Simo Mketso, general secre- tary of the South African Na- tional Civic Orginisation (SANCO), who led the protest, read out the complaints to the mayor and gave her 14 days to respond. Mketso said they ur- gently require a high school and handed over a letter from the Western Cape Department of Education which states that the department is waiting for the Langeberg Municipality to identify land on which to build a school. Mr Soyisile Mokweni, mu- nicipal manager, said however that he has not received any communication from the de- partment regarding a request for land. He thanked the com- munity for bringing this matter to his attention. Mokweni told the Gazette last week that he believes the pro- test was politically motivated. He said the protesters had their own agenda and were driven by “certain political parties”. He labelled the protest an effort to intimidate the mayor. He explained that the grie- vances do not fall within the municipality’s mandate, but are rather the mandate of the provincial government. Mokweni believes this pro- test will have a “domino effect” with more protests likely to fol- low in other towns in the mu- nicipal area. “It is part of a strategy to make the muni- cipality ungovernable.” Mketso denies allegations that the aim of the protest was to intimidate the mayor. He says that although the ma- jority of protesters support the African National Congress (ANC), and would like to see the ANC in a position of power in the Western Cape, the protest was “to show the mayor that we are not happy with service de- livery in the Langeberg re- gion”. Animal abuse rife in LangebergDALEEN FOUCHÉ

FIVE badly neglected and malnou-rished dogs were confiscated bythe Winelands Society for the Pre-

vention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA)within the space of only two weeks. Thishas sparked concern and a new strategyby the Winelands SPCA.

A small dog was recently fished out ofa river by members of the communityand brought to the SPCA.

Ms Lesley Beviss-Challinor, investi-gator for the SPCA, says although thereis no proof, she suspects that the dog wasthrown into the river because of itsneglected condition. The rescuers of thedog have adopted him and named himLucky. “He has made a full recovery, buthis coat still needs to grow back.”

Anotherdogwasrescuedwiththehelpof the community after residents in-formed the SPCA of a neglected dog intheir neighbourhood in Robertson. Thefemaledog foundby theSPCAhada seri-

ous skin condition which had been leftuntreated. The dog was confiscated andthe owners were given a warning letter.

The whistle-blowers adopted the dogand named her Hope. Beviss-Challinorsays it will take a long time for Hope torecover from her skin disease.

Two more dogs were confiscated bythe SPCA, but were too badly neglectedand had to be eutha-nased. Beviss-Chal-linor says the ownersof these dogs were giv-en a warning by theSPCA and “will bemonitored”. She saysthat if these previous owners are foundinpossessionofananimal, theSPCAwillapproach the magistrate for a court or-der toprohibit themfromowninganani-mal. A fifth dog was confiscated lastweek. Beviss-Challinor says Simba hadbeenstarvedandneglectedandaddsthatthe owner is to be prosecuted. “DespiteSimba’s history, he is a gentle, sweet dog

andneedsa lovingnewhomefor therestof his life.”

Currently two people are doing com-munity work as punishment after beingfound guilty of cruelty to animals. Be-viss-Challinor says one of them is cur-rently doing 100 hours of communitywork over weekends at the WorcesterSPCA. “I think they are learning their

lesson.”Beviss-Challinor

says these incidentsare cause for concern. The SPCA embarks ona new strategy thisweek to help more ani-

mals with the help of volunteers. Previ-ously the SPCA would patrol areas, es-peciallytownships,withacar.Butstart-ing this week, volunteers will go fromhouse to house to inspect animals andenquire about abused animals. Beviss-Challinor reminds people that animalabuse is against the law and that trans-gressors will be prosecuted.

Simba was found malnourished.

Lucky has found a new, loving home.

Vandagspogdiekliniekmet ’nTB-toetskamer, ’n beradingskamer entwee konsultasiekamers.

Die McGregor-kliniek is opgegra-deer teen net minder as R1 miljoen.

The new face of medicineDALEEN FOUCHÉ

THE new manager of medical ser-vices in theDepartmentofHealth’sLangeberg subdistrict is a “pas-

sionate” and highly experienced doctorwhohasalreadystarted tomakeimprove-ments in the area.

Dr Luise Lunnon took up her new postlast year in June and has since been re-sponsible for the Robertson and Montaguhospitals, and the seven clinics and fivemobile clinics in the area.

Lunnon obtained her medical degree atthe University of Stellenbosch and star-ted her professional career at the Worces-ter Hospital. At the time, she was the onlyfemale doctor there.

After nine years she accepted a post atthe Cape Winelands District Municipali-ty and later the provincial Department ofHealthas thedirectorofhealth for thedis-trict.

During this time she established 34 cli-nics within the district municipality, in-cludingtheBergsig,BonnievaleandMon-

tagu clinics.Since Lunnon’s arrival in Robertson,

she has established and filled three newdoctors’ posts and introduced a new spe-cialist to thearea.Shehasalso introducedtwo new mobile clinics.

Lunnon says a big challenge of her newpost is to amalgamate the Robertson andMontagu hospitals into a single unit withtwofacilities.Shesaysspacewithinmedi-cal facilities is another big challenge inthe Langeberg municipal area and wel-comes the new renovations planned forthe Robertson Hospital.

Lunnon says her goal is to re-establishan operational hospital board for the Ro-bertson Hospital, which last had one in2008. She says that the hospital has ap-proachedpeople for thepositions, buthasnot yet been able to establish a board.

Lunnonsaysit isempirical thatahospi-tal has a board consisting of members ofthe community inorder for thecommuni-ty to have input into their medical struc-tures. “A board keeps the hospital ac-countable and patient orientated.”

