Introductory remarks

President Tapan Rao opened the 2nd meeting for the month of December, designated by Rotary International (R.I.) as “Family Month”. He took the opportunity to quote from R.I.’s President Kalyan Banerjee’s Message for the December issue of The Rotarian – “I feel incredibly strongly that Rotary should never, ever come between the Rotarian and the family. Rotary service should be something that brings the family closer together.” President Tapan warmly welcomed Guest Speakers, Ms. Jutta Odenwaelder and Ms. Midah Tancock from The BrainArtClub Singapore.

Happy Birthday

President Tapan was pleased to call upon birthday celebrants – Rtns. Haider Nawaz, Garry Taylor, as well as Speaker, Ms. Jutta Odenwaelder, who would celebrate her birthday on 25th December, to come forward to cut the birthday cake.

Toast

There were no visiting Rotarians, nevertheless, President Tapan called upon PE Jimmy Ooi to raise a toast to Rotary International.

Speakers of the week

Vice President Brigitte Holtschneider took great pleasure in introducing the two lady speakers, Ms. Jutta Odenwaelder, an artist and creativity and art educator, who grew up in Germany; moved to New York City to study at Columbia University; lived in Paris; and went on to live in Tel Aviv, Berlin, and Seoul, where her two children were born. She is also married to our member, Rtn. Dr. Tim Philippi.Ms. Odenwaelder’s father was a Rotarian of more than 40 years and she was a Rotary Exchange student to Australia in 1979.Ms. Midah Tancock holds a fine arts degree from Lasalle College of the Arts, but was already a successful painter in London and Hong Kong before returning to Singapore. Ms. Tancock studied Architecture and Design before delving into art and was responsible for a number of large designs in Singapore, one of which is the suspended bridge linking The Palawan Beach on Sentosa island to the southern-most point of Singapore.Ms. Odenwaelder noted that creativity had been rated the number one skill for managers and leaders by over 3000 CEOs worldwide. However, she added creativity had been on the

decline for years, citing that in the US, children increased their IQ scores considerably since the 1990s, but their creativity decreased at the same rateShe remarked that 3 to 5-year old children were the most creative individuals and were 95% creative in solutions and reactions to life. Ms. Odenwaelder highlighted the following characteristics of a creative person: -Great deal of energy, but also able to rest and be quiet-Smart, but still capable of child-like thinking-Mix of playfulness and discipline-Good perception of the world around them, but at the same time unlimited imagination-Generally very independent in nature-Extremely passionate about their work, but able to be objective Open and sensitiveMs. Odenwaelder noted that in order for creativity to flow, the environment needed to be open to creativity and there should be time to create, as well as the right to make mistakes. She added that role models were also needed and an understanding that not everything could be measured with a test. She further stressed the need for children to be allowed to develop their own creative language through art. President Tapan called upon Rtn Jean-Philippe Lionnet, who warmly extended the Club’s vote of thanks to Ms. Odenwaelder and Ms. Tancock, adding that he was always impressed with the abilities of creative persons.

Rotary Christmas party

Rtn. Laveen Daryani introduced the concept of Book of Humour (BOH) Facebook page as a means to increase the sales of the book, so that a greater contribution could be made from the book’s proceeds. He added that the concept would extend the book’s reach not just to Rotarians but to Rotarian contacts all around the world, and increase the book’s target market. Rtn. Laveen displayed and discussed the BOH Facebook page and mentioned some of the challenges such as creation of the Paypal account. He requested President Tapan’s assistance in this matter, to which President Tapan advised, to initiate the proceedings for endorsement. Rtn. Laveen informed that once he officially launches the page, he would make another presentation giving all the necessary instructions. In the meantime, Rtn. Laveen requested members who do not have a Facebook page to start one up and add friends.

The Guide to Daily LivingBefore doing the things we want to do, consider first, the precept of the guide. Ask ourselves these 4 questions and act upon them:First: Have I spent some time in self-examination?Second: Have I spent quality time with my family?Third: Have I given my best to my work?Fourth: Have I given some time to someone near and far?The Guide, in fact, encompasses the 4 parts of the Object of Rotary.
