At 3.00% APY, it’s the perfect time to open a Harborstone BreakFree Checking account!

Harborstone Credit Union makes it easy to earn money. When you meet the qualifications, a BreakFree Checking account earns a competitive 3.00% APY, one of the highest in the nation, on balances up to $20,000. No other financial institution in the country is offering an annual percentage yield this high on balances of those amounts.

Here is how it works:

• Simply make 12 debit card/POS transactions of $3 or more each month.

• Sign into Online Banking once per month.

• Have one direct deposit or automatic ACH withdrawal per month.

And you’ll never pay another U.S. ATM withdrawal fee. Ever. It’s true. Non‑Harborstone ATM surcharge fees are refunded monthly when you meet the qualifications. Harborstone ATMs are already free, so we’ve extended this benefit to make BreakFree Checking even better.

APY = annual percentage yield. The BreakFree Checking dividend rates are valid as of May 1, 2013 and subject to change at any time. Earn a competitive annual percentage yield up to the maximum balance of $20,000. All balances earn the base annual percentage yield. Requires sign‑on to Online Banking one time per month, one direct deposit or ACH withdrawal per month, and 12 debit card/POS transactions of $3 or more each month to earn BreakFree rates. Qualifying transactions must post to and clear account during monthly qualification cycle. Free ATMs nationwide. ATM foreign surcharge fees will be refunded monthly (excludes international ATMs, balance inquiries, and ATM deposit fees). Members not meeting requirements will not earn ATM foreign surcharge fee refunds. One account per member. $25 minimum opening deposit; no monthly minimum balance required. August is Family Fun Month, and we have a number of great Family-friendly options for you.

From the Soldier Show (Wednesday, Aug. 21, and it’s open to the entire community; page 11) to CYS Services programs and outdoor adventure trips, you’re sure to have a great time. Take the 31 days of fun challenge on page 15 and send off summer in a fun way. You can also sign up the Parent-Caddy Golf Jam (page 15) or a hike, mountain biking trip or sight-seeing tour with the Northwest Adventure Center (page 20).

August also brings the Exceptional Family Member Program’s Camp JBLM. EFMP Families are invited to sign up for Pirates of American Lake II, which promises to be fun for both overnight and day campers (see page 18).

Service members are invited to check out what’s in store at Warrior Zone at Lewis North. From patio barbecues, computer gaming, open mic night and more, all the details are on page 12.

At JBLM Family & MWR, we strive to offer enjoyable programs and quality services, and we want to make sure we’re meeting your expectations. I invite you to share your feedback at http://ice.disa.mil. It takes just a few minutes to share your MWR experiences with me and it can make a difference.

You’ve probably noticed that we feature one of our MWR eateries each month.

We like to let you know where each one is and what they feature on their menu.

This month, we’re focusing on a couple of lesser-known places that feature our Battle Bean brand with take-away breakfasts and lunches!

We sometimes mention these satellite locations — do Café Lancelatte and the Stone Education Center Battle Bean sound familiar?

They’re both conveniently located — for students taking classes at Stone Ed and while you’re getting paperwork pro-cessed at McChord Field’s customer service mall.

The baristas at Battle Bean inside Stone Ed know you’re usually in a rush and can get you in and out in a dash with a smile. Take-aways include breakfast items, such as huge muf-fins (clip the coupon on this spread for discounted muffins during August).

Lunch items include burgers, sandwiches, salads, soups and sides, plus a refrigerator full of beverages. Be sure to pick up a Battle Bean coffee punch card while you’re there.

The Battle Bean at Stone Ed is located at 6242 Colorado Ave. at Lewis Main. Call 253-964-8152 for information.

Café Lancelatte is open from 6:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m. week-days and serves freshly made-to-order coffee drinks, Italian sodas and bottled beverages like those offered at Battle Beans at Lewis.

You also can pick up a quick hot or cold breakfast to eat

Service is always friendly, fast and personalized. Ask for a punch card and you’ll get a free coffee drink for every 10 coffee purchases.

Café Lancelatte is located on the main floor at 100 Jackson Blvd. inside the customer service mall. For more information, call 253-982-6081.

The frenzy of media tours has wound down, the

escorted VIPs have made their rounds, myriad photographs and videos have been seen and stored — and finally the Warrior Zone is settling down to its fundamental mission.

