hungary’s oldest and most authentic Beatles tribute band is a homecoming guest on the A38 ship. this time they don’t only enchant the audience with sgt. pepper’s costumes and the psychedelic output of the legendary band, but they also deliver a “new” feature in their program: they’re going to perform the duets of paul mcCart-ney and michael Jackson, with a little help from lil C impersonating Jacko.

one of 2015’s most memorable albums was ryley Walker’s primrose green, which, to put it simply, was the continuation of the Van morri-son tradition - a collection of psychedelic, folky, bluesy, experimental songs by an excellent singer-songwriter-guitarist. it might be the last occasion to see him in such an intimate environment as the exhibition space of the A38 ship. interview on page 8.

hailing from one of the coldest swedish towns, luleå, hot jazz-swing / hiphop outfit movits! are returning to the A38 ship. they’ve appeared on the talkshow of the legendary stephen Colbert with huge success, and as a consequence, they’re becoming well-known in America as well. they’re coming with their latest album Dom försökte Begrava oss Dom Visste inte Att Vi Var frön, which can be translated as “they tried to bury us, they didn’t know we were seeds.”

one of the biggest newcomers of the British indie scene in 2007 was the View from Dundee, scotland, who followed in the footsteps of the libertines and the Kooks. incredible as it may sound, they already released their fifth longplayer (titled ropewalk) in september 2015 and they’re ready to present the new songs (and of course some “old” ones too) at their concert in the gozsdu manó Klub, organized by the A38 ship.

in the early 2000s, a sacramento band appeared on the music scene with the weird name !!!, playing dance-punk music. they soon became festival favorites and they also appeared on sziget in 2007. they returned there a few years later, not long after their first ever A38 gig. they’re returning to the ship now as well, presenting their latest album As if. Knowing the stage dynamics of nic offer and co., we can expect yet another memorable concert. interview on page 6.

formerly belonging to the legendary electronic dance music label ninja tune, ema Jolly aka emika is releasing her music now on her own. she’s British, she has Czech ancestors and she’s living in Berlin. Critics often compare her to pJ harvey, the xx and portishead singer Beth gibbons, her songs include elements of early dubstep, electro and classical music. last year she released two albums: piano-driven Klavírni and electronic Drei. on the ship, she’s presenting the latter one, as a breathtaking audio-visual show.

Amazing electronic artists on the A38! last may, Japanese-American shigeto (full name: Zachary shigeto saginaw) already visited the ship, promoting his latest album intermission. on this night, he plays alongside fellow ghostly international artists: Afghani-American lord raja and polish-American heathered pearls.

this concert was supposed to take place in november, but we all know what happened in paris just a few days before the scheduled hungarian gig. After the tragedy, eagles of Death metal cancelled some of their concerts, but they decided to return and continue their tour. led by moustachioed Jesse hughes (who also bears the nicknames Boots electric and the Devil), eoDm are a true rock and roll band, having released four albums, the latest one being last year’s Zipper Down.

one of the most famous and most important underground bands of the russian avantgarde music scene, n.o.m., is returning to the A38 ship after many years. the nearly 30-year-old collective from st. petersburg is presenting their multimedia musical play titled the seven Deadly sins. support comes from the most noted representatives of local jazz-punk: tudósok.

hailing from toronto, Canada, grandtheft is often called the right hand of Diplo - in recent years, he’s become one of the most important north American trap producers and has worked with the likes of Calvin harris, Dillon francis, iggy Azalea or rihanna. the chicago-based instrumental quintet has spent the last twenty-five years making music that defies description. although they have nodded to dub, rock, jazz, electronica and minimalism throughout their revered and influential six-album discography, the resulting sounds have always been distinctly their own. in 2016, after a seven-year-break in terms of albums, they are back with the catastrophist and a tour promoting that – which includes their first ever show in budapest.

