Speaker of the week

President Tapan called upon Rtn. Jeremy Han to introduce the Guest Speaker, Mr. Jeffrey Lee, Ministry of Education Counselor, who works with youths and young adults for the past 20 years. He was engaged by the Ministry of Education to develop programmes for specific scholars groups. Mr. Lee has also been a volunteer with TOUCH Community Services International and lead crisis relief teams to disaster stricken countries. He has conducted community development projects in Asia.Prior to his talk, Mr. Lee stated that his intention at the meeting was simply to champion the cause of youths. Mr. Lee noted that our youths were overfed with dreams through the information garnered from the media, internet, education and environment but were underdeveloped in character values and experiences which makes for resilience. He cited reports which showed that youths have strong views, aspirations and dreams, and were willing to pursue their goals. He also highlighted some of the youths’ views on education and their internal thinking.

Mr. Lee noted the impact that such thinking would have in the future generations of workers who would think big but lack character depth to carry out and follow through; who would have personal passion but not corporate mission and would avoid difficult or challenging tasks. He gave his opinion of other developmental impact such as a loss in total leadership quotient as our youths shun top post as well as overall competiveness if they do not develop strong resilience, both locally and overseas. Mr. Lee also shared some success stories of youths who having received mentoring, went on to surpass their expectations. Mr. Lee concluded his presentation with an appeal to members to get the youths under their wings and make a difference.Rtn. David Ong extended the Club’s vote of thanks to Mr. Lee, and added cheekily that when he was first asked to do so, he thought the talk was about him being “overfed and underdeveloped”! On a more serious note, Rtn. David noted that youths were close to his heart as well as to Rotary, citing some of the projects which were undertaken.

The Guide to Daily LivingBefore doing the things we want to do, consider first, the precept of the guide. Ask ourselves these 4 questions and act upon them:First: Have I spent some time in self-examination?Second: Have I spent quality time with my family?Third: Have I given my best to my work?Fourth: Have I given some time to someone near and far?The Guide, in fact, encompasses the 4 parts of the Object of Rotary.
