Punxsutawney Phil's Six-more-weeks-of-Winter are almost over. Some of yourfellow DYCer's took matters into theirown hands and left the record settingsnows of Detroit for a weekend's worth offun in the sun! The 2014 WinterRendezvous held this year in Key Largo,Florida, for those of us who just couldn'ttake it anymore, provided a welcomerestbit and a needed reminder of what isjust around the corner; sunny and 80!Thanks to perennial winter rendezvousplanners Dennis and Lynda Heling andTracey Dryovage who put in countlesshours over many months in preparationfor this event.

Rendezvous when it's sunny and 80 are great, Vice Commodore JoeBrooks in charge of weather this year with Fleet Captain Andy Ciupak andthe Boating Committee are putting the finishing touches on the DetroitYacht Club's 2014 Rendezvous Schedule. Signing up early for theseevents, as with other events at the DYC, helps organizers do a better jobensuring you have a great DYC time. Please don't wait till the last minute, sign up early. Try as he will Vice Commodore Brooks can't guaranteesunny and 80, however my experience indicates we can guarantee you'llhave a great time on any DYC Rendezvous! Special thanks to, now in histhird year, Fleet Captain Ciupak, for another year of dedicated service toour Club.

Singling out a few Committees without including the rest is problematicat best. In an effort to recognize all the Chairs and promote ClubManagement, Board, and Committees operating in concert to the benefitof the Club's membership we've added additional formal Chair meetings;the second of which will take place this month (the first is just prior to theCommodore's Coffee in November, which is also the first official functionof the new Board and members who gather together in celebration of ourpresent building's birthday). The goal of these additional meetings is tocommunicate the committees' mission ensuring Board and Managementunderstand their needs and stand ready to provide the necessaryresources and support in keeping with our Club Mission Statement, "…pro-viding a variety of outstanding…programs…". Please meet prior to March12th communicate with your/any committee chairperson; concerns, issues, improvement ideas or any item of importance for consideration. Again, ouraim is to provide "outstanding programs" adding to the long list of reasonsfor why we're all members of this Great Club.

In an effort to add to our membership ranks, March 2nd we are holding anOpen House so that people with renewed interest in our location asMichigan's newest State Park can come down and reacquaint or introducethemselves to our Island Resort in the City. A special thanks to all our com-mittees who are putting forth a tremendous amount of effort to introduceour Club to potential members. If you know of someone who is interestedin the Club there will be no better time to bring them down, turn them loose, and let our experts guide them through the investigative process andlearning experience. Thank you for your help in growing our Club's mem-bership ranks!

On a side note, justice, or at least an attempt, has been served; the AnneArundel County Police captured, arrested and charged Phil (aka TheRodent, aka Chucky, aka Woody and aka Whistle-Pig) with excessive win-ter! I'd say hats off to them but it's still too cold, better leave your hat on!

And that's the way it is from the Helm.

GENERAL MANAGERJIM SIDES

FROM THE SECRETARYTODD J. EIB

Greetings! As I write this we areonce again experiencing less thanideal boating weather. The river is stillfrozen. The Harbor is frozen. Iciclesabound. But then I read that we areless than 100 days to the Grand Prixand under 45 days to April 1. Sospring is on the way. I cannot wait.

I have had so many of you join onthe Facebook page and I am keepingit updated with all the info I can aswell as having great conversationand debates in the DYC GM Chatgroup. I thank all of you who have been receptive to ideasand have posted your own thoughts. That certainly helps cre-ate the road map to success for the DYC.

2014 will be a bit of a rebuild year and we are going to trymany new things. Some will work and some may not. We arestill working with DNR on the impact of Belle Isle being aState park and I will also keep everyone updated online andin e-mail blasts on any new information.

Some things that are already happening:We have a new payroll/HR company. Beyond providing a

higher level of service than an individual employee of theClub, there is a $20k cost reduction in the position. Betterservice, lower cost. Win-Win.

We are hitting our numbers on the expense side of thebudget.

We are getting the place ship shape for the opening andhopefully you will see all the new shiny additions around theClub from staff and volunteers. From the shiny brass on thefront door to the bar, blue hallway to Peacock Alley.