the first incarnation of tortoise comprised of multi-instrumentalists Doug mcCombs, John herndon, John mcentire, Bundy K. Brown and Dan Bitney. the Chicago-based band’s self-titled debut already incorporated so many musical styles and influences that they became recognized as the leaders of a new musical movement. the unusual instrumentation (two bass guitars, three percussionists switching between drums, vibraphones and marimbas), the production experiments and their ability to mix different genres quickly made them the most anticipated band city- and worldwide. not to mention that the album has also cemented the musical niche for thrill Jockey records. After a remix album (rhythms, resolutions and Clusters) and a change in the lineup (Bundy K. Brown was replaced by ex-slint member David pajo), the band released its magnum opus, millions now living Will never Die in 1996. Considered as one of the first (and most important) post-rock records, mnlWnD didn’t only extend the bands ideas and sounds, but introduced several new elements to it. the six-track masterstroke boldly melds jazz, dub, rock and every conceivable sub-genre in between, securing tortoise’s status as one of the true trailblazers of experimental music.

two years later, the band turned yet another corner with their third album, tnt. Adding guitarist Jeff parker to cement their musicianship as well as their connections to Chicago’s fertile jazz/avant-garde scene, the band returned with a record of post-modern cool jazz, only slightly informed by the dub, krautrock, and electronics of millions now living Will never Die. pajo left the band after the album’s completion - but that luckily didn’t have an effect on the band’s creativity. A clear sign of that is that Bitney, herndon and parker formed the band isotope 217° with members of the Chicago Underground orchestra. parker also contributed to two records made under the Chicago Undergro-

und moniker, appeared in the film high fidelity and lent his talents to a variety of other records. mcCombs released a full-length album and ep as Brokeback and recorded new albums with eleventh Dream Day and pullman. mcentire completed construction of his soma electronic music studios, composed and recorded music to the John hughes film reach the rock and was still able to record and/or produce stereolab, the high llamas, the for Carnation, smog and the sea & Cake, as well as standards.

in 2001, tortoise released its fourth studio album, standards, their most direct and immediate output to date, that wanders far from their usual, ineffably clean, precise playing. What followed was it’s All Around you, a summarization of what the band has been doing in the last fourteen years: instead of pushing their sound even further, the band took the best elements of their previous records and made ten astonishing songs out of it. it’s All Around you was followed by a collaborative album with Bonnie ‚prince’ Billy: the Brave And the Bold, on which they covered the songs of Bruce springsteen, minutemen, Devo, elton John and others, not to mention the members’ various other projects, including but not limited to exploding star orchestra, Bumps, flashlights, and powerhouse sound.

their sixth full-length album, Beacons of Ancestorship, released seven years ago shows a band that still manages to make the most of its members’ intellectual curiosity, their unmistakable compositional voice and their synthesis of seemingly contradictory sound worlds far from their doorstep. nods to techno, punk, electro, lo-fi noise, cut-up beats, heavily processed synths, and mournful, elegiac dirges – tortoise sounds like only itself and no one else. „the calling card of a tortoise song is the experience of a sound being worked out as a conversation among the individual and interrelated parts—of an ensemble thinking collectively and in group dynamics through the expression of a multi-layered musical thought” - to quote ronen givony.

And on february 17, these pioneers are coming to hungary for the first time with their newest album, released only a few days before the february issue hits the streets. if there is an unmissable show in this month, this is it.

the thematic tendency that principally characterizes szigeti’s past three years of work leads from the emphatically sociocritical approach to the individual interpretation of landscape painting. Whereas earlier (self power exhibition, 2012) the public figure and its presence (that can be illustrated with the possibilities carried in its gestures) stood in the center of the artist’s inte-rest, the later exhibitions (public, 2013; somewhere, 2014) subordinated the human figure to the landscape, the built environment, and they portrayed the characteristics and the message of the figure correlated to the landscape and space.

this tendency is seemingly carried on in the pictures of this present exhibition as well, where the environment appears as a consequence and possibility of human activities.

the 2013 exhibition titled public was opened by györgy Csepeli with the following words: “the pictures we see here prove that remembrance is only possible through the denial of vulgar time and through the evocation of returning. each picture is transfixed by anxiety, which is not simply nurtured by the fear from what has already happened anymore. the pictures affect us, grab us and do not let us go because they confront us with the gruesome threats in us, which do not have to return, because they are here, in us and around us.”

