Crime Prevention TipsTheft of Winter EquipmentEach winter, the theft of skis and snowboards increase significantly. The high values of these items make them an easy target for thieves and many are stolen from residences and businesses each year. Generally the more it snows, the more these thefts occur as victims hastily leave their property unsecure in an effort to return inside and get out of the cold.

It pays to be vigilant and take precautions to protect your property against theft. Consider the following list of preventative measures to help reduce your vulnerability and keep your belongings out of the hands of thieves:

Skis and Snowboards:

Record the brand, size and all visible serial numbers and store them in a separate location. Place an identify marker such as initials somewhere on the skis/board. Crime Stoppers will often have clinics for the engraving of ski equipment. When securing skis/board to car rack ensure that the locks/racks can not be easily removed from vehicle. Often the racks are stolen with the skis and/or board.

Consider separating your skis, placing one on the rack and the other on a different rack. This makes it difficult for thieves who are looking for an “easy target”. Lock it up! Many ski hills and resorts offer areas to lock up your skis/board while you warm up in the chalet.

To obtain further information in regards to securing your property please visit the Barrie Police Service Bell Farm Road office and pick up a “Household Inventory” pamphlet.

Take the precautions so that you will not become a target. Be vigilant, and spread the word to your neighbours. If you see them leaving their property unsecured, urge caution and report any suspicious activity to the police.

No one knows Barrie’s needs better than its own residents. Therefore, as the City continues to grow, planners turn to

community members like you for help with future planning via the new Building Barrie – Framework for the Future initiative.

Building Barrie is the umbrella name for a collection of master planning and implementation projects designed to position the City for future success.

“Building Barrie is not just about bricks and mortar, buildings and roads,” says Growth Management Coordinator, Eric Hodgins. “It’s about building a complete community, with attractive neighbourhoods, great places and green spaces, a vibrant downtown and culture, and a sustainable future.”

“It’s also about building consensus, building partnerships, building opportunities for everyone and involving and inspiring residents to get involved in the conversation about the future of the City.”

Building Barrie kicks off with a public workshop addressing the planning of the 2,293 hectares of

annexed lands lining the south edge of Barrie. The Vision Workshop, scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 8th at the Southshore Community Centre, will not only introduce the project, but also collect initial public input to help create a vision and guiding principles for the lands’ planning and development.

“The City needs to hear from the public about their perspectives, issues and ideas,” says Hodgins who points out that public consultation is an important component of the master planning process.

Although the Vision Workshop will be of high interest to residents and developers who own property within the annexed area, all Barrie residents are welcome to attend.

The event will include various presentations mixed with interactive exercises and workstations that will communicate the study process, collect top public concerns and perspectives, identify residents’ shared and unique priorities, and suggest various design themes in order to generate discussion, collect feedback and address questions.

Residents short on time or not able to attend still have the chance to participate. Quick Preference Terminals will be made available at the workshop and on the project website. These online surveys will provide a quick overview of the study process and collect feedback, tabulating results immediately.

In addition, residents can access the website for on-going

project information and results from workshops and surveys throughout the planning process. A multi-disciplinary team was assembled for the preparation of master land use, servicing plans and related background studies for the annexed lands in November 2010. The studies and plans will address intensification and greenfield opportunities within the boundary of ‘OId Barrie’ as well as the development of the annexed lands. The team will prepare a secondary plan and implementation strategy, plus a financial impact analysis and master plans for water, waste water, storm water and transportation over the next 30 months.

Based on public feedback collected from the Vision Workshop and additional studies, various land use options for the annexed lands will be presented to the public and discussed further this fall at a Land Use Options workshop.

Tax Billing And Installment Due Date Notice

The 2011 interim tax bills have been issued for all property owners who are not on a pre-authorized payment plan and who do not have their financial institution pay their taxes. These bills were mailed between January 20th and January 24th.

IF:• a mortgage company is responsible forpayment of the taxes, and you have received a bill, please forward the bill to your mortgage company for payment;

• a tax arrears notation appears on your tax bill it means that at the time of tax billing there were outstanding taxes and/or penalty owing. Please be advised that any penalties/interest accrued after the billing date, are not included in the amount due for the February installment. Please contact our office for the current balance outstanding if the arrears are being paid in February;

• You signed up for the Pre-Authorized Monthly Payment Plan prior to January 20, 2011 and you have received an interim tax bill, please contact the Tax Department to confirm enrolment in the PAP plan.

Interim installments are due on February 28 and April 26, 2011.

Penalties/interest will commence on the first day of each month for any late payments. Penalty/Interest rates are at the rate of 1.25% per month. Please be advised that all payments received are applied first to all penalties owing, then the remainder to the taxes owing.

Failure to receive a tax bill does not excuse the property owner from responsibility for payment, nor relieve him/her from liability of penalty for late payment.
