premier week 14 reviewHamilton Marist 34 – Melville 29 Lodge City Rentals Hamilton Marist edged past TDO Melville at Collins Road with an entertaining five tries to four win. The momentum swung between the two teams throughout the 80 minutes, with the match also briefly swapping fields due to a serious injury, and the action continued right to the final whistle where the Marist defence denied a late Melville surge to secure the win. Marist got off to a flyer with a try just 50 seconds into the match. The visitors moved the ball into space after the kick off and wing Leigh Bristowe finished well down the right sideline. After the initial set back the home side worked their way into the match and enjoyed a long period of good territory. They eventually turned their field position dominance into points with a pick and go try close to the line from prop Josh Iosefa-Scott. First five Beaudein Waaka added the extras. Waaka and Marist halfback Michael Walsh traded penalty goals to leave Melville 10-8 in front with 10 minutes to play in the first half.Melville then struck again when they worked the ball to the blindside and a good inside pass from wing Harry Lafituanai found loose forward Timoti Marr who dotted down. Then with just a few minutes left in the half a serious ankle injury to Melville flanker Dan Bowater halted play. His opposite number - Marist flanker and doctor Luke Karalus - was quickly on the phone to get an ambulance. There was a long wait for the ambulance and the decision was eventually made to move the game to the number two field. When play finally resumed the first half was played out with no more points, Melville in front 17-8. Marist started the second half a lot better and after stringing together several phases on attack second five Jordan Payne produced a nice offload for wing Niko Malo to score. Just minutes later Marist were in again when a ruthless driving maul proved unstoppable and hooker Logan Daniels scored the try as the green and white forwards surged over the line. All of a sudden Marist were back in front and looked likely to add to their lead as they moved into the Marist half once more with Melville outnumbered down the right wing. But Melville wing Luke Masirewa plucked an intercept at a crucial time and raced 60 metres to score under the posts to send Melville back into the lead. Melville then crossed for their bonus point try when a great kick chase pressured the Marist cover defence and a brilliant pass in the tackle from replacement first five Jonnie Te Ruki saw second five Tevita Taufui score in the right hand corner. After the try, with Melville in front 29-20 and 20 minutes left in the match, the decision was made to move back to the now clear number one field with number two cutting up quite badly. The change in field seemed to suit Marist who quickly scored a well worked try to Bristowe, his second for the game and ninth for the season, to bring Marist right back into the contest. Marist continued to apply the pressure but the desperate Melville defence denied them on several occasions. Then with just four minutes left on the clock Marist moved the ball wide from a set piece and Niko Malo managed to get over the line for his second try to give Marist the lead once more. The action continued as Melville swung back onto attack and a yellow card for Marist made it even harder for them as it was now their turn to try and hang on in defence. Melville spent the final few minutes hammering away at the Marist line and went agonisingly close more than once, but it was not to be for the home side as a dropped ball brought the thrilling match to an end with Marist hanging on for a five point win.

University 29 – Fraser Tech 13 Metalco Recyclers University continued their recent good form with a bonus point win against Fraser Tech at Mill Street. Sekope Lopeti, Hame Faiva, Louis Rogers and Malcolm McLeod scored for the visitors, with first five Jason Robertson kicking nine points, as they recorded their fourth straight win which moves them into third spot on the table. Fraser Tech’s points came from tries to prop Jamie Vette and wing Jesse Rihari, and a penalty from fullback Brando Va’aulu. Hamilton Old Boys 30 – Hautapu 15 The Local Hamilton Old Boys registered an important bonus point win over APL Direct Hautapu at Memorial Park which keeps them right in touch with the top four sides. The competitions leading try scorer, Old Boys wing Regan Ware, added two more to his season tally which now stands at 11, with Chiefs midfielder Seta Tamanivalu and hooker Solomone Tukuafu getting their other tries. Hautapu scored a try in each half to halfback Ruan du Plooy and loose forward Luke Jacobson, but Old Boys took their chances better throughout the match which proved the difference. Otorohanga 41 – Morrinsville Sports 3 After a lacklustre effort the week before against United Matamata Sports, OTC Otorohanga produced one of their best performances of the season with a dominant bonus point win over Nottingham Castle Morrinsville Sports at Island Reserve. The competition leaders scored five tries to flanker Murray Iti, fullback Te Amo Wilbore, wing Solo Korovata, lock Tom Snowden and replacement Tu Waqa. Wilbore converted all five tries and kicked two penalties to take his season tally to 173. Morrinsville were never really in this one and a first half penalty from Josh O’Flaherty was to be their only scoring of the day. Te Awamutu Sports 27 – United Matamata Sports 23 For the second week in a row Reid & Harrison United Matamata Sports very nearly got their first win of the season with another strong second half performance, this time against Ecolab Te Awamutu Sports at Bedford Park. Te Awamutu raced out to a 24-3 halftime lead with tries to wing John Collier, centre Denzil Manu and flanker Christin Kelleher, but managed just a penalty in the second half as Matamata stormed back into the match. The home side crossed for four second half tries - to hooker Scott Robinson, lock Michael Peters, Number 8 Alex Bradley and second five Jamie McIntyre, to win the second half 20-3, but all their tries went unconverted which proved crucial in the end.

Hamilton Marist wing Leigh Bristowe on his way to scoring the first of his two tries against Melville at Collins Road last weekend.

Q. How are players signed by the Waikato Rugby Union distributed to the clubs? The Waikato Rugby Union has facilitated 12 players into the premier competition this year. This has mainly consisted of schoolboys signed to the Waikato Rugby Union Academy. A process was entered into which involved the premier clubs indicating which players could be of benefit to them and how they could help the boys with part time jobs etc. Seven out of the ten clubs entered into this process and the players were spread relatively evenly. The spread of players was 50/50 between rural and city clubs.
