PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2016 has been a landmark year for the Club. The significant milestones that we have achieved have been made possible through the collective hard work and goodwill of the entire membership, players, volunteers, Club staff, Board and the engagement of the local community. When we started to explore the possibility of a merger of the Junior and Senior clubs in 2014/15, we could not have envisaged such a smooth and seamless transition as has been achieved in our first merger year of 2016. By bringing together the many sub-groups within the Club, respecting a century of history and tradition, embracing the Club’s very clear culture and values, introducing new activity streams, investing in our staff and systems and, most fundamentally, by turning our focus outward to the local community to position ourselves as ‘The Family Club’, we have been able to take the next step toward sustainability and set a new benchmark for community rugby in Australia. The Club enjoyed a 37% growth in registrations - with >1,800 players in 2016, we are now Australia’s largest community rugby club. I would like to personally thank the Board for their tireless efforts throughout the year; we made a lot of it up as we went along, setting a new governance framework, establishing new systems, and driving some early efficiency measures. We had an even representation of the senior and junior traditions of the Club as well as 25% female Board members. Some key Board achievements are:
Undertaking the Jacaranda Function Room air conditioning project from Club cash reserves;
Signing the 10-year Crosby Park lease;
Achieving profitability despite heavy investment in the first merger year;
Setting up reliable cash management and reporting systems for the large increase in turnover that the merger has generated;
Establishing reliable and transparent governance and reporting systems;
Creating a year-round offering with something for all members of the local community;
Formulating a five-year Strategic Plan;
Establishing regular dialogue / awareness with the ARU and QRU; and
Completing a tour to Sydney for the purposes of benchmarking our performance and establishing dialogue with the Sydney clubs; and
Securing the hosting rights to the 2017 National Club Championship and then negotiating a live TV broadcast deal with FOX Sports.
We have reported an adjusted profit of just short of $30,000, which is a strong outcome in our first year as a merged club. Thanks, go to Treasurer Brendan Yantsch and his Audit & Risk Sub-Committee. 2017 will see improved cost efficiencies and an expected profit increase. The 2017 Board will be focused on extracting further operational efficiencies and financial sustainability as well as further community engagement initiatives. On behalf of the Board, I would like to thank our outstanding staff. Led by CEO Matt Kaye, the team has gone above and beyond to deliver the many facets of the Brothers rugby program both on and off the field. We are fortunate to have such a solid team delivering these programs and services for our members and their families. Thanks, go to Director of Rugby Ben McCormack, Registrars Karen Nicholls and Amanda Stenson, Administrator Leta Dempsey, Operations Manager Jason Neylon, Groundsman Al Anderson, and bookkeepers Nicole Elder and Des Hogan. The 2016 events program was highlighted by the Pre-Test Luncheon with >800 guests, home game feature days, Camp Out Night, Carnival Day, and the Gala Ball. Thanks to all involved in arranging these events. We were also delighted to welcome our Life Members Lunch at the Norths home game, and the 1966 Premiership 50 Year Reunion Lunch at the University home game. We thank our sponsors without whom we would be unable to make the investments required to drive the Club’s growth. In particular Ray White Ascot, Gouldson Legal, Rohrig Builders, Savills, BBC Digital and Super Butcher have all made significant contributions throughout the year. We have >30 sponsors and, although there are too many to name individually, we thank you all.
2016 has also been an outstanding year onfield. Who could have dreamt that we would win the Hospital Cup in our first merger year! In our best rugby year in >30 years, the Club took home five premierships including the Premier Grade title. Few of us will forget the amazing Grand Final Day at Ballymore with thousands of Brothers supporters forming the tunnel and then streaming onto the field at fulltime. This was truly the fullest representation of the strength of spirit of the merged Brothers Rugby Club. The ground shook at the Green Shed Bar that evening as we celebrated long into the night! Congratulations to Premier Head Coach Carl Marshall, his support team, and all involved in the four grade premierships. We congratulate all representative players in under age and open age divisions. We had 11 NRC representatives, two Australian U20 representatives, five Super Rugby representatives, and we are proud to see our very own Taniela Tupou join the Wallaby Spring Tour. The under-age divisions enjoyed a strong year with registration growth of 13% to reach our highest ever numbers. Thanks to all coaches, managers, volunteers, players and families for their support throughout the year. Our coaching program is reaching across all ages and will be improved in 2017 to give a clear pathway for all players whom we value equally from our U3 Little Bros through to Premier Grade. Congratulations to U12 White for their Premiership. The Club now offers traditional XV rugby for U6 to Premier ages, Little Bros for U3-U5 future players, Girls Touch, Sevens, Elite Development Squad for U16 to Premier Grade, and the Modified Rugby Program. Thanks to Jodie Kaye for her outstanding work with the Girls Touch program which now has >500 players and is Australia’s largest all-girls touch competition after just two short years. We congratulate Megan and Anthony Elliott for winning the Nick Farr-Jones Spirit of Rugby Award for the Modified Rugby Program, which was born at Brothers in 2014. We have been pleased to see the re-emergence of tours in the past three years with the U12 Sydney Tour, U13 NZ Tour, U16 Dubai Tour, and the Senior Tour to Canada. Special thanks go to Michael Spork and Stephen Twist for leading the volunteer base. Also, our sincere thanks to the many parents and friends who acted as managers, coaches, field marshal’s, club officials, and myriad other roles throughout the year. Further thanks go to The Hobbits who run The Hobbit Bar & Grill at home games under the guidance of Monty Grainger. Thanks, goes The Brothers Foundation for their generous support of the Club Memorial Wall which was coordinated by Club Historian Anthony McDermott. I would like to make a special mention to the Player Leadership Group led by Club Captain Bart Flanagan. On a personal level, it has been a privilege to work with these young men and to see them lead the culture of the Club. The merger could not have been completed without their leadership and engagement across all parts of the Club. I would also like to personally thank the Past Presidents Group for their guidance and counsel leading into the merger and throughout this year. Paul McLean, Tony Shaw, Dennis Croft, Mark Stanton and Dave Hine give of their time to simply help guide the culture and direction of the Club. We have achieved so much so quickly and yet the overwhelming feeling is that the journey has just started. We are focused on long term sustainability and forging a position of leadership for Australian community rugby while at the same time protecting and growing the unique culture that defines Brothers Rugby Club. The good news stories in Australian rugby today are the growth in women’s’ participation and the surge in the tribalism and quality of Club rugby. We are pleased that club rugby is alive and flourishing here in Brisbane and we are delighted to make our contribution to its escalation onto the national stage. Thanks to all members, volunteers, players, friends and family for a wonderful year. Brothers. The Family Club.
Hans Pearson
TREASURER’S REPORT I am pleased to present the audited financial statements and Treasurer’s Report of the club for the year ended 31 October 2016. Before describing the results for the year, I take this opportunity to acknowledge the efforts and thank all past committees and treasurers of both Brothers Rugby Club and Brothers Junior Rugby Union Club for delivering the respective clubs into the amalgamation process in strong financial positions. It has been a successful year for the club, both on the field, and in managing the amalgamation process. The culmination of these efforts resulting in delivering a continuation of this strong financial position. The focus for this year has been the introduction of new accounting policies, internal controls and reporting mechanisms which bring the club’s finance function from that of 2 small operations into those mechanisms required for an organisation with turnover now exceeding $1.6M. Financial summary - The key financial information in relation to the 2016 financial year are as follows:
Operating deficit after depreciation and abnormal items ($52,207)
Operating profit before depreciation and abnormal items $28,965
Total income of $1,624,932 [2015 $1,505,309] - Memberships and registrations - increased player numbers across all ages, lead to greater
player registrations and membership revenue: 14% $317,952 [2015 $273,313] - Brothers Touch Association – 2 seasons in 2016, only 1 season in 2015 120% $53,272 [2015
$24,214] – net profit from touch 75% $9,073 [2015 $5,177] - Events – exceptional result from events considering the club undertook one less event than in
normal years, main contributor was the rugby lunch. - Function centre and Rent Ruggers, concentrated effort to capitalise on club facilities, Ruggers
contributed for full year following an initial rent free period 99% $85,428 [2015 $42,966] - Investment Income & Southside Bingo – decrease due to drop in Bingo operations and a profit
retention policy in preparation for redevelopment in 2017-18 41% $48,417 [2015 $82,122] - QRU subsidies – ceased in 2016 100% $ nil [2015 $20,000]
Total COGS of $504,830, [2015 $557,406] - 2015 influenced by one off stock write offs of all stock holding old club logos
Total expenses of $1,091,137, [2015 $986,742] - Direct Rugby expenses – increased due to additional wages for Director of coaching - Grounds Facilities & Clubhouse – increased costs due to increased usage, major costs increase
offset by outgoings recovered from Ruggers rent and function revenue
Despite the reported deficit, the underlying profit from normal operations was a good result. Some of the cost duplications and economies of scale that were identified during the merger analysis and 2016 budget mechanism did not eventuate as the club concentrated on delivering new programs to the members during the merger year. The focus for 2017 is the identification of cost savings and efficiencies and rolling out the new programs for a second time, which should drive improved margins.in 2017.
Conclusion I would like to take this opportunity to thank Matt Kaye and all BRC staff for their efforts. In particular, I would like to thank Des Hogan who has worked tirelessly in assisting the club staff and myself. Des’ advice and counsel during this merger year has been invaluable. I would also like to thank the Management Committee, members of the Audit and Risk Sub-Committee, General Committee members, club volunteers, players, coaches, members and supporters for their contributions to the club during 2016.
Regards
Brenden Yantsch