A year later, tibor Kovácsy spoke about the pictures of the exhibition titled somewhere this way: “...resignation and anxious concern is apparent in each picture. resignation is there in the painful collapse of the landscape’s idyll. And concern can be found in the figures bursting the peaceful surface of the landscapes, who and which sometimes appear with a visibly harmful intention, for example in the picture titled smoke, and at other times from unknown considerations, like in industrial landscape, but they’ve just left after decorating the flowery field with neon lamps. they also seem to be up to something suspicious, that is why they were lurking among the trees, where they still woke up the pheasants, carelessly.”

in the pictures of this new exhibition, nature receives a more and more important role, it almost becomes prevalent, dominant. Just like the way the growing greenery covers the remains of a building and makes it bearable. the passing of time, the past, fate and remembrance in all of szigeti’s pictures. the appearing - mostly dead - objects, figures count only as a contrast to the unstoppably realistic flow of nature. on almost every picture, you can smell nature’s grim will to live.

the exhibition is called nature, and it is like a flick - it dislodges us, from a distance it helps us see what we are a part of day after day: people, playground spouts and merry-go-rounds, we are drifting in some kind of incomprehensible flow, going along with life towards passing.

in the newest presented works of imre Bukta, even if the various typical life situations of today’s hungarian countryside people appear, it is not the content that receives primary significance, but the picturesqueness of the simple, unique, rural subject pictures. these paintings also present Bukta’s constantly changing, improving, enriching motive world, which he collects in a really small geographical area, his residence, mezőszemere, on the periphery of heves county.

Bukta’s exhibitions are not only exciting because they usually touch upon new themes, but also because he continually changes his creational method - he develops, experiments and involves new techniques.

the seemingly simple, rural themes, the oftentimes bare landscape (which may be uninteresting to the superficial observer) show themselves as uniquely complicated visual

tissues through Bukta’s pictures - they receive a face, a story. the geometric patterns that have appeared in his paintings since 2005 are becoming more and more organic in time, often the object series fill the print-like patterns that appear in spots. Apart from the figures appearing in the pictures, common speaking objects, details get emphasized.

As well as the wispily elaborated drawings and the human figures that almost levitate from picturesqueness, the most trivial elements of real life also get lifted into the painting. When viewing Bukta’s pictures, the nearly kitsch-like idyll of the city-dweller’s rural romanticism get replaced by another person - the one who lives in the country and knows it to the core. Because here, the bag rocking on the bicycle of the figure appearing under the village christmas tree appears on the painting through the knowledge of place and customs with accepting naturalness, and not through irony.

the pictures of this exhibition consist of smooth paintings on paper or canvas, from visual lyres, the majority of which were made in the past year.

After the highly successful exhibition in the műcsarnok in 2012-13, this is Bukta’s second individual display.

double return! dance-punk revivalist squad !!! (pronounce it as chkchkchk), known for their highly energetic and dancey concerts, released their sixth album, as if last year – and with the tour promoting it, they’re returning to the a38 ship, where they already had a blast a few years ago. we sat down for a chat with vocalist nic Offer.

you’ve already performed in hungary, at the a38 ship and at sziget festival. what kind of memories do you have about those concerts?Well, the festival was big! that always sticks to my mind. But it was fun! And we’ve played one club gig, i think it was on a boat or something, i remember i thought it was one of my favourite shows on that tour. i thought it was a pretty incredible show. so we have fun memories and we are really excited to come back!

you released your sixth studio album, as if last year and you’ve been playing together for eighteen years now. looking back on your nearly two-decade long career, what comes to your mind?you know, something like „wow” - this isn’t what i’ve expected. When we started, we just wanted to travel around America, playing at our friends’ basement and that kind of stuff. the idea of for example doing a phoner interview with someone in hungary, that wasn’t a reality when we started the band in 1996. that idea was insane, that wasn’t what we expected. i feel lucky that we’re still making new music and travelling the world and people still give a shit! i feel very lucky.

