in the structure and funding of the aged-care and disability sectors. The mecwacare Board of Directors, Chief Executive and Leadership team have considered many options for development, keeping in mind the government imperative for service consolidation and changes in legislation relating to Home Care Packages and Home and Community Care. We also spent several years consolidating our foundations, reviewing our service systems and upgrading our IT infrastructure to meet the upcoming challenges. Having completed

mecwacare has worked hard to ensure we are best prepared to maintain the quality of our care.

We are continuing to tender for acquisition of aged-care residences, home care services, disability services and community housing services. The organisation has expanded geographically over the last 12 months with

Melbourne and regional Victoria. Our Ballarat Region Service has celebrated one exceptional year in business, and we are very proud of the professional staff. A lot of

off. We are now an established part of the community, forging links with local networks and providing ongoing services to clients of six different health organisations. mecwacare is looking forward to a fruitful and lasting association with the region. Of note, working in partnership with the Ballarat Health Service has been a pleasure. Together we have achieved great outcomes for the people who need the care.

cent uptake of the packages we are keen for the government to offer us more packages in the upcoming announcement in December 2014. Our demand for packages has resulted in several hundred people keen to take up care through mecwacare.

In June this year it was announced that mecwacare was successful in tendering for the provision of services in the City of Melbourne. From 7 September we will provide home care, respite care, personal care, meals on wheels, planned activity groups and neighbourhood house support from South Yarra to Flemington. mecwacare will gain more than 700 new clients, as well as six planned activity groups and neighbourhood centres located in the CBD, Carlton, Kensington, North Melbourne and South Yarra.

care acquired four properties from 1253-1259 Malvern Road in Malvern, adjacent to the mecwacare Malvern Centre. These properties are currently housing, and are being considered for development by the organisation as we look to continue expanding our services. We have also completed an extension to Rivendell House at Pakenham to allow for more services and an improved modern facility – it is wonderfully suited to both our younger clients with disabilities and our older clients.

Over the last 12 months we have commenced planning for the expansion of our Community Housing Services, and will almost triple our capacity to provide homes for people who are over the age of 65 and

Over Christmas some of the staff at Presentation College, Windsor, volunteered their time to put up and decorate our traditional large Christmas tree. Their efforts were very much appreciated and brought great joy to our residents.

The Painting Group at the centre held its annual art exhibition in February, with a wonderful display of works decorating the walls of the community

Home Nursing and Care Services

South East Metro Service

The South East Metro Service is based in Malvern East and offers care and support including for the frail aged and those in need of respite.

Over the last 12 months the service continued to engage an Active Service Model approach in care provision under the new consumer directed care environment

We facilitated a number of holidays for our clients throughout Victoria, visiting Ballarat, Ararat and the Grampians to Sorrento, Geelong and Apollo Bay. These holidays came with 24-hour nursing care, and the feedback we received was exceptionally positive and has inspired us to keep

care needs.

The service participated in a trial of a tool for Victorian Home And Community Care agencies designed to standardise assessment and establish best-practice assessment guidelines in Victoria.

We ran a number of three-day trips for clients to areas including Warrnambool, Echuca and Stawell – these trips were very popular with clients, providing them with an opportunity to make connections with other people in their community.

The team participated in the Brimbank Active Service Model working group, workshops (co-location, service coordination and community engagement) and meetings with other providers across the western suburbs.

South East Region Service

The South East Region Service is based in Pakenham. Amongst the services offered are home nursing and home care to isolated individuals and those in remote areas.

At the service we entered our second successful year providing meal vouchers to clients who are socially isolated. There were seven participating cafes across the Shire of Cardinia, with the initiative allowing our clients to engage further in their local community while eating affordable nutritious meals.

We provided two three-day trips to our clients in Victoria - one to Lakes Entrance and one to Echuca - which were very positively received. We also ran day trips as part of our respite program to Phillip Island and the Dandenong Ranges. Our committed workforce of carers helped drive growth into the Bass Coast area.

successful. We have provided ongoing services to clients of St Laurence, Pinarc Disability Support, Latrobe Community Health Service, MS Australia and Carer Respite and Support Services, as well as support to more than 200 Ballarat Health Services linkages. We have established local network links to Ballarat Regional Multicultural Council, Direct2Care and Ballarat and District Aboriginal Co-operative. Importantly our Ballarat Region Service has supported joint training opportunities with Ballarat Health Services for our direct care staff.

We have had very low staff turnover amongst our local direct care workers, with 95 per cent attendance at our direct care worker forums showing their commitment to their profession.

