SPRING 2012DYC Improves to Serve You BetterEach year DYC continues to improve the facilities for boaters enjoyment. You will notice new upholstery and decorating in the Captain’s Lounge Clubhouse when you return this Spring. Maintenance of the Boatel flooring, docks and all heavy equipment used at DYC has occured this winter. Our annual maintenance of the Travel Lift, forklifts and aerial manlift have coordinated with the addition of a smaller forklift “Lil’ King”. You will also notice two yellow electric work trucks, fondly named “Guida” and “Guido”. These electric work trucks help our marine technicians as they take parts and tools from the Service Dept. to your boat, reducing the billable time and saving you money. We hope to have the Wi-Fi hard wired by April 2012, which should extend the area it covers for boaters internet use.

Living Shoreline is a “Work in Progress”As all things “living” go through a growth process, so it is with the “Living Shoreline” between C and D dock at Deltaville Yachting Center.

DYC Boaters’ Boutique Opens March 24th!Wonderful shopping has taken place to stock the DYC Boaters’ Boutique for the 2012 Spring Season! You will find fun, reasonably priced casual clothing, hats, jewelry and even some neat decorating pieces for your home and boat. Laura Martin and Onna Grimm have a good time providing DYC boaters a great place to shop! We have expanded the variety of clothing this year. We carry Gill clothing and outerwear, along with a large choice of Wallaroo Hats for men, women and children. Come in and enjoy shopping in the Boaters’ Boutique- Opened March 24th through December 24th! New items arriving weekly!

As you can see from this picture taken in February 2012, one year and three months after installation of the coir logs and young plants, some growth of the native plantings has occured. The coir logs are beginning to disintegrate into the earth, becoming part of the shoreline. Some settling and erosion have occured due to Hurricane Irene and nor’easterns in 2011. In October 2010 the DYC Living Shoreline Project was completed by DYC, Friends of The Rappahannock and Hammertime Marine. In Spring of 2012, additional plantings will be added as necessary and some additional native sand will be filled in. The process of maintaining and working with nature as this shoreline is stabilized continues.

DYC “Piscatorial Tutorial” Fishing Seminar 7 PM to 9 PM Saturday, May 12thB.T. Smith of DYC ‘Fishing Fame’ will demonstrate and discuss successful fishing techniques. J & W Tackle Shoppe will provide a look at the newest and most interesting tackle options. We are hoping to have Judy Belcher share some ‘fishing stories’! And perhaps you will even have a chance to see and buy some of Bobby Belchers ‘special lines’ for fishing. Plenty of food, drink and

STORM HAUL OUT LIST DOES NOT ROLL OVER FROM YEAR TO YEAR

Deltaville Yachting Center carefully monitors named storms. This year we watched as ‘Irene’ approached Virginia’s coast.

The DYC Storm Policy is posted on www. dycboat.com and can be read for details. Because ownership and location of vessels can change, EACH YEAR you must contact DYC Service Dept. to do a new workorder FOR THAT CALENDAR YEAR’s Storm Haul Out List. DYC maintains an Annual Storm Haul Out List which begins ‘fresh’ each January 1st. Your name goes on the list each year according to the date you sign the Storm Haul Out workorder. Signing the Storm Haul Out List authorizes participation in the Storm Policy for that calendar year only and does not roll over from year to year. So, don’t wait until named storms begin to appear....contact Laura Martin [email protected] or 804-776-9898 in January and get your name on the 2012 Storm Haul Out List. (We pray that we don’t have to use it!)

DYC Service Department Stays Busy with Work & Education! Each winter is very interesting as DYC has the opportunity to help boaters improve their boats. We are so very thankful to stay busy! This winter has found the DYC marine technicians replacing engines, repairing hull damage, installing bow and stern thrusters along with rigging inspections and installations. New boat commissioning and warranty work during the winter allows boaters to enjoy their boats during the warmer months. Bobby Shelton sits for his ABYC Electrical Certification and Ed O’Hearn will take ABYC Marine Corrosion Certification, becoming ABYC Master Level Technician. DYC owner and service manager, Lew Grimm, completed the Onan Generator Lifetime Certification in Charlotte, NC.

Boating: A Criminal Offense??When we are enjoying our boats, we need to remember responsible operation is extremely important. Did you know that grossly negligent operation is considered a criminal offense? The U.S. Coast Guard and other law enforcement agencies may impose civil penalties, and operators can be fined up to $5,000, imprisoned for one year or both.

Negligent operation may include:• operating a boat in a swimming area• operating a boat under the influence of alcohol or drugs• speeding excessively in the vicinity of other boats or in dangerous waters• participating in hazardous practices while waterskiing or engaging in other tow sports• bowriding or riding on seat backs, gunwales or the transom• diving or jumping off a moving boat

