You don’t have to be a golfer to enjoy the food at

JBLM golf courses. In fact, both Eagles Pride and Whispering Firs golf courses host plenty of parties, get-togethers and recep-tions, as well as their regular lunchtime patrons.

The Caddy Shack Bar & Grill at Eagles

Pride Golf Course sees both on- and off-

base customers come in to sample their

daily grill items for breakfast, lunch or

after a round of golf.

Patrons regularly return for the half-

pound specialty Angus burgers and

boneless flame-broiled ham and chicken

breast sandwiches.

Also popular are the grilled hoagie,

club and classic Reuben sandwiches, as

well as chef and chicken salads.

Habañero Mexican Grill at Whisper-

ing Firs Golf Course caters exclusively to

JBLM patrons and their guests.

For a fun challenge, ask about the Ha-

bañero Wednesday special aptly named

“The Hump.”

It’s actually a whopping 6-pound bur-

rito that you can eat for free — if you can

finish it in 45 minutes without any help

from your friends.

From individuals to entire groups who

come in to challenge each other, it’s

always an event when a customer orders

The Hump.

If you don’t mind sharing it with your

friends, you also can order The Hump for

$14.95 (offered only on Wednesdays from

11 a.m.–2 p.m.).

Habañero offers breakfast burritos

along with its traditional breakfasts. After

11 a.m., lunchtime patrons line up for

popular made-to-order specialties, includ-

ing fajita burritos, tacos, ensaladas, sides

and more. Order them spicy or tame —

they’re all fresh and tasty with generous

portions.

The Caddy Shack is located off Exit

116 from I-5. Call 253-964-2792 for more

information.

Habañero is at 895 Lincoln Blvd. at

McChord Field, near the housing area.

Did you know? Every dollar spent at The Caddy Shack Bar & Grill, Habañero Mexican Grill and JBLM golf courses goes back into the Family & Morale, Welfare and Recreation Directorate funding to improve MWR cus-tomers’ experiences.

Page 13 has more details on Whispering Firs and Eagles Pride — both JBLM golf courses are distinguished by the prestigious Audu-bon International Cooperative Sanctuary Program certification.

Monthly nature walks through the woodlands at Eagles Pride are open to the public (authorized patrons and guests can go on organized nature walks at Whispering Firs). For more details, call 253-964-0341 or email [email protected].

Golfing at JBLM is a natural experienceThere’s no place in the world

like JBLM golf courses. Surrounded by abundant natural habitat, Eagles Pride and Whisper-ing Firs golf courses have both earned the prestigious Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program’s certification — the only military installation worldwide to have two ACSP-certified courses.

Working alongside nature to conserve

the environment, wildlife and water

quality, both courses offer players the

challenges they crave.

Players can practice their straight shots

on some of Whispering Firs’ narrow, tree-

lined fairways with water hazards coming

into play on several holes. The back nine

of Whispering Firs’ 18 holes are built in

a natural wetlands conservation area.

Blacktail deer, Canada geese, ducks and

other wildlife are frequently seen by

patrons.

Eagles Pride sits adjacent to the

Nisqually Wildlife Refuge and is sur-

rounded by 227 acres of native woodland

forest. Golfers play the original 18 holes

in winter — in summer, the golf course

reverts to its 27-hole configuration for a

wide variety of playing conditions. The

golf course itself consists of about 60

percent woodlands and wetlands.

Both golf courses balance nature’s at-

tractions and golfers’ needs year-round.

For instance, more water hazards than

anticipated have greeted winter golfers

at Whispering Firs. Several areas have

Scott Hansen/Northwest Guardian

been provided proper drainage without

damaging the environment. Several

larger natural ponds on both golf courses

are kept habitable for fish, amphibians,

waterfowl and water insects by fertilizing

with natural mulch on the surrounding

grass and by aerifying the water with

fountains.