Most of the inspiration for the songs of as if came from dance world allstars like nina kraviz or levon Vincent. one of the things that attracted us is to make that kind of dance music. We liked things weird. When we started the band, we were very much into things like James Brown or Chic, but we always wanted it to be mi-xed it with something weird and back then we were mixing Can or public image ltd. And i just feel like that now what’s weird is something much fresher and newer. We have never really been a band concerned with retro or bringing something back, that wasn’t the idea for us. the idea was to look forward. And i just think that nina Kraviz or levon Vincent are people that represent the kind of music that looks forward today.

in an interview, you said that dance and electronic music is always looking forward, and there is always something new and fascinating about it, so unlike rock ‚n’ roll, it’s easy for you to keep interested in it. why would you say electronic music is more forward-thinking that rock ‚n’ roll?now we are reaching the point in the interview where i wish that i’ve had my coffee and i could answer this question in a more philosophical way. maybe it’s the limitations of the guitars and drums, but it seems like that at some point in the previous era, the guitar and drum people kind of settled into an idea that rock ‚n’ roll is a return to something. that it’s basically about looking back. even though rock is very good today, it’s always sort of looking back. to me, the last truly forward-looking rock

band was probably sonic youth. that was like the last time that guitars and sound structures were pushed to their limits. maybe it’s about drums and guitars are much older instruments and computers and synthesizers are much newer. the latter are 20th century inventions. maybe it’s just to do with that. But whatever the case is, it seems that people who align themselves with moving forward seem to – especially at this point – embrace computers. But i don’t think that it has to be forever. i still like rock music and think that there are things that can only achieved with drums and guitars, not with computers. As an end, i also think that rock is so dead that anyone can show up and save it; when the music is the most dead is the same time it gets rediscovered. our saviour can already be amongst us!

you chose the tracks that made it to as if, based on your family’s and friend’s reactions to the demos you sent them.i think the idea came from Bon Jovi, actually! Bon Jovi or Def leppard, maybe both of them did it – they had the album’s songs chosen by teenagers. teenagers got all the tracks and they chose those that made it to Bon Jovi’s slippery When Wet. But i think that’s a smart idea. i mean, when we create something, we create it for ourselves, but when we put it out, we are putting it out for other people to enjoy. i think as an artist, in the past i got too precious about the statement that i wanted to make, you know, i wanted to make an intensely personal statement and i ended up with a track on the record that nobody seemed to care about and no one discussed. so it seemed like „wow, i’ll make my own statement but i’d rather have the statements that resonates with people we’ve chosen, who we personally resonate with”. it’s very liberating actually, to let other people choose it and we are definitely surprised by the results.

lyrically, one of the main topics is to trust your guts, your inner voice even when society would tell you to do the complete opposite of what it tells you – is it hard for you to keep doing what you’re doing, even when you question yourself?Certainly. in many ways, those songs are the songs that we have written for ourselves. When you’ve written those words, you have to live them. so there are times when i want to give up, but there is a voice in my head that says that i can’t give it up and there are these lyrics that say that it would be okay – so it’s like a promise to yourself.

the album title grew out of your desire to imagine yourself in a number of different musical roles.i felt like that, especially with the genres we are linked to – we’ve reached the moment, where we’ve definitely needed to push forward in our sound, so it was always an exciting challenge for us, to achieve something we haven’t achieved yet. it’s like a fun game we are playing, to creatively challenge ourselves. it basically comes from our love for all the different kinds of music. We just try to achieve all those things. our favourite bands were always those, that could push forward and reinvent themselves.

Monthly offer for the month of february, we are preparing a special monthly offer, which can be ordered alongside the dishes in our regular menu. We were aiming to reinvent the local hungarian flavors and to the meals from our childhood into a modern context.