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER’S REPORT In last year’s Annual Report, I mentioned that the club had several highlights and disappointments but was in a much stronger position than the previous year. In 2016 there has been significant change, with the club’s merger we are now the largest community Rugby Club in Australia, we continue to be in a sustainable financial position and claimed the Queensland Premier Grade Premiership for the first time seven years. The clubs on field performances winning Four Premierships has demonstrated years of hard work beginning with the recruitment of quality players over the last 4-5 years, the high-quality coaching staff and an increased professionalism in the rugby program. The Elite Development Squad Program supported by Rohrig Group was formed in 2013 and we are now seeing players who have been through the program perform at Premier Rugby level and contracted to Super Rugby teams. What the last couple of years have proven is that the Brothers Rugby program is one of the best in Australia, pushing players into professional Super Rugby and overseas contracts. This is an objective that we will continue to strive for. I would like to congratulate all Brothers players who are currently on professional contracts throughout the world, those selected in Super Rugby franchises, Brisbane City & Queensland Country NRC players, Australian Schoolboys, Queensland Schoolboys and Junior Representative teams. Brothers will only get better with your involvement over the years and we look forward to providing the pathway to professional rugby. To the Brothers Leadership Group, thank you for developing and setting a strong set of values and behaviours which has shaped our culture in 2016. The senior players accepted the junior players and loved their involvement in match days. If we continue to drive the one club culture, we can only get stronger. We continue to build a strong base of junior players who wear their heart on their sleeve every time they take the field. We are providing some awesome touring opportunities for players to travel to Sydney, New Zealand and Dubai. It was also great to see so many players take part in the Brothers 7s, the skills the players learnt during this social comp will no doubt transfer to the 15 a-side game next year. The club is working hard on a developing a Brothers style of play from u6 to Premier Grade which will provide coaches, players and parents a framework to improve skills. All players should be proud of their performances this year and we can’t wait to work with you again in 2017. I would like to personally thank all the volunteers who have contributed to the club this year, from coaching or managing to washing the jerseys and working the canteen to packing kit bags. Your help is invaluable to a club this size and without you we would not be able to provide the opportunities we do. We brought in the motto ‘The Family Club’ late last year to help recognise the entire families’ contribution to the club. You are all now part of the Brothers Family. In 2016 we ran several events highlighted by the annual June Pre-Test Luncheon prior to the English Test series in June where over 800 guests witnessed English Coach Eddie Jones predict the Wallabies defeat. We are getting to the point where nearly everything we do is about creating an event that people want to attend, whether it be events like; Carnival Day, Ladies Day, Corporate Golf Day and on a more regular basis Premier Home Matches. We are well underway with our planning of events for 2017 and are attempting to provide patrons/supporters a higher quality offering for their money. From its humble beginnings, Brothers Touch Association, has grown to over 500 girls over two seasons. We have a Brothers Touch Rep team participating in the Queensland Junior State Cup and had one player picked in Brisbane Cobras. We now also run a Sevens program for Under 10 & Under 12 players during the offseason which has over 170 players on a Thursday night. Hopefully the skills the players are learning now will one day see them don the Green & Gold for Australia at an Olympic Games. I would like to thank the Club Sponsors for their support throughout the year, your investment in the club has assisted in the improved culture and environment at Brothers. We will continue to work hard in 2017 to provide a good offering to Sponsors where they can see brand exposure and business support from our members. The club continues to invest considerable funding into the facility to provide a place that the community, sponsors, supporters, players and parents can be proud of. We still have a long list of improvements which will be
incorporated into the Club’s Master Plan for Crosby Park over the coming years. We are pleased to inform we have signed a 10-year lease with the Brisbane City Council and will attempt to make this site commercially sustainable in the near future. We remain a tenant of Windsor Park for our under 6 – under 9 teams to train and play and would like to thank St Margaret’s Anglican School for their support at this venue. Thanks to the Clubs staff whom have all worked above and beyond their duties this year. Full time staff Ben McCormack, Jason Neylon, Karen Nichols, Alan Anderson and Part time staff Amanda Stenson, Leta Dempsey, Nicole Elder, Jodie Clarke, Marcus Moloney, Yolanda Lindsay and Tracey Roberts have tirelessly worked to provide the best possible program for the Brothers community. Special mention should also go to Life Member, Des Hogan, who volunteers a considerable amount of his week to come help with the accounts. Without you all we couldn’t do what we do. Finally, to the Brothers Rugby Club Board led by Hans Pearson thank you for providing the direction and guidance throughout the year. You should be proud of your achievements in creating what is Australia’s largest community rugby club.

DIRECTOR OF RUGBY’S REPORT It was a big year for the Rugby department of Brothers in 2016. The amalgamation of clubs meant we are now one of the biggest rugby clubs in the Southern Hemisphere. Comprehensively covering the full scale of a player’s career from our “Little Brothers” Under 5’s through to Senior Grade Rugby. For the merger to begin well from a rugby perspective it was imperative we had a plan for immediate integration and a clear understanding of our desired direction, with the help of our club leadership team and premier Grade head coach Carl Marshall we went about implementing this plan from the start of preseason. The leadership group spoke at length about ways to make our junior players feel a part of the group as well as adapting or amending our “Brothers Way” leadership document to encompass not only our juniors but also our new girls playing touch. Throughout 2016 we implemented a number of programs designed to aid in the integration process including EDS Junior Skill Development Sessions, Senior Player coaching nights, and Junior Jersey presentations at all Home games, these were all highly successful but have huge capacity for continued improvement. Our performance on the field yielded some pleasing results through our 13’s to 17’s age groups with 7 out of 9 teams playing in the finals providing us with 2 premierships and the senior club achieved fantastic results with 10 out of 11 teams playing finals football, 7 gaining Grand Final births and bringing home 4 Premiership trophies. That’s 85% of teams that compete for premierships making the finals series which is a fantastic achievement, one the players and coaches should be proud of. As well as great participation numbers, we had numerous high achievers amongst the ranks.
Congratulations to the following Brothers players for their selections!
U12 Skills Development Squad: Carter Aitken, Mitchell Bodimeade, Morgan Chippendale, Harry Lane, Lington Ieli, Ned Madden, Daniel Hara, Eddie Ryan, Griffin Schostakowski, and Lewis Strachan.

Although from an outside view the club was very successful we must continue to strive for improvement so amongst other plans we are currently undertaking a full junior coaching review. After holding feedback sessions, discussing current trends and issues within the pathway, we are looking to update our program and increase the amount of support we offer our younger age groups in 2017. Finally, I would like to thank all the volunteers who gave up a tremendous amount of time to help with the running the club in 2016, your support and hard work is truly valued and appreciated.

OPERATIONS MANAGER’S REPORT The 2016 season, was our first full season under the new merged entity of Brothers Rugby Club. As the transition ran relatively smoothly a great deal of work has been implemented behind the scenes in making this a success. Some of works included 1. New entity branding 2. Consolidation of all Club sponsors, respecting current agreements (junior or senior) and positioning them in under the new club. (*As a result of these, an update of all sponsors boards, signage, playing kit and ground advertising had to be
conducted to reflect new club entity and current 2016 sponsors.)
3. Consolidation of stocks and suppliers and align procedures in relation to ordering / transferring of stocks. 4. Creation and ongoing development of a merged club operational plan and procedures. 5. Developing Maintenance and facilities plan This season commenced superbly, with great work from the Brothers Rugby Club Foundation and Anthony McDermott with the erection of the Brothers honour boards and artwork to the foyer and Green shed bar in the main clubhouse. This is a fantastic addition and great historical record of the club success over the 111 years of operation, also adds an impressive statement for members or visitors to view. Also early in the year the Brothers playing group conducted a working bee to refurbish the home change rooms increasing the size of room and install new seating. Furthermore, additional storage was added in the form of a second 20ft shipping container. Positioned adjacent to the top field, this was purchased solely to house all game day equipment (marquees, post pads, corner posts, benches, etc.), in an effort to shift equipment out of the dressing sheds and allow further space for teams. Bars and canteen sales continued to trade soundly throughout the season, with the introduction of junior clubhouse and BBQ operation during senior premier and grade games. A big thanks goes out to the Hobbits, our junior club canteen supervisors and staff who once again operated and run the bars and canteens seamlessly throughout the season. In an effort to bolster club BBQ and canteen sales and to assist with the clubs “Good sports healthy eating accreditation”, we launched the inclusion of healthy menu items this season - Chicken breast, salads (tomato and lettuce), long life fruit juices and during our offseason sevens and touch football programs we have introduced fresh sushi. Whilst these additions have added to our food and canteen menu, we also expanded our beer and wine range to offer both a premium and standard price point to catering for all markets and tastes. With over 400 registered female players in 2016 seasons of our touch football association and the addition of 180 junior seven’s players (U10s and U12s) the club continues to operate and generate income during our off season which establishes Brothers Rugby Club as a year-round community club. A true reflection of our club motto “The Family Club”. Whilst these off-season programs continue to run into mid-November the limited traffic and ground usage allows the club to commence annual field maintenance and facilities maintenance. In early October both top and bottom fields were top dressed as the first stage of field prep and further works will continue for start of the 2017 season. Also after a prolonged delay, the club is pleased to announce air conditioning has now been fitted into the Jacaranda room which now enhances our club facilities and potentially attracts further functions and events to the club. Throughout the year the club have submitted additional state government and 3rd party grants applications and we are currently waiting on advice of some successful submissions to assist in funding further facilities and maintenance works. The club has made great steps in our first year, integrating the two clubs together and like any project it’s a work in progress to make Brothers Rugby sustainable and increase the longevity for now and into the future.
Thanking You
Jason Neylon
REGISTRAR’S REPORT There was an overall Increase in Junior & Senior Registrations this season from 2015. RugbyLink registrations for the Juniors ran very smoothly with ONLINE registrations the only method available. Seniors proved more time consuming with both ONLINE and OFFLINE registrations. Two new initiatives were introduced this year with Little Brothers and Brothers 7’s. Extra registrations with two new Initiatives in 2016: • Little Brothers – 64 Participants • Brothers 7’s Jnrs (Under 10 & Under 12 Boys only) – 159 Participants (includes approx. 10% of these players from League and other clubs) The Recommendations are for ONLINE registrations only for 2017.

Season Launch & Unveiling of the NEW CLUB HONOUR BOARDS – March 2016
This was a Project that was 6 years in the making. At the Launch of the Club’s Centenary History back in 2009, Jim Tucker and I were having a quiet drink after a job well done. We started to think, that now we have finally filled in all the gaps and were able to kill off all the old myths, maybe we should put the Honour Boards back up on the Walls in the Clubhouse.
The next couple of years we looked at types and styles of Honour Boards and methods of raising the funds to complete this important part of our Club’s History. Unfortunately, we were just unable to raise the money to progress the Project.
So we went to see Crofty and the Foundation and presented the concept for the New Honour Boards and Walls, Crofty and the Foundation said yes and championed the Project.
I’d like to thank Dennis, Paul, Mark, Tom and the Foundation for funding this Project, James Briskie & Bryce Cathcart for installing & plastering the new walls and Warwick Ward, David Wicks and Breed Brand Management for manufacturing and installing the wall panels. Thank you very much.

