HIGHLIGHTS2

French electronic music has been special and unique for quite some time now, and what’s as well important is that it’s a pioneering brand in contemporary pop music. Perturbator, who, similarly to his fellow countrymen Kavinsky, recites the 80’s with dark sounds, heavy bass, DIY electronics, sci-fi romance and melancholy. Local support comes from similar retro new wave outfit Lazerpunk.

Five noted DJs/producers of the local contemporary electronic dance music scene play maddening tracks to the dance-hungry audience of the A38. Palotai, the father figure of the Hungarian party culture, Gáspár Horváth aka Jumodaddy from Irie Maffia and Wondawulf who defines his own world as “future music” - they offer booty-shaking trap until the break of dawn.

It is totally safe to say that you will be able to witness a real supergroup on the stage of the A38 on this night. One of the most emblematic figures of the electronic dance music scene of the past 25 years, Adam Freeland, engineer-mathematician-turntable wizard Steve Nalepa and Australian singer-songwriter Ry Cuming aka Ry X formed a band in 2013 to prove that there are no musical boundaries. By 2014, they already had an album out titled Liminal which resembles the electronic experiments of Thom Yorke.

Local electro/breakbeat DJ Ludmilla is one of the most successful participants of the Hungarian electronic dance music scene and she has done well on the genre’s very important platform, Beatport. She has won several awards and she has performed on the same stage as Skrillex, Adam Freeland (who plays one day before her on the Ship with his project The Acid) or Pendulum. Without a doubt, she will deliver a memorable set yet again alongside Dublic.

In certain parts of the world they received criticism because of their controversial name, but we want to give a warm welcome to Calgary band Viet Cong. They delivered one of the best albums of 2015, and they are about to deliver one of the best concerts of 2015 on the A38, as they are well known for their amazing gigs. Once upon a time (to be precise, in the late 2000s) there was a band in the colder regions of Canada, with the name Women, and just like in the case of Girls, its members consisted only of men. They built a cult following and released two albums, until things came to an end when the two brothers in the group, Matt and Pat Flegel came to blows on stage. Women went on a hiatus and the band officially disbanded in 2012 when 26-year-old frontman Christopher Reimer died in his sleep due to heart failure. This tragic event acted as a wake-up call for Matt Flegel, who decided to form another band.

When the two brothers in Women beat each other up during that memorable gig, drummer Mike Wallace left the stage announcing that this was the end of his music career. Fortunately, he was wrong – Matt Flegel asked him to join his new outfit, which already included former Lab Coast guitarist Scott „Monty” Munro (Flegel had played with him in singer-songwriter Chad VanGaalen’s live act). The line-up became complete with the arrival of Daniel Christiansen on guitar, who was in the Black Sabbath tribute band Sweet Reef with Flegel. All they need-ed then was a name: they chose Viet Cong because Wallace once de-scribed Flegel’s bass playing on stage in a rather strange way. He said: „You play your bass like shooting a gun. All you need is a rice paddy hat and it would be so Viet Cong.” The name stuck, and even though the members deny any political connotation, they still get hate mail from people to this day, they hardly received the American visa and they were infamously banned from performing in Oberlin, Ohio. Flegel has contemplated finding a new name, but he says it’s too late now because of their constantly growing popularity.

Even though the musicians had been famous to a certain extent, starting Viet Cong proved to be very difficult. As a support act, they toured the cold regions of Canada in a compact car, they weren’t paid, nobody wanted to see them and the headlining acts got all the beer. They didn’t give up and started to write songs on the road. By 2013 they had a bunch of tracks and they self-released them under the title Cassette. The following year they were signed to the record label Flemish Eye in Canada and to Mexican Summer (later to promi-nent indie label Jagjaguwar) in the USA. Cassette was rereleased in an expanded version and people started to take notice. Soon an al-bum was recorded with the help of Holy Fuck’s Graham Walsh in a studio-turned-barn in rural Ontario. They wanted to release it on No-vember 11 of the previous year, but they realized that it’s not a good idea to have an album out titled Viet Cong on Veterans’ Day. They postponed the release date to January 2015, by which time they’d created quite a buzz in the music scene. Needless to say, the record received rave reviews.