Lunnon, who liveswithherhusbandonafarmbetweenRobertsonandWorcester, says that since she took up het new post, she has received a “warm welcome” fromthe community. She says she loves theshops in Robertson and no longer goes toWorcester to do her shopping. “I have on-ly had positive experiences with the staffand patients.”

Lunnon says that since she started, therehavebeenveryfewcomplaints frompatients. She says the hospital, however, has received several complaints regard-ing bills.

Lunnon explains that the RobertsonHospital is transferring toanewaccountssystem, which has caused various mis-takes to slip in, but assures the communi-ty that the hospital is paying attention tothis problem.

Lunnon says all clinics and the hospi-talshaveabox forcomplaintsandcompli-ments, and she welcomes both.

Lunnon says her goal is to make allmedical facilities in the Langeberg areapatient orientated and friendly.

Titanic-fassinasieOP12Aprilvanjaarwasditpre-

So, hoekom bly die ramp steedsmense se verbeelding aangryp? Dit bly ’n enigma vir my.

The surrounding grounds at Ashton Kelder are perfect for a picnic.

Ashton Kelder and its beautiful grounds.

Ashton Kelder’s rich history

ASHTON KELDER cele-brates its 50th birthdaythis month, looking back

on an interesting history. The town of Ashton owes its

existence to the railway stationestablished in 1887 by Cape Cen-tral Railway on the farm Roode-wal. A number of farmers, main-ly bordering on Ashton, Bon-nievale and Robertson, consid-ered establishing a co-operativecellar to cater for their needs.

The idea found favour and onMay 10 in 1962 an inauguralmeeting was held, at which itwas decided to proceed. So en-thusiastic were the proponentsof thescheme, that farmerscamealong with money in their pock-ets which they eagerly handedover to get the ball rolling, with-out even asking for a receipt.

Ashton Co-operative WineCellar was launched with 28members and a board of direc-torswaschosenwithMrP.P.Jor-daan as chairman.

A site for the cellar was select-edandJordaantransferredawa-ter right, which he enjoyed froma Brandvlei irrigation canal, to

the Co-op since the ground onwhich the cellar was to be erect-ed had no other source of water.

Almost immediately, workwas begun on digging trenchesto carry a pipeline to the sitewhere therehadpreviouslybeena quarry.

TheLandBankwasapproach-ed for a loan, which was initiallyrefused, but the bank under-esti-mated the farmers’ determina-tion. When bank officials oneday by chance heard the an-nouncement on the regionalnews service that water wasgushingout of thepipeline in theoldquarry, theyrelentedand theloan was granted.

Bythe timethecellarwasbuiltin 1963, there were 46 memberswhodeliveredatotalof2 130 tonsof grapes. With the commence-ment of the 1964 season, therewere 56 members and 5 790 tonswere pressed. In the 1968 season10 000 tons were pressed.

One of the problems at Ashtonwas the considerable quantity ofgrapes being produced whichwere not suitable for vinifyingbecause of low sugar content. To

deal with these grapes, it was de-cided to use them for the produc-tion of grape concentrate. Themost up-to-date machinery forthis purpose was imported fromWest Germany during 1971.

Approximately 70 000 hectoli-tresof juice is converted tograpeconcentrate annually.

The product found great fa-vour and the quality was consid-eredsogood, thatvirtuallyeverywine producer uses it for thesweetening of semi-sweet wine.

Ashton wines have won nu-merous awards at various wineshows. The Co-op currently han-dles 45 different grape varietiesand bottles an extensive range ofwines for sale to members and tothe public. It also offers a pinkMuscat de Hambourg sparklinggrape juice.

The grape intake normallyamounts to 20 000 tons, producedby 60 farmers, making it one ofthebiggerco-operativecellars inthe Western Cape operating un-der one roof, an example of whatcan come from small beginningswith a spirit of co-operation andthe will to succeed.

Warm up with winter winnersBY DANIQUE FULLARD

IN an almost unrecognisable andmysterious way, winter alwaysseems to lure me into a totally differ-

ty flavours in summer has been com-pletely consumed by a desire for richer, deeper colours and heartier, warmermeals.Reds, orangesandearthybrownsfillmywinterpalate, soonthemenuthisweek are colour-inspired meals.

Roasted butternut soup with Camem-bert

(Serves 4))) 2 red peppers, halved and seeded)) 800 g butternut, cubed)) 1 head of garlic)) Olive oil)) 50 g butter)) 2 medium onions, chopped)) 120 ml dry sherry)) one litre vegetable or chicken

stock)) 250 g streaky bacon, chopped and

grilled until crisp)) 1 ripe Camembert round, cut into

wedgesPlace the red peppers and butternut

into a roasting pan. Slice the top off the

garlic to expose the flesh, and then addto the pan.

Drizzle the vegetables with olive oiland roast at 200°C for 20 to 30 minutesor until tender. Remove from the ovenand press the flesh out of the garlicskins, and then discard the skins. Heatthe butter in a saucepan. Sauté thechopped onions until soft and add thesherry and the vegetables. Cover andsimmer over a low heat for 15 minutes.

Transfer mixture to a food processorand blend until smooth. Otherwise, transfer toadishandblitzusingablend-stick. Return the mixture to the sauce-pan and add the stock.

Bring to the boil, then reduce the heatand simmer for ten minutes. Season totaste with salt and pepper. Top eachserving of soup with crisp bacon piecesandwedges ofCamembert and serve im-mediately.

To go with that, living in the beautifulBreede River Valley presents a myriad

of winter activities which I feel inspiredto embrace this year.