Brothers, Queensland and Australian Rugby is mourning the loss of Michael ‘Mick’ Purcell who passed away on Tuesday 6 January at the age of 70. Following his last Test match against Ireland in 1967, a broken wrist later that year signalled the end of Mick’s Rugby career at age 21, as he made the decision to focus on finishing a law degree and moving into practice. Mick commenced his legal career with Brisbane firm Walsh, Halligan and Douglas and became a senior partner. He later joined national legal firm HWL Ebsworth where he worked up until late 2015. Mick is survived by his wife Marina, son Kieran and daughter Claire. The funeral was held on Wednesday, 13 January, at Twelve Apostles Catholic Church, 111 Yallambee Road, Jindalee at 10:30am. CLUB CAPTAIN’S REPORT
What a pleasure and an honour it has been to represent the playing group of 2016. This year has seen many successes
for our new merged club and sent us off in new and exciting directions. As a senior playing group, we have embraced the
idea of the “Family Club” and put good our word to embody the “Brother’s Way.” The culture of the club is taking on a new
form with all of our little brothers joining the fold.
Reflecting on the 2016 season, it started back in October last year with a new look preseason program that had the feeling
and look of a professional outfit. The road to victory started with intense, energetic and gruelling sessions in the summer
heat. We trialled with intent and tenacity through the opening rounds and found our spot amongst our brothers. All season
we slogged away with our mates and bled the blue and white. The result of this hard work seeing us with 10 teams playing
finals footy, 9 playing through to at least preliminary finals, 6 in grand finals, 4 Premierships and of course, lifting the
Hospital Cup. Well done bhoys you deserve it.
Amongst these victories there are yet more highlights with Brothers retaining the Flynn-Lewis Memorial Shield against
GPS and the Pilecki-Shaw Cup against Wests. We had 10 players win their 1st caps for Premier Grade including; Niko
Beuta, Stu McReight, Richie Skelton, Jeremy Skelton, George Partridge, Sam Talakai, Lukhan Tui, Elih Baillie and George
Maloney. We also had several players go onto represent the Club in both the NRC and Super Rugby competitions.
There are several other highlights this year that really stood out for me. The first is the involvement of the juniors on game
days and the massive tunnel they made for Premier Grade on grand final day. It highlights the new unity of the club and
positive impact that we can have on the development of rugby at Brothers. The second highlight was watching the big
Ernie Skelton run out onto the field with his two sons and seeing him want to flog anyone who tried to touch them. It was
special to see father and sons play together and epitomises the idea that we are the family club. And lastly, seeing Charlie
Freney run out for the Brethren for the 100th time and win the premier grade final. Charlie’s service to Rugby at brothers
over the years has been fantastic. He brings a fearless and relentless attitude to playing that lifts all the players around
him. All of these highlights and achievement would not have happened however, without the hard work and dedication of
many people.
So, thank you to all the of the coaches and managers who have toiled away all year your efforts are greatly appreciated.
Thank you to the medical staff: Ian, Gina, Mark, Mal, Katherine, Josh and Gary for all your strapping and on and off field
support, we wouldn’t keep running out every week without you. To Ricky and Luke for tolerating us in the gym all year,
thank you for your efforts with all of the strength and conditioning
To Anthony McDermott, thank you for your dedication to club and the development of the honour boards in the main entry
and Green Shed Bar. It keeps the rich history of the club embedded solidly in our minds.
To the leadership group; Daniel, Luke, Tom, Harry, Robert, Jack, David, Liam and Rueben, thank you for all your work
and support over the season. A special thankyou also has to made too Stephen Twist for his tireless work on game
organising the player’s area and firing up the boys.

A NEW CLUB RECORD
Club Legend Ernest Skelton created Club history when he took the field in the Round 7 Premier Reserve Grade game against Bond University. Ernie was playing with both his sons Richie & Jeremy in this game and upon searching the Club Archives, it was determined that this was the first time in 112 years that Father & Son had played together in this level of Grade football. This newly minted record would stand for only one week until the Round 8 Premier “A” Grade game against Wests, when all 3 Skelton’s took the field at Crosby Park. We believe that this could be the first time in Queensland Premier Rugby history that a Father and Son/Sons have played together in the “Top Grade”. To cap the season off, Ernie played in the Tour Match against the All American Collegiate team with his 3 sons, Richie, Jeremy and Lorenzo, well done Olde Bhoy. .

TEAM REPORTS
Premier “A” Grade PREMIERS, Winners of the Hospital Challenge Cup, Pilecki-Shaw Cup and
Flynn-Lewis Memorial Shield
The pre-season kicked-off in October 2015 and 80 keen men in the wider Premier Group started the hard work in the gym and on the field in the hope of glory come August. On the Friday night before the opening game of the Home and Away season Matt Mafi made his Queensland Reds debut in the Round 3 Super Rugby match against the Melbourne Rebels in Melbourne. The opening round of the 2016 Hospital Challenge Cup Premiership saw us play Norths at Crosby Park was the traditional Northside derby and the Bhoys started the season with 51 points to 20 win and Elih Baillie, Jeremy Skelton and George Partridge made their Premier “A” Grade debut. Round 2 saw the Bhoys on their first away game for the season against University for the Templeton-McLean Cup, it was an ugly game and the Bhoys went down 19 points to 13, which meant the first piece of silverware on offer for the year would stay with the Red Heavies. Pierce FitzGerald played his 50th Premier “A” Grade game and Richie Skelton also made his Premier “A” Grade debut for the Grande Olde Club. We returned to Crosby Park to battle it out with Sunnybank on the first anniversary of the death of Club Man, Iosefo Tabalala and it looked like Bellsie was keeping an eye on us and the Bhoys won the day 41 points to 27 and Mitchell Felsman played his 50th Premier “A” Grade game. Go west young man, so we headed out to Ashgrove Sports Ground for Round 4 to take on GPS, it was truly one that got away. With a kick on fulltime to draw the game, the conversion sailed wide and we went down 19 points to 17. Lukhan Tui also made his Premier “A” Grade debut for the Grande Olde Club and then went away with the Reds on their South African Tour where he would make his Queensland Reds Debut in the Round 8 Super Rugby match against the Bulls in Pretoria. Our long-standing rivalry with Souths took another stage when the Bhoys battled the Maggies at Crosby Park, it was yet another tough game against the Reigning Premiers, and this time it was the right result with the Home Team winning the day 43 points to 27. We headed into the BYE with 3 wins and 2 losses, so not a bad start to the year. Round 7 saw the Bhoys head down the M1 to take on Bond University and see how we handled the week off. Everything clicked and the Bhoys didn’t miss a beat knocking off the Bull Sharks 41 points to 22. Stefano Hunt also made his Premier “A” Grade debut and made playing footy look easy. Former Brothers Premier Grade Coach and the Australian Under 20’s had both Lukhan Tui and Angus Fowler playing in the 2-match series in May against New Zealand Under 20’s on the Gold Coast prior to the final selection of the Junior World Cup squad that would go to England in June. Our next 2 games were to be home games and the player group saw a golden opportunity to start a charge for a chance to play for the Welsby Cup. The Round 8 game against Wests also doubled as the first of Pilecki-Shaw Cup fixtures. The Bhoys were methodical and showed a ruthlessness that would be important to us later in the season and cruised to a 41 point to19 win. Sam Grasso played his 50th Premier “A” Grade game and George Moloney made his Premier “A” Grade debut against Wests and I don’t think I’ve seen a bigger smile from a debutant in the 9 years I’ve been managing this team. The game against Wests was turning into a Day of Highlights or maybe even “Skelton Day”, with Club stalwart Ernest Skelton, 2011 Grand Final Player, taking the field with 2 of his 5 son’s Richie & Jeremy in Premier “A” Grade. After searching through the Club’s Archives, we believe this is a Club Record for the highest level that a father & son have played together. This was followed by a 42 point to16 win against Easts in the last game of the First Round. This meant we finished equal 2nd on point with Souths at the end of the First Round, but because we had one less win we would miss out playing for the Thomas Welsby Memorial Cup against University. We also lost Sam Greene to a professional contract with the Toyota Industries Shuttles Club playing in the Japanese Top Flight Premiership for the 2016/17 season and the end of the Frist Round. With the start of the Second Round of the Premiership, we headed of the
Hugh Courtney Oval to take on our Northside rivals. It was a tough day at the office and the Bhoys managed to scrape through with an ugly 17 points to 16 win. Richard Skelton and Jeremy Skelton who had made their Premier ”A” Grade debuts earlier in the year, played a mid-week fixture for the Australian Barbarians against the Australian U20’s as a reward for their good form throughout the season. The Red Heavies came to Crosby Park for Round 11 and the Bhoys were keen to improve on the previous week’s performance. However, despite an improvement we just couldn’t capitalise on the chances, going down 47 points to 35. The after-match discussions were good and the Bhoys could already see that University were beatable, how prophetic this would turn out to be. The Round 12 game was a delayed Tuesday night fixture against Sunnybank and Sam Talakai was making his Premier “A” Grade debut for Brothers. The disruption didn’t seem to bother the playing group too much, the result just didn’t fall our way, going down 33 point to 29. The Bhoys headed back to Crosby Park ready for the Round 13 Home Game against GPS and the Flynn-Lewis Memorial Shield Day fixtures. The excitement built throughout the day with the previous 7 teams winning their games against GPS which meant we retained the Shield, but had a chance for a clean sweep for the day. It was disappointing that Premier Grade lost their game by 26 points to 24, but it was good that the Club retained the Shield by a total of 35 points to 7. Coming off 3 losses in a row, the Bhoys needed to look deep within themselves and work out how badly they wanted to play in the Finals. Training was good during the week and you could sense that the players wanted to go deep into the Finals window. We went across the creek to Chipsy Wood Oval to have another crack at the Premiers in Round 14. The Bhoys worked hard and started to show that ruthlessness that they had been previously building and went on to win by 34 points to 27, with Mitch Felsman continuing his try scoring spree and grounding his 50th Premier “A” Grade career try for the Club. Mitch “Curl3r” Felsman now joins his dad Greg “Curl2r” Felsman and granddad Brian “Curler” Felsman as both Premier “A” Grade player and try scorer, not too bad at all. The Club has always been proud of the large number of Fathers & Sons, Uncles & Nephews and Brothers who have played for our Club, but there’s something a little bit special about Grandfathers, Fathers & Sons. So, with a great win the Bhoys headed in the Round 15 BYE with their spirits high and looking forward to the last 3 Rounds of the Home & Away Season in anticipation. The BYE weekend also saw Taniela Tupou make his Queensland Reds Debut in the Round 15 Super Rugby match against the ACT Brumbies in Canberra. Our last home game of the year was a little bit different this year with the 3rd Annual “Battle of the Bush” fixture being played against Bond University up at Gold Park in Toowoomba. The day saw 4 grades take the field against the Bull Sharks, Premier “A” Grade, Premier Reserve, Premier Colts and Brisbane Colts 1all heading up the Range on a Road Trip. Unfortunately, it was a mixed bag in the results with only Premier “A” Grade and Brisbane Colts 1 getting up and the Bhoys winning by 35 points to 22. It was great to see young Stuart McReight make his Premier “A” Grade debut for Brothers in this game. In the penultimate round the Bhoys headed out to Kenmore for the second Pilecki-Shaw Cup fixture against Wests and it was an outstanding result with a 48 points to 14 victory to the good guys and Niko Bueta also made his Premier “A” Grade debut for Brothers. The last Home & Away game was across the creek at David Wilson Field against the Tigers. The Bhoys took good form into the game and were looking forward to the finals, but Easts were hoping to rain on our parade. It was a blessing in surprise because the Bhoys had to fight for everything and though it was a dour game, it was the best preparation for the upcoming weeks and a 17 points to 15 win was good enough. Major Semi-Final against University at Ballymore was a fantastic start to the Finals for the Bhoys. All the Media releases were telling everyone that the Red Heavies had already won 15 games in a row and the Premiership was already there’s and the other teams don’t need to turn up. This was like showing a red rag to a bull and the Bhoys were keen to show everyone how to win a Premiership. After a dominant performance and an 18 points to 10 win, they go straight through to the big dance in two weeks’ time.
Grand Final Day arrived and the Bhoys were excited, confident and knew they could knock-off the Red Heavies. This would be the 21st time the Club’s had meet in a grand Final and the table currently sat a Brothers 10 & University 10, so bragging rights were well and truly up for grabs. The Bhoys played with composure and you could see that they were never going to lose, everything University threw at them, they had their measure. The result was in favour of the good guys by 31 points to 28 and then the Hill swarmed onto Ballymore and the party started. Charlie Freney played his 100th Premier “A” Grade game and joined two Club’s in one, not only did he become a Centurion but also become only the 2nd Father & Son pair along with his dad Michael, to play 100 Premier “A” Grade games for our Club. Taniela Tupou was awarded the Tony Shaw Medal for Man of the Match in the Grand Final. The year was full of highlights but I’d just like to say thank you to the Premier “A” squad and support staff, you have a lot to be proud of. As a group, you played in our Club’s 52nd Grand Final and won our 28th Premiership and both Carl Marshal and Nathanuel Gendle now join an illustrious group as only the 13th Premiership Coach and the 19th Premiership Captain respectively. Special congratulations to all our players and support staff who were involved in the Queensland NRC teams this year, it was a wonderful reward for effort for all of you. • Brisbane City; Sam Talakai ©, Lukhan Tui, Matt Mafi, Luke Beauchamp, Criff Tupou, David Findlay-Henaway, Patrick James, Angus Fowler, Mitchell Felsman, Anthony Mathison (Ass. Despite the disappointing loss in the “big dance” the Brothers premier reserve grade had a successful season. Finishing
the season as runners up, the team can still claim to have had the best attacking record by seventy-six points and the best
defensive record by thirteen points. After winning only one of the first three matches, the team decided to use the away
game to GPS to announce to the rest of the competition how we wanted to play the game with a convincing 42-21, 6 tries
to 3 win. The victory was the start of an eleven game winning streak.
A highlight of that streak was the game against University of Queensland at Brothers, where the team turned a halftime
deficit of 10 – 21 into a fulltime victory of 53-28. Another was the match against Easts at Brothers. This was probably the
best defensive game the team had, also showing their true character as a playing group. For the majority of the match
there was only ten points difference between the sides until the final ten minutes when Brothers pulled away to win 29 –
0.
Premier Reserves would not have had the amount of success it enjoyed had it not been for the large pool of players that
came into the team at various stages. There would have only been two or three out of twenty matches where the team
that took the field was the same from the week before. It was a real credit to the players that they were still able to turn
out excellent performances every week. Congratulations to the many players who deservedly went onto play for premier
grade. Special mention goes to the following players who made their debut for the top side coming through Reggies; Niko
Bueta, George Maloney, George Partridge, Richard Skelton, Jeremy Skelton, Stu McReight and Stefano Hunt.
Thank you to Matt Kaye and the club committee for the support they have provided the club this year. The future and
development of the club is clearly in good hands. Thank you to Gina, Ian and the medical staff for their hard work in
helping the boys get back to playing and staying on the field injury free. Thank you to Greg Beaver, Manuel Cole-Manolis
and the lower grade staff for their work and support in ensuring the high quality player depth enjoyed by the club continued
throughout the season. Thank you to the premier coaching staff Carl Marshall, Ben McCormack and Brendan Gabbett for
their work and support in guiding the premier reserve grade programme and players. Their input was invaluable.
Thank you to all of the Premier Reserve Grade support staff (runners, trainers, etc.) throughout the season, team manager
Sandra Prestedge, coaching staff Des Kissane and John Gabbett for the hard work they put in every week to make sure
the boys were as prepared as they possible could be when they hit the field on the weekends. All of your work and
involvements was what created the environment the players were able to enjoy, develop and succeed in.
Lastly, congratulations to everyone involved with the club in what was a very successful and memorable season.
Congratulations to the premiership winning teams for their outstanding achievements. Exciting times lie ahead of the club
and season 2017 cannot come quick enough to start the adventure again.