The songs obviously reveal Viet Cong’s influences. There’s a certain amount of post-punk in the album’s seven tracks, and there are hints of the inspiration that Flegel gets from his favorite band, Sonic Youth. His other faves include Echo & The Bunnymen, New Order, Television and early Pink Floyd, and he also loves a lot of krautrock acts: Can, Neu!, Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream and Faust. Their effect is best heard in the epic 11-minute album closer Death, but these guys show huge affinity for pop hooks as well – shorter songs such as Continental Shelf and March Of Progress clearly prove that they’re not the archetypal miser-able suicide squad. They’re getting more and more popular, they’re set to appear high on end-of-year charts and they no longer need daytime jobs (before finally breaking through, Flegel did flooring and Munro delivered cupcakes). The best news for us is that we can welcome them aboard the A38 Ship for a memorable concert. Viet Cong are our new favorite Canadian band.

Two up-and-coming bands are performing on the Ship on this night. Six-piece Sonar Bistro, formed in 2012, play alternative trip-pop (according to themselves), which in fact is soft, intelligent pop music with a touch of soul and Latin influences. Listening to them feels like sitting on the waterside watching the sun set. Half Note City, consisting of four members, is a classic pop-rock band, who put blues rock and funk into a modern context.

Two experienced veterans of the local music scene, Jorgosz Tzortzoglou and Gábor Lepés are in charge of this band, formed in 2002. Their style includes Carpathian and Balkan folk, electronic dance music, hip hop and pop-rock. Currently they’re playing as a six-piece, and they released their latest album this year. On this record, they returned to the Hungarian folk songs, which they stirred with reggae and ska.

If there’s a new, fresh and exciting band in the Hungarian pop scene, then it is Passed, who first came to prominence with their hit Mesmerized, before appearing in a talent show on a national television channel. Their first EP titled 1919 was released a short time ago, and their slightly electronic songs include a harp as well. They receive support from Kaktus who play electronic / psychedelic / experimental music.

A highly talented composer/performer in the local jazz scene, Lőrinc Barabás doesn’t believe in boundaries: he bravely moves about between improvisational music, experimental electronica, funk, soul, and at the same time, he speaks his own musical language. On this night, he plays with his own well-known band.

Maybe it’s no longer valid to talk about Middlemist Red as an up-and-coming band, as they’ve already reached a lot in the Hungarian scene. They’re one of the most exciting local young bands, who put the psychedelic beat-rock heritage into a modern context. They have grandiose plans and they have more and more gigs abroad - they’ve performed at the highly prestigious Exit Festival in Serbia as well.

Everything is set for a zany summer night parade on the A38: Wombo Orchestra, whose music incorporates every kind of wind instruments, alloy amazingly uplifting musical worlds - the delicacy of French chansons, the dynamics of the marching bands and hip hop, and, of course, the joy of Mediterranean fiestas. Simply irresistible!

INTERVIEW 5

Borrowing their name from characters in William Gibson’s cyper-punk masterpiece, Pattern Recognition, Volkova Sisters were born from the three members’ love for dark and melancholic 80’s new-wave music and industrial pop. They’ve released their newest EP, Holiday in July and they’ll surely play songs from it at their concert at the A38 Ship on August 8.

You – literally – live on the optical wire between London and Buda-pest. What are the pros and cons of this schizophrenic state? Is it different to play here than in London? I don’t really think that there are pros or cons, or at least I haven’t put a list together yet. There is only one thing I have recognized recently that I notice cultural differences more since I have to adapt to two differ-ent countries. Every crowd is different, every city has a different code what I quite enjoy to watch. When Volkova Sisters moved to London, what were your main goals and which ones would you say you reached? The main goals were quite personal and they were more about how we want to live and what we want to change in our private life. And we are still working on those. In a lot of interviews you’ve said that the new Volkova Sisters album is scheduled for autumn. What’s up with that? We’re trying to keep to plans on releasing the LP but it’s a very long and difficult process and honestly, most of it is not up to us. I hope it’s gonna happen this year.