We are plugging in a lot more F&B events. More events atthe pool. And we are looking at some neat ideas to ratchetup the harbor store to improve your experience.

We will be doing more and more training to enhance themembership experience from the gatehouse to servers to thedocks.

Yes, it has been a rough winter. But maybe that means itwill be a great spring and summer. One thing for sure…therewill be a lot of water in the lakes this year and that's alwaysa good thing.

As I return from sunny south Florida, having enjoyed another great winter ren-dezvous, I reflected on the months workin the Board room and prepared to dis-cuss with you, my fellow DYC Members.Great news from the Finance Committee,as our efforts to reduce our debt is payingoff. We've significantly lowered our debtwhich will be covered in the Treasurer'sreport. The House Committee reviewedwith Facilities Manager Jeff Michels, important issues brought upon our facili-ties by the extreme climate conditions. Afavorable quote was received for replacing all of our aged steamtraps. This will allow our antiquated boiler system to operate in amuch more efficient manner. Efforts are also being made to negoti-ate our refuse contract, contributing to a significant savings in oper-ations. A presentation was made to the Board to review continuationof the DYC concert series. While the debate continues, the Boarddeclined to move forward with the current proposal. The Board con-tinues to work with Management in collections of bad debt. Thisissue along with policy changes to assist with collections continuesto be one of the top issues discussed at every meeting. The Board isalso monitoring and assisting Club Management where needed withverifying all Military, Clergy and Non-resident membership status. The Board also approved new membership and marketing strategiesto assist with member recruitment. Please remember to offer yourfull support and ideas in this as membership is the lifeblood of anyclub.

Every month I look forward to our discussions and you can alwaysreach me at: [email protected]

Hello all, when I wrote my second articlefor the February Main Sheet we were justfinishing the Holiday Season and theOfficers Ball, and now things seem to bemoving right along as we slowly enter thespring season. I am now writing my thirdChefs corner article as we start gearing upfor the approaching season which seemsto be on everyone's mind here at the

Detroit Yacht Club. We managers have been getting together what seemslike daily and talking about upcoming events and putting together somenew and exciting specialty programs to keep everyone busy and motivatedfor the upcoming season. Please be sure to make your reservations assoon as possible for all Club events and in the Grill Restaurant.

You may wonder why we ask for your reservations; well, knowing inadvance helps us manage our labor and food costs, and controlling costsare a concern for us all, please help us to do our part by making your reser-vation(s) as early as you can.

On another note, I wanted to try to give some information about food inour nation. The U.S. Department of Agriculture had recently reported thatbeef prices are at record highs and still on the rise. This is because theUnited States cattle herd is at a 60-year low after a drought that forced themeat processors to spend more for supplies. Additionally, the ice andsnow-packed roads slowed and or stopped the transportation of cattle topacking plants, along with the temperatures being at historic lows sloweddown the cattle weight gains, making them less available and desirable tomajor meat processors. So they are saying that retail beef prices couldstay at or near record highs through 2014.

In conclusion I would like to share a family chili recipe, it is my hope yourfamily will enjoy it as much as mine does.

ChiliINGREDIENTS

• 2 large fresh green bell peppers, seeded and chopped• 1 large fresh red bell pepper, seeded and chopped• 1 large rib of fresh celery, chopped• 2 tbsp garlic, chopped• 1/4 pound butter• 2 pounds fresh choice ground beef• 1/2 pound fresh sweet yellow onions, chopped • salt, as needed• ground black pepper, as needed• 2 tbsp chili powder• 2 tbsp ground cumin• 1 quart premium diced tomatoes in juice• 1 pint chili sauce• 1 quart dark red kidney beans with juice• Freshly grated Cheddar• Hot pepper sauce of choice

DIRECTIONSPut the chopped peppers, chopped celery and butter in a large skillet over

medium heat. Cover the skillet and sauté for 20 minutes, stirring severaltimes during the cooking process.

Chunk the ground beef with your hands and put it into a frying pan overmedium heat. Cook until the meat has browned and is fully cooked. Add thechopped onions, garlic, and season with the salt and pepper, to taste.

