ThemissionofGreatHeartsIrving(GHI)istoeducatestudentsforthelifelongpursuitoftruth,goodness,andbeauty.

TheGreatHeartsIrvinggraduatehasafoundationintheliberalartsofgrammarandrhetoric,logicandmathematics,history,naturalscience,andphilosophy.Thegraduatehasalsopracticedthefineartsofmusic,poetry,drawingandpainting,anddrama.Thegraduateisthuspreparedforeverycareer,everycourseofadvancedorspecializedstudy,andeverykindofleisure.Inshort,theGreatHeartsIrvinggraduateisreadyforthelifetimeoflearningthatispossibleforahumanbeing.

GreatHeartsIrvingwillfulfillitsmissionbythefollowingmeans:

• Servicetoarigorous,prescribedliberalartscurriculumthatisthesameforallstudents• Classesof25orlessingrades6-12andof30orlessingradesK-5(withanApprenticeTeacherdedicated,enthusiastic,andintellectually

excellentteacherswhoserveasmodelsoflearningandofcharacter)• Detailedstudentevaluation,withanemphasisuponwritten,narrativeevaluationoflearningratherthanupongradesandpercentages• Regularandmeaningfulhomeworkassignments• Highstandardsofpersonalconductandcomportmentforstudents

Thoughthecurriculumisrigorousandexpectationsofstudentshigh,ourmissionatGreatHeartsIrvingistoprovideanenvironmentthatallowseverystudentwhoiscuriousanddiligenttheopportunitytofulfillhisorherpotential.

ThemissionofthepubliceducationsystemofthisstateistoensurethatallTexaschildrenhaveaccesstoaqualityeducationthatenablesthemtoachievetheirpotentialandfullyparticipatenowandthefutureinthesocial,economic,andeducationopportunitiesofourstateandnation.Thatmissionisgroundedontheconvictionthatageneraldiffusionofknowledgeisessentialforthewelfareofthisstateandforthepreservationofthelibertiesandrightsofcitizens.Itisfurthergroundedontheconvictionthatasuccessfulpubliceducationsystemisdirectlyrelatedtoastrong,dedicated,andsupportivefamily;andthatparentalinvolvementintheschoolisessentialforthemaximumeducationalachievementofachild.

THESTATEOFTEXASPUBLICEDUCATIONGOALS

Goal#1:ThestudentinthepubliceducationsystemwilldemonstrateexemplaryperformanceinthereadingandwritingoftheEnglishlanguage.Goal#2:Thestudentsinthepubliceducationsystemwilldemonstrateexemplaryperformanceintheunderstandingofmathematics.Goal#3:Thestudentsinthepubliceducationsystemwilldemonstrateexemplaryperformanceintheunderstandingofscience.Goal#4:Thestudentsinthepubliceducationsystemwilldemonstrateexemplaryperformanceintheunderstandingofsocialstudies.

Objective#1:Parentswillbefullpartnerswitheducatorsintheeducationoftheirchildren.Objective#2:Studentswillbeencouragedandchallengedtomeettheirfulleducationalpotential.Objective#3:Throughenhanceddropoutpreventionefforts,allstudentswillremaininschooluntiltheyobtainahighschooldiploma.Objective#4:Awell-balancedandappropriatecurriculumwillbeprovidedtoallstudents.Objective#5:Qualifiedandhighlyeffectivepersonnelwillberecruited,developed,andretained.Objective#6:Thestate’sstudentswilldemonstrateexemplaryperformanceinthecomparisontonationalandinternationalstandards.Objective#7:Schoolcampuseswillmaintainasafeanddisciplinedenvironmentconducivetostudentlearning.Objective#8:Educatorswillkeepabreastofthedevelopmentofcreativeandinnovativetechniquesasappropriatetoimprovestudentlearning.Objective#9:Technologywillbeimplementedandusedtoincreasetheeffectivenessofstudentlearning,instructionalmanagement,staff