The effort to maintain a vital ecosys-

tem and improve the golf experience is

nonstop. Along with allowing former

playing areas to revert to nature, new tee

boxes are being built at each golf course

(13, 14 and 15 at Whispering Firs and 4,

5 and 7 on the red course at Eagles Pride)

that will prove more level than the undu-

lating areas they’ll replace. A new driving

range tee-hitting area is also slated to be

built at Eagles Pride this spring.

You can get an overview of these

and other golf course improvements in

person. Eagles Pride is holding an open

house Saturday, March 15, and Whisper-

ing Firs’ open house is Saturday, March

22. Along with showing you how JBLM

golf courses are eco-friendly, you can get

in on new golf specials.

The annual $99 golf pass is available

March 1–Sept. 30. The pass includes your

first round of golf with 50 percent off

green fees weekdays and 25 percent off

green fees weekends and holidays for fu-

ture rounds (excluding tournaments and

specials). Passholders also get discounts

on carts, range balls and pro shop cloth-

ing.

Starting April 1, a Golf Combo Special

that includes your green fee, cart and an

$8 food voucher will be available for $35

for ranks E-1 through E-5 and for $39 for

E-6s and above.

As well as offering joint specials, Whis-

pering Firs and Eagles Pride offer joint

tournaments, such as the 15th Annual

Rainier Cup June 20–22, monthly CG

Payday Scrambles this summer and JBLM

Club Championship Sept. 6–7.

Brush up or learn the basicsMake your game more enjoyable

by honing your skills with JBLM golf

courses’ teaching professionals. Instruc-

tors can pinpoint where you can change

your stance, follow-through, alignment

and accuracy.

If you’re new to the game, Whispering

Firs offers $99 group lessons for adults

and juniors weekday evenings starting in

June. The group lessons give you a solid

introduction to the game in an easy-to-

understand way.

For more informationWhispering Firs Golf Course is located

at 895 Lincoln Blvd. at McChord Field and is open to active duty and retired military, Reserves, DOD personnel, retired DOD civilians, Family members and guests. Call 253-982-4927 for more information.

By Chelsea Long, MPH, JBLM health educator

We’re all wired to deal with stressful events, and in today’s society it’s com-mon to encounter stressful situations in everyday life.

It’s good to note that stress can be both positive and negative. Eustress is good stress; it’s common after exercise and is often referred to as a “runner’s high.”

The daily grind frequently comes with high demands, which may result in an in-ability to cope with the situations at hand. If not properly managed, stress can also take both a mental and physical toll on us.If you’re looking to decrease your stress level, consider these suggestions on how to get started. • Pinpoint the trigger of your stress. • Find an outlet to alleviate the stressor

or develop a coping mechanism. • Take care of yourself! Make sure that

you’re getting enough rest, eating right and exercising.

• Try not to get overwhelmed with theamount of tasks at hand. Prioritize your

goals and establish a plan to accom-plish them one by one.

• Communicate with those around youto foster a relationship built on openness and trust. In the event of a disagreement, this will help you to feel more comfort-able approaching the situation.

• When you encounter a stressor, removeyourself from the situation and take a per-sonal time out — breathe and step away.

• Learn and practice stress managementtechniques routinely to better prepare you for potential stressors. If you’re interested in learning how to

better manage your stress, come see us at the Armed Forces Wellness Center where we offer biofeedback and stress manage-ment services. During these sessions, you’ll learn coping techniques that can be used in both your personal and profes-sional life.

tips for preserving water quality

Only rain down the drain...anything else is a potential violation of current regulations.

Cigarette butts don’t biodegrade — they’re made out of plastics and can leach very harmful contaminants into the environment.

Shortening shower times by 1–2 minutes can save up to 150 gallons per month.

Keep your home or work-place leak-free by checking for dripping faucets, toilet flappers and showerheads. A leaky toilet can waste up to 200 gallons each day.

Don’t pour water down the drain — water your plants with it.