Your newest EP is louder, poppier and even more dynamic than your previous releases. What were your main inspirations when you were working on it? There was no main concept about this EP, we just picked 4 songs from what we have been working this year. It’s a more like a report from where we are now. Also these tracks may not become part of the upcoming LP, we still haven’t decided. So we thought it was time to let them go instead. How would you describe the main theme of the EP? There is no main theme this time, I think. It’s four tracks which were written in the same period but they don’t have a concept. We have listened to these four together and they seemed quite compact. Dávid Schram, one of the best known Hungarian producers/engi-neers helped in the mastering of the EP. This was the first time that an „outsider” helped with it. What were your experiences? It’s always interesting to work with somebody else sound wise because everybody has a different taste and style. We were thinking of him be-cause he’d done some awesome pop tracks before and we wanted to try what would happen if we gave a more poppy vibe to tracks which are not quite ear friendly sometimes. If you could collaborate with three musicians, who would they be? Quite hard question. Because I’ve already worked with amazing peo-ple, and to be honest, I have no clue who I should say. Maybe because I’m quite content and not really looking for that.

NEWS

For years, the A38 Stage has been the big-gest indoors concert venue of Sziget Festival, where, because it is indoors and sound-proof, there are concerts in the nighttime as well, and well-known bands perform even after midnight. Therefore, the curfew comes later, and the headliners of this stage start playing at around 11 p.m., when the programs end on the Main Stage. In the ten-thousand-capacity tent, there will be current stars, who have broken through recently, including the darlings of the journalists and the audience, Future Islands, or, Tyler The Creator. You will be able to witness acts that have played club concerts on the A38 Ship, such as Selah Sue, Mø, Enter Shikari, Jamie Woon, Knife Party, The Subways or José González (to be precise, the latter performed on the Ship with his band Junip). There will be classic acts such as Paloma Faith, Interpol, SBTRKT and Dropkick Murphys. Eventually, there will be bands that are going to return to the A38 in the fall - fresh Belgian stars Balthazar, or Dutch band Kensington, who fill arenas in their home country.

Songwriters on the A38 Ship - new program on Petőfi TV and Radio

Akadémia38: concert sound and light technician training to start in August

The A38 Ship has been making concert films and documentaries about the musicians who perform here. Now there is a new series on Petőfi TV. Every Friday, at around 10:30 p.m., there’s a program on the channel called Song-writers on the A38 Ship. The 26-minute features are concert movies and reports, resembling the other programs of the A38, but they are a bit different now. The series, built in a unified struc-ture, attempts to present the great personalities, the well-known veterans and the young up-and-coming performers, mainly through their songs. The weekly series is an experiment: an attempt of the A38 and Petőfi TV/Radio to introduce songwriters through more channels. The con-certs are played every Monday, and Petőfi TV, broadcasting live from the Ship, gets involved in the show. The sound recording is played by Petőfi Rádió in an edited form as a one-hour program. A few weeks after the performances, there is a 26-minute long version shown on Petőfi TV. We are planning to broadcast the concerts live online, in a separate broadcast.

The good expert is a bit crazy, also very dedi-cated and knows their way about any compli-cated situation. The aim of Akadémia38, the concert technology school of the A38 Ship is to train such specialists. If you complete the course, you will be a concert or light technician with a certificate. The high level theoretical ed-ucation will be delivered by noted tutors, the intensive practical training will take place in the unique Concert Hall of the A38 in small groups - this is Akadémia38. In the first year, thirteen students completed the course; some of them have already tried their hand at real concerts. The new courses will start in September. The application dead-line for the fall concert sound technician and for the new concert light and multimedia course is August 23. More info on the akademia.a38.hu webpage.