And what would it look like? here’s a little taster:for first course, we offer the tartlet a la Hortobágyi, which is the traditional hortobágyi pancake, reinvented.on cold winter evenings, it’s worth trying our pumpkin cream soup, to which we recommend almond chips.

our main meals are made in the same spirit. here are two examples:Sous vide chicken breast steak with “vadas” stew gravy and bun talers.Chicken leg fillet with paprikash gravy and noodles with scrambled eggs.

We also thought of those who like pasta, thus we are preparing mascarpone tagliatelle which we serve with salmon cubes.for dessert, we recommend the oreo cake.

renewed lamp park in the concert hallfor years, the A38 ship has been named among the country’s best concert venues in almost every poll. so far, this has mostly been due to the acoustics and the sound system (and of course the technical personnel!). now the lighting system has caught up as well: after a nearly 20 million forint investment in January, the lamp park of the concert hall has been completely renewed.

the old galileos have been joined by a dozen of intelligent robot lamps and reflector stripes (special “honeycomb” lamps). the audience and the artists will be able to enjoy the lamps (installed during the maintenance in January) from the middle of the month. What’s more, the concerts haven’t only become more spectacular - they’re also a lot more environment friendly, as the consumption of the new lamps is nowhere near the old ones’.

liveurope continuesthe program series titled liveurope has been going on for a year now, and its purpose is to help young artists at the beginning of their career with their international emergence. As well as the A38 ship, further members of this grandiose cooperation include melkweg in Amsterdam, Ancienne Belgique in Brussels, Village Underground in london, and other noted clubs as well.

in 2015, the A38 organized over fifty similar events, and this year will be no different. liveurope presents programs already in three venues (in the gozsdu manó Klub and Dürer Kert, as well as the ship). thanks to this, we can welcome therapy’s support band flesh roxon from finland, hexvessel also from finland, tricot’s support act fresh out of the Bus from slovakia, perturbator from france, say yes Dog from lu-xembourg/germany, and several other bands.

changes in trafficin the middle of January, the interlocking tram system in Buda was introduced to the general public. from now on, approaching the A38 ship or the closest traffic junction, szent gellért tér from north Buda is no longer possible by bus, only by tram.

Bus 86 has been cancelled. instead, you can take tram 19 to szent gellért tér, where the ship is a ten-minute walk from. Another possibility is tram 17, which goes through széll Kálmán tér and Villányi út towards móricz Zsigmond tér. the A38 ship can still be approached easiest by tram 4 and tram 6, and the scheduled ship service also docks at the A38.

berlin-based techno mistress emika returned with her third al-bum, drei, last year. Glassy melodies meet deep, dark, and almost dubstep-styled bass on it, while solitude and self-reflection drive the fragile lyrics. and now, emika is back to the a38 ship with a special audiovisual show. what does that mean? find out below.

you’ve already performed at the a38 ship, four years ago. what kind of memories do you have about that concert?i remember it was pretty wild! my fans in Budapest are super dope with a good energy. they had to make the stage smaller to fit in all the people and i have people all around the stage which was cool. i love being close to the audience when i perform.

this time, you’ll present a full audio-visual show, centered around your latest album, drei. what can we expect on this special night?this is a new show which has a special sound, it features unreleased music, raw beats and deep bass lines, and lots of my new classical elements from my piano album Klavirni and my upcoming symphony. it’s a live improvised set with all different sides of my work. the visuals and lights create a world around the stories in the songs from Drei and transport the audience into sort of a club cinema setting. i hope it’s going to be a deep and inspiring night for everyone.

for you, what’s the biggest difference between performing live and dJing? which one do you prefer?When i perform live it is all my own music and has my signature sound, playing instruments, singing. When i DJ, it’s more like a massive showcase of all my inspirations, friends’ music, and favorite records mi-xed in a way which is eclectic.

drei and klavírni were both released through your own label, emika records. what made you decide to split with ninja tune and start it?

