reasons why he stopped attending sports events:
• “Every time I went, they asked me for money. • The people with whom I had to sit didn’t seem very
friendly. • The seats were too hard and not comfortable. • The coach never came over to talk to me. • The referee made a decision with which I could not agree. • I was sitting near some hypocrites who came only to see
what others are wearing. • Some games went overtime, and I was late getting home. • The band played some numbers that I had never heard
before. • The games are scheduled when I want to do other things. • Since I read a book on sports, I feel that I know more than
the coaches anyhow. • I don’t want to take my children because I want them to
choose for themselves what sport they like best.”
(Following was this postscript: “With apologies to those who use the same excuses for not going to church.”)

THE SEVEN LAST WORDS OF CHRIST An Evening of Scripture, Reflection and Song April 7, 7:00PM Church
For five Lenten Fridays many of you gather in the church and walk the Stations of the Cross. On the sixth Friday, April 7, 7:00pm, you have an opportunity to arrive at the cross and bear witness to His Crucifixion.
As Christ our Savior hung on the cross to die for all mankind, He spoke seven times - to His mother and apostle John, to His executioners, to the penitent thief, and to God, His Father. All are invited to enter more fully into Christ’s redemptive act of love by participating in a very special prayer service centered on Christ’s dying words of hope, despair, forgiveness, and love. The adult and youth choirs, cantors, musicians, priests and congregation all stand spiritually at the foot of the Cross - listening, praying, singing: “Were you there when they crucified our Lord?”
All of us on our Lenten Journey to Easter Resurrection hope to answer “Yes.”

Third Sunday of Lent One Small Step
This story in John's Gospel is one of the three longest Gospel readings next to the Passion stories. They are always read on the Sundays of Lent when those preparing for baptism celebrate the scrutinies. They are meant not only for catechumens, but also for all of us who are growing in faith. In today's Gospel, we see the Samaritan woman coming to faith. The steps she takes are our steps, too. Though she needs Jesus' help, he approaches her first. In asking her for a drink, he is really thirsting for her faith. He invites us to make the journey of faith long before we start by putting us into a faithful family, giving us a curious heart that seeks the truth, sending us a friend or spouse whose example draws us to the Lord. The next step is acknowledging our need and our sinfulness. The woman does this when she asks for living water and faces her behavior in having five husbands. Admitting our need for God, and especially for God's forgiveness, opens us to God's saving grace. Another step is drawing closer to God in prayer. That explains the odd question about worshiping on a mountain. Jesus tells the woman, and us, that the best worship is honest and from the Spirit. That is more important than when or where we pray. God hears the prayers of a small congregation in a rural chapel just as well those of a thousand people in a large cathedral. When we begin to share our faith with others, we take the step of living our faith. We make a difference in someone else's life and they begin to experience Jesus presence. Like the woman who told her neighbors about Jesus, we find that the people we have touched begin to find the Lord on their own. Our catechumens are taking these steps now, thanks to those who have helped them experience Jesus' invitation to faith.

Calling all Knights Wives and Knights who like to bake!! The desserts we serve are (and I hate to say it) probably our most popular menu item because of the preparation effort that is put into them by all of you. This year we are fortunate, again, that Johnette Martin and Kay Korte will serve as the coordinators for desserts. We are asking all wives, Knights who like to bake, and especially the officers’ wives to prepare (or buy) desserts for the Fish Fry's this year on Fridays: March 24, 31, and April 7. If you are interested in doing so, please contact Johnette Martin at: [email protected] or 913-481-8663. We need your help and appreciate anything you can do.

MINISTRY OF CARE CarePortal is helping local churches meet local needs they never knew about, while fostering cross-congregational cooperation and building new relationships based on goodwill and increased understanding. They send out an email, with the needs of the family explained, and we can help by clicking on the email. For monetary requests, Social Concerns will provide the money. I will be emailing out the requests that I think we can help with, (for example some material requests, like beds, baby items, kitchen table, washer and dryer so far). I will be emailing different active ministries. If you have any household items and are in no hurry to get them out of your house, let me know. If you can help with transporting things to the needy families, I would love to have your name! Contact Jean in the office if you want to help or for more information at 913-681-3348 or [email protected].
MOTHERS OF YOUNG CHILDREN Mothers of Young Children (MOYC) provides expectant moms through moms with second grade age children spiritual enrichment and fellowship. To join, or if you have any questions, please contact Meghan McEvoy at [email protected] or 913-475-1026.
Upcoming Activities: March 22 - Mom’s Night Out at 7:00pm at Coach’s. March 31 - Children’s outing at noon at Blackbob Park. April 6 - Monthly meeting at 7:00pm in the parish hall.