Brisbane – 1st Grade PREMIERS, Winners of the Flynn-Lewis Memorial Shield
After several minor premierships and grand final appearances but without an actual Premiership... 1st grade adopted a
different attitude toward the 2016 season. We focused on defence, on the 1% efforts, week to week was not about winning
but building towards finals and about each player further developing their skills.
During the season we had 51 different starting players and a further 13 off the bench who helped 1st Grade to a
Premiership. This was a result of injuries and some excellent play with several players elevated to permanent Premier
reserve grade positions.
After the opening 9 rounds we had only one loss but we were 7th based on points conceded. This was an area of concern
and as a team we made a decision to fix it. Over the next two games we only conceded 6 points and for the final 10 games
conceded an average of only 12 points per game.
Although we lost two games on the run home we built a steely resolve in defence which put an exclamation point on our
season. In the finals everything we had worked so hard for came to fruition. In the major semi-final and grand final we did
not allow University into the game. We punished them in defence early and worked cohesively in attack to build points and
displayed a clinic in field position.
I would like to thank every single player who contributed to our premiership and also assistant coaches Pete Williams,
Greg Beaver, Brent Matchett and Manager John Diamond. It takes a whole club to win a premiership!

Brisbane – 2nd Grade Preliminary Finalist, Winners of the Flynn-Lewis Memorial Shield
Season 2016 started well with a great pre-season and commitment from a large Grade squad for all pre-season trials. It
left us with a very balanced and experienced group of players with a good mix of Colts that had moved into the grades.
We started the season at home with a comprehensive win against North’s, then started a tough run against our traditional
rivals went down to UQ in stifling 36-degree heat, rebounded with a solid win against Sunny bank. Then we were the team
of the day for Brothers at GPS with a complete performance 47 – 5, We continued to build into Round 1 until we came up
against a strong South’s team at home and where soundly beaten. We bounced back and finished the first Round in 3rd
place.
Round 2 started well with big wins over North’s and GPS again. We were the only team to beat GPS in the regular season.
Again when down to UQ at home in what was the windiest day of the last Century? With the addition of Georgdie Asprey
and Zac Harding to our team we continued to build towards the finals with very controlled and polished performance. Along
the way identifying some young talent. With the likes on Matt Burke and Sam Walters.
We went into the finals in 4th place and had a solid win against GPS in round 1, to set up a show down with Minor Premiers
South’s. We knew we would be in for a tough game.
The team played extremely well on the day with some standouts performances from Georgdie, Skip, Burkey, Zac, Blaise,
Izzie and a solo 60 meter try from DK with 5mins to go to give us a sniff at the death. As the year finished with a
disappointing 20-19 loss in the Preliminary final.
As coaches we are really proud of the effort from the group this year. Although we did not achieve what we wanted to this
year all the boys that played 2nd Grade this year can hold their heads high and come back next year to dig that little deeper
and get the result we are after.
Other standout players of note from the season, the Coaching Staff;
Set Piece/Defence Coach: Greg Beaver
Attack/Skills Coach: Brent Matchett
Manager: Daryn Shepherd
Really proud of the performance of all grades this year and the efforts put in by all Coaches, managers and the players.
This year we seemed to turn the corner and showed real club sprit both on & off the field and it showed in our results for
all grades.
The commitment to improve skill of all players was especially great to see and we continue to build as we head in top
another successful season in 2017

Brisbane - 3rd Grade Grand Finalist, Winners of the Flynn-Lewis Memorial Shield
The 2016 Brisbane Premiership 3rd grade season saw our team make a remarkable turnaround from last season. Finishing
fifth and not making the top 4 last year to beating the minor premiers in the preliminary final and then unfortunately losing
in extra time in this year’s Grand Final to University, shows how hard this team and their coaching staff have worked all
year to ensure success. Our season was disrupted, just like every other grade, quite frequently due to injury and availability
of players. With also Norths and Sunnybank not being able to field a 3rd grade squad we were subject to an inconsistent
playing draw which saw every other week being a bye for us.
We started the first half of the season quite slowly having only played 3 games in 6 weeks. We let a 14-0 lead against
GPS turn into a 19-14 loss which was a pivotal game of the first half of our season. From that loss we built a great amount
of momentum and after starting the season 0-2 we finished the first half of the season with 3 wins, 2 losses and a draw
against Souths. We started the second half of the season in similar fashion as the first half with a loss against Uni and
Souths. But after our devastating loss earlier in the season to GPS we had our revenge, winning at home, 21-17. Again
another turning point for our season and we ended the regular season on 12 games, 7 wins, 4 losses and 1 draw. We
finished 3rd overall and were carrying a 3 game winning streak into the semi-finals against GPS at Ballymore!
Throughout the entire final series, we dominated territory, our goal line defence was incredible, our forwards controlled the
breakdown and our outside backs dominated the set piece. We beat GPS 21-16 in the Semi-Final and played Souths in
the Preliminary Final. We led 12-0 until the final minute of the game where Souths scored a consolation try. We earned
our ticket to the big dance by knocking off the minor premiers 12-7.
The Grand Final!
Consistency, continuity and momentum was key to our success in the back half of the season. We had won 5 in a row
going into the Grand Final, we had the same team, for the most part, and we had players playing continuously in the same
positions. We started the grand final very well, controlled possession and we played the majority of the game in their half.
We were unfortunately unable to convert 4 separate penalty attempts and were denied a try right on half time. Uni
converted a try from a break in play in their own half, however, our defence again was fantastic and they never looked
likely from within their red zone. After Skinner converted a penalty just before full time we were 10 – 10 going into extra
time. Uni put pressure on us out wide and were able to score in both halves of extra time and we went down 22 – 10.
To draw at the end of regular time and then to lose the final in extra time is a massive accomplishment from the players
and they should all be very proud of themselves. Best forward for the season and most improved went to Brad Ollsen. The
best back was Jeremy Steven. His work rate, aggressiveness, tenacity and vision of the rugby field made him a great
asset as our scrum half. Josh Higgins, captain at the start of the season, workhorse forward, a great leader on and off the
field, was deservingly named best and fairest in his retirement season from the club. The Brothers Medal went to Bill Leal.
Bill showed tremendous leadership throughout the season, controlled the game excellently, had the respect of the entire
team and was instrumental throughout the final series.
I want to thank John Burton, Adrian Dixon, Matt Bray and Josh Borrill for all your help coaching this season. It was a
fantastic opportunity to be able coach this side and I want to thank every player for their effort throughout the season.
Making the Grand Final to only lose in extra time against University was an incredible effort and a great representation of
how successful our season really was. Finally, a massive thank you to the great club man, our manager, Stumpy!