what are your future plans with it?my focus is not on labels. i think labels should function in the background and not be so important anymore. great music, creativity, and artistic vision deserve to be at the front now. We’ve had decades of labels teaching us what is cool, and now it’s time for the artists to rise up higher.

ryley walker is the reincarnation of true american guitar players like John fahey or bert Jansch, with a hint of vintage folk and jazz added. think of Van Morrison jamming with Miles davis and you’ve got it. last year, he released his most mature and outstanding album to date, and now, he is coming to the a38 ship to perform it to his hungarian fans – but before it, he sat down for a chat with us. you’ve played all sorts of styles from punk and noise rock to your current folk-ish sound. could you take us through your musical development?Just getting older and having developing tastes in art and music. mee-ting lots of friends with cool record collections.

i’ve also read that you had a bike accident, that resulted in the fact that you are deaf on your left ear. did it change your relation to music in any way?it’s definitely a lot harder to hear overtones and small details in sound, but overall i’m happy as can be.

did your songwriting method change during the years?no, always been just toying around with riffs and cutting loose.

your current album sounds like it was made in the 60s or 70s, but you don’t want people to get nostalgic about it. what draws you toward that era, if not nostalgia?lots of solid progressive movements in sound and space. An innovative time!

you’ve said in an interview that ten years ago, everyone sounded like animal collective or Panda bear, but now, people are playing guitars again, getting back to the basics. why do you think it happened so?Well, guitars are great i suppose!

you have acrylic nails because of your guitar playing. could you tell us a bit more about that? who were your heroes in terms of guitar playing?it’s just a personal approach to performing. sounds best to me. my heroes are sonny sharrock and John Abercrombie at the moment.

compared to all kinds Of you, Primrose Green is more jazz-influenced, more dense. does it have anything to do with your bandmates being jazz musicians? do you also have your musical roots in jazz?yes, i suppose them having deep backgrounds into jazz influenced those songs a whole lot. i have no formal training to speak of.

you also said in an interview that it’s „a total chicago record”. what did you mean by that?made in Chicago with a great group of collaborators and risk takers. And we did it on no money while drunk, so there.

Primrose Green was titled after a cocktail you and your friends invented. could you open up a bit more about it?it’s kind of like lsD. Don’t try it.

your lyrics are mostly about nature and echo the influence of classic poets like yeats. would you agree with that?i think i like anecdotes and nice imagery, i relate to yeats in that sense.

when you play live, are you trying to recreate what you’ve done in the studio, or are you just jamming?oh, we are JAmming.

what were your favourite releases from this year?natural information society & Bitchin Bajas’ Automaginary, Circuit Des yeux – in plain speech.

A38 is the reincarnation of ‘tripolie’, a Ukrainian stone-carrier ship, built in 1968. the name comes from Artemovsk, which is the ship prototype, and this one was the 38th unit of the ‘Artemovsk’ class. the re-building project lasted for one and a half years. Architects, ship engineers, acoustic designers, electricians, musi-cians and promoters contributed their skills and experience to make it a both artist and audience friendly place.

After years of constant development, A38 has become a cultural entertainment centre with international programme, a restaurant, five bars, one main concert hall, open-air terraces and lounges - all in one aboard as one of the most fascinating venues in Budapest. since its opening it became the flagship of Budapest nightlife, a must-see spectacle on the Danube with scenic view and one of europe’s coolest clubs, which has been voted ‘the World’s greatest Bar’ – according to the poll of lonely planet in 2012.

A38 ship is located in Budapest, at the Buda side of petőfi bridge, easily accessible by a few minutes walk from tram 4 and 6 “petőfi híd budai hídfő” stop or by BKV public transport ships.

the concert hall is a place for live shows and parties, and several bars ship-wide are open for the audience to chat and have a drink.the restaurant offers a daily menu every weekday from 12h to 15h for 1150 hUf.

our roof terrace is closed in the au-tumn/winter season and reopens in April 2016.for our smoking visitors, we have a heated smoking terrace area with its own bar.