Coming from the past, looking at the future, loud drums, screaming synths and shouting robots. This is the essence of Lazerpunk’s music, who will perform before his musical icon, Perturbator on August 7. Members? An ex photographer who became a gunsmith, and put down the camera just to pick up the synthesizer. I also sold my soul to the devil in exchange for bigger speakers and a faster bike.

Style? The typical VHS action movies of the 80’s. Retro video games. Coming from the past, looking at the future, loud drums, screaming synths and shouting robots. When and where?Sometime around 2013 I decided that if I listen to retrowave day and night, I should try to produce it too. Before that I made songs in other genres like chiptune, electro-industrial, ebm, experimental, synthpop, etc.. But most of those songs never got released. When I started Lazerpunk!, it was a just-for-fun project. I didn’t want to stress much on the songs I cre-ated under the name Lazerpunk! If I felt that a song is okay, I just released it. But of course as Lazerpunk! gGot more and more popular, I started to take this thing more seriously. But not too seriously. I mean, I still love and enjoy this project and it is rather a fun pastime activity for me than something I’m really stressed about. Influences?I have lots and lots of influences, and not only music, but movies, video games, and all forms of art. But one of my main influences, or I could say role models is Perturbator. He was amongst the first synthwave produc-ers I started listening to. Doing a show with him was on my “things-to-do-before-die” list.

Who’d you like to play with at A38?Wherever I go, I go with my motorbike, so I rarely drink. But once I got really drunk and made a bet with a friend of mine, that if I’m not going to be Combichrist’s support in their next concert at A38, I’ll have to do something really bad. If I remember right I said that if I fail, I’ll chew on a razorblade. Now that I thought about it, I really, really don’t want to do this. So I’ll have to perform with Combichrist, or else I’ll have some really bad time. Future plans, dreams, nightmares?I’d like to direct my own music videos, play shows in different cities or even countries, go on a tour, release a new album and of course my dream is to make a living writing and performing music. This way I wouldn’t have to work something entirely different and I could focus all my time and energy on making music.

Nightmares? I had one just yesterday. I was in a swimming pool that was filled with giant snakes and crocodiles. It was pretty bad. So bad that I decided to wake up instead. But seriously, when it comes to music I don’t really have any nightmares. I’m pretty positive about the future of Lazerpunk! I mean it depends on me and my friends and the people who support me (I don’t like to call them fans). I get lots of love and help from these people and I’m pretty sure that if I try to give them the best they will continue to help and support me in the future.

HISTORY

8

A38 is the reincarnation of ‘Tripolie’, a Ukrainian stone-carrier ship, built in 1968. The name comes from Artemovsk, which is the ship prototype, and this one was the 38th unit of the ‘Artemovsk’ class. The re-building project lasted for one and a half years. Architects, ship engineers, acoustic designers, electricians, musi-cians and promoters contributed their skills and experience to make it a both artist and audience friendly place.

After years of constant development, A38 has become a cultural entertainment centre with international programme, a restaurant, five bars, one main concert hall, open-air terraces and lounges - all in one aboard as one of the most fascinating venues in Budapest. Since its opening it became the flagship of Budapest nightlife, a must-see spectacle on the Danube with scenic view and one of Europe’s coolest clubs, which has been voted ‘The World’s Greatest Bar’ – according to the poll of Lonely Planet in 2012.

A38 Ship is located in Budapest, at the Buda side of Petőfi bridge, easily accessible by a few minutes walk from tram 4 and 6 “Petőfi híd budai hídfő” stop or by BKV public transport ships.

The concert hall is a place for live shows and parties, and several bars ship-wide are open for the audience to chat and have a drink. The restaurant offers a daily menu every weekday from 12h to 15h for 1150 HUF.

Our roof terrace is closed in the autumn/winter season and reopens in April 2013.For our smoking visitors, we have a heated smoking terrace area with its own bar.