“No greater honour will ever be bestowed on a rugby player than donning the fourth grade blue and white butcher’s stripes
of Brothers Rugby Club!” - Chris ‘Buddha’ Handy
2016 was a year where club culture was at the forefront for ‘froth grade’ in conjunction with the ambition of playing finals
football. Over 50 players participated in fourth grade for 2016. There were a number of highlights from a playing
perspective, such as making the finals, defeating traditional rivals G.P.S by over 50 points on two occasions, and ultimately
beating the ‘old adversaries’ from St Lucia by 57-5 at Crosby Park.
Brothers has always been regarded as a club with a strong culture. After each game, a carton (or more) was consumed
by the players to ensure the fostering of mateship and the participation in the off-field ‘festivities’ offered by the club. The
majority of fourth grade players would then descend to the hallowed turf on ‘Harry Shaw’ Hill to support the Brethren in
Premier Grade for each home game.
From an administrative perspective, I would like to firstly thank the coaching staff. Adrian Dixon – who, if cut, would
profusely bleed blue and white blood! Adrian coached two teams whilst assisting Anthony Mathison as Scrum Doctor for
the senior club. Matthew Bray and Josh Borrill both decided to hang up the boots in 2015 and undertake coaching roles
at Brothers in 2016. On behalf of the playing group, I thank all three of you for your contributions to the lower grades.
Praise also extends to third grade coach Geoff Davy who assisted in coaching both teams and running joint training
sessions. I also acknowledge the services of Lynn Mathers, James O’Connell, John Burton, Sandy Prestedge, Matt Kaye,
Ben McCormack and Sam Marley. Moreover, I thank former Brothers captain and on field chiropractor, Tony Shaw for
coming to games to lend his words of rugby wisdom to the lower grades. To the “Voice of Brothers” David Stokes for
venturing out to watch the team play home and away, thank you Stokesy – “Straight in…BROTHERS!”
Finally, I would like to thank the playing group. I hope each of you enjoyed a great year at Crosby Park for both fourth
grade and the whole club. Unfortunately, we did lose to a strong Souths outfit who ultimately made the Grand-Final. But
I’m sure that ignites the proverbial ‘fire in the belly’ for a successful 2017. The team’s potential was evident in a number of
games this year. With our growing number of players, along with individual and group talent, there is no reason why we
cannot repeat the efforts of this year and ultimately strive to achieve greater in 2017.

Premier Colts Preliminary Finalist, Winners of the Flynn-Lewis Memorial Shield
After a thorough preseason program over the summer months under the guidance of Premier Grade Head Coach Carl
Marshall, expectations were high for the 2016 season. With some exciting young talent joining the club & strong depth in
the Colt’s system, the coaching team had great confidence in what this group could achieve.
Building combinations & developing our systems throughout trials, the team were ready to play for points. A strong start to
the season with 4 consecutive wins, was then offset by 3 losses as we faced some injury & form challenges. Led by captain
Robby McCafferty, the boys worked hard during the week to get their season back on track and went on to win 6 of their
last 9 games whilst losing the other 3 games by a total of 6 points. Finishing the regular season in 3rd place, the boys were
ready for the challenge of finals footy & knew it was do or die as they faced off against competition heavyweights University.
After a slow start, our attack clicked into gear & the team produced their best performance of the season with a 34-7 win.
Unfortunately, we were unable to replicate this the following week, eventually losing to minor premiers Bond in the
preliminary final.
The 2016 season encompassed many personal achievements which should be acknowledged -
• North Colts Team – Harry Hoopert (injured), Latrell Soli, Emmanuel Latu, Sosifa Funaki, Rhys Martin, Reuben
Wall, Liam Richman, Lorenzo Skelton, Kailab Coventry, & Chris Morgan
• QLD Men’s 7’s Training Squad – Reuben Wall, Kailab Coventry, & Lorenzo Skelton
• Philippine National Men’s Rugby 7’s Team – Robby McCafferty, Andrew Ramsden
I would also like to congratulate those who received club awards after a great season - Lorenzo Skelton (Best Back),
Jackson Evans (Best Forward), Rhys Martin (Best & Fairest), & Will Wilson (Brothers Medal). Very well deserved lads!
Furthermore, congratulations to Robby McCafferty (Colts Man of the Year) & Rhys Martin (Colt of the Year) on your
prestigious awards.
Finally, I would like to thank all coaching staff & managers for their efforts throughout the season. Your tireless contribution
has been greatly appreciated by all!

Brisbane - Colts I PREMIERS, Winners of the Flynn-Lewis Memorial Shield
Another fantastic year for Brothers Colts rugby across the board. What an amazing year for Colts 1 finishing top of the ladder and securing the minor premiership, having scored more points and having the least amount of points scored against resulting in the best for and against record in the grade over last 3 years. All of this leading to the Grand Final weekend at Ballymore to secure the first of what would become three of the club’s premierships for the weekend and the first Colts premiership in over 10 years. All of this topped off by being award Brother’s Rugby Club “Team of the Year”, in a year that saw the mighty premier grade bring home the Hospital Cup it was very humbling for the boys and all included.
Having come oh so close last year to tasting victory the boys rallied early and ripped in throughout the pre-season. With a lot of the old band around from last year it was easy to set expectations and standards on what it would take to get to the big show. Based on our learnings from 2015, to achieve the dream we decided on a focus of building a great defensive structure that required the boys to be fit and strong. This required great commitment which the boys were more than willing to deliver on. The effort applied payed off, finishing the first half of the year undefeated having only conceded an average of 7 points per game to that point and achieving bonus point victories for all games played. The confidence and belief in the playing group indicated that nothing short of a premiership would be acceptable. The middle of the season saw Wayne Maki depart to Melbourne, resulting in Jordan Swepson stepping up to guide the backs and Blair Hart moving into the big shoes left by Wayne as forwards coach. Wayne remained a constant figure over the phone for the team and returned to guide the boys throughout the finals series. Having only one minor hiccup this year with a loss in round eleven to Uni, the boys pressed the foot firmer on the throat of the opposition by sending a massive message to the competition by locking up the minor premiership with two rounds to play by pummelling second placed Bond University in Toowoomba 50 – 15. An outstanding performance by Dom Fraser set the platform that would lead the team to the Grand Final. The finals series saw some amazing defence and spectacularly well executed tries scored by the boys. A number of the second year colt’s players stepped up to the mark and delivered, none more so than Noah Nielson and our team player award winners. All of the hard work the boys had put into the season set the tone for our Grand Final. Led out by our captain Pat Watson, for the last time, the tone was set for a massive finish to what had been an incredible year of rugby for this group. The lads pressed out hard and fast and had crossed the line for the first points of the game, the boot of Ben Bright ensured Uni would need to maximise their opportunities, which we assured were of few. In the end Uni ran out of time and puff resulting in what was a much deserved premiership to the group securing a 17-10 victory at the home Qld rugby. Special thanks to Tony Morgan for all of his help throughout the year. Thanks for the most memorable year!

Brisbane - Colts 2 Preliminary Finalist, Winners of the Flynn-Lewis Memorial Shield
The club enjoyed another very successful Colts year both on and off the field. The Colts 2 lads were very much to the fore in terms of competing hard on the field and supporting the rest of the club, whether it be on the hill at Crosby or on the hill at Ballymore. I thought one of our best achievements as a colts group was to see the sheer number of colts’ players who stormed the field at full time in the Premier Grade Grand Final. The Colts 2 year, as in previous years started with numbers well in excess of 40 players. We were able to after a few rounds apply to the QRU to have a further colts team entered into the competition. This second team did not play for official points in the Brisbane district competition. The overall Colts 2 competition had 6 competing teams and many bye weekends, where as possible ‘scratch’ games were organised. The University club were very accommodating in many of these extra games. Colts 2 had a largely successful year, falling just one game short of making grand final day. We had our chances against Easts in the Preliminary Final but could not quite finish the way we had against Sunnybank the previous week. To the young lads who due to the replacement restrictions of finals did not get the opportunity to take the field, thank you for your patience and understanding. To our front row who had very limited game time in the finals, due to the opposition declaring uncontested just prior to kick off, I also include an acknowledgement and a thank you. On a side note in my three years
with Colts 2 we have had a contestable scrum for every minute of every game and I am still yet to see a GPS Colts 2 scrum that will push. A further large thankyou to the coaching and management staff including, Dan ‘the windmill’ Dalton and Denis Rugby O’Rourke. These gentlemen were very much in the middle of teaching the playing group what it means to be a Brothers man and player. Also, congratulations to Blair Hart and the Colts 1 lads for a fantastic season and a just reward on GF day and further recognition on trophy night as club team of the year. To those players in their last year of Colts I wish you well in your future rugby years and trust you will continue to maintain either on the field or in another capacity a strong relationship with the boys from Crosby park.

2016 Normanby cup would this be the year. Pre-season training was intense, players were ripping in the sand pits of Albion to put strength in the legs and perfect tackling, goanna training to stay low, physios around Brisbane were inundated with body’s preparing for the season ahead. Old heads mixed with new, body shapes of all sizes could play this great game thin and tall to short and squat we had them all. One goal was set for the year “turn up for your mate”. Whether it be in attack or defence just turn up for your mate.
First game 15th April couldn’t arrive soon enough, the trainers and coaches had done their job it was now up to the players to perform and perform they did, brutal force thru the forwards in attack and defence enabled the backs show all their arts and crafts, gentle hands and fleet of foot, skills that were honed to perfection, would this be the year.
After round 4 injuries had started to take their toll, fractures, dislocations sprains strains and concussions. All the skill and wizardry of our dedicated medical staff was finding it difficult to patch-up broken bodies. We battled on recruited some young blood to fill the holes but more injuries followed. The rugby was entertaining but the results weren’t coming our way. This wouldn’t be our year.
To the guys that played you achieved our goal, ”turn up for your mates”, thank you.
To the medical staff Sue and Mikala thank you.
To the fans and supporters thank you.
To Brothers Rugby thank you.
Will this be our year 2017

TEAM & AGE GROUP REPORTS
Under 17 – Navy (Season 1) Grand Finalist
I would like to congratulate the bhoys of Under 17 Navy, on what was a relatively successful season given the circumstances. Under 17 is always a hard year for club rugby, given many players are in training for respective GPS and AIC seasons. 2016 drew a wide variety of players, however numbers were very inconsistent and training was somewhat difficult, and often meant playing a man down, or with the help of some under 16 bhoys. Despite this, raw talent prevailed, and the bhoys managed to make the Grand Final, unfortunately coming unstuck at the final hurdle to a well drilled Gold Coast Eagles side. Special mention must go to our award recipients for the 2016 Season: Best and Fairest: Doug Bailey Best Back: Travis Donoghoe Best Forward: Noah Burchett-Knott Brothers Medal: Angus Brodie The bhoys throughout the season consistently displayed the key values of being a Brothers man, and not only were they a talented and tough rugby team, they are also a great bunch of blokes. We hope to see all of these boys in the Butchers Stripes next year as they embrace the exact culture Brothers is trying to create. Thanks again for the year lads.

Under 17 – Navy (Season 2)
The Brothers U17 Navy team that played Season 2 of 2016 was made up of men from both U16 and U17 age groups. Coached by Mick Caruana they played in Division 2 against teams from Redlands, GPS, Helensvale, Sunnybank and Wynnum. It was a short season made up of 5 games excluding the final series, and Mick did a fantastic job of bringing together a group of men that had never played together before. With 20 players on the squad, 75% being forwards, it was amazing to see the group come together as a team, playing in positions as required (as opposed to where preferred) and week after week demonstrating the spirit of what it means to play in the butcher's stripes. While the team was unable to win a match and finished on the bottom of the ladder, it was a fantastic group to be part of and their attitudes towards the game, their team mates and their opposition exceeded what you would expect from a Brothers Rugby Team. The team was lead through season by captain Lochie Stuart, who's performance and conduct throughout the competition also saw him walk away with the Brothers Medal on Trophy Night.

