Introductory remarks

President Tapan Rao warmly welcomed the Speaker, Mr. Francis Wong from the Centre for Non-Profit Leadership and members to the Club’s meeting.

Exchange of banners

President Tapan was pleased to exchange banners with PP Catalin. He took the opportunity to call upon Rtn. Konrad Klemmer, the father of our new member - Rtn. Reinhard, to come forward and exchange Club banners. Rtn. Gujarathi from the Rotary Club of Pune, also came to receive our Club banner.

Rotary Scholar

Rotary Scholar, Ms. Helen Penwill was invited by President Tapan to say a few words. Ms. Penwill briefly introduced herself and added that she was in Singapore pursuing a Masters in Law at the National University of Singapore. Ms. Penwill advised that she would be addressing the Club in February 2012 and thanked President Tapan for the invitation to participate in the Club’s Diwali celebration held on 19th November.

Rtn. Jean-Philippe Lionnet called upon PP Catalin Chiriac-Babei to address the Club. Members learnt that the Rotary Club of Bucuresti was formed in 1929 (one year before our Club’s charter). PP Catalin advised that his club was the first Rotary Club chartered in Romania, but had to stop its operation during the country’s tumultuous upheavals. The club was rechartered in 1999 and since then, it has been very involved in assisting the country’s social problems, particularly its health issues.

Speakers of the week

President Tapan called upon Rtn. Gerald Abeyawardena to introduce the Speaker, Mr. Francis Wong who is the Chief Executive Officer of the Centre for Non-Profit Leadership (CNPL), a registered charity that focuses on capability building of leadership at Board and Executive levels of non-profit organizations in Singapore. Prior to his talk, Mr. Wong commented on the sincerity, friendship and unity which he saw around him at the Meeting. In his presentation, Mr. Wong highlighted some brief facts and figures on registered charities, adding that there were approximately 2,000 such charities with 542 being Institutions of Public Character (IPCs) with an income of S$9.4 billion.Mr. Wong described the Eco-system for Charities in Singapore and highlighted some of the non-profit leadership gaps and challenges. He spoke of the “Volun-Tier Pyramid” which featured a three-tier key focus of leadership, specialist and generalist volunteering. He further provided members with some Board Match Statistics. Mr. Wong gladly answered questions from the floor, with some assistance from our member, Rtn. David Ong.

Rtn. Dr. Mark Eger was pleased to extend the Club’s vote of thanks to Mr. Wong and added that he was deeply impressed by the presentation. He called on Mr. Wong to receive the Club’s mementos of appreciation.

RI DISTRICT 3310 END POLIO TRANS-SABAH WALK & CLIMB

President Tapan called upon VP Brigitte Holtschneider, the Club’s Rotary Foundation Chairperson to present Assistant Governor Erich Schneider’s presentation on the District’s Significant Project for 2011-2012 i.e. the End Polio Trans-Sabah Walk and Climb from Sandakan to Mt. Kinabalu and Kota Kinabalu from 7th to 18th November 2011. VP Brigitte advised that AG Erich was participating in this arduous walk to in order to promote awareness and to raise funds help end Polio. She called upon members to help support this worthy cause and make a donation to The Rotary Foundation for PolioPlus.