In a large soup pot or kettle, add the beef and onions, celery and pep-pers, the chili powder, the cumin, diced tomatoes with juice, chili sauce, kid-ney beans with all the juice, the salt and pepper. Stir to combine, and thenbring to a boil over medium heat. Lower the heat, cover, and simmer thechili for 45 minutes.

It will lose its chunkiness and mellow in flavor the longer you cook it. Keepit on all day, if you like, stirring it from time to time.

Serve in a large bowl garnished with grated Cheddar and freshly choppedonions. Add your favorite pepper sauce for some heat.

Thank you for your patronage. 5

As the sailing season of 1905 drew to a close, Harry Kendall(Commodore 1913-1914) asked himself how we keep the DYCmembers together with the Clubhouse closed. The answer cameto him. Form the DYC Bowling League. This made the DYCBowling League, organized in 1906, the second oldest bowlingleague in the United States after the Wall Street Bankers.

The group decided to meet at Eddie Biddigare's Bowling Alleyand Bar. The Bowling Alley was located at East Grand Blvd. andJefferson making it convenient for all the members. The leaguewas a great success with over ten teams. The bowling leaguecontinued to be highly successful even with the coming ofProhibition and the building of our new year around Clubhouse. With increased participation, how do we accommodate all themembers? The first step was to find a location that was centralto all the bowlers with a time that didn't conflict with Club activi-ties. Wednesday became the night for bowling and locationsalways moved to accommodate the membership dispersion.

By the 1960s, the driving force that bound the bowlers wereCom. "Tommy" Tompkins and the Real Com. Chuck Dawes. Inthe 1970s, there were so many bowlers that there was aWednesday Night group that met in Birmingham, an east sidegroup that met on Jefferson Ave. in St. Clair Shores, a women'sgroup that met on Wednesday afternoon and a mixed that met onWoodward Ave. on Sunday afternoon. There was so much activ-ity that Com. Tompkins suggested building a ten lane bowlingalley where Starlite Circle is located. After construction estimatesand operating estimates were obtained, it was determined thathaving our own bowling alley did not make sense based on eco-nomics and membership dispersion.

Membership participation declined and eventually we werereduced to one league organized by Mary Alexander, wife ofCom. Jim Alexander. Participation continued to decline until after100 years the DYC Bowling League became inactive.

Wouldn't it be interesting if we could get a small group to reac-tivate the Bowling League with three or four events each winter?

TRADITIONS COMMITTEEPATRICIA THULL O'BRIEN

BACKDROP:Com. Fred Carr has started a Traditions

Committee. The purpose of this committee is twofold: To help ensure that we retain the salient

traditions that have enriched our DYC his-tory; and, ensure that members feel thatthey are members of a Private Yacht Cluband not a Marina.

As a preliminary effort before any formalCommittee formation or meetings, we haveheld five facilitation/"Focus" sessions, representing a cross-section of the DYC pop-ulation. Within these sessions we have hadopen streams of thought yielding insight andopinions. We have now reviewed the results of the five facilitation ses-sions and many recommendations have been made, which will be dis-seminated to the proper channels.

NOW, much information that has been gathered specific to the DYC tra-ditions. All facets of this material will be reviewed in detail in its entirety. We will listen to what we have heard from DYC members. From this exer-cise, the committee will find its course and recommend a direction for thefuture as regards DYC traditions (events, tenants, demeanor, etc.).

Those who have participated in any of the sessions have been askedof their interest in continuing to work with the Traditions Committee. TheCommittee is also open to anyone else that might find it of impor-tance. For more information or to join the committee, contact me -

FROM THE TREASURERDAN NOWICKI

My fellow DYC members, what a winterwe are having. I can't wait for the warmerweather to get here and the ice to melt. The good news is that we may see a rise inthe lake levels which will benefit us all.

As you know, the Club has reducedhours of operation and closed for periods inJanuary and February. These efforts havepaid off in that we are tracking much closerto the plan than we did last year. The othergood news is that the membership hastracked closely to the budget. We had agood showing at the boat show and by thetime you read this, we will have had themembership open house. Again, we needevery member's help in achieving our goalof 600 active/active boating members bySeptember 30, 2014.