Under 16 – Navy (Season 1) Grand Finalist
The bhoys enjoyed a short but none the less fun half season in the first part of 2016. Team chemistry was easy as the team had many boys return from previous years, coupled with some fresh faces and talents. Our season began in stunning fashion with a convincing 90-point win over Taylor Bridge at Crosby Park. The forwards really dominated, setting a great foundation for the backs to score plenty of tries. Next we visited Souths away at Chipsy
Wood. This was unfamiliar territory for the team as Souths had not featured in recent seasons in conjunction with an uncharacteristic loss. The bhoys battled the soggy conditions against a strong, aggressive Souths outfit, however too many errors on Brothers and Souths deserved their win. Our last match of the round saw 16 Navy make the Journey to play the Nerang Bulls on Mother’s Day. The Butcher Bhoys earned a narrow victory despite losing personal to injuries and foul play. The Bulls were a well organised and physical team and the team demonstrated well grit and determination to get the win. Due to the withdrawal of Taylor Bridge and the loss of personal through injury and suspension Brothers were faced with a do-or-die game against Nerang for a place in the Grand Final. This was a brutal encounter, which the team knew to expect from Nerang. Unfortunately for us, we lost more personal to ill-discipline and injuries, which ultimately cost us the game, and our season. Brothers Navy despite the loss, qualified for the Grand Final but due to the amount of injuries incurred, we were unable to field a full team. It was not the way this talent group of men wanted to bow out of their season. A big thank you must go to our staff, the coaches Jackson and Adrian for their efforts preparing for the boys for this and previous seasons. Also to Dan Greentree the team manager, thank you for tireless communicating and organising with parents and players behind the scenes. Thank you especially to the parents and the playing group, we hope you enjoyed the rugby played and that the boys enhanced their skills.

Under 16 – White (Season 1) PREMIERS The bhoys in the Blue and White butcher stripes are putting everything on the line to guarantee this win. Every tough training session at Crosby Park managed by Jim Campbell and coached by Elias Power has amounted to this outstanding season result as 80% of the team are Under 15’s playing up in Under16 division. Round 1 against Coomera was a nervous game with a season ending injury going to Schostakowski. Tries to; Schostakowski (2), Pescatore, H Smith and Rigney with a late penalty to Coomera producing a close loss after the Siren. Round 2 against Sunnybank saw tries through Henry Smith Angus McDonald and Josh Flook scored early in the second. Outstanding counter attacking from Tom Johnston was helping Brothers, however in the end Sunnybank ran away the game. Round 3 up against Redlands the game was physical and fiery. Try Scores; Johnston, Rigney, Smith, Coetzee and Tascheret with a 34-17. Round 4 saw a focused team putting on 70-7 points on the South's defence. Extremely satisfying due to the fact that every brother's player scored in this game. A slight fortune saw an advancement into the finals with the forwards showing grit and strength through the middle to allowed the backs - lead by Flook and Smiths twins - to pile on the points. Wins against Souths and Coomera in the Semi and Preliminary Finals saw the Butcher Bhoys take on Sunnybank in the Grand Final. Led by Captain Henry Smith against a tough Sunnybank team an inspirational speech from injured waterbhoy Schostakowski fired the boys up. Only minutes left to go in the game saw the team rise as Pescatore was brought to the ground and a dying pass been caught by Flook found the corner try and a conversion putting the boys in front. After this the boys put their bodies on the line guaranteeing the win and the Under 16 Division 2 Premiership 17-15.

Under 15 – Navy (Season 1 & Season 2)
2015 saw only one Under 15 team wear the butcher stripes of Brothers.
Season 1 saw 14 Bhoys turn up to the first training session which was pleasing to see for me and Pete Shepherd (manager). When split into forwards and backs we had 11 forwards and 3 backs and all the backs had little or no experience. Therefore, to reach the semis was seen as a good achievement. Most games we had little or no spare bodies on the bench, the most memorable game, in my view, was away against Wynnum where we came away with a draw while finishing the game with 12 men.
We heartbreakingly lost the Semi-Final to GPS by two points, the eventual Division 3 Premiers. We had beaten the same team in the regular season.
Season 2 saw us return with the loss of only three Season 1 players and picking up some new troops.
We started the season well with a 70-0 win over North Lakes Leopards, who were the Season 1 Division 4 Premiers. We were promptly moved up to Division 2. We had a mixed season due mainly to school interruptions but again made the Semi-Finals. Unfortunately drawing the match with Easts and not progressing due to an inferior for and against (5 Points).
Overall a very good and enjoyable two season and myself and the Bhoys are looking forward to completing some unfinished business in 2017.

Under 14
From what started with a shaky beginning and against all expectations, the 2014 season for the Under 14 age group ended up a great success.
With initial numbers of only 26, a strong recruitment drive was undertaken resulting in a cohort of some 38 players allowing Brothers to field 2 teams this year in Under 14’s.
The Under 14 Navy team welcomed a few new bhoys to the Club this year and were competitive thorough out the season. However, GPS commitments and an amazing string of unlucky injuries took their toll on the team’s performance. They were still able to scrape together enough wins to finish 3rd in the Division and played strongly to reach the Preliminary Finals. However, the commitment of the competition was too strong and even the help of a few Under 14 White players was not enough to convert the opportunity to make the Grand Final this year.
The Best & Fairest for the year was Oliver Horwood and Ben Hains won the Brothers Medal.
Congratulations should also go Ben Hains, Oliver Horwood, Will Jones, Ellis Mahoney and Luke Wright for making the BJRU Representation side for North.
The Under 14 White team bonded well immediately and trained hard each and every week to produce some excellent results. They finished the season equal first on points but the for/against results meant they qualified for the Finals in third. Ultimately, the Under 14 White fell one victory short of making the Grand final and were unlucky knocked out in the Preliminary Final.
The Best & Fairest for the year was Declan Clark-Murphy and Peter Fiso won the Brothers Medal.
The Under 14 also had a few boys that received their 10 Year Player Pennants for playing 10 seasons with the Club. These bhoys were Lachlan Beecraft, Alec Bodimeade, Ed Colwell, Ben Hains and Wes Stanton. Congratulations to these boys for their outstanding commitment and service to Brothers Rugby.

Under 13
What a fantastic season for the Brothers Under 13 teams! We have had the tour, a grand final showdown and many, many highly competitive games. The Under 13 Navy team was comprised of players who opted into the grading processes and was allocated to Division 2. The Under 13 White and Gold teams opted to play as per last year or with their mates and were both eventually allocated to Division 5. This created an atmosphere of ‘Brotherly’ rivalry notwithstanding an apparently greater need to win. The games played between these teams were of the highest quality and put them both into the final rounds. The White team played a huge Semi-Final against Easts but unfortunately did not make it through the round. The Gold team went through to the Grand Final at Ballymore. “It’s not every day you get to play a Grand Final at Ballymore” they were told by their coach. Fathers’ Day plus the grand final saw a huge turn-out. The boys ran on to the field through a tunnel made up of their family members. Competition was fierce but in the end Everton Park came out the better team. What a day! Some of the managers have had the following to say about their teams: Our team overcame many challenges this season including numerous injuries, juggling school commitments...this may have broken many but not 13 White! Our boys stepped up and gave their heart and soul many times our team had 13 players and managed to give our opposition a real contest! We are very proud of the way our boys showed true Brothers spirit and fought the good fight for the blue and white with fairness and integrity every game. The boys have learned so much this season which will strengthen them as players and young men in the future. (Kellie Jilani, Under 13 White) One of our biggest success factors was getting the fathers away from training and using an age relevant premier grade player. We were fortunate to have Luke Beauchamp coach the boys. A few initial issues and even losing them all one training night to a Pokémon chase were overcome. The boys really enjoyed having Luke as their coach and it also assisted with bringing interest and alignment between the Senior and Junior players and events. (Callum Stenson, Under 13 Gold) Trophy night for Under 13 was a different experience this year. No longer a day of rides, sun, sausages and sugary drinks, but a more relaxed night of awards, recognition and hamburgers (oh, and sugary drinks). We were joined by the Modified Rugby Program players and mentors for their trophy night which was a great opportunity for the Under 13 parents and boys to hear about the MRP and meet some of the boys. As you are aware, the running of the club greatly depends on volunteers. In the first instance, many thanks are to go to managers and coaches who spend a great deal of time ensuring that the season runs smoothly and that the boys have every opportunity available. Additionally, the time given by the parents of our players who on many occasions tended bar, canteen and the merch shop has also been greatly appreciated. This season saw quite a number of injuries, which as a parent isn’t something that I want to see, but as a club official puts me out into the middle of the field and on occasion into the first aid room with the ambulance drivers. It is reassuring to see the level of care and concern from all involved. I would like to take this opportunity to recognise the assistance willingly provided by medical practitioners associated with the Club – parents, officials and medics. It is such an integral and important part of the club function that is sometimes (thankfully) not required, but generally not noticed or visibly appreciated. The managers and parents were cognisant of the fact that in the 2nd half of the season most of the boys had school rugby which meant they were involved in three training sessions a week and two games. At this point some teams decided to make the training enjoyable have some games and challenges and cut the time to an hour. Perhaps consideration to a half season for under 14s could be discussed. Congratulations to all the boys for an amazing season. We hope to see you all return to the Club for the 2017 season.

Under 12
2016 was a successful year for the Under12 playing group, highlighted by a passionate and dedicated group of young men open to improving their rugby skills, team work and support for their club. U12 this year was composed of three teams. Under12 Navy competed in the Division 1 competition, while our two other teams, Gold and White, contested Division 5. Outside of the regular grading and competition rounds the boys represented their club in the now annual Mosman trip, bringing home the coveted John Eales Cup. Post season the boys also played an “International” game against Marist St Michael’s from Rotorua in a tightly contested game which resulted in draw. Our Navy Team had contested several key games throughout the year. Notably two wins were recorded against the much physically larger Sunnybank team. The bhoys showed that technique and desire to play for each other, often having to overcome a size disadvantage. A strong win over the eventually premiers GPS in the latter half of the season showed the competitiveness of this team. The coach and team management commented on the quality of the rugby this season and stated it was the best that seen from this group since being involved at Brothers. Coach, Jim Vincent did a superb job in coaching a great bunch of kids. He developed their skills and game play with a very relaxed style that brought out the best in each bhoy. Ned Maddern was the Navy’s team Brothers Medal winner. The Under12 Gold team played in Division 5 and finished the season with five wins, four losses and one draw. This saw the team finish in third place, one point off second position. The team contained a few new boys to rugby, and as the season progressed the winning streak commenced. Once eventual positions were finalised & belief in winning developed the team hit its straps resulting in five wins in a row. In the final game against Brothers White, the team demonstrated great fortitude in one the best games of the year. The game was evenly contested up until half time. The team stayed committed, and focused on competing in the second half, eventually, however, the White team ran out winners. It was great to see the two teams come together at the end of the game and celebrate a great contest. Douglas Swan was successful in winning this teams Brothers Medal. The final Under12 team was Brothers White who were named as Brother’s 2016 Junior Team of the Year. A tremendous accolade for the team, who were also Under12 Division 5 Premiers. This team showed tremendous skill development, which was demonstrated in return game at home against Eastern Districts. This was the only team to have beaten our side. This game was critical to winning the premiership. The game itself was such a great team defensive effort which wore down the East team. Brothers held less than 45% of ball possession & still came away with the win. The team defended strongly for most of the first half, when their line was not crossed. In addition, the White scrum stole a large majority of East’s feeds to the scrum contributing significantly to breaking up the East attack. Eventually some well-deserved and entertaining tries resulted ensuring the game went the way of Brothers White. A fantastic season with both coaches, Karl and Anthony, contributing to the development of all boys as individual and a team The Brothers Medal Winner for the team was Lewis Strachan. The future certainly looks bright for the 2017 U13’s, with many Under12 bhoys indicating the desire to return and build on the successful and enjoyable year that was 2016.

