John Sanford, RLA, ASGCA• John Sanford has 20 years of experience in golf course design, completing

more than 60 new design and renovation projects in his career. He is a graduate of Louisiana State University with a Bachelors degree in Landscape Architecture. He spent five years practicing landscape architecture before landing his first golf course design in 1986. 

• John has traveled the globe working in Asia, the Caribbean, the Middle East and throughout the United States. Designing courses on sites with diverse opportunities and constraints has given him experience and perspective that is unique to few architects. John's most recently has broken ground on a new golf course in Egypt located on the Mediterranean Sea coast in northern Egypt.  The course is Sanford's sixth design in Egypt. 

• Sanford's most local work can be experienced close to home in the dramatic landfill transformation that is Granite Links Golf Club in Quincy, Mass., a 27 hole links-style layout.  Completed in 2006 after more than six years of construction, the multimillion-dollar project needed 900,000 truckloads of dirt from Boston's "Big Dig" project to fill 450 acres of old quarries and two former landfills.

General Comments

• Course should incorporate a back, mid, and forward tee whenever possible to allow for all levels of play and ages to better enjoy their golf club– Forward tees should be no longer than 5000 yds, we are 5700!– Back tees should not only increase length, but also demand shot

shaping (ex: 4th)– USGA Std for Par 5 is min. of 475 yds– Women Par 5 should be max of 430-440 yds

• Tees should be 28-30 ft wide minimum– New tee boxes should be min. of 500 sq. ft.– $2-3K/tee box + cost of fill if unavailable on site

• Most tees just need leveled, lengthened and/or widened– Most expansions can be accomplished by lowering tee box 1-2

ft. (1 ft lower = 4 additional feet in length or width)

General Comments cont.

• Strongly suggests a plan to remove unattractive trees and shrubs and replace with fescue – much more in keeping with natural beauty of course and landscape an less expensive to maintain (mowing labor)

• A 10 yr Master Plan is necessary for DYC– Preserves and protects the course esp. with

Committee roll-over– Basic plan ~$10k

• Add forward tee near cart path

• Remove evergreen between tee boxes

• Lengthen tee and expand

• Lower 1-2 ft to lengthen tee

• Bunker behind green to trap errant shots

• Expand straight back for Back tees

• Expand left for Mid tees (white)

• Add Forward tee

• Level tee and Expand• General Hole comments:

– Unfair! Does not allow visuals for risk shots– Create "run up" approach to the green, much like #6

to allow people to try to drive and allow others to run the ball up on the green and then pot bunkers on sides, etc.

• Suggestions (minimal costs)– Bulldoze a “saddle” in the first hill at 200 yeards to

open the tee shot up visually.– Keep fairway narrow to maintain difficulty– Remove waste bunker, add pot bunkers per above

• Lower tee 2-3 ft to lengthen

• Tee box needs more light (east sun best)– Remove several trees on right– Leave some pines for pine mulch cover

• Lower Box to expand

• Add a Forward tee on lower hill

• Level and Expand 2-4 ft each side

• Expand and Straighten Tee box– Existing curved tee box not in keeping with all