“We can now more fully focus on providing Service members and civil-ians a place to get out, kick back, relax and socialize,” says Elizabeth Thunst-edt, Warrior Zone manager. “It’s the best alternative we can think of to staying by yourself in your dorm or barracks. And it’s free!”

If socializing could be seen at its best, then the Warrior Zone at Lewis North is doing its job. According to Thunst-edt, most nights are packed with adults mingling in the sports lounge or on the heated covered patio, shooting pool, playing shuffleboard, listening to music videos, vying with others in gaming competitions or watching movies in the theater.

Any social barriers outside the walls fall away as off-duty Soldiers, Airmen and civilians find the same interests in sports teams, games, movies and other recreation.

Food and games are ready-made parties

The Warrior Zone is more than a year old now, and it’s finding overwhelming success pairing recreation and food for parties.

Volunteer for BOSS Better Opportunities for Single

Service members volunteers give back to their community. Through recre-ational events, helping with other orga-nizations and seasonal projects, BOSS volunteers help improve the quality of life for many in the JBLM community.

Recognized Armywide for its success, the JBLM BOSS program has been renamed to include the Airmen of Mc-Chord Field and is the first in the Army to include members serving in other military branches.

The Warrior Zone is BOSS headquar-ters with both a Soldier and an Airman rep. Volunteer your time by calling the BOSS program at 253-967-5636.

For instance, the recent Kentucky Derby/Cinco de Mayo/UFC party provided patrons a good time all day and evening, and the first Steak Night on the Patio was such a hit that all the steaks sold out before the evening was done.

“It’s a really successful marriage of eating, drinking and having fun,” Thunstedt says. “We’ve made parties not only out of televised sports but also out of gaming tournaments with other Army, Navy and Air Force rec centers.”

The food that’s offered at patio par-ties and sports parties is different than the regular menu, according to Rene Ockimey, food manager. She says she also likes to introduce new specials, such as wraps and the new BOSS sand-wich, and then adds them to the menu if they prove popular.

“I like to keep the menu fresh to keep customers’ interest,” says Ockimey.

Hint: You can look forward to more patio parties with barbecued meats or seafood, and come out for lunch on the patio every Wednesday with off-menu specials.

Drop by any night for planned activities

The Warrior Zone plans activities six days a week (plus Sundays when football season starts). Mondays are open mic nights on the patio, Tuesdays are pool tournaments, Wednesdays are Texas Hold ‘Em nights, Thursdays are gaming, Fridays are doubles pool tournaments and Saturdays are gam-

ing tournaments. All start at 6:30 p.m., except the Saturday tourneys, which start at 2 p.m. Sign-ups are a half-hour before the event.

New events are being introduced continually, such as the new open mic nights and doubles pool tournaments. To find the latest, check out their updates at facebook.com/JBLMWarrior-Zone. Also see page 8 for more August parties.

“If there’s one thing we’d love to keep seeing happen, it’s for Service members to keep on reaching out, get-ting involved, taking a break from their day, getting a healthy meal and mixing it up with others at the Warrior Zone,” Thunstedt says.

If that’s the case, the Warrior Zone’s mission is being accomplished — hooah!

Whatever you want, the WZ has it all — from patio parties and barbecues on the covered patio with overhead TVs to weekly Texas Hold ‘Em and pool tourneys, plus all the gaming, movies and eating you can stuff in on your off-duty hours.

Family & the homefront

Whether you’re signed up for a sports camp or just spend your afternoons outside on a walk, celebrate Family Fun Month!

Enjoy the last days of summer vacation

It seems like the last day of school was just yesterday, but summer vaca-tion has flown by. It’s not over yet! Before the first day of another school year sneaks up on you, make sure you enjoy every ounce of summer sunshine Mother Nature has to offer.

Your plans can be small and still deliver big fun

Go on a hike or pick flowers, visit a new park or go out for ice cream. For a fun afternoon scavenger hunt, make a list and set out with a reusable shop-ping bag to collect the white rocks, black feathers and green leaves you’ll

find. Bring a camera or your smart-phone for your older children to docu-

ment the other items — train, clouds,

tallest tree — you can’t put in your bag.

Make a splash at the JBLM Splash Park, and play at the adjacent play-

ground. Covered picnic tables and

plenty of grass provide spaces to enjoy a

lunch packed from home or purchased

from Bowl Arena Lanes or Battle Bean

at AFC Arena — making it easy to cel-

ebrate Picnic Month, too!