The start of the Under 9 season is always slightly apprehensive – the increased number of players per team inevitably leads to some ‘team consolidations’. This year two pairs of teams were successfully merged. They quickly and seamlessly merged providing the kids and parents a chance to make new friends (note to Under 8 parents in 2017 – if your team is merged, view this as an enriching opportunity, not the end of life as you know it!) ... As a result of the mergers, some of this year’s Under 9 coaches and managers were able to step back (or sideways) from their roles. Many of them had been coach or manager for the previous three years and we thank them for their hard service... it also meant that they were able to relax a bit more & enjoy watching the rugby at a slightly more leisurely pace! The Under 9 year group is responsible for organising the annual Carnival Day, which is usually held in March prior to the commencement of the junior competition matches. It’s a huge day – ‘bigger than Ben Hur’ and its smooth running requires a lot of preparation and volunteer help. We were fortunate to have Jason Shearer-Smith firmly guiding us (Jason had run the previous two Carnival Days. Carnival Day is usually quite hot (a baptism of fire), and quite taxing – particularly for the

younger kids and new parents... however it is a great day & a fantastic way for each age group to intensively prepare for the challenges of the forth coming season. The set up ran smoothly with teams of volunteers erecting a multitude of tents in no time at all. The pitches were immaculately marked out by Brendan Yantsch and Hamish Baird the night before. All the matches ran to schedule and we were lucky to have Reds players and staff with their usual array of inflatables. Positive feedback has been received from all the teams. Good luck to Hamish Baird – the lucky coordinator for Carnival Day 2017! For some Under 9 teams and players this year was the first time they took up placed positions on the field – either as forwards or backs. Most seemed to take to this like ducks to water. In the second half of the season all coaches were off the field for the first time and it was amazing to see the kids just clicking into place. One or two teams experienced some lively (robust), opponents, but on the whole the year has gone very well. Even though the kids are experiencing a much more physically demanding game everyone seems to have had a fantastic season and this has been partly assisted by the growing involvement of more senior players at the training sessions. Bring on Season 2017.

Under 8 At the end of the Under 7 season for 2015, you could see that all teams were all racing to go TACKLE in 2016! The season started with the endless tackling of the tackle bags. During the year teams gained skills in scrummaging and lineouts. I’m sure that there is a future Nathan Sharpe and Stephen Moore in these teams. The Under 8 group club roles is the annual hosting of the camp at Crosby Park. Thank you to those Under 8 parents that volunteered and special thanks goes to Patrick Gerry for his ideas, passion and the implementation of the camp. This year saw the introduction of tough brothers which saw a huge turnout. The annual poker night was held at the camp, with “donations” changing several times. Huge thanks go to the parents, guardians, coaches, refs and all the sundry supporters in making the game and season enjoyable and fun. A key to the success of junior rugby is ongoing friendships made by all. We can’t wait for the Under 9 season!

2016 revealed the strength in numbers for Under 7, having maintained the same 7 teams from the prior year Under 6’s, each team grew with additional players. The official start of the season was the Carnival Day (thanks to Under 9 for hosting) on a hot day at Windsor Park on Saturday 19th March. A real highlight for the Under 7 age group was, “Under 7 Day at Crosby” on Saturday 14th May when Brothers played Easts in Premier Grade. Kids from all seven Under 7 teams participate in two half time games on the main oval, in front of a big Crosby Park crowd, and took front position in one of Crosby’s longest tunnels, for the Premier Grade players. This was a really opportunity for the kids and parents to feel a part of the wider Brothers community, and revel in a big Premier Grade victory over Easts.
The Camp-out (thanks to Under 8 for hosting) was enjoyed by all the kids and parents, with particular congratulations to Patrick Gerry, for the additional day-time activities featuring the Junior Tuff Brudda. Under 7 White could not get enough of rugby this year, and participated in the City-Country-Surf Carnival on the Gold Coast. Trophy day certainly allowed all the kids one last catch-up with their teammates before the big break. Everyone was impressed with the new trophies. From all the games I was able to see, the kids have certainly made big improvements from Under 6. Thanks to all the Under 7 Managers, Coaches, Trainers, Referees, and every other parent who cut-up the oranges, washed jerseys, ran the sideline, helped as Field Marshall, volunteered at the Canteen or helped with the big events during the year. We hope to see you all back at the club for Under 8 in 2017… bring on tackle.

Under 6
The Under 6 teams began their rugby careers with much enthusiasm. Training nights were similar to herding cats in the first weeks but as time progressed the teams and their coaches began to find their rhythm and starting learning some of the fundamentals of rugby. The first run out for the Under 6 teams was the Brothers Carnival day, a fantastic opportunity for the boys and girls to understand the game and for the parents to grasp the concept of Under 6 Rugby. The day was hot, it was long and by the last game for the Under 6’s at 11.30am, they were definitely over it. Moving forward I would suggest that the Under 6 start earlier or only play two rounds as getting them back up for the last game was a challenge in itself. The season progressed well, some teams won a high percentage of their games, some didn’t, but all in all, they’ve all enjoyed themselves and are looking forward to 2017.

CLUB TOUR REPORTS
Senior Tour to Canada
On the 24th of September, 18 Members of the Brothers Rugby Club, jetted out from Brisbane International on route to
Vancouver International Airport for a two-week tour through the West Coast of Canada. The lads touched down early
Saturday Morning and immediately began exploring the different sights and buildings positioned throughout Vancouver. A
definite highlight for many of the guys of Vancouver was Stanley Park. With incredible scenery and wildlife galore, the
boys enjoyed seeing different animals such as squirrels, raccoon and even a skunk!
Our first game of the tour came against University of British Columbia and the boys were excited about the chance to go
up against a top school in Canada. The game was a tough slog with many of our players playing together first time, as
such, combinations were lacking. George Partridge and Dario Maruco came in with a frame of mind that was unmatched
and both thoroughly enjoyed getting the hands in a free-flowing game. Brothers winning 17-5. After that it was short flight
over to Vancouver Island (Victoria) for a two night stop over. A beautiful and historical city, the boys thoroughly enjoyed
wandering around the old city.
A game of 10s rugby ensured against James Bay Rugby Club and the game was thoroughly enjoyed by both sides. George
Moloney was superb and became the first brothers prop to receive a try assist from a box kick! Nave Fonoti showed us all
why he is hanging up the boots after being bumped too easily from one of the James Bay Players. Brothers ended up
winning 65-30. From Victoria it was time for our last stop over in Calgary. One of the definite highlights for many of the
boys was the one-night trip to Banff. With the lads loading into 4 different cars, we made the 1.5 hr trip to see the majestic
Lake Louise, before spending a night in the freezing cold of Banff. Some of the boys were lucky enough to see a deer and
happily named him Eugene.
Our last game, and definitely our toughest, was against the Calgary Hornets. In a tough game, played at 0 degrees and
3000m above sea level, David Corbenici showed all his skills with some strong runs and the big left hand fend. A big
thanks to the guys from Calgary Saints who came and had a run with us and got to don the famous Butcher Stripe. Brothers
ultimately won the game 51-33. It was great to do the Brothers name proud and come away with 3 wins from 3 games.
The obvious highlight of the trip was many of the Lads was attending an ice hockey game and getting to see the Calgary
Flames in action. The boys thoroughly enjoyed this brutal sport and many of us we're glad we chose rugby. It was a great
trip that all on tour thoroughly enjoyed.
A few thank you's are in order cause a trip like this does not happen overnight. To Nave Fonoti for all his fundraising efforts,
whether poker night or Fundraiser at Miss Kaye's Nave went above & beyond in his efforts to fund raise. A thank you to
Neill "Buckwheat" Johansen for organising all the games in Canada and liaising with the local Canadian teams. To Debbie
Gray from MTA travel agents who organised our flights and hotels. This trip would not have been possible without her
behind the scenes. To Simon Price who organised the tour and got it off the ground and running. To Moray & Agnes
lawyers who were our major sponsors for the tour. To all the boys who came on tour it was a fantastic thrill and something
that I will never forget. Lastly, to Matt Kaye and Brothers Rugby Club for helping with controlling the funds and allowing us
the opportunity to experience the world through our love of rugby, I thank you.
It was an incredible trip filled with memories and highlights that I, and all of the boys on tour, will carry with us for the rest
of our lives. I hope they're more opportunities for the club in the future to travel around the world and experience this world
through the great game.

Under 13 Tour to New Zealand
In September 2016, Brothers Rugby Club undertook its inaugural Under 13 New Zealand Rugby Tour.
Twenty-two players and five tour managers toured both Christchurch and Queenstown for a series of rugby games and
touring activities. The tour included two nights in Christchurch staying at the Christchurch Football Club with its motel on
site and playing against the under 13 team. The boys visited Malvern Park and a closed Canterbury (Mitre 10 Cup) team
training session.
The tour then moved onto Queenstown to participate in the annual Queenstown Rugby Festival organised by Global
Games for under 10’s to under 13’s. The team won a number of games, had a draw and a number of losses, which made
it a very enjoyable contest.
The Brothers New Zealand tour was open to anyone in the under 13 age group and was not a graded team. We had a
good even spread of boys across the three graded u13 teams from Brothers in 2016.
The cost of the tour was $2500, but after fundraising and sponsorship the player cost was reduced to $1950. Absolutely
everything including, flights, accommodation, meals, tour jersey, tour shirt, tour jacket, tour bag, jet boating, rafting, rugby
and $120 spending money was included in this package. Fundraising was a compulsory component of this tour.
The tour was run on TeamApp, which did a fantastic job of keeping players and supporters informed of activities. The
Brothers Facebook page was used for social media exposure to the wider club base.
Unlike the Under 12 Mosman Tour parents and supporters were not included in the organisation of this tour, but were
encouraged to join us in Queenstown for the rugby and tour activities if they wished.
The boys toured extremely well together and formed new friendships across the group. They had plenty of opportunity to
mix with other teams and enjoyed freedom in a safe environment that under 13 boys relish.
A review paper will be submitted to the Junior’s committee for their consideration, but tour organisers, Richard Smith and
David Clark, believe there is a great formula for a tour which should be set up in perpetuity for the under 13 age group.