At this time, I would like to remind everyone that the Gold Cup fundrais-er is scheduled for Friday May 2, 2014. I am requesting every member’shelp again this year. This event helps ensure that the race for the oldesttrophy in motorsports continues to be run in Detroit. Not only is this a his-torical race, it is a profit generator for the DYC. I am asking for volunteersto help run the event, donations for the silent/live auction and most impor-tantly, attendance at the fundraiser. Spread the word to your family andfriends, and come on down for a great time and support a great cause.

Thank you to all members for their continued support of the Club thispast year.

This month's installment of our spot-light on the House Rules is aboutMembership Cards and Entering theClub Premises. DYC security staff is atthe gatehouse to greet you as well asprovide a contact point for safety andemergency response, to ensure thesafety of the premises and enforce DYCrules. House Rule 2 states, "a personentering the Club Premises shall show aMembership Card, Guest Card or otherproper identification." Your cooperationwith presenting your card and identify-ing your guests for our security staff isappreciated. Please also rememberthat the Rule applies to entering theDYC premises, not exclusively to vehi-cles crossing the bridge. Therefore, whether you arrive by bicycle, boat or foot - or as a passenger in a vehicle - you are entering thepremises and may be asked for your membership card or to showproper identification. You are the host of your guests (see HouseRule 5 - a topic for more in-depth discussion soon) and are requiredto ensure their cooperation with our rules as well.

A related topic is Membership Cards - House Rule 1. This ruleestablishes the types of cards available for family, significant othersand guests of Members and the process for issuance of these cards. The most common cards are FA, FB/FC and FF Membership Cards.A spouse or a widowed mother or father (including in-law) of aMember may be issued a "FA Membership Card" at the authorizationof the Member. If the Member is classified as a Non-Resident, theFA card may only be authorized for the Member's spouse. A FB orFC card may be authorized for the child of a member. Minor chil-dren, ages 12 through 18, may be issued a FB card and are notauthorized to be in the Clubhouse or on the Club premised after6:00pm on Saturday evenings, except for when accompanied by aparent or guardian or times designated by the House Committee. Achild of a member who is between the age 19 through 21 may beauthorized to hold an FC card on the account of the parent Member.

Class FF Membership Cards may be requested for a "significantpartner in a domestic or committed dating relationship" of a singleresident member. Only one FF cardholder may be authorized by themember at any given time - should circumstances change, the mem-ber may request that an FF card be rescinded before another can berequested. An FF card must be authorized by the DYC Board ofDirectors and applications are submitted through the DYCMembership Office. Prior to approval of the FF card, the House Rulerequires that the prospective cardholder be introduced to at least twoCommodores, Past Commodores or Board members. The Boardmay also request a personal interview. The Board may revoke thecard at any time if the FF cardholder violates the DYC rules orBylaws.

The final type of card is a temporary Guest Card which may berequested for an out-of-town guest of a member. The card is appliedfor in writing and is subject to approval by the House Committee.

Please be aware that the DYC member is responsible for all ofthe actions of any cardholder authorized on his or her account.Members and other cardholders may be requested to show theircard to make purchases and any charges by these cardholders areapplied to the account of the member. Although these cards do notentitle their holders to vote, hold office or apply for a boat well, manyof our family of FA, FB/FC and FF cardholders are an active part ofDYC and play an important role in our Club.

have any expired flares, bring them or consider donating them for thedemonstration. We have clearance from the local authorities includ-ing the Coast Guard to launch them over the Detroit River so if youhave never shot one of these expensive contraptions, now is yourchance! All details for the DPS events and classes can be found bycontacting Margi Schneider ([email protected]).

If you log onto our website you will see a Rendezvous page underthe Boating tab. I have posted this year's tentative rendezvous whichshould be finalized mid-March, early April. On April 12 after the cook-ing classes we will have our Harbor Opening Party where the detailsof all rendezvous are discussed. On top of learning and signing up,Commodore Carr will be christening the docks, the IN-Tensity awardis given (first in harbor) and the Boating Committee buys a round oflibations in the Grill Bar to start off the season. You should considercoming down as we have changed things up a bit this year and thisis the best forum to get in the know.

Looking forward to getting the fleet in the water. We are ready fora good thaw.