DYC Boaters’ Party- May 26th at the DYC Pool & ClubhouseRSVP- so Onna knows how many will be in your group! [email protected] or 804-776-9898.Deltaville Yachting Center loves boaters and every year we celebrate by having a great ‘family oriented’ party at the DYC clubhouse and pool. Bring your friends and family! Food, live music, swimming (for those who want to!) and a great DYC

larger Virginia Marine Trade Association.Updates which DYC boaters may find interesting are:• 70% of U.S.boaters have an income of less than $100,000 and use their boats a average of 32 days each year• the new “Light Square Company” is planning to use band width in a different way that may compromise GPS signals to boaters and auto drivers/ Federal Communication Commission is considering the impact of this new technical development• tax on boat fuel goes to B.I.G. Boaters Infrastructure Grant- used to install transient slips, pump outs and boating related state projects• Ethenol is in U.S. fuel because of the Clean Air Act from late 1990 forward/ be aware that the new sticker on gas pumps can now say “may contain up to 15% Ethenol”. DO NOT USE IN MARINE ENGINES. Read the sticker on the gas pump where you fill you boat tanks and be forwarned. May cause problems with carberators, fuel lines and fuel tanks. Pay attention to what you are putting into your boat tanks- EO(currently at DYC gas pump), E10 or E15 (illegal to put in marine engines b/c of damage it causes)??? (SPEAKER AT DYC SERVICE SEMINAR MARCH 24TH WILL ADDRESS THIS TOPIC)• Fuel has changed over the last 30 years and is not as stable a product, therefore treatment additives/stabilizer should be considered• Visit www.ethanolIRFA.org or www.boatus.com for more information on ethenol in marine fuel

doorprize! Bring a salad, meat casserole, appetizer or snack to share. DYC has hired “The Delvers” from Newport News to put us all in a good mood with their wonderful music and singing.

May is National Safe Boating Month- DYC Life Jackets 20% Off!Contact DYC Parts & Service Dept. to order ANY style/type of Life Jacket and Receive

a 20% Discount Thru May 30th! Email [email protected] or call 804-776-9898

Much like a helmet to a biker or skate boarder, life jackets are an essential part of your boating safety equipment and should be worn at all times while on the water. In 2008, of the 709 recreational boating fatalities, over 89% of those victims were not wearing their life jackets.

Life jackets are now lighter, less obtrusive, and more attractive than ever before. The new inflatable life jackets allow the mobility and flexibility that you need when boating, fishing, paddling or hunting and are much cooler in the warmer weather. There are many different varieties of inflatable jackets ranging from those that inflate instantly when you hit the waer to those that are manually inflated. All are designed to be more comfortable and wearable that the traditional life jacket.

Accidents can happen at an alarming speed anyplace or anytime you are on the water. Although many boaters stow life jackets on their boat, very few choose to wear them. There just isn’t time to grab a life jacket and put it on properly before you are in the water. If you are faced with a strong current or unfavorable weather conditions you will not only have trouble making sure you are safe and secure in your life jacket, but you will be unable to help your friends, relatives, children or passengers who have accompanied you in your boat. Wearing your life jacket will allow your to be safe in case of an accident and will also allow you the ability to assist others that may be in danger.(Reprinted from “The Manifest” Colonial Sail & Power Squadron)

Fishing with B.T.The boatel is close to opening and I am sure everyone is excited to be reunited with their boats. The boats are surely excited also. Wash me, polish me , make me shine in the warm sunlight and please go over my vitals. Everyone be sure to check the dates on your flairs and the contents of your first aid kits. Personal flotation devices should be checked for their condition also. The mild winter weather should have many of the fish we target arriving a few weeks early this year. Flounder and spades should be biting at the Cell - B42 area in May. Croaker will be a good bet in the river by mid April. The folks at VMRC are in the process of maybe reducing the flounder size to 17 1/2 in. That being the case some keepers should be availaible in the river at Mosquito Point Reef and at the dropoff up by the Norris Bridge. Togs are also availaible close by at the Iron Ore bottom just off Gwynn’s Island. Be sure to check the regulations on Tog and Flounder before harvesting cause it could change. VMRC has an excellent web site for all the regulations. The cost of fuel is climbing daily so some closer to the creek trips should help that some. The Black Drum run should be turning on in May from Cape Charles to the CBBT. Crab and chowder clams are the baits of choise for these bruisers. They are a good fish for catch and release by not very good table fare. The mild temps we have been blessed with sure has me chomping at the bit to get out on the salt. Everybody make sure your boat is seaworthy and all of your safety equipment is 100% . Take some kids out this summer and expose them to the boating and fishing experience. Make some memories that will last for everyone.

Tight lines and full coolers,

NERVOUS WRECK B.T.

DYC Storm Info Helps BoatersSea Grant Symposium quotes Lew Grimm illustrating how DYC is always looking for ways to serve DYC customers.

Hurricane Irene storm reports sent out by DYC used VIMS Tidal Flooding Website as one source of information. VIMS Thomas Murray will present the topic “Achieving Broader Impacts” at the Annual Sea Grant Symposium in Richmond Virginia in an effort to make the Tidal Flooding Website of scientist John Boone a public site.

August 29, 2011 Post Hurricane Irene

Hi Dr. Boon.

We not only were watching your water level predictor, we actually sent it out to 2000 of our customers in a twice daily storm update. We of course proudly gave VIMS the credit, I thought the association gave our simple update a sense of gravity!

We used the Yorktown site, and advised our customers of the time differential etc. This Windmill point one is great! We've sent a large number of our inquiring customers to your site, and when you go public with this it will be just that much better.

Thanks for all you do, knowledge is power, and in a situation such as last weekend, you need all you can find.
