Summer 20114th Annual Deltaville Dealer Days Boatshow

Chesapeake Yacht Sales was ex-tremely busy on Saturday, May 7th during the 4th Annual Delta-ville Dealer Days Boatshow. Five brokers were showing boats dur-ing the afternoon and several boats have already been sold as a result of the Dealer Days Event. CYS’s 2011 Catalina 355 #19 is ‘Under Contract’ and the new owners look forward to sailing her home to White Stone on June 4th! CYS went through 5 gallons of ‘Island Punch’ and hundreds of ‘Miss Carol’s Chesapeake Mace-damia Cookies’. Sunday, Moth-er’s Day, was quieter, but ‘believe it or not’, several mothers chose to come boat shopping! Con-gratulations to the Grand Prize winner, Howard Secrist! Howard will enjoy “Two Night Stay at Ir-vington’s Hope & Glory Inn’!!

DYC Service Dept. News Marine mechanical work, total repowers, exterior refinishes and interior/electrical refits on both power and sail has been keeping DYC Service Department techs very busy. “We have seen an increase in engine sales, transmission/engine rebuilds and boat system replacements this year,” says DYC Service Manager Owner, Lew Grimm. Several 40’ + sailboats received total repowers and refits. Grimm says,”Being a Yanmar and Cummins dealer allows us to be very competitive on pricing, but lately we have been doing estimates for several other engine brands as well. New and used boat sales have picked up and so we are also busy commissioning some great boats.”

Take Cover When Lightning StrikesSummer thunderstorms can develop and intensify quickly. If you’re on the water and notice thunderstorms developing, seek shelter on land in a safe building or vehicle as soon as possible. Lightning can travel up to 10 miles from a storm, so you could be in danger even with blue skies overhead. Don’t wait for rain to fall before taking ac-tion. Many lightning deaths occur ahead of a storm because people wait until the last minute to seek shelter. You shouldn’t head out when storms are forecast, but if you are caught on the water during a thunderstorm and cannot get to shore in time, the following tips may help lessen your chances of being struck by lightning.

• Don’tfish,water-skiorswim.• Divers should get out of the water and into a sturdy shel-

ter or boat cabin. If that’s not possible, dive as deep as possible for the storm’s duration.

• Lower, remove or tie down radio antennas and other protruding devices.• Go to the center of your boat’s cabin. If your boat has no cabin,

crouch down in the boat’s center, stay as low as possible, and avoid touching metal. Keep arms and legs inside the vessel.

• Don’t use or touch electrical equipment, including the ra-dio, except in an emergency.

• Always wear a life jacket. A lightning strike could render you uncon-scious, causing you to fall overboard.

• If you know or suspect that your boat has been struck by lightning, check the electrical system and compass for damage after the storm.

• Ifsomeonehasbeenstruckbylightning,beginfirstaidimme-diately and call for emergency assistance. Lightning victims do not carry a charge and are safe to touch. Check to see if the person is breathing and has a pulse. Begin CPR if necessary. Check the victim for burns- one where the lightning entered the body and one where it exited. LOCAL NOTICE TO MARINERS - Updated Weekly

Deltaville Coming Back Strong From April 16 Tornado

Thank you to all who have sent donations and donated time toward the Deltaville Clean Up efforts. The Deltaville community was severely dam-aged by the F2 Tornado of April 16th. Thirty two homes were de-stroyed and another 30+ homes were seriously damaged. The Deltaville Community Association (DCA) building, pool and tennis courts were hit hard. Zoar Baptist Church sanctuary was totally de-stroyed and the rest of the church was ‘condemned for use’. Opera-tion Blessing came into Deltaville the day after the storm and served thousands of meals as well as co-ordinated clean up efforts. The community jumped into action along with many volunteers from other areas and Deltaville is begin-ning to look better. There is much work still to be done and all help is appreciated. The DCA is trying to get the pool rebuilt and opened for swimming lessons by mid June. Donations can be made to DCA, P.O. Box 211, Deltaville, VA. 23043. Also, you can pick up one of the I Love Deltaville T-shirts at DYC Ship’s Store(donation of $12 to DCA), these t-shirts were gen-erously donated by T’s T-Shirts, next to Moo’s Cafe’. The other two occasions to help are: Zoar Baptist Church Rebuilding Fund, P.O. Box 1010, Deltaville, VA. 23043 and Zoar Baptist Benevo-lent Fund, P.O. Box 1010, Delta-ville, VA. 23043- benevolent funds are distributed by several commu-nity pastors to local families who suffered losses during the tornado.

Fishing with B.T.

Here we are in June already. Temps the last week of May have reached into the 90’s so that should warm the water a little quicker and get the fish on the feed. There have already been reports of flounder catches at Buoy 42 and the Cell. The new regulations on flatties should help with getting some keepers in the Rapp this year. Given the rise in gas prices that is a good thing. We are lucky to have the non-ethanol fuel at DYC cause that other stuff causes many engine problems that none of us need. Thanks DYC staff! Spades should start biting with some consistency at the Cell and Wolftrap the second week in June. Chowder clams cut in small pieces are the ticket to bent rods and big smiles. Croaker have already provided anglers in the Rapp with some pullage. Some of these Croaker have topped 3 lbs.! Squid and shrimp seem to be the top producers but also try bloodworms cause there are some Spot in the river already. Cobia catches usually are reported the first week in June. Hot spots for these brown bombers range anywhere from the CBBT to Windmill Pt. Eels and live spot and croaker are a favorite bait. Larry and his son on HIGH GEAR had good luck last year so maybe he can give some good tips. Lots of options for many species are available so get out there and have some fun. Please remember to carry plenty of water and stay hydrated on these hot summer days. Don’t forget the sunscreen and your sunglasses but if you do a trip to the marinas shipstore will hook you up. Be careful out there and take some kids fishing.