Eligiblechildrenarethoseingrades3-12identifiedasfailingormostatriskoffailingbaseduponSTAAR,DIBELSandMAPtesting.Thefollowingcategoriesarealsoincluded:

1. GradesK-2thatarerecommendedbasedonteacherinput,parentinterviews,andotherdevelopmentallyappropriatemeasures.2. AnychildwhoparticipatedinHeadStart,EvenStart,EarlyReadingFirst,orTitleIpreschoolservicesatanytimewithinthelasttwo

years.3. Anychildattendingacommunitydaycareprogramorlivinginastateorlocalinstitutionforneglectedordelinquentchildren.4. AnychildservedintheprevioustwoyearsundertheMigrantEducationProgram.5. AnychildwhoishomelessandattendinganyschoolservedbyLEA.

GreatHeartsSummerInstitute:TheGreatHeartsSummerInstituteconsistsofacatalogueofcoursesofferedbyGreatHeartsFacultyandStaffthataredesignedtoprovideourteacherstheopportunitytoengageintopicsandreadingsinawaythattheirnormalteachingschedulemaypreclude.Instructionalandinformational,thesecoursesoftentaketheformofastandardGreatHeartsseminar,whereparticipantsareinvitedtoengageinthoughtfuldialoguearoundthecomplextopicsfoundinsomeofthegreatliteratureoftheWesternTradition.AdFiendum:EverySpring,theGreatHeartsProfessionalDevelopmentTeamputstogetheracatalogueofsomeoftheverybestcourses,seminars,andconferencestheycanfindatschoolsanduniversitiesacrossthecountry.Thatcatalogueisdistributedtoallofourteachersinthehopesthattheymayavailthemselvesofoneortwoduringthesummer.Limitedfundsarealsosetasidetoprovidescholarshipsforteacherstoattendtheseofferings.NewFacultyOrientation:Everysummer,allnewhiresarerequiredtoattendaweek-longconference,conductedbyGreatHearts’Seniorleadership,designedtointroducethesenewmembersofourcommunitytoGreatHearts’philosophicalandpedagogicaldistinctives.TheteacherswillparticipateinatleasttwofullseminarsonimportanteducationaltextsandhearlecturesonourHistory,ourPhilosophy,andourLoves.Summit:EveryFall,beforethebeginningoftheschoolyear,alltheteachersofeachparticularregion(AZandTX)cometogetherinacentralizedlocationforafulldaySummit.DuringthisSummit,facultyandstaffwillhavetheopportunitytolistentoakey-noteaddress,andengageinaseminardiscussionofaparticulartext,astheypreparethemselvesforthestartofthenewschoolyear.FallandSpringPDofferings:Eachcampusisresponsibleforschedulingseveralfaculty-widePDopportunitiesfortheirrespectivefacultyinboththeFallandtheSpring.Theseofferingsrangefromreadingatexttogethertoworking,asawhole,throughlabsthatmightbeofferedinourScienceclasses,toNetwork-widevisitstotheSymphony.Ineachcase,ouradministratorsaretaskedwiththeresponsibilitytoprovideopportunitiesforgrowththroughadiversearrayofvenues.

Key content areas have been identified for the school and teachers to adapt and augment the existing Great Hearts curriculum in order to meet Texas curricular requirements. TEKS are identified, curriculum adapted to meet the TEKS, and then implemented in the classroom. The content areas include English Language Arts & Reading, Social Studies, Mathematics, Science, Health, Fine Arts, Technology Applications, and Health.

ToassisttargetedassistanceschoolsandlocaleducationalagenciestomeettheirresponsibilitytoprovideforalltheirstudentsservedunderthisparttheopportunitytomeettheState’schallengingstudentacademicachievementstandards,eachTitleI,PartATargetedAssistanceprogramincludeseightrequiredcomponentswhichmustbeincludedintheimprovementplansfortargetedassistancecampuses.EachTargetedAssistanceprogramshall—