In August 2013 the upgrade of the existing building and the construction of the extension at Rivendell House were completed. This expansion addressed the increased demand for services and offered

Rivendell House underwent an external food safety audit in February 2014. We were commended on upgraded systems that have been implemented into the routine of all staff. We also congratulated volunteer Peter Vawdon on 15 years of service.

The Bowen Street Centre is based in Malvern East and provides a broad range of programs to more than 200 clients from Stonnington and the surrounding areas. Over the last 12 months one of our key acheivements has been the commencement of our support group for carers looking after loved ones. The group meets monthly and is growing in popularity, offering social catch-ups, guest speakers and morning teas to provide a sense of community. The Bowen Street Centre also held a well-received three-day trip to Geelong for clients and carers. The feedback was so positive the centre is looking forward to organising another trip soon.

Disability Services

Our Disability Services team at the Fisher Street Centre in Malvern East provides day programs to clients in the eastern and southern regions of Melbourne. Our clients participate in a range of

activities that enhance their involvement in the community, their participation and independence.

Last year the Fisher Street Centre was nominated for the Excellence in Improving Health Award at the Victorian Disability Sector Awards. In the last 12 months the rear courtyard at the centre was rejuvenated with synthetic grass, an outdoor setting and a storage shed for our sports equipment. We welcomed a new Client Services Supervisor, and commenced a third bus run to meet the increased need for client transportation. We also actively marketed our services to all Futures for Young Adults program participants to increase referrals to our services.

We also tendered for a long-term lease at the May Armstrong Centre in Malvern East, where we plan to provide additional day services to 50 adults with intellectual disabilities. This will double the number of clients who currently access day services through our Fisher Street Centre.

Opportunity Shops

In May of this year we celebrated the 50th anniversary of our Malvern Op Shop, based at 136 Wattletree Road. The shop came into existence in 1964 when mecwacare needed funds to expand our services. To read more about the history of the store see the feature on page 19.

Gardening and maintenance

In the last year our landscape gardener has transformed the garden beds at mecwacarefacilities. The front entrance at the Sir Donald and Lady Trescowthick Centre in Prahran now has an array of new shrubs and trees, the highlight of which is the roses. At the Noel Miller Centre our gardener painstakingly removed the old hedges and plants in the front garden bed, replacing them with a beautiful display of roses, azaleas and a bronze sculpture.

To ensure we maintain the highest level of care, the team commenced performance modelling, Occupational Health and Safety and psychometric testing for direct care staff to increase safety and minimise the risk of injury in the workplace. We also applied for the new Employer of Choice for Gender Equality and Breastfeeding Friendly Workplace citations.

We successfully tendered to the Cities of Boroondara and Kingston, AccessCare Southern and the Russian Welfare Society for home care services. The service currently has almost 40 direct care workers who operate in the city and surrounds. These staff service a rapidly growing client base - we now have close to 250 clients in the local area.

Our close-knit group are comprised of locals who have a fantastic collective knowledge of not only the clients but the culture and the community of Ballarat. This has been one of the keys to our success in an area where word of mouth is so important.

We would like to congratulate our Ballarat staff on the fantastic achievement of one year in business, and we look forward to the successes to come with their continued hard work.

Our projects in the City of Bayside - located in Dalgetty Road, Beaumaris, and Sandringham Road, Sandringham - have been in the design phase for the last two years as part of our plans to expand throughout Melbourne.

Like our Glen Iris units, they will be designed to facilitate comfort and independence for older people who need affordable housing. mecwacare will also offer home nursing and home care services to these residents in line with our continuum-of-care model of service provision. The units will be completed with residents moved in by the middle of 2015.

These developments are made possible by support from the National Rental Affordability Scheme.

mecwacare also acquired four properties adjacent to the mecwacare Malvern Centre. These will be developed for aged-care useage as our services continue expanding.

Over the last 12 months some key developments have taken place in mecwacareCommunity Housing Services. We have undertaken the preparatory work to commence building and renovation on two new sites in the City of Bayside and our Glen Iris property will be extended with newly-constructed units by the middle of 2015.

BEFORE AFTER

The original Opportunity ShopIn the early 1960s mecwacare needed funds to expand the services we offered in the local area, and the decision was made to open an opportunity shop. A site - marked down for demolition by the council - was found at 136 Wattletree Road, Malvern. Extensive restoration was done before the grand opening as the shop had broken windows, no water or electricity, and was full of debris. When the work was complete,