All campers will experience a day filled with fishing, pontoon rides, crafts, a bounce slide, bingo, raffles, ka-raoke, face painting and tattoos, a trea-sure hunt, swimming, Family photos

and a barbecue lunch at Shoreline Park. Additionally, Game Matrix will train pirate campers during the afternoon in the fine art of “Boffer Sword Fighting.”

Try a free fitness class at a sports and fitness center near you

In addition to the top-rate cardio machines and weightlifting equipment you’d expect to find at sports and fit-ness centers across the installation, you can also find free instructional classes at many locations.

Not only are the classes free, but you can choose from a variety of times and options — from indoor cycling, pic-tured at left, to Zumba® and much more.

Start your morning with a cardio spin at Jensen Family Health & Fit-ness Center at 6:45 or 9 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Jensen is located at 2022 Liggett Ave. at Lewis Main. Wilson Sports & Fitness Center also offers 6:30 a.m. indoor cycling classes every weekday. Wilson is located at 11596 D St. at Lewis North.

Zumba classes are offered at the loca-tions above as well as at the McChord Fitness Center Annex (726 5th St. at McChord Field) and Sheridan Sports & Fitness Center (3759 Stryker Ave. at Lewis Main). If you love Zumba, check out the special event on the next page.

For a complete list of schedules for all locations, visit JBLMmwr.com and navi-gate to the Intramural Sports & Fitness pages under Recreation.

Early morning indoor cycling classes at JBLM sports and fitness centers offer

a great way to start your day. Military personnel, like Jason McCoy who also often serves as a volunteer instructor,

often fill the classes, but they’re open to everyone in the community on a first-

come, first-served basis. See the schedule at the Intramural Sports & Fitness pages at

JBLMmwr.com.

cam artists defraud millions of people each year. Using phone,

email, postal mail and the Internet, they trick people into sending money or giving out personal information.

Service members are attractive targets for consumer predators. They know you’re required to maintain good finances. You’re easy to find, so lend-ers are confident they can collect debts you owe. Your military pay represents a steady income that could be gar-nished. Military Families often start young, leading to big money manage-ment decisions by first-time decision-makers. Deployments, change of duty stations and emergencies may lead to unplanned and unique financial dif-ficulties without adequate resources to resolve them. Your loyalty to your service leads marketers to tie their pitches to the military, a strategy called “affinity marketing.”

Here are few steps from the Federal Trade Commission that can help you avoid fraud:

Wiring money is like sending cash — once it’s gone, you can’t get it back. Con artists often insist that people wire money, especially overseas, because it’s nearly impossible to reverse the transaction or trace the money. Don’t wire money to strangers, to sellers who insist on wire transfers for payment or to someone who claims to be a relative in an emergency.

Don’t send money to someone you don’t know. It’s best to do business

S

with sites you know and trust. If you buy items through an online auc-tion, consider a payment option that provides protection, like a credit card. Don’t send cash or use a wire transfer.

Don’t respond to messages that ask for your personal or financial infor-mation, whether the message comes as an email, a phone call, a text mes-sage or an advertisement. If you get a message and are concerned about your account status, call the number on your credit or debit card or your statement.

Don’t agree to deposit a check from someone you don’t know and then wire money back, no matter how convincing the story. By law, banks must make funds from deposited checks available within days, but un-covering a fake check can take weeks. You’re responsible for the checks you deposit — if a check turns out to be fake, you’re responsible for paying back the bank.

Read your bills and monthly statements regularly — on paper and online. Scammers steal account infor-

mation and then run up charges or commit crimes in your name. If you see charges you don’t recognize, contact your bank, card issuer or other creditor immediately.

Remember there’s no such thing as a sure thing. If someone contacts you promoting low-risk, high-return invest-ment opportunities, stay away. When you hear pitches that insist you act now, guarantees of big profits, promises of little or no financial risk or demands that you send cash immediately, report them to the FTC.

Know where an offer comes from and who you’re dealing with. Try to find a seller’s physical address (not just a P.O. Box) and phone number. Do an Internet search for the company name and website and look for negative re-views. Check them out with the Better Business Bureau at BBB.org.

For more information, call Army Community Service at 253-967-1453 or the Airman & Family Readiness Center at 253-982-2695 to schedule an appoint-ment or register for an upcoming class.
