President Tapan Rao started the meeting with a report on the eradication of polio. He quoted from Rotary International that “Rotary club members worldwide are cautiously celebrating a major milestone in the global effort to eradicate polio. India, until recently an epicenter of the wild poliovirus, has gone one year without recording a new case of the crippling, sometimes fatal, disease.”

ToastRtn. Roland Jossi invited Charter President (CP) Samir Parikh to say a few words about his club – Rotary Club of Baroda Cosmopolitan in the state of Gujarat, India. CP Samir advised that his club was the first breakfast Rotary Club in District 3060. CP Samir was pleased to advise that he had started a new club in Baroda which now has 40 members. His club undertakes major projects in the health and environment sectors, particularly to assist children.

Speaker of the week

Rtn. Gerald Abeyawardena was given the pleasant task to introduce the Speaker, Rtn. Rewa Mirpuri, a member of the Club since 1967 and a staunch supporter of the International Service Committee as well as the compiler of the successful Humour books – Book of Humour, Best of Humour and Bank of Humour. Prior to starting his talk on “Humour is Happiness”, Rtn. Rewa thanked members for their support, adding that some members have assured him that even if the talk was not funny, they would laugh! Rtn. Rewa continued in his usual indomitable style to give tips on how to develop a sense of humour, such as, by smiling and adopting a cheerful attitude as well as mixing with optimistic people. Peppering his talk with many hilarious jokes, he highlighted some points on how to get the best use of humour, how to remember the jokes and how to avoid embarrassment when nobody laughs at a joke.

President Tapan called upon Rtn. Robert Craiu to extend the Club’s vote of thanks to Rtn. Rewa. Rtn. Robert advised that he decided not to tell a joke, as it would seem superfluous. However, he did want to inform members, of the processes of the Book of Humour publication and the dedication of Rtn. Rewa. Rtn. Robert noted that Rtn. Rewa receives many jokes, unfortunately, not all are fit for publication, therefore the jokes are fastidiously vetted and the Club ends up with three wonderful books compiled for good causes. Rtn. Robert warmly thanked Rtn. Rewa for his excellent efforts in the Book of Humour project and for his talk.

The Guide to Daily LivingBefore doing the things we want to do, consider first, the precept of the guide. Ask ourselves these 4 questions and act upon them:First: Have I spent some time in self-examination?Second: Have I spent quality time with my family?Third: Have I given my best to my work?Fourth: Have I given some time to someone near and far?The Guide, in fact, encompasses the 4 parts of the Object of Rotary.