Under 12 Tour to Sydney
For the second year running, the Brothers Under 12’s toured Sydney to compete for the John Eales Shield against the
Sydney Mosman Whales over the weekend 15th to 17th May 2016. The aptly named shield signifies John Eales’ Club of
Brothers and his current local Rugby club of Mosman. The 44 lads, who were an even mixture of the three Under 12
Brothers teams Navy, White and Gold, were keen to see the Shield head north after a heartbreaking one-point loss in the
last minute of the final game of the inaugural year.
The John Eales Shield is decided by cumulative points of the 4 halves of rugby played on Sunday at Rawson Oval between
the two Brothers Teams and two Mosman teams. The two Brothers teams named “Brothers Eales” and “Brothers Shaw”
accumulated 57 points over the 4 games, easily accounting for Mosman’s 36.
Results were as follows:
Brothers Eales 12 defeated by Mosman A 17
Brothers Shaw 19 defeated Mosman B Nil
Brothers Shaw 7 defeated by Mosman A 12
Brothers Eales 19 defeated Mosman B 7
The Tour started on Friday afternoon with an Alliance Airlines charter flight for the boys along with the 48 strong supporter
group of tour leaders, parents and siblings. The boys were billeted with the Mosman families and the parents and
supporters accommodated at the North Sydney Harbour View Hotel. The tour cost for each boy was less than $400 and
included the return charter flight, accommodation, meals, activities, tour bag, jersey and uniforms. The pricing was after
the generosity of corporate sponsors and the compulsory fund raising efforts of each of the touring boys.
On the Saturday, the boys enjoyed a Ferry Ride to take in the sights of Sydney Harbour followed by the tour highlight in
many of the boy’s opinions ... the Harbour Jet Boat ride. Following a lunch overlooking the Harbour Bridge and Opera
House, the boys were loaded into coaches to travel to Mosman’s Balmoral ground which has to be one of the most
picturesque grounds in Sydney alongside the Esplanade of Balmoral Beach at Mosman.
The warm-up Round Robin event was dominated by Brothers who scored 85 points to Mosman’s 5. The event was also
to be attended by Hunter’s Hill Rugby Club who unfortunately had to withdraw. But this gave the two Brothers teams the
chance to play against each other which was arguably the best game of the weekend, won by Brothers Shaw 7-5.
The Saturday was rounded off with a trip to Allianz Stadium to participate in the Junior Rugby Club March-Past prior to the
kick off of the Waratahs versus the Bulls Super 15 game. The boys were seen on the big screen at the ground and on Fox
Sports coverage on National television.
The ultimate aim of the tour is for the boys, parents and supporters to unite as a Brothers Club rather than just being part
of their weekly team. From all reports, many lifelong friendships have been formed and is a much talked about tour amongst
the younger Brothers fraternity, who eagerly await their turn to tour Mosman and bring home the John Eales Shield.

MODIFIED RUGBY PROGRAM (MRP)
What an exciting year 2016 was for the MRP at Brothers!
The MRP is a world first, modified form of touch only rugby where each boy or girl with a learning and perceptual disability (MRP Players) has their own club PlayerMentor on the field supporting them. The MRP aims to move boys and girls with learning and perceptual disabilities off the sidelines and into the main game. Through the GingerCloud Leadership Program, PlayerMentors are nurtured and supported as they develop into a generation of young people for whom disability is normalised.
The MRP was created by GingerCloud Foundation (whose co-founders are a family from Brothers Megan and Anthony Elliott) with the support of the QRU and was piloted at Brothers in 2014 with 1 team of 16 participants. Now in 2016 there are 160 MRP participants across 8 teams and 6 Clubs in South East Qld.
This year Brothers hosted both an MRP team as well as a world first MRP 7s pilot team. The MRP 7s is a new, modified form of Viva 7s which allows the MRP Players who are ready to progress, to move into this faster, more independent form of the game. In the MRP 7s there are still modifications to the game and support provided however the MRP Players participating no longer require one-on-one PlayerMentor support as in the MRP team. Like the MRP, the MRP 7s is a mixed form of the game so it was great to see young women on the field as well. The MRP 7s creates a long-term pathway for inclusion for boys and girls with learning and perceptual disabilities.
A highlight of the MRP season is the opportunity to play at Suncorp and this year both Brothers MRP and the MRP 7s team played at half time during the Reds vs Sunwolves match in May. It was such an exciting day and it was a thrill for the teams to be part of the 160 MRP participants who played at Suncorp that afternoon.
For the PlayerMentors, the PlayerMentor Leadership Evening with MRP Ambassadors Nathan Sharpe and Tim Horan is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn about leadership and gain rugby skills from ex Wallaby Captains and rugby legends. This year, Crosby Park played host to more than 80 PlayerMentors from 8 MRP teams across South East Qld and it was a great thrill that the boys and girls from USQ Toowoomba were also able to participate in the evening. They were lots of selfies (with the parents as well!) so it was a very special evening for everyone involved. Both Nathan and Tim have been involved with the MRP as Ambassadors since the 2014 pilot at Brothers and their support continues into 2017.
To add another level of excitement to the season, in June World Rugby video producer Rich Melton filmed a wonderful documentary about the MRP at Brothers. He followed the Chesterman family whose son Matthew has played in the MRP since 2014. The documentary was aired globally as part of the #RugbyBuildsCharacter campaign. Here is the link to the World Rugby website: Moving Story of Modified Rugby
In October, the MRP was honoured at the John Eales Medal Awards Night and was recognised through the Nick Farr-Jones Spirit of Rugby Award. To cap off a thrilling 2016, Megan and Anthony Elliott were invited by World Rugby attend the World Rugby Awards in London on November 13 where the MRP will be recognised.

BROTHERS TOUCH ASSOCIATION
2016 has seen Brothers Touch Association grow to over 500 girls playing under the Brothers club banner. It has been a fantastic year, achieving many of our goals in our first full official year of competition. We saw our inaugural Brothers Representative Team – “Sisters in Arms” playing in the QLD Touch Football Junior State Cup, record number of players with our numbers near doubling, our first ever player selected for higher representative honours and a record number of referees participating in level 1 courses.
Our numbers continue to grow, making us one of the biggest Girls Only competitions in Australia. Season 1 2016 saw 20 teams enter our competition with 33 teams taking the field in Season 2 from age groups under 10 to over 14s. We run 3 time slots with each time slot at capacity.
One of our major goals for the club is to be a competitive force within the Brisbane area. To give North side players an opportunity to compete in a safe and encouraging environment with a potential representative pathway. An U12 Brothers Touch Representative team was selected in March and participated in several pre-tournaments before heading to Hervey Bay to compete in the QLD Junior State Cup. This was an amazing experience for all girls and families and we look forward to entering more teams next year. From this tournament, we had some Brothers players selected for the Brisbane Cobras regional team. This is an exceptional achievement and showed the bigger clubs that Brothers Touch are on the way up.
Registrations for season 2 exceeded our expectations with over 340 players signing up to play. To see so many fit and active girls taking part in organised team sport every Friday is a dream come true for administrators. The atmosphere is buzzing; it gives families the opportunity to be involved in Brothers as a club at all different levels. “Sisters” are now members of Brothers and belong to the legendary club in their own capacity. The girls can wear their pink B cap, their pink butcher stripes and their customized Brothers Leggings. We have worked hard on creating Brothers merchandise for the girls that keeps in with the traditional symbols of the club.
I would like to thank all players, families, referees and coaches for their support throughout the year. The fun and social environment we have created, is a credit to everyone and we couldn’t take the field each Friday without you all. From the running of the kids on the field and coaching after school to the dropping off and picking up and all the cheering and encouraging.
As we move forward and put our policies and procedures into place, we will continue to grow and develop and make Brothers one of the top affiliates in Brisbane. While doing this, we will never forget the reason that we are here. To provide our daughters with an opportunity to play sport in a supportive community, where the ultimate outcome is fitness, health, friendship, lifestyle choices with a competitive spirit and to belong to the Brothers family. Watch out for our girls in the pink and Navy butcher stripes in 2017

retrospective application of the accounting policies adopted in these financial statements.

Events Occurring After the Reporting Date
No matters or circumstances have arisen since the end of the financial year which significantly affected
or may significantly affect the operations of the Association, the results of those operations or the state
of affairs of the Association in future financial years.
Critical Accounting Estimates and Judgements
The Management Committee evaluate estimates and judgements incorporated into the financial
statements based on historical knowledge and best available current information. Estimates assume a
reasonable expectation of future events and are based on current trends and economic data, obtained
both externally and within the Association.
Key estimates
Inventories
i. As a consequence of the amalgamation of the clubs and change in logos all inventories carrying
the old club logos have been written off and represented in the Impairment to Inventories. It is
anticipated that these items will need to be sold at discounted rates or given away as part of
club promotions.
Investments
i. The club owns an asset being a perpetual membership at Ballymore. The historical cost of this
asset is $10,000. The lack of a ready market for this asset and the diminishing economic benefits
following the reduction in games being played at Ballymore an impairment loss of $9,999 has
been raised to record the carrying value at $1. This determination will be reviewed annually,
and adjustments made in future periods if future market activity or estimate of future economic
benefit indicates that such adjustments are appropriate.
Property Plant & Equipment – useful life
Buildings and leasehold improvements
i. Crosby Park – during 2016 the Association signed a 10 year lease with Brisbane city council.
There is no expectation that the lease would not be renewed at the expiration of the lease
term. As such the Management Committee consider a 50 year useful life appropriate for
buildings and leasehold improvements.
ii. Windsor Park – in 2014 the previous junior Association signed a licence agreement with St
Margaret's Anglican Girls School for access to the shared grounds and facilities at Windsor Park
for all U6 to U9 games and training, U10 to U12 training and Association Events. The term of the
agreement is 15 years and an annual licence fee is payable by 30 June of each year. There is no
expectation that the lease would not be renewed at the expiration of the lease term.

2015
Adopted accounting policy to impair all merchandise with old club
logos. Junior had implemented this policy, Senior's balance sheet did
not apply this policy.
Adopted accounting policy to raise accrual for all expenditures. Accrual
for payroll, interest payable and grant expenditure not yet expended.
Adopted accounting policy, change of useful life of leasehold
improvements and other plant, immediate write off for all items of cost
below $2,500
Eliminations are represented by charges between the Senior club and
junior club for lease/rent of Crosby Road, recorded as a cost in Juniors
and income in Seniors
The Senior club 2015 annual performance was recorded as a 13 month
period from 1 October 2014 to 31 October 2015. Senior club had an
accounting policy to net revenue and expense items (for example event
revenue was recorded as the net of revenue less expenses). The
accounting policy in these accounts and the Junior accounts is to show
gross revenue and gross expenses. The 2015 Senior Club results have
been adjusted to reflect the application of this accounting policy.
Change in accounting policy, raise a provision for doubtful debts as at
reporting date
Change in accounting policy, raise a provision for employee
entitlements and annual leave. Juniors had no full time employees, all
casuals or contractors, Senior's balance sheet did not accrue leave
entitlements for CEO, and facilities employees.
Revenue from Southside Bingo investment was $31,478 less in 2016
due to a decrease in the performance of the bingo operations and a
debt reduction policy in SSUT in preparation for redevelopment planned
for 2017 (Bingo $24,367 : 2016 $39,997 : 2015, SSUT $24,050 : 2016
$39,898 : 2015)
